FAMILY TIME! Happy stable families equal a happy, stable society. There’s absolutely no argument about that. But what constitutes a family? For our wonderful cover couple, Paul and Sarah, their five lovable hounds are their family. For the fun and extremely likeable Kunene and Clüver families we’ve featured in this
issue, it’s the entire team of family members who work together and seem truly happy in each other’s space. That is exactly what has made the Hirsch’s so successful. They have worked tirelessly together as a family to build the company into what it is today. Their solid work ethic – similar to the families we’ve featured – has been instilled in them from spending time together, to thrashing out issues and making sure everyone is on the same page. I have really enjoyed putting this issue together as it’s full of delightful success stories. From the families mentioned above to the awesome regional winners of our Margaret Hirsch Women In Business Achievers competition, Dr Tamara Pheiffer, Patricia Schroeder, and our Entrepreneurs Workshops that have seen fledgling businesses turn the corner to success, thanks to the wise guidance of people like Margaret and Allan and Business Coach, Marlene Powell. And, of course, to our super suppliers! The magazine would not exist without your support. Thank you! Enjoy the read and spending happy family time together. not like or approve of the changes, but in most cases we accept them for the better. To give an example, I’ve always been aware of food wastage in the world. From a recent trip to the 2019 IFA (pictured right) – the world’s leading trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances – in Germany, some of the suppliers had alarmingly graphic displays of how much food is wasted by a German family in a year, and also how much food

Some fridges have a vacation mode on them, so if you’re going away, you put on the vacation mode, and the fridge will keep its temperature cool without running continuously and wasting energy. It’s a fact that the major trends in family structures over the last few decades have shifted. Gender equality is no longer a dream, it’s a reality. More and more women are opting to have a career and at the same time raise a family. I have seen so many single mothers, who really deserve medals, for managing and growing their businesses and, simultaneously, raising children who have gone on to be great achievers and a credit to society. I was recently invited to two neighbouring countries to help motivate the girls and women, many of whom have almost given up on their dreams of achieving anything in life. In Zimbabwe – the country of my birth – I was blown away by their enthusiasm. They are 6 • AT HOME WITH HIRSCH’S

the time was used mainly for summer grazing. It was Gertrud, Paul’s wife, who took up the reigns of the farm and planted the first apples trees. She was also determined to uplift the community and built a school in the area, which started with two classrooms and a handful of children. Today it caters for over 1 000 pupils. Gertrud’s son, Paul, a neurosurgeon, and his lovely wife Songvei took over the running of the Clüver estate in the 70s, building it up to be one of the finest apple farms in the region, with Paul being awarded the Farmer of the Year in the 90s. Cool FAMILY FAVOURITES! FRIDGES ARE VERY MUCH PART OF THE FAMILY HOUSEHOLD. THEY ARE THE GO-TO PLACE FOR A QUICK SNACK, A GLASS OF WATER OR A BOTTLE OF CHILLED SPARKLING WINE. THEY ALSO KEEP OUR FOOD SUPER FRESH, AND THE LATEST TREND IN FRIDGES SEES ALL FOOD TYPES STAYING FRESHER FOR SO MUCH LONGER
T
he Hirsch team recently visited the IFA Appliance and Electronics Fair in Germany earlier this year and were hugely impressed with technology that is keeping food fresher for much longer. “Fridge manufacturers spoke about wastage when food
is not kept at the right temperature, and ways to prevent this from happening. The latest fridges have food sensors inside them – red lights that shine when food starts to go off, allowing you to either eat or cook the food in good time before it’s too late,” commented Allan. Here are some of our favourite fridges to beat the heat this summer.
THE GRUNDIG CONNOISSEUR 4-DOOR WINE COOLER FRIDGE Behind one of the four doors lies a wine cooler that is as practical as it is elegant, and can store 28 bottles in adjustable temperatures between +5°C and +20°C. Sitting on telescopic wooden shelves behind a foamed, UV filtered glass door, and additionally protected by an odour filter, the wines are always showcased. HIRSCH’S CODE: 65964

THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING! At the recent ECR House & Garden Show the Hirsch family got together in the Discover Durban Cuisine kitchen to cook up a mini storm for visitors to the show. The Hirsch’s chose dishes that were predominantly from their own recipe books, and the result was a mouthwatering feast of note. Needless to say, the audience vote was for the puddings –

valuable parts. These parts are illegally sold to scrap dealers and end up going to countries like China, Nigeria, India, Vietnam, Pakistan. Through compliant and licenced local recyclers and treatment facilities, the value is kept within the country, and the non-valuable parts are responsibly treated and recycled with no impact to humans or the environment. Be cautious. When throwing
out electronic waste, check the company’s credentials first, and ensure you are provided with a recycling certificate (which will have the licence number on it as issued by the Department of Environmental Affairs), proving that the waste was treated compliantly and environmentally responsibly. “It is up to us as consumers to take individual action to ensure our electronic and
