THANK YOU I really must thank you for the response I'm getting from the Take Note piece which appeared in the July issue on page 5. I've had a number of phone calls and many feet through the door directly as a result of the magazine write-up. I make a point of asking new customers how they heard about the shop and often they say, "I read about it in The Ridge, so decided to come and check it out". Often people say they have never been to Flanders Mall – but it’s so friendly they’ll be back. – Meryl, Sew Hello

For the last decade sisters Zainab and Faatimah Paruk – both qualified chefs –have been making their indelible mark on Durban’s collective palate through their catering company, Chilli Chocolate Chefs. Now they are passing on that knowledge to their followers through a luxurious 240-page book entitled Bringing It Home “Our inspiration for this cookbook stemmed largely from listening to our customers. They want simple, uncomplicated yet delicious food. After 10 years in the food business, we really wanted to create something that went right back to basics and spoke to our customers’ needs. We wanted to showcase the flavours we grew up with together with different preparation techniques. Bringing It Home encapsulates the simple joys of creating food that tastes as good as it
looks – if not better – with even the most basic skills and in a short amount of time,” say the sisters.

• Other cans like tinned foods are commonly recycled.
Janet Simpkins, founder and director of Adopt a River (and Adopt a Beach) Eco Solutions, offers these rules for recycling: We all generate waste, that’s a fact, however we can certainly choose to dispose of this in a more responsible manner. Choosing a reputable recycler is key. You want to know that all your hard work doesn’t land up in landfill. The most convenient is a one-stop, drop-all kind of place, which are usually attached to large shopping malls and have someone employed to talk you through recycling 101.

OPENED IN SEPTEMBER 2001, GATEWAY THEATRE OF SHOPPING IS COMING OF AGE. CELEBRATING 21 YEARS AT THE FOREFRONT OF RETAIL AND ENTERTAINMENT, THE MALL INVITES SHOPPERS TO JOIN IN THE FUN AND LOOK FORWARD TO EVEN MORE EXCITING TIMES AHEAD TURNS 21
“So much has happened at the mall over the past 21 years,” says Gateway GM, Feysel Potgieter. “We’ve hosted international artists, surfing competitions, skating competitions, record-breaking charity events and been a venue for hot dates. Couples have been married here; a few babies have even been delivered at “EveryoneGateway. seems to have a fond memory of something they’ve enjoyed at Gateway,”

September’s a month of celebrations at Gateway. Visitors can andspontaneousexpectactivationsthechancetorecallthe wonderful memories they’ve made at the super-regional centre.
says Feysel. “To celebrate this, we’ve created the interactive Museum of Memories at the Expo Explore court.”
The Museum of Memories is a captivating walk-through experience reminding visitors about Gateway’s origins and 21 years as a “theatre of shopping”. Older visitors will remember the Tony Hawk Skate Park and D-Rex standing wave, while younger visitors will marvel at the experience virtually.
“Celebrating how far we’ve come – from an idea in a field of sugarcane to one of the country’s biggest, most successful retail attractions, is something worth sharing,” saysTheFeysel.landlord, Old Mutual Properties (OMP), 9SEPT-OCT 2022 pioneered the vision of Gateway in the mid1990s when Moreland Properties began what was a revolutionary development on the uMhlanga Ridge. “The initial plan was for a modest retail centre.” In a bold move which demonstrated staggering confidence in the potential of the New Town precinct and greater uMhlanga Ridge, OMP started construction of the 118 000m² mall at a cost of around R1,4-billion in 1998. “Fifty-two of the original tenants who started trading when we opened in 2001 are still here today,” says Feysel. “We’re nothing without our tenants, so, as a tribute to them, the Museum of Memories includes a Wall of Recognition where we pay tribute to these 52 original tenants.”
Artistically constructed as a “2 and a 1”, the Museum of Memories opens in the Expo Explore area from September 7. Entrance is free and visitors can browse through the exhibit during trading hours.
A NEW LOOK FOR THE FUTURE
Scaffolding is going up as the first phase of a major internal refurbishment gets underway in mid-September. The main spine of the building will be completely remodelled in phases over the next 12 months. “It’s going to look magnificent, and new suspended features, flooring and facades will give Gateway a fresh look. There will be some inconvenience for a while, but the results will be well worth it,” says Feysel. »
MUSEUM OF MEMORIES
When Gateway Theatre of Shopping opened 21 years ago, it promised to be “everything that you could want, more than you could imagine”. As a retail concept, Old Mutual Properties’ MD at the time, Ian Watt, championed the development of what was going to be far more than just a regular mall. With a staggering 40% of the space dedicated to entertainment, Gateway introduced “shoppertainment” to SouthSomeAfrica.naysayers predicted its rapid decline, others were dismayed, but it didn’t take long before going to Gateway became “the thing to do”. There were so many reasons to spend more time there. To bring the kids, it was somewhere you could spend the entire day, lose track of time and have fun. The relaxed vibe at Gateway is due in no small part to the way the building and precinct are designed.
ATTRACTING MILLIONS
The mall’s been a magnet for the rich and famous since it opened – and we’re not just talking shopaholics. When Black Friday became “a thing” in SA, bargain-hunters flooded to Gateway to take advantage of the specials – but that wasn’t the most manic time the current marketing team recalls. It was the Trolls! On a whistle-stop national tour, over 16 000 fans lined up over four days to get close to their heroes Branch and Poppy. Mark Shuttleworth delivered a speech at the Science Centre, Skrillex played at the Wave House, and Chris Brown has strolled through the mall. The World of Illusions shattered previous records and the marketing move to pop-up, high-quality activations is proving popular. Currently adding colour and intrigue to profile pics, stories and posts is the exquisite Bloom Room. Up until early October, the intricate floralscapes will provide breath-taking backdrops for spontaneous snaps and professional shoots. With the balmy weather and influx of holidaymakers, Gateway moves into top gear over the festive season. Dressing up with festive lights, spectacular fun holiday scenarios and virtual experiences, last year was Gateway’s busiest December to date.
Gateway hosts around 25-million+ visitors annually which works out to over two million visitors a month, with this number swelling to around 3,2-million in December.GatewayTheatre of Shopping has taken on a life of its own over the past 21 years, with remodelling, upgrading and extensions. The two biggest expansions were completed in 2008 and 2018. OMP invested R250-million in extensions to the South Mall in 2008, and the Gateway Hotel and Virgin Active node were developed ahead of the 2010 World Cup. To increase capacity, the new Woolworths node was created in 2018 and the food court relocation included an outdoor area that floods the indoor space with natural light. The Palm Court

The mall has attracted top international and local brands, making it a convenient one-stop destination for discerning shoppers who travel from around KwaZulu-Natal to access wider ranges, flagship offerings, niche brands and a world-class experience. International trends in the “affordable luxury” category make Gateway a priority retail destination. Fashionistas can shop at Zara, Ted Baker, EA7, Armani Exchange and Versace Jeans to name a few. EMPLOYABILITY – WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
CAMPUS
EMPLOYABLE,
If you ask most HR or talent managers, team leaders and CEOs looking for future employees to join their team, they will most likely describe the ideal candidate using words such as “can-do” attitude, showing initiative, being pro-active, a problem-solver, confident presenter with computer efficiency. Descriptions in adverts will state that they are looking for someone with grit and agility, able to collaborate and work in a team, with

We raise our kids with such care. We work hard to get them through school, and ideally into higher education, in the hope that they will get a good job afterwards. We invest in their education – and consider it a future investment – something that will set them up forAndlife. that is where we need to pause a little. An investment in their future. With any investment one would consider what exactly you are investing in. Before you invest, you will usually do research, ask questions, compare your options, and then carefully consider, before you commit. Higher education is obtaining a credible qualification that ultimately serves as a step into an industry of your choice. And with that, parents want to know that their kids will graduate being employable. So the big question is … what makes graduates employable?
THERE’S MORE TO INVESTING IN YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE THAN JUST A DEGREE. BEFORE CHOOSING A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION, EXPLORE WHAT INDUSTRY-READY AND REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE WILL BE OFFERED TO HELP MAKE YOUR CHILD MORE WRITES NARETHA PRETORIUS, HEAD AT IIE-VEGA SCHOOL

There are two critical things at play here: 1) Soft skills (and future skills), and 2) Experience. Soft skills such as grit, agility, and the ability to collaborate and solve problems are only truly learnt through application – you must do it, to master it. This, combined with the requirement of a minimum two years’ experience, suggests that gaining practical and relevant experience during your studies and even before you graduate, matters.

In other words, parents and learners need to ask higher education institutions of their choice, what industry-ready and real-world experience they will gain during their studies, as an integral component of the programme design and an institutional teaching methodology. What do they do to ensure students gain relevant industry-based experience? What opportunities do students have to build their industry network? The ideal is a confident student graduating with a portfolio of work demonstrating industry relevant experience, applied soft skills (and future skills) with real-world and real-client projects they have worked on. Now that is a good investment – and the ticket to an employable future.

Then the logic is, for parents, to invest in higher education and consider postgraduate studies that produce smart thinkers, and smart doers, with a can-do attitude, and a real-world industry portfolio of work. DUBBED THE “WHITE BUFFALO” BY AMERICAN BOXING PROMOTER DON KING, THE ONCE-FAMOUS FRANCOIS BOTHA HAS OPENED A BOXING AND FITNESS CENTRE IN UMHLANGA AND IS READY TO REVIVE THE BOXING INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA, WRITES GREG ARDÉ the White BUFFALO profile*
“You are out there alone,” Botha drawls, “you have to be prepared. You have to know your opponent’s tactics and you have to train. When I fought Tyson I couldn’t wait to get into the ring. Other guys just run away.” Commentators on the night described the fight as “bedlam in the ring”. Botha and Tyson smack one another with gusto, grunting with each shot. They had to be ripped apart at times, scrapping after the bell rang. In one of a number of vicious clinches, Tyson elbows Botha who rears up and boxes both Tyson’s ears. Commentators called it an alley fight, which Botha mostly won. “Tyson is being out-thought … out stymied … Botha is toying with Tyson … he » Tyson has some killer punches but I heard an interview with Holyfield and he said the person who hit him the hardest was the White Buffalo
At the end of Zenith Drive in uMhlanga Rocks, you might bump into a dude with white hair and steely blue eyes. But, unless you are a sports buff, you won’t know the once-famous Francois Botha who nearly kicked Mike Tyson’s ass. The man dubbed the “White Buffalo” by famed American boxing promoter Don King, was probably better known outside of South Africa than back home. Now aged 53, the former fireman from Witbank has opened a gym in Durban and has set his sights on a goal more fascinating than his already astounding backstory.
15SEPT-OCT 2022
The White Buffalo’s top tip for staying in shape I work out different diets and training regimes for different people to achieve different results. The one I use most to lose weight and prepare for fights is: eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and supper like a soldier. You need the energy when you are awake and active, so if you want chocolate, eat it early in the day.
If you aren’t among the 10 million who have watched the 21-minute fist fury with Mike Tyson on YouTube, here’s a quick recap. Botha got into boxing as a boy and after a few bloody noses developed such a knack for it he got 300 amateur bouts under his belt before he fell in a ditch and broke his arm in his late teens.
Doctors swore he’d never box again. Botha said “only God” got to make that call and so the son of a factory manager and a housewife pounded on. He turned pro in 1990 and won two fights in South Africa before leaving for the US with fewer restrictions on fights and more prize money. “I arrived in Texas and built a record quick. I fought three fights in one night, driving across state lines.”
Botha has eyes like the spaghetti Western star Terence Hill. He has a heavily accented, husky Afrikaner rumble with an occasional American twang after living in the US for 15 years, so words like “boxing” come out as “baaaxing”. In the boxing world, showbusiness is everything and Botha had a chance encounter with Don King, the marketing maestro who branded him the “White Buffalo”. It resonated in the US market especially because of the significance of the buffalo in native American culture. Long story short, Botha was a hit. In all, he fought 63 fights, winning 48, 29 by knockout. In his 40s, he took up kickboxing and at 44 fought 27-year-old All Black Sonny Bill Williams in a match described by the Daily Mail as having “taken a farcical turn” after the Kiwi claimed a controversial victory when Botha “had him on the ropes before the bout was cut short”. Botha’s career saw him take on the world’s greats, including Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, and the titanic clash with Mike Tyson. Films of the fight show up the showmanship of the sport. In-person more than 30 years after the bout, Botha is quiet and unassuming. On TV in the ring, he was a mountain man taunting Tyson.
White Buffalo Boxing & Fitness will train professionals, amateurs and people who just fancy getting fit. Among Botha’s pro projects is his son, Marcel, 33. Botha and his wife Elsje have two children. Their daughter Cecelia lives in the US where Botha hopes to rematch a few of his old foes. “Yeah, I’m still strong,” he says softly. “I know I’ve got it in me. I train hard. I fight hard. It’s mostly mental though. When I lost I never thought my opponent was better than me. I just wasn’t at my best on that night. You got to believe in yourself. Tyson has some killer punches but I heard an interview with Holyfield and he said the person who hit him the hardest was the White Buffalo.” *

It promised to be a huge upset until the 5th round when Tyson unleashed a monster shot that knocked Botha down. “Tyson had a killer punch. He generated tremendous power.” After the Tyson duel, Botha did another 20 professional bouts, half of which he lost. He returned to South Africa and for the most part has lived in KZN where he met Lionel Daniels, his business partner.

Daliwe is the Swazi word for nature which is the inspiration behind the woven blinds, carpets, ceiling coverings, lights and decor items that find their way into some of the world’s top hospitality and interior design spaces. The weaving – using traditional looms – is done at Daliwe Designs’ factory in White River. The panels are then transported to its head office in Cornubia

The Pafuri Makuleke Lodge is a flagship project, but other noteworthy recent ones include Lolebezi Lodge with Fox Brown Creative, the Oppenheimer’s Tswalu Lodge with Savile Row and the Mara Lodge in Kenya. “Our relationships with our architects and designers are very important. I work closely with them, explaining what we do and opening their minds to bringing nature inside into their environments,” sheMariannesays. also bridges the gap between highly skilled rural people who find it difficult to find markets for their products, and designers and architects wanting high-end organic products but not knowing where to find them or how to ensure they meet stringent project deadlines and specifications. Most of all, she believes that one of Daliwe Designs’ greatest achievements is preserving traditional weaving skills and providing employment. The number of people employed is project dependent but there is a core weaving network of 15 to 40 weavers.“Some have been with us for 15 years. They work really hard and make beautiful products. You need to appreciate details like the separation and the straightness of the lines. You require very precise measurements which is extremely difficult to do with an organic product,” she says.
They WinfreywellrulerproductscreatedhavefortheofDubaiasasforOprah explains owner Marianne Pooler. With a background in molecular biology, she had just returned from teaching science overseas when she was invited to visit by business owners who were looking for someone to grow the business to reach its full potential. A detour en route to the Kruger Park had the desired effect. “I saw all these women making blinds, rugs and carpets and creating beautiful murals out of grasses and I fell in love with it there and then,” she recalls. After testing the market by taking samples to 10 Johannesburg designers, she bought a small share of the company in 2004, and within a year her two partners had lost interest in the business and Marianne took over. At the time, she was living in Johannesburg but regularly travelled to the small Mpumalanga factory. She still visits the larger new factory that she opened in White River in 2020, and runs the head office in Durban.
The main raw material used is thoko grass which is harvested in Mpumalanga and then plaited into bundles which the company buys. The same goes for reeds which are collected by locals and sold to the company in two-metre lengths. They are cleaned, cut and either used as is or stripped using a carpet knife so that they can be Variousstained.combinations of these organic materials are used to turn out a variety of different designs that keep pace with everevolving design trends.

1. Bravery is a perspective we choose, not a project we embark on: “You’re so brave!” When Jane found out she was pregnant with twins, she was told this all the time. She would chuckle to herself and think, “Am I really? I mean, you gotta do what you gotta do! These babies are coming whether I’m brave or not!” Jane wasn’t brave because she was having twins, she was brave because of the perspective she chose when she was having twins. Instead of scarcity, she chose abundance. Instead of helpless, she chose hopeful. It is not our risks that make us brave, but our responses to what we can’t control.
2. Brave is showing up instead of shutting down: Yes, there is something about bravery we attribute to other people who take on wild and wonderful challenges, but don’t often recognise that it is also in ourselves. Yet for someone, simply choosing to show up to life, is the most courageous choice we can make. “The morning my gran passed away, I had to do a four-hour radio show,” remembers Jane. “It was a real lesson for me – I could show up and be strong even while my heart was breaking.” Courage means choosing not to numb, or go into despair, or drown in self-pity, while still giving ourselves permission to say, “This is horrible. I wish it wasn’t happening to me.” To be wholehearted is to embrace the full spectrum of human experience, and not delude ourselves into staying just on the negative side of cynicism, or the positive side of denialism.
There are times we choose to numb or avoid the hard parts of our lives. When the shame of that dawns on us, like it did on Jess that awful morning, there is always another opportunity for courage. That opportunity is called self-compassion. Sometimes, the bravest bounce back is to forgive yourself, to show yourself kindness after you’ve let yourself down. Jess couldn’t show up to her gran, but choosing self-compassion for that immature young version of herself, every time the memory surfaces, is an act of courage that Jess chooses over and over again. Have you given yourself permission to be brave lately? Whatever it may be – a beautiful opportunity or a messy regret – it is never too late to be brave. *
When Jane and Jess met each other, within minutes they had discovered a beautiful, serendipitous coincidence – they both had much-loved grandmothers named Joyce. Cut from the same cloth, the Joyces were colourful and creative with a passion for beauty andJessboldness.recalls the coral pink nail polish on Joyce van Straaten’s arthritic hands, and her full-throated, head-tossed back laughter. She was a vivacious woman who loved wholeheartedly. Jane’s gran, Joyce Linley, was passionate about vibrant fashion, taking unashamed delight in dressing up and embracing her expression of personality. So much so, that Jane named her preloved fashion studio – The ReJoyce Collection – in honour of her gran’s love for creativity and colour. She lived in a way that gave Jane permission to be her whole and unashamed self.
Brené Brown, an American researcher, describes this kind of wholehearted approach to life as courageous, and it is what leads us into lives of connection, belonging and worthiness. Would you consider yourself a brave, courageous person? Bravery might mean taking on mountains or going on wild adventures, but often it’s about simply showing up to the unavoidable discomfort that finds us as we live our lives. Here are three ways to know you’re brave.
3. Brave is showing yourself a courageous amount of compassion: Living brave does sound beautiful. But what happens when we mess it up? During her struggle with cancer, Joyce lived with Jess’ family. One night, just before Jess headed out with her friends, her mom reminded her to say goodbye to gran. “I was nineteen years old, a little self-absorbed, a lot areyou BRAVE?

FOR JANE LINLEY-THOMAS AND JESS BASSON, THERE’S MORE TO BEING BRAVE THAN MEETS THE EYE
overwhelmed, and I just didn’t do it,” Jess admits. “But when I woke up in the morning, she was gone. I had missed my chance to say one last goodbye – and it is one of my greatest regrets.”

It was only when Paris went to playschool that the teacher suggested she go for an assessment which resulted in her being diagnosed as autistic with severe mental impairment.
Sheraine and her spouse, Yugen Subraya were not overly concerned when their daughter, Paris, did not talk at the age of three. They put this and her tantrums down to her being a laat lammetjie who had been a bit more spoilt and indulged than she should’ve been. They also assumed she’d talk when she was ready.

“At the time I had been teaching in mainstream for 14 years and knew nothing about autism,” Sheraine says. “With my limited knowledge, I was devastated and predicted a life of doom and dependency for our little girl.” However, as the couple learnt more about autism, so they began to interpret Paris’ behaviour more fully. Her avoidance of touch was due to tactile sensitivity, and the meltdowns were her expressing her intense frustration at not being able to speak and communicate. “It’s traumatic to see your child so utterly distressed,” says Sheraine. “She was experiencing major sensory overload and resorting to extraordinary behaviour to comfort herself.” Devouring every bit of information they could about autism, they made it their mission to give Paris the best chance at living her best life, enrolling her at the Action in Autism Early Intervention Centre in Durban. It was there, under the loving guidance of Kirsten Miller, that Paris spoke her first words. But finding a school where Paris could further her learning became a depressing challenge. “No one was willing to accommodate her special needs and we couldn’t afford private therapy.” In 2014, they decided to do it themselves.

Getting a matric is not the holy grail. Kids who don’t progress academically, are encouraged to start their own businesses, or shadow someone in a trade. “We encourage parents to register a business and start a Facebook page. Doing things like baking, painting, sculpting and creating jewellery. Others find a business where they can shadow artisans and learn – how to make built-in cupboards, do woodwork or fix appliances and computers, there are so many possibilities we can create for our kids. “We’re not miracle workers, just parents who want to change children’s lives and give them what our daughter didn’t have access to and help them accomplish some of what she didn’t get to achieve.” *
LEARNING TO ADAPT Autism Excellence Incredible Minds Therapy Centre provides a calm, accepting learning environment where children’s sensory awareness and development are the number one priority. There are no playschool posters on the wall, no bright murals, the fans stay off during classes and the curtains filter out the bright light. “Addressing the child’s sensory needs is required to get them to an optimal place of communicating, learning and working,” says Sheraine. With the younger non-verbal kids, this means using low- and high-tech communication support to express themselves.“Ittakestime to earn a child’s trust, to let them know you’re addressing them as an individual. It’s a big deal to get those first words out. Just a few random words, then a few that make a phrase, and then be able to converse. It’s extremely rewarding,” says Yugen. “Don’t give up on a non-verbal child as being incapable of communicating.”

LEFT: Yugen, Paris and Sheraine stand in front of some paintings done by Paris – a talent she now pursues as a career.
Sheraine adds: “Our children are intelligent competent human beings. They just have a different intelligence and way of processing sensory input.” The school – which opened in July this year after operating from the couple’s home for the past seven years – caters for children from two-and-ahalf up to Grade 1, to prepare them for a mainstream school. They spend their final year on the Grade 1 curriculum, getting familiar with the content, so they “can go confidently, having learnt to self-regulate their sensory issues and be comfortable in an environment with more than five kids in a class.”
Sheraine rejects the idea that autistic children’s lives must be rigid. “We do have structure and routine; however, we also teach that the world is dynamic and the world changes. A parent’s day can change, and we don’t want a child having a meltdown because the structure of the day has changed. Being able to adapt is an important skill that we integrate into our teaching.”

ATake the initial first step, which in itself is the hardest part, as you don’t know what you are capable of doing until you do it. All it takes is hard work and determination. Block out negativity and focus on your strengths; you will have many obstacles and you will put in many hours, but it will all be worth it in the end. Make sure you never stop seeking knowledge and always emphatically make time for self-care. *
ADecide what it is you want your business to represent, focus on your core principles, plan, come up with a strategy, build a solid company culture as happy staff equals happy clients, but most important of all, always keep your integrity intact. Do not be disheartened by failure, it is part of the process, always keep going.

A typical heart has two upper and two lower chambers, and in a resting adult, it beats between 60 and 100 times a minute, circulating between 50 to 100ml of blood with every beat. The heart’s rate and rhythm are regulated by electrical signals travelling along pathways to the left or the right side of the bottom chambers (ventricles) of theWhenheart.the heart beats irregularly – also known as arrhythmia – the causes are often blockages or other interferences with these electrical pulses and pathways.

IN TODAY’S BUSY WORLD IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO LINGER, WRITES CHRISTY HERSELMAN
The irony of this moment does not escape me. I sit writing this article amidst probably the busiest five days I have had this year so far. I have done 12 talks in three cities, missed two of my sons’ hockey matches and my daughter’s surfing competition. I have slept way too little and worked way too much. Meals have been on the fly and most of my conversations with my husband have consisted entirely of logistics. And yet I know that this cannot be my normal. Busy times are par for the course, but busy lives rob us of so many things, including the sweet gift of lingering. I knew that these few days would be crazy and so did my family, but I knew that tonight I would get to linger around the dinner table with my family, celebrating the 13th birthdays of my twin boys. And I cannot wait. I love the dictionary definition of “to linger”: to stay in a place longer than necessary because of a reluctance to leave. It is such a wonderful feeling and more crucial to our emotional and relational well-being than we might think: One more bedtime story even though it’s a school night, beach days that turn into sundowners, conversations around the dinner table while the dishes go unwashed … there is something sacred and beautiful about lingering. And as it turns out, lingering is as important as it is beautiful.Somany things happen when we linger with people we love: agendas and schedules fall by the wayside, we step off the hamster wheel and enjoy the gift of the moment, we see and are seen, we are fully present and we remember what is really important. And it is only with lingering, being together in unhurried spaces, that we are filled with the sense of belonging, of being rooted and deeply connected with one another that we as human beings need to thrive. So in this demanding, fastpaced world where busyness is some kind of sadistic badge of honour, give yourself permission to linger: in that early morning snuggle with your spouse, over that cup of tea with a friend, in that Lego building with your child. The importance of dishes and emails pale in significance, because people are always the prize. We will make time for the urgent things in life, but these important moments can easily slipDon’tmy. let them. Grab hold of them. Linger. Breathe them in and let them remind you that you are loved. *

The benefits of exercise are numerous.
Exercise decreases stress, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue and many other mental health conditions. on toning your body and losing weight, numerous studies confirm that regular exercise can have an astounding effect on one’s health in general. Did you know that the risk of developing breast cancer – and breast cancer relapsing – is decreased by 50% if you do moderate exercise for 30 minutes a day, five times a week? That’s a small price to pay for a healthier body and life, so if necessary check with your doctor or physio what exercises are suitable for you.
Spring has sprung – and as we say goodbye to winter woollies, many of us can’t wait to embrace the warmer months. There’s only one drawback: most of us want to lose a few winter kilos and tone up our bodies. And with October being Mental Health Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, now is the time to adopt a better eating plan combined with an exercise regime. The good news is that other than the effect exercise has

However, without a training programme and plan, we are less likely to reach ourTogoals.getyou started towards losing some weight and toning up winter flab, here are my five tried and trusted guidelines:
5. DON’T SEPARATE EXERCISE FROM HEALTHY SELF-TALK AND EATING. Your belief system and diet play an extremely important role in your health and fitness journey. For success, one needs to “Believe” (think right), “Move” (exercise right) and “Nourish” (eat right). An important point that I stand by. *
FOR MORE INFO Find out more about my online workouts, which are formulated to meet the above guidelines, as well as my 12-week fitness and lifestyle spring challenge which includes workout, eating plan and more. Go to www.christyann.fit
1. MAKE A COMMITMENT. Get yourself an accountability partner or join an exercise group. It’s harder to skip a day if you have someone waiting for you.
4. CHOOSE EXERCISE FOR YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE AND HAVE FUN. You need to choose the form of exercise you most enjoy. Some people don’t enjoy exercise in general, but choosing their preferred type of exercise is more sustainable in the long run. Whether it be outdoors, body weight exercise at home, with or without equipment, at gym or part of an exercise class, make sure your heart rate increases for at least 30 minutes five days a week.
3. SET ATTAINABLE GOALS FOR YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. As a guideline for your goals, you are encouraged to do moderately-intense exercise for at least 30 minutes a day for five or more days a week – just make sure your exercise adds up to 150 minutes a week (according to the World Health Organization). Moderate exercise means you are able to talk while exercising, but you’re too out-of-breath to sing. It is good to start at a low-to-moderate intensity, and then build up over time. Strength training is also important to work into your sessions.
2. DIARISE YOUR SESSIONS AND SET AN ALARM. When other things come up (which might be more fun), you are tempted to delete the entry. However, if it’s “booked” into your daily schedule, there’s less temptation. By deleting your entry, you are literally deleting “health” out of your diary.

A SLUG IN YOUR SANDWICH
Thanks to TikTok, “Slugging” is the skin care trend going viral. Slugging is the act of lathering a heavy-duty occlusive, such as Vaseline or a petrolatum-based product, to your skin as the last step in your evening regime. It is aimed at locking in moisture and any other ingredients you have applied, to prevent loss of moisture to the skin barrier, enabling your skin to repair itself.Be warned, slugging isn’t for everyone and can result in break-outs if you have oily or sensitive skin. The “Moisture Sandwich” is another trending term – the Korean technique of applying products while your skin is still damp in order for the ingredients to sink in, be absorbed and trap moisture for the ultimate hydration.

“You like to lie there and moan just loud enough so that I can hear you from the other room. I’m going to call your mother, she can look after you.” This was an outrageous slur upon my character. I’m a grown man. I didn’t need my mother. “Don’t call my mother!” I yelled. “I’m calling your mother!”
“Well, they’re not as funny as they used to be. Jughead isn’t the same.”

“Oooh! Yummy. Chocolate milk! That’s a good treat!” I don’t need my mother when I get sick, I thought as I lay there that afternoon, turning the pages of the Archie comics, with the curtains drawn and all the clamour of the world far away and being worried about by grown-ups who aren’t me. But sometimes it’s nice to be 12 years old again. *
“I found these old Archie comics in the garage,” said my mother, as she came in that afternoon. “And I brought you some chocolate milk.”
“My throat’s a bit sore,” I said to my partner. She didn’t reply, but I sensed overwhelmingthe silence of someone saying quite a lot inside her“Dohead.Ilook a bit flushed to you?” I asked. “Do I feel hot? Here, feel my forehead. Go on, feel my forehead.” “I don’t want to feel your forehead,” she“Itsaid.almost feels like I’m getting sick,” I said. “But I can’t be getting sick because …” “But you can’t be getting sick because you never get sick,” she said at the same time asIme.eyed her coldly. “Are you suggesting I say this a lot?”
“I am the man of the house and I forbid you to call my mother!”
“You did find me Archie comics last time,” I reminded her. “And then you complained about them.”
“The Corenza is in the medicine cabinet and there are some Archie comics in the second drawer of the dressing table,” she said. “Leave me out of this.”
THERE’S SOMETHING RESPONSIBLE ABOUT BEING A GROWN-UP … BUT THEN SOMETIMES IT WOULD BE NICE TO BE YOUNG AGAIN, SAYS DARREL BRISTOWBOVEY, AS HE PAGES THROUGH AN ARCHIE COMIC

Now, you may be deducing from this exchange that my partner is a coldhearted individual, a bad nurse without an ounce of compassion for one she has dishonestly sworn to care for in sickness and in health, but especially in sickness. I’m not encouraging you to think this, but it is certainly something I muttered under my“Don’tbreath.give me that,” she snapped. “I wouldn’t mind looking after you if you would just lie there and be sick, but I’m tired of going through the same rigmarole every“Whattime.”rigmarole?”
“You pretend you don’t like being sick, but actually I think being sick is your favourite time of year.” “I don’t like being sick,” I told her. “I like being strong and independent.”
I protested, coughing piteously, hoping for some attention. “First, you’ll spend a day saying how you never get sick, and I’ll have to persuade you that you are in fact getting sick and that you have to stay in bed while I bring you food and medicine. Then finally, with an air of doing me a favour, you will agree to lie down and be waited upon. Then you’ll start wistfully telling me stories about how when you were sick when you were young, your mother would bring you special treats and Archie comics, and then I’ll say I don’t know where to find Archie comics because it’s not the early 80s, and then you’ll nod feebly and say it’s fine, you understand, but you’ll say it in such a way that implies that if I really cared about you – the way your mother did – I would know where to find Archie comics.”
