Short Breaks & Aiming High Recent changes to these services have prompted a steady stream of queries to RSFV: What is the eligibility criteria? What is a short break and who is it for? The last of the meetings to meet the managers and discuss any queries is: Wed 17th June: 12.30pm-2pm Windham Croft, Windham Road, Richmond Alternatively, Caroline Baxter also offers parent’s drop in sessions where you can just literally drop in and speak with Caroline about anything relating to the Integrated Services for Disabled Children: Windham Croft: Windham Road, Richmond, TW9 2HP 24th June 1.00-2.30 16th July 12.00 - 1.30 Moor Lane Centre Moor Lane, Chessington, Surrey, KT9 2AA: 25th June 10.00 - 11.30 20th July 1.00 - 2.30 This summer holidays, Caroline is delighted to be holding similar drop-ins for young people. There will be support for any young person who would like help with communications or similar. Dates and details for these are to follow.
Who does what? – part 1 Very recently, the Information Services and the Independent Advice & Support Services (IASS) – previously known as Parent Partnership - moved to another provider. Many of the staff remain the same, and they now provide these same services across both Kingston & Richmond. This provider is KIDS, see the link here: http://www.kids.org.uk/ The information service run by Lena Vantol (at Richmond Aid) – is still to be run by Lena, but from KIDS. We can forward a letter from the Regional Director of KIDS which introduces their organisation together with details of the way they handle personal and confidential information. Who does what? – part 2 RUILS now run a Parents Self- Advocacy Group. This group is for parents to meet and share similar life experiences. They meet monthly in The Eel Pie, Twickenham, TW1 3NJ at 12noon. Future meetings are: Friday 19th June Friday 24th July Friday 21st August Friday 25th September Friday 23rd October We can also forward a flyer on some of the other services offered by RUILS. MeToo&Co are hosting a meeting this Friday where families can find out more. Details follow: Friday 19th June – 10 am to 11.30 am The Crossways, St.Stephen’s Church, Twickenham “RUILS is a local user-led charity which supports adults and children with disabilities and additional needs. The three speakers who will be coming from RUILS to tell us about the services they offer are: Independent Support – Alex Hardy Free and impartial advice on all aspects of the new Education Health and Care Plans; whether you are new to the system or transferring from a statement. Sitting & Befriending Service – Sue Robson We can help find a sitter/befriender to support your family, give you a break from caring, or be a companion to your child/young person helping them to access social and leisure activities. Family Matters – Jackie Wade A new service to help support and guide you to find practical solutions to some of your family challenges. We will work with you on an individual basis to identify and focus on areas of family life that you find challenging and identify steps to address some of these difficulties. And we also offer a monthly drop-in session so you can meet with other families to find support and share experiences. Communications Trust - survey Please see the link to an update from The Communication Trust. Within this is an invitation to participate in a short online survey about the perceived opportunities and challenges of the reformed SEND system for children and young people with Speech, Language & Communication Needs (SLCN). Disability Rocks! Another recommendation from a parent… “This is a unique, fun event and a fantastic opportunity for our young people. We went as a family to the one held in Yorkshire over this Half term. The parent organisers are coming to the South for the first time ever this year and need some extra support to help promote this event! The Curly Hair Project …would like to invite you to a workshop taster session after school on Thursday 18th June in Kingston upon Thames; this is a 90 minute session covering a range of material, including: What is Autism Spectrum Disorder? Anxiety in Autism Spectrum Disorders Teenagers on the Spectrum There will be a talk with some interactive elements from 4pm to 5.10pm and from 5.10pm to 5.30pm it is your chance to ask questions. The event will be hosted by local charity Express CIC and delivered by the curly hair project.
