Here are some great ideas for handmade decorations, presents and activities for all the family

Feeding Winter Birds You will need:

Lard or other hard fat.

A selection of wild bird food, seeds, peanuts, bread & cake crumbs, chopped bacon rind.

Halves of empty orange skins, fir cones etc.

Instructions:

1. Soften the lard or fat in a warm place, place in a bowl and mix in the seeds, nuts, crumbs etc.

2. Puncture holes on opposite sides of the orange skins and thread a length of string through each hole, knotted on the inside and tied at the top for hanging or tie string around the fir cones 3. Press the mixture into the fir cones or fill the orange skins and place in the fridge until set.

Christmas Star Decorations You will need:

Thick card (or buy wooden stars online), pencil, scissors, PVA glue, sweet wrappers/coloured tissue paper, stars/decorations (we used table confetti), hole punch and cord or ribbon.

Instructions:

1. Draw or trace a star shape on to the card and cut it out.

2. Cut the sweet wrapper or tissue paper into random pieces and stick them all over the stars until one side is covered, fold over, or cut, the edges. Leave to dry then repeat on the second side and stick on the little stars/decorations. Dry. 3. Punch a hole in one of the points of the star and thread the cord or ribbon through, tie to form a hanging loop.

Homemade Wrapping Paper You will need:

Brown paper, felt tip pens, paints & brushes, potato

Ideas:

Draw round your family’s hands with felt tip pens or cut shapes into potatoes and brush paint on to the shape to print patterns on the paper. Leave to dry. Great for those special presents!

Melting Snowman Biscuits

Assemble these characterful festive biscuits ~ sticky fun for you and your little ones!

INGREDIENTS: Makes 6      

200g fondant icing sugar 6 white marshmallows 6 large cookies 24 mini chocolate beans 6 pretzel sticks Tube black writing icing

METHOD

1.

Put the icing sugar into a bowl and add cold water a teaspoon at a time until the mixture is runny but thick enough to coat a spoon.

2.

Snip the marshmallows in half using wetted scissors.

Spoon a little icing on to each cookie and attach half a marshmallow. Using a little icing, stick the other half on top at an angle. Drizzle a little more icing onto the cookie to make melting snow.

4.

Break the pretzel sticks in half and place into the icing for arms.

Stick orange chocolate beans on for the noses. Place three chocolate beans on the icing on each cookie to represent buttons. Leave to set

5.

Using the writing icing, pipe small blobs for the eyes and mouth on the marshmallow. Leave to set again. bbcgoodfood.com, December 2013

Taster Sessions Available Rehearsals start January 2020 New Youth Theatre is extremely excited to announce that their next Junior production will be “Seussical The Musical Jr”. Rehearsals will begin in January 2020 and the show will be staged at the Bonington Theatre on the 21st -28th March 2020.

“Seussical The Musical” is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! It brings to life all of our favourite Dr Seuss Characters, including Horton The Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colourful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks”. Horton faces a double challenge – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

The New Youth Theatre concept is simple. Children between the ages of 3-12 years are taught how to develop and improve their performing arts skills whilst rehearsing for a fully staged musical each term. Taster Sessions are available. To join the energetic cast in this and future productions call:

Perform, the popular children’s drama school for 4-12s, is delighted to be expanding into Nottinghamshire in January 2020, with two new schools opening in West Bridgford and Wollaton. A unique children’s drama school with a special emphasis on child development, Perform uses a mix of drama, dance and singing to bring out every child’s full potential. Run by highly experienced actor-teachers in small groups, classes focus on developing the 4 Cs: confidence, communication, coordination, and concentration.

The curriculum ensures plenty of fun, using a mix of energetic games, catchy songs and funky dances. All class materials are written by Perform, with apps, music downloads and videos for the children to play at home, keeping the magic of the classes alive.
