he Hirsch’s team, their contractors and suppliers, in the space of only 28 days, managed to transform what was once a bounce venue with wall-to-wall interconnected trampolines into a breathtakingly sleek and streamlined showroom. The Hirsch’s opened their first branch in Gauteng in Fourways in 2002. At the time they had four branches – all in KZN. Today, 20 years later, they have 14 branches and six concept stores spread throughout KZN, Gauteng and the Cape (see map on page 64 for details). Richard, CEO of Hirsch’s, was overjoyed at the opening: “We are excited about our new Waterfall store – and so grateful to all the customers who have supported us over the last 43 years. With the opening of this store, we have gone back to our roots. “When I asked my dad why he opened his very first shop in a busy road in Durban North, he said that back then – when he first opened the shop in 1979 – you could never find the guy who fixed appliances like your fridge or washing machine.

WELCOME HOME :: MESSAGE FROM ALLAN

THE FUTURE

is bright FAMILY PAST AND PRESENT ARE IMPORTANT TO ME, AND ARE THE CORNERSTONE ON WHICH THE HIRSCH BRAND HAS BEEN BUILT, AND WILL GROW GOING FORWARD

I

’ve been planning to write a book about Hirsch’s and my family for years now. Why? Because I really believe my family history is very interesting. My grandfather and his siblings left

6 • AT HOME WITH HIRSCH’S

Lithuania when he was about 12 years old. They settled in London for a while and he became a rabbi. He then went to China before coming to South Africa and eventually settled in Israel.

My grandfather was one of four children, and tracing the lineage of his siblings over the years has been an eye-opener for me. From humble beginnings, it is amazing to see how well these people have done. I had almost completed the book when Covid hit, and my instinct was that I could not possibly leave this out of the book. Then in 2021 we had the upheaval of rioting and looting, and again I thought I could definitely not leave this incident out of the book. As I write this it’s still early in the year, but I am looking forward to what lies ahead in 2022! It’s bound to be an exciting year with something else to add to my family story. As I enter my 75th year I am handing over most of my duties to an incredibly good team. I am surrounded by people I trust, rely and depend on, who understand the founder’s mentality, so I can

go off into semi-retirement with peace of mind. I will still be around, but to see the company move forward and grow without us – this will be my greatest joy. I can assure everyone my son Richard and daughter Luci will still be part of the business and will continue to work with our team who have committed themselves to

To see the company move forward and grow without us – this will be my greatest joy ensuring the business will survive and thrive. Best of all, we also have five grandsons coming up through the ranks – so I see a bright and exciting future for Hirsch’s. H

WELCOME HOME :: MESSAGE FROM MARGARET

memorable year A TRULY

THERE’S MUCH TO CELEBRATE IN 2022 –

PERSONALLY, FROM A BUSINESS POINT OF VIEW,

AND THE FACT THAT A DEGREE OF NORMALITY IS CREEPING BACK INTO OUR LIVES

T

his year is a particularly memorable year for Allan and I. It’s Allan’s 75th birthday, it’s our 50th wedding anniversary, and this year will be spent celebrating our walk together on this journey called life. It’s going to be a very exciting year because as part of our celebration, we’re taking our children and grandchildren to Disneyland in the States. We have also been invited by Smeg to attend Euro Cucina – the international Kitchen Trade Show – in Europe, which is being held in Italy in June. After the restrictions we’ve lived with for the past two years, it’s going to be wonderful to be travelling again. The most memorable event for Hirsch’s this year, so far, has been the opening of our Mega store at Waterfall in Midrand. We truly believe it will

8 • AT HOME WITH HIRSCH’S

become our flagship store, and would like to thank Joewell Pillay and Mario Titus for heading it up for us. We wish them every success going forward. As women we are always taught to be resilient. Never have we had to be more resilient than to survive and thrive through Covid,

through looting, through strikes, and yet still keep on running a business, our family and our own lives too. After two long years of Covid, we are over the moon to finally start having events in store again. We held our first in-store Kitchen Capers event at our

Smeg store in Constantia Village Mall earlier this year where we teamed up with our super neighbour, Theresa from Prashad Café. It was a fun morning and enjoyed by all. We also launched our new Constantia Village Mall ladies networking event in March and had a great turnout. It was so wonderful to get everyone together in person again. We hope to increase our in-store promotions and go back to having events in our stores again, including our Kitchen Capers, Motivational Mondays, Women Working Wonders, Property Talk and our very popular Entrepreneurs Workshops. These events have been a wonderful way to get people networking and working together. Although we will be holding the events in store once again, they will also be live streamed around the world. So much to look forward to in 2022! H

F

ifty years of marriage is an amazing achievement in these modern times. A strong partnership takes special people to work alongside each other and to support each other. That is how this partnership has evolved – even before they started Hirsch’s and during the long climb over the last 50 years. Solid principles that my parents have in their marriage revolve around open communication and absolute honesty. But I think the most important factor is a good sense of humour. We have these same values at Hirsch’s, where people are invited to speak openly and as directly as possible. Being a family operation,

moving with the times

– AT HIRSCH’S

I

recently saw a meme on social media that said, I want to apologise to all the 40 year olds I called old when I was 23. It rang rather true in my world. Not only am I approaching mid-40s (Eeekk!) but add a couple of teenage children to the mix and you really have to wonder if being born in the late 70s puts you on the back foot, or do you

12 • AT HOME WITH HIRSCH’S

just get to enjoy the best of both worlds? Systems have definitely changed over the years, and I have to say, mostly for the better. Although Covid threw travel out the window for a while – it’s back and as manageable as ever. In the 1990s when we flew, we had to hang on to printed out E-tickets and flimsy boarding passes. Today, once you’ve downloaded the airline app, you’re ready to go! Yes, you have to jump over a couple of hurdles before you get on that plane – but once that is done, you are good to fly. The same can be said for the appliance industry. I recently spent some time in the Miele kitchen in our gorgeous flagship Hirsch’s uMhlanga Homestore, and left feeling quite mesmerised. It’s easy to see that their extensive research and latest finds in technology have resulted in userfriendly, beautiful-looking products that will definitely put your home appliances into a league of their own. There’s a saying, elke pot kry sy deksel (there’s a lid for every pot) and the same can be said for choosing appliances and kitchens. Some people are drawn to heavy duty industrial units that stand out and create a bold statement in a

kitchen, while others prefer a classic bespoke look. Often I’m asked for recommendations, which is always tricky if I don’t know the person’s personal style and family needs – so I usually suggest a walk around one of our beautifully laid-out stores. When you see the appliances in our

Systems have definitely changed over the years, and I have to say, mostly for the better fitted kitchens your eye will naturally be drawn to what is visually salient for your home. Our sales team are highly trained in the vast range of products we stock, and once they explain the features of the different appliances to you – you will be surprised at how easy it is to find the one that best suits your needs. I have always said that when you shop at Hirsch’s you leave with so much more than just the appliance you purchased. You leave with peace of mind and a great deal too! H

HIRSCH’S :: CELEBRATION

WE HAVE

walked this journey together 50 YEARS OF MARRIAGE HAS BROUGHT ALLAN AND MARGARET CLOSER TOGETHER. DESPITE INITIAL FAMILY DISSENT OVER THE MARRIAGE, THEY WENT AHEAD, FORGING ONE OF THE MOST ENDEARING AND SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIPS IN SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESS HISTORY

T

o some people 50 years is a lifetime, but to Allan and Margaret Hirsch, their 50 years of marriage has blessed them with many joys – big and small – and especially the support and togetherness each of them brings to the other. As a celebration of their journey together, Allan and Margaret take a walk down memory lane …

14 • AT HOME WITH HIRSCH’S

FIRST IMPRESSION Allan: I first met Margaret at a cricket dinner. She was wearing boots that came up to her knees … and a skirt that was nowhere near her knees. I obviously noticed her, and she noticed me as well. Margaret knows a good thing when she sees it and 11 months later we were married.

AGAINST ALL ODDS Margaret: Allan and I met at a party on May 7 in 1971 and from that moment we were inseparable. Inseparable until he told his family he was going to marry me. At that point he was promptly sent to Israel to find a wife. But luckily he didn’t! He came back to South Africa and we told my family we wanted to get married. They were also against the marriage, and in fact I was told to wait until I was 21 – which I did. I turned 21 in December, we got engaged in January and married on April 7, 1972.

R900 – LET’S START HIRSCH’S Allan: I was in the final year of my apprenticeship as an appliance mechanic and Margaret was a secretary for a building society. We really had a great courtship and our marriage was fantastic – it still is. I eventually got frustrated as an appliance mechanic because I could not see where I was going. When I found out I was dyslexic and not stupid, I believed I could do anything. And that’s when I decided I wanted to open my own business. At that stage we had R900 saved. We had to buy a bakkie and get premises – and without even blinking Margaret said let’s do it. That was the start of Hirsch’s. 16 • AT HOME WITH HIRSCH’S

BELOW: Family

ABOVE: Fifty years on, Margaret and Allan still find time to share a laugh.

FAMILY AND BUSINESS Margaret: At that stage Allan was earning R25 a week as a refrigeration apprentice and I was working at the old Johannesburg Building Society as PA to the assistant manager. We

were married for four years when our son Richard was born in 1976, and 17 months later in 1978 our daughter Luci arrived and completed our family. By now we owned our own home in Glen Anil and decided on January 31, 1979 to open our own business.

We found premises at 169 uMhlanga Rocks Drive and Hirsch’s was born. We worked very hard and diligently but soon outgrew the premises, so when the old butchery down the road at No 27 came up for sale, we bought that and so started our property business.

so many ways,” adds Allan. “Our greatest joy is when team members

started their business. “That was a fantastic decision and we made it because we believed in ourselves. We believed we could do it and there was no doubt. Over the years, trying to enjoy a social life, grow the business, have a family life, we found we were working longer hours, focusing more on our family and growing the business at the same time. Best of all, we were doing this together, as a team. “Our employees, suppliers and

tell us they have bought their own home or their children are going to a good school or university – or things of that nature – and it’s these stories that make our journey worthwhile,” comments Margaret. The Hirsch’s both agree they have been truly blessed with having seen as much of the world as they really wanted to. “Working together and seeing the world together has grown Margaret and myself so much. We have both learnt a lot from each other about the business, and

life itself. In the early days we used to argue – but then eventually we realised it served no purpose. I cannot remember the last time we had an argument. You don’t have to agree with everyone all the time, but you can listen and accept what they say and move on,” says Allan.

LAST WORD FROM MARGARET “Although we are both very different people, we both enjoy each other’s company, have fun together, and work together incredibly well. We have both travelled different paths in our working careers and those paths have worked well for us and have brought us even closer.” What a team! H

She says her family has always been her number one priority. “As a parent we often ponder what the most important lessons we should be teaching our children are. For now, my main lesson is quite simple – in a world where you can be anything, just remember to always be kinder than you feel.” • Considering your workload, what inspired you to enter Mrs South Africa? “The year prior to me entering I had the privilege of watching a group of women – who I’m grateful to now call friends – enter ahead of me. I witnessed their transformation as their journey progressed, and it was nothing short of awe-inspiring. I had already identified that I needed a shift in my life, I had a feeling of personal unfulfillment and needed a catalyst for change. Research has shown that the majority of people who stick to a traditional diet are very healthy and have a low risk of many chronic conditions. Although there are no strict rules or regulations for the diet, it typically encourages fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and heart-healthy fats (think olive oil). The Mediterranean diet can promote weight loss and help prevent heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes, and premature death. It also has been shown to decrease insulin resistance and protects brain function. H

A vegan diet is linked to a number of health benefits, including weight loss, improved heart health and better blood sugar control. For the sceptics who don’t believe they will get the required amount of protein in their diet, think again. Soy products are among the richest sources of protein in a plant-based diet. The protein content varies depending on how the soy is prepared. Tofu and tempeh have the highest quota of protein, lentils are also high in protein, as are chickpeas, almonds, peanuts, spirulina, quinoa, chia seeds and hemp seeds. There are also many protein rich vegetables, including dark leafy greens, broccoli and potatoes. AT HOME WITH HIRSCH’S •

outh Africa has an abundance of amazing, strong, inspirational and powerful women – women who manage to juggle a variety of functions. Prior to the pandemic we met many of them at the Hirsch’s Women in Business networking gatherings, the Margaret Hirsch Women in Business Achiever monthly awardees, and more recently, the guest speakers at our Women Working Wonders virtual events hosted by Margaret. One such guest speaker at the Women Working Wonders event was Pearl Osa – businesswoman, public speaker, wife, finalist in the Mrs South Africa pageant, and probably the one thing that sets her apart is the fact that she is the mother to 11 children who she home schools. So, a very rare Pearl indeed. How does she do it? How does she manage a large family, a business, a social life and work with charities?

“Firstly, I have been very deliberate to learn and pursue my life’s purpose and calling. I am crystal clear about the fact that in the midst of this purpose are seasons, undulations and different parts. I fulfil the various parts of my life’s assignment in the relevant seasons. Every fruit I am now manifesting is a result of the seeds sown at a different season. Even now I continue to sow seeds in preparation for the next season, the next assignment and the next opportunity. “Right now I am having the time of my life as a public speaker and home schooling mom of my 11 biological children. This season of my life is allowing me to explore my creative side which I’ve done by writing four books, singing duets with my husband, creating content for the brands I represent, as well as other media productions,” Pearl explains. “We run a family business, and family is the first order of business. Everyone gets involved and plays their part. My husband is a rock. My children are being brought up to be contributing and productive members of society, starting at home,” Pearl says. And for the children – what’s it like

PEARL’S 5 TIPS FOR MOMS 1. Don’t question your worth; your worth to you and to the team, at work or at home. Knowing your worth enables you to negotiate befittingly. 2. Know why you do what you do. There is nothing like balance. In the end, everything balances, but while we juggle, some things are bound to get more attention than others. 3. Be kind to yourself and accept

growing up in a big family of 10 boys and one girl? We love what 17-year-old Ray, the Osa’s oldest child, had to say. “I enjoy having all of us together; we’re building incredible memories. Whether we’re getting together socially or having a heated disagreement, there’s never a dull moment … never a shortage of fun, friends and entertainment. I get to be inspired by and exposed to different personalities. “Being the oldest has its perks because I get certain privileges that my siblings don’t have yet. However, it can be demanding sometimes, because it’s important to always do your best, step up to the plate and lead by example, whether you feel like it or not,” says Ray. kindness from others. In fact, build a kind community around you and be kind to them in return. If it feels like discipline, hang in there. It will be good for you. 4. Sometimes the sacrifice calls for a lot of backsteps. Things may seem to be beneath you but if you know where you are going, you will not be ashamed of where you are. Fix your eyes on the end goal. 5. Have faith. This means different things to different people. Whatever it means to you, hold on to that. We all need something to believe in.

Beko – part of Arçelik, a multinational household appliances manufacturer which also includes Defy and Grundig brands in South Africa – is one of the top three large home appliances brands in Europe and offers hi-tech quality products with sustainability at its heart. With the goal of empowering new generations to live healthier, Beko has focused on making this choice a convenient one for consumers via a wide range of appliances. From fridges with Everfresh + technology that keep your fruit and vegetables fresher for up to three times longer, to disinfectant ovens that can sanitise baby bottles, to microwaves that can cook meals in minutes, there’s something for everyone. Beko has not only broadened its mission to recognise that healthy living is only possible on a healthy planet, but it has also committed to protecting the earth by designing

and manufacturing energy-efficient products and investing in resource efficiency in production. “The pandemic revolutionised consumer priorities, with the average consumer becoming more aware of the planetary stakes every day. Consumers are now looking for companies to create value for their communities and the environment. In the aftermath of Covid-19, customers desire a cleaner conscience. They are open to energy-efficient, sustainable products that limit the destructive impact we may leave on the planet,” said Rajan Gungiah, Beko Regional Marketing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa. “With the home now doubling as a multi-functional hub, time management has become a consumer priority,” says Gungiah. As consumers adjust to life after the pandemic, technologies that focus on longevity and sustainability will become more prominent, and Beko promises that its appliances will have short and smart programmes that make them more energy- and time-efficient. Keeping sustainability, the environment and the consumer at the forefront of Beko’s offering, the brand will now be stocked

nationwide at Hirsch’s Home Appliance Stores, currently SA's largest independent home appliance retailer in the country. Chief Executive Officer at Hirsch’s, Richard Hirsch, said that Hirsch’s were delighted to have Beko products in a selection of their branches nationwide. “We believe the values of Beko align with what consumers are looking for in a post-Covid world, and we look forward to inviting Beko customers through our doors,” he exclaimed. “Partnering with Hirsch’s Home Appliance Stores allows Beko to reach our customers who are looking for technologically advanced, sustainable products to suit their choice to live healthier lifestyles, always keeping the consumer in mind,” concludes Gungiah about Beko’s partnership in Hirsch’s Home Appliance Stores. LOVE IS IN THE AIR…FRYER To celebrate the month of love, Hirsch’s and Philips got together for a “Love Is In The Airfryer” cook-off. To enter, couples (married, engaged or friends and family) were asked to submit recipes they would like to cook in the Philips Airfryer. Three KZN couples were chosen and the cook-off took place at Hirsch’s uMhlanga branch. Spar Park Square and uMhlanga Rocks SuperSpar kindly donated the food for the cook-off. Winning the event with their delicious, nutritious burger, followed

Coming second with their crunchy and tasty Mexican inspired cheesy nachos and berry filled pastry cases were newly married Jarryd and Savannah Du Toit who won a Philips Pro Mix Stick Blender. In third place with their spicy and tasty chicken tikka dish with salad and garlic bread followed by jam tart were friends Trish Singh and Jennifer Naidoo who won a Philips Blender each. HIRSCH’S :: GIVING BACK ISSUE 14 WINTER 2022

NEW BEGINNINGS Charles and Val Kadalie’s life’s work has been to help rehabilitate prisoners. They recently contacted Margaret to see if she could help with items for a kitchen for Arthi’s Kitchen – a small catering business run by a man who had been incarcerated for several years – to help him get his business off the ground. Margaret came to the rescue with appliances for a fully functional kitchen. Allan and Margaret were invited to pop in for the opening. FAMILIES HELPING FAMILIES When Margaret heard that another family-run business, Fotomax, had been totally destroyed during the looting in KZN in July last year, she offered the company a new lease on life with premises at Hirsch’s head office. “I was devastated to hear that the Fotomax building in Riverhorse Valley had burnt down, but we are South Africans and we are resilient. I had space at our offices in Umgeni Road and invited them to move in,” said Margaret.

BEDS FOR HOUSE OF HOPE The House of Hope in Pretoria rehabilitates girls who have lived on the street – or who have been trafficked. Hirsch’s and Cloud Nine and Rest Assured recently donated beds to the centre, which is run by a group of wonderful women who donate their time to the cause. Margaret gave an inspiring talk to the women, encouraging them to know their value and worth, and how to set goals.

A MATRIC BALL TO REMEMBER When the matric pupils from Iterele Zenzele Secondary School in Diepsloot heard they were going to have a matric ball, they could not believe their ears. Pupils at the school had never had a matric ball before, but this changed when past pupil and Mrs SA contestant, the lovely Mpho Mogotsi, together with Margaret and a contingent of Mrs South Africa finalists, visited their school. Mpho and Margaret found suitable attire for the pupils and managed to raise enough money for everything needed to make the night a thoroughly memorable one. The ball was held at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways. H

online?

BRADLEY GOVENDER, HIRSCH’S ONLINE MANAGER, HAS TAKEN HIRSCH’S ONLINE SHOPPING ZONE TO A NEW LEVEL OFFERING CUSTOMERS THE DISNEY SHOPPING EXPERIENCE – AN EXPERIENCE THEY WILL NEVER FORGET

W

hat an amazing year it has been for our online platform. We have been blessed with an exceptional growth of 22,11% year on year, with more than 4,398,768 users visiting our website. An incredible achievement! With continuous growth and an ever-growing client base, Hirsch’s website is on its way to becoming a serious contender in the online market. Thanks to our team, Simone, Swasti, Preline, Ana, Trisha, Elisha, Sandhya, Justin and Rivona who have put endless hours of hard work into making the website the success it is today. This team makes

sure we stick to the basics – and of course our priority is our customers. There has definitely been a change in shopping trends since restrictions were eased last year, with online shopping increasing daily as more people find it so much more convenient to shop online. The majority of our online sales come from home appliances like washing machines, fridges and dishwashers, but we have noticed that over the last six months consumers are purchasing more high-tech products and accessories like TVs, cellphones and home audio equipment. However, dishwashers take the prize for being our best

online sellers. Behind the scenes we have some fantastic projects planned for our website this year, one of which is the integration of our Point Of Sale system to the website. This will give us the advantage of automating our admin process, making us better, smarter and faster. We have also brought on a new delivery team, who are committed to making sure all our deliveries are completed within 48 hours with the option of a same-day delivery. In addition, we have upgraded our live chat because this is a key element to our website and allows us to interact with our customers on a more personal level. Another important factor is that we have integrated our website and partnered with Vodacom to become listed on the Vodapay app as a retailer. This allows our customers to have easier access through an alternate portal. Our goal is to have a streamlined process from the moment the customer logs on to our website to the minute the product is delivered. This must be an easy and hasslefree transaction. In other words, our aim is to give every single one of our customers the Disney experience. H
