We’re watching you If you’re having a clear-out this spring, make sure you don’t get caught out by using an illegal company or person to remove your unwanted items. Always use registered waste carriers as cold callers and illegal waste carriers will often dump your waste rather than pay legitimate fees to dispose of it. Never use anybody who isn’t a legitimate waste carrier with an Environment Agency licence number which should be validated against the Environment Agency’s live database. This includes gardeners, plumbers and builders and others. If you have doubts about someone and you can’t verify their authenticity, don’t use them. A legitimate waste carrier should also be able to give you a waste transfer note as proof. Find and check registered waste carriers at www.bromley.gov.uk/wastecarriers or call the Environment Agency hotline 03708 506 506. Everyone has a duty of care and is responsible for what happens to their unwanted goods and other waste. This means you could be liable for a substantial fine if fly-tipped waste is traced back to you, the owner. So don’t give others the opportunity to dump your waste - even if you think by paying more they’ll be legitimate, or you’re offered a cheap, easy option to get rid of it. It’s not worth the risk. You can of course, dispose of your own bulky waste yourself although many organisations will accept donations and will collect the waste from you. Bromley residents can also take bulky waste to one of the Reuse and Recycling Centres at Waldo Road, Bromley or Churchfields Road, Beckenham for disposal - free of charge. If you are unable to transport your waste to one of these sites, Bromley Council will collect and dispose of large items for you for a fee. Search their website www.bromley.gov/wastenews for details. Although there’s no one solution to the problem of fly-tipping or dumped rubbish, Bromley Council is tackling the issue in various ways. Naturally, they prosecute offenders but they also use other tools as and when appropriate. For example, they’ll issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs), CCTV surveillance, vehicle ‘stop and search’ operations, road closures, as well as seizing vehicles involved in fly-tipping offences or from those unable to prove they are legitimate waste carriers. Bromley Council’s campaign ‘Fly-tippers - we’re watching you’ aims to tackle all forms of fly-tipping – from a small bag of rubbish left on the street to a lorry load of construction waste dumped in a green space. We’d like you to be our eyes and ears and if you see or hear anything suspicious, or if you witness an envirocrime like fly-tipping taking place - however big or small - call the police straightaway and report the details in confidence to Bromley Council at www.bromley.gov.uk/envirocrime We need useful information such as a description of the offender, a vehicle registration or photo if you have one and you could receive up to £500

They’re also great for using up any leftover veg or meats from a Sunday roast that you might have. Heat the oven to 180 degrees (gas mark 5) 2. Using a large round cutter, press circles out of each slice of bread (keep the crusts to use in bread pudding or for bread crumbs!) 3. Take a rolling pin and roll out/flatten each circle 4. Brush 4 rounds of a muffin tin tray with a little olive oil 5. Press the bread in to the muffin holes 6. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs then snip in your spring onions with scissors, and tear the ham in to small pieces. Add in a handful of frozen sweet corn, season with the black pepper and give a final mix 7. Pour the mixture evenly in to the 4 bread cups then pop in the oven (adults do this bit!) for 20 minutes or until the egg mix has completely set. 8. Once cooked, remove from the oven (adults do this bit!) then leave to rest for ten minutes before removing the cups and eating them (ensure they’re not too hot for little mouths first!
