Our changing lives

ho would have thought as we entered 2020 that three months later our world would have been turned upside down by something we can’t see, and that only one topic dominated our lives. The pandemic that has been moving across the world has certainly put all resources to the test. Healthcare systems have been under enormous pressure, the economy is wobbling, politicians and leaders are strategising 24/7 to combat this virus and protect their people, and the average person has adapted to the situation on a daily basis. There’s no doubt about it,

In around 2020 a severe pneumonialike illness will spread throughout the globe, attacking the lungs and the bronchial tubes and resisting all known treatments. Almost more baffling than the illness itself will be the fact that it will suddenly vanish as quickly as it arrived, attack again ten years later, and then disappear completely. – from End of Days by Sylvia Brown

living in lockdown has put a whole new perspective on life – but it has been necessary to deal with an “invisible” enemy. On the surface there seems to be plenty of negativity around, but listen more closely and there are many positive ideas starting to take shape. Many of us have become complacent, lazy thinkers. But overnight we have been forced out of our comfort zones to think out the box, to come up with solutions to problems. Positive vibes abound, and in a time of adversity, it’s this positivity that will keep us, as a nation and as a tight-knit community, glued together. Now is the time to relook our lifestyles. As a community we have lots to offer and we should be proud to support local. Armitage Outfitters’ top quality, bespoke men’s clothing is on a par with clothes abroad (page 20); and Daniele Di Mauro's Italian inspired leather women’s shoes (page 40) are divine. Why go overseas when we have some of the best on our doorstep? Online shopping is not new to us – look out for Sarah Swainson's online bra service (page 22); Just Peachy Cakes offer the perfect celebratory cakes (page 12) delivered to your home; and our weekend escape to Tandweni is all about self-catering luxury in the bush (page 50). The Ridge community magazine is all about our community. This is our time to step up and extend acts of kindness to those in need, to help uplift one another when

times are tough, and to let our national pride shine through. By the time you read this issue, our lives might have adapted even more – schools could be gearing up to embrace a digital learning experience; shopping malls could have devised a way of “mall shopping”; there could be fewer vehicles on the road, and our air could be cleaner. For the time being, life as we knew it might be a thing of the past. But as South Africans we are a resilient bunch, and this virus will not beat us. We have faced numerous challenges in the past, but have conquered and survived, coming out stronger. Until next time, stay safe and be responsible.

KEEPING YOU IN THE LOOP Liquorice And Chocolate Be warned, you haven’t lived until you’ve tasted Lakrids by Bülow. And once you’ve tasted it, you certainly won’t want to share it. Perfected by Johan Bülow in Denmark – who’s original idea was to coat liquorice with chocolate – his vision was to spread the love for liquorice around the globe. Not only the sweet or salty one, but a spectrum of flavours using liquorice as a spice. Lakrids A was the first product developed, and is a combination of sweet liquorice, exclusive milk chocolate and fine liquorice powder. Instantly addictive. Today there’s a wide range of flavours: Strawberry & Cream, Blackberry & Dark, Salt & Pepper, Raspberry, the list goes on. The best ever? Salt & Caramel – an irresistible winning combination of salted caramel and sweet liquorice. Lakrids D is a sweet liquorice covered in caramelised dulce chocolate and flavoured with crunchy flakes of sea salt. Feisty and gentle at the same time. You simply can’t have just one. Lakrids by Bülow will make the perfect gift for that special someone in your life, 295g for R320.

The Harvest Table When Catherine Clark was 20, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “It made me reassess the way I lived my life, and also gave me the opportunity to assess my diet – wanting to rebuild a healthier and stronger version of myself,” says Catherine. Years of research into what her family should be eating led Catherine to look for products she could easily incorporate into a healthy lifestyle. “I am a busy working mom, so I needed solutions that were both nutritious and quick and easy to use.” Catherine came across bone broth, but found that making her own was time-consuming. “I also didn’t favour including meat in my family’s diet, but I knew that we needed good, clean and easy to digest proteins to reach our optimum health. This led me to search for a powdered form – which literally began the journey of The Harvest Table. “I blended the beautiful ingredients we found to create nutritionally dense shake powders. And the more I gathered products and created blends, the more ideas I had in terms of what I wanted to add to the range.” Our busy lives have led to food preparation being about simplicity and speed. “This means we have lost out on some of the depth of nutrition that our ancestors got from things such as bone broth.” Adding The Harvest Table’s collagen granules into your daily smoothie, tea or coffee, and bone broth powder into your pasta sauce, is all it takes! T

SO MANY INTRIGUING MYTHS AND LEGENDS SURROUND THE AFRICAN BAOBAB TREE, BUT ON HERRWOOD DRIVE, IT’S MORE ABOUT SCULPTURE, ART AND A POINT OF ARRIVAL, THAN FICTION AND FABLE, WRITES ANNE SCHAUFFER

he Bushmen believe the baobab tree aggravated the gods, and when thrown out of heaven, it landed upside down. Africa is full of colourful stories about this iconic tree, and no matter how many times one looks at a baobab, it’s always intriguing. There’s something about them that goes beyond their looks, to their history and longevity … often over 2 000 years old. The most recent of Africa’s baobabs however, is younger and right here in uMhlanga. Travel along Herrwood Drive, past the KZN Sharks Board towards Izinga Estate, and there, imposing, towering, undoubtedly surprising, is a vast baobab sculpture dominating the landscape. It’s magnificent, a landmark designed and created by the team at Uys & White Landscape Architects – Lucas Uys, Bianca Heath and Ignes de Beer. It wasn’t simple. Creating a commanding sense of arrival at Izinga was complicated by the concrete storm water retention dam which lies beneath the circle. It was about marrying two concepts: a reference point of arrival, and the road landscape link to Izinga. “We, as Africans, relate well to the African tradition of a tree as a point of arrival,” says Lucas. “It’s where the community waits to be

announced to the N’kosi. It’s the point where you pause, take a decision, then move towards your goal. At Izinga, it’s likewise – the moment you decide to enter.” Lucas found the “model” for the baobab sculpture on a visit to Rato, a farm bordering the Limpopo River. He was completely taken by the characteristics of what he describes as, “these giant living sculptures, their rough markings over time reflecting weather and animal onslaught.” The key challenge in designing the tree was to position flat boxes in radial order to give the perception of a round stem or three-dimensional quality. “We decided on ‘less is more’,” says Lucas. “We wanted it to be stylised rather than realistic, so kept it unpolished and slightly rough, so it can age … which adds to the character. We made metal boxes, and welded them together – they were massive.” Earl Moller and Tim Wilford from EFM Engineering manufactured the baobab. Eight metres tall, it’s fabricated from Aluminium (AL-Mg) Wrought Alloy, and weighs in the region of two tons. The Uys & White team designed tapering, shaped pieces to give emphasis to the base of the stem, which is its outstanding characteristic. An additional unplanned bonus are the figures which

emerge from the positive and negative spaces in-between the base of stems. Making it was one thing, erecting it quite another – like a massive Meccano set, separate elements welded together. In construction, the time-consuming element was that each stem has two sides with a tapering closing edge bent to follow the stem’s profile. Weeks turned into months of many welders making the “boxes”. They were then welded together in sizes to fit road restrictions and, thereafter, welded on site into separate branches. Lucas explained the site preparation: “After roadworks were completed, and the water retention dam was constructed below surface,

Making it was one thing, erecting it quite another – like a massive Meccano set, separate elements welded together NOTE: Uys & White Landscape Architects KZN are locally and internationally involved in many prestigious projects, such as the newly completed temple in Izinga, the new Heleza Boulevard, developments in Sibaya, as well as the north coast estate of Elaleni.

the area was flat. We raised the centre of the island with a metal stand, and covered it with soil to visually add to the size and impact of the sculpture.” Baobabs are considered the – or one of the – most water-wise plants on the planet, storing up to 75% water in their trunks. At a time where water is a critical resource in Africa, the symbolism of this isn’t lost. Aside from its water-wise properties, the baobab is considered the tree of life for many different species – including our own – and standing tall, there, at the entrance to Izinga, it’s appropriate to pause in awe. To feel that sense of place, that point of arrival.

ollagen has been around in cosmetics for a while, but is a relatively new kid on the block when it comes to supplements. Its benefits certainly sound intriguing, but is it just another health fad? Let’s find out why you should be taking it, and how you can ensure you’re taking the best possible product. “Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body. It is found in our bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. It’s the glue that holds the body together, and forms a foundation to provide strength and structure,” explains registered dietician Danielle Roberts – the Sharks rugby team’s nutritionist. Strengthening the skin by improving elasticity and hydration, collagen can keep us looking younger by slowing down the aging process. It may also help improve joint pain and maintain bone mass. “Bones are mostly made of collagen, which give them structure,” explains Danielle. “As we age, we lose bone mass density. Taking collagen can help increase bone density and prevent bone disorders like osteoporosis.” Collagen may also help gut health issues by strengthening the lining of the gut – making it less permeable and more effective in retaining nutrients from food – and improving gut absorption issues. This, however, needs more scientific research. “Most of the research done has been on joint and skin health, showing beneficial effects,” says Danielle. “Although larger studies are needed, I have many older clients who on taking the right collagen can feel the difference in their skin, hair growth and nails in just one to two months.” When combined with exercise, collagen may

also boost metabolism by increasing lean muscle mass. “Due to the high amino acid content, it makes it an ideal protein for muscle repair and recovery – reducing stiffness,” explains Mariska Terblanche of Skat. “Apart from preventing the signs of aging by hydrating the skin and reducing wrinkles, it can also promote nail and hair growth,” she adds. Our ancestors ate animals from head to tail, ensuring there was no waste. This included boiling down the bones and ligaments, or the animal, to make a rich broth that formed the

basis of most of their meals. “Collagen is found mostly in the parts of the animal that we discard in modern-day cooking, so we just don’t get enough of it in our diets,” explains Catherine Clark – owner of The Harvest Table – adding that collagen is “more than just a supplement, it is a necessity for optimum health. “Because good collagen supplements – which are additive, filler and preservative free – are actually a food, there are very few, if any, side effects,” says Catherine. However according to Danielle collagen supplements may cause indigestion for some people, or a feeling of fullness – as it is a protein. You can take collagen in the form of pills, capsules, powder, granules or even liquid. “In order to receive enough collagen for your body to do the repair work that it needs, you should be taking approximately 16g a day,” says Catherine. “As collagen can be heated without losing its effectiveness, you can easily add it into cooking and hot drinks.” It also works well in smoothies, and according to Mariska you can bake with it without compromising your recipe. Some people suggest taking collagen in the morning when your stomach is empty, while others prefer taking it at night – so the body can “process” it while you sleep. “For me, I take collagen powder in the morning after I train, as it adds 10g of protein to my post workout meal,” says Danielle. With so many collagen supplements available, make sure you do your research. A good collagen supplement will be 100% pure, natural and unsweetened. “Colourless and tasteless means there are no other ingredients

added,” says Mariska. Always look for a product that comes from a grass fed (bovine) source or wild caught (marine) source. “This ensures that the animals were raised as nature intended, and not prematurely fattened. Also ensure that the animals were given no routine antibiotics or growth hormones – as you wouldn’t wanted traces of those in your collagen,” says Catherine. “Collagen needs to be broken down into peptides to be absorbed into the body, so look out for a hydrolysed collagen supplement,” says Danielle – adding that it’s absorbed better with vitamin C. Veganism is the fastest growing sector in the food industry today, so researchers are feeling the pressure to come up with a plant-based alternative to collagen supplements. Protein is made up of building blocks called amino acids, and different types of protein – whether it is egg, pea or bovine – all contain a different mix of amino acids. “Collagen protein has a unique set of amino acids found only within the skin and tissue of animals. These amino acid combinations do not naturally occur in plants. We can offer a mix of plant-based proteins to try and give the best possible second alternative to animal-based collagen, but it is not proven to be as effective. This is a hot topic and we should watch this space closely as new research becomes available,” says Mariska. “Aloe vera, bamboo and seaweed may have collagen boosting materials, as well as certain mushrooms which provide the amino acids to make certain proteins,” adds Danielle. To boost your collagen naturally, drinking bone broth or adding bone broth powder when cooking are great options. “Cooking foods, like stews, with the bones in, also increases collagen,” says Catherine – who believes consumers will see greater long-term benefits by consuming collagen and allowing their bodies to repair from within.

OFFERING A PRIME LOCATION, WAREHOUSING AND OFFICE SPACE, DUBE TRADEPORT LAUNCHES MINI FACTORIES FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZE BUSINESSES

D

ube TradePort’s unique offering has received added sparkle with the recent release of 18 mini factories to let in a R90-million complex that will give small to mediumsize businesses unmatched access. The complex is in Dube TradePort’s Special Economic Zone and comes with associated tax incentives for qualifying entities. The mini factories, each 249m² in size, offer tenants a unique opportunity to operate within a Special Economic Zone, and provide a platform for SMME’s looking for small manufacturing and office space. The units are 500m from the airport’s Cargo Terminal and have easy access to two of Africa’s busiest ports, Durban and Richards Bay. The major routes from north to south: N2, M4 and R102, easily connect with transport corridors and an array of blue-chip companies.

BENEFITS

The units are 500m from the airport’s Cargo Terminal and have easy access to two of Africa’s busiest ports Each of the 18 units comprises a warehouse of 168m², plus kitchen, reception, storeroom, toilets and mezzanine floor. There are dedicated loading/delivery bays and five parkings per unit. In addition, premium security is on offer – which is a boon for existing tenants at DTPC. Firms like Mara (Africa’s first cellphone manufacturer), Retractaline and Conlog are among some of the sizeable neighbours situated at DTPC. Conlog CEO, Logan Moodley said his firm chose to relocate to DTPC based

on “the attractive incentives available within the Special Economic Zone” and within a Controlled Customs Area precinct. Conlog, an electronics manufacturing company, has invested R110-million in a smart electricity meter manufacturing plant. The 12 000m² development is within the now fully-subscribed Dube TradeZone 1, close to the mini factories. Conlog’s outlay in DTPC is part of a successful investment drive in KZN that has also seen Mahindra launch a new semi-knockdown assembly plant there. The facility will produce Mahindra’s Pik-Up range of bakkies, and once the plant is operating at full capacity it will be able to produce 4 000 vehicles a year. A range of high tech neighbours like Conlog, Mahindra, Mara and others is a clear advantage for tenants at the mini factories who want to operate in a fully serviced world-class business precinct.

PASSION, PERSEVERANCE, PROFESSIONALISM AND PANACHE – FOUR TRAITS THAT DEFINE AESTHETICS EXPERT DR PARUSHINEE NAIDOO

T

astefully decorated in hues of blue and gold, Dr Parushinee Naidoo’s aesthetic practice – Skin Solutions – resonates elegance and professionalism. After studying medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, Dr Naidoo combined her passion for travelling with her profession and worked in the UK, where her love for aesthetics

was ignited. “I worked closely with a plastic surgeon in the UK, and at the time, 17 years ago, aesthetics was still a very new field. He introduced me to different aesthetic procedures and gave me hands-on training. I also learnt to appreciate the artistry in the human face and how to always respect it,” she recalls. Dr Naidoo returned to SA in 2005 and decided to expand her expertise in aesthetics with formal training in Fillers and Botox and other aesthetic modalities. In time she acquired an Intraceutical Oxygen machine – the first in KZN – and Skin Solutions was born. Today, with a burgeoning client base and a yearning to expand her services, Dr Naidoo moved to uMhlanga, where Skin Solutions is now one of the premier aesthetic medical practices. Dr Naidoo and her team ensure their patients receive the best and safest procedures as well as a comfortable environment to achieve their skin goals. As every patient is different, Dr Naidoo formulates a personalised treatment plan and aims to align the patient’s results with safe, evidence-based treatment and product options. “My focus is on making people feel comfortable in their own skin using a combination of my medical expertise, an innate love for healing, and utilising the best possible products. I have rapidly

expanded my treatment offerings to focus on anti-aging, pigmentation and acne, in addition to derma-planing, micro needling or injectable aesthetics.” Skin Solutions also offer Hydro-facial treatments, and is the flagship aesthetic practice in KZN for the widely acclaimed Biomedical Emporium skincare range. Dr Naidoo is personally involved in her patient’s care. “It’s important for me to have a connection with my patients. I practice a very clinical form of aesthetics and adhere to a strong ethical code and strive to excel at service delivery.” The aesthetic industry is growing fast, but in 2020, Skin Solutions continue their trend of merging innovation with results. aint strains of Coltrane, a hint of a fragrance, and a slight aroma of good coffee – that sense of pressing pause as you step over the threshold, and exhale. Melodramatic? No. Armitage is the antithesis of melodrama. Neville Armitage created this distinctly masculine retail and experiential space with measured, deliberate intent, and all the niches, players and merchandise within that space, are party to that vision. From the muted jazzy playlist to the calming sense of order, Armitage’s is a wonderful story of Africa meets the world. International brands rub shoulders with local, and a single thread runs through everything – quality. For as long as Neville can remember, he’s been concerned about over-consumption, the rate at which people dispose of things. For him, that translated into buying less, but always quality. And furthermore, he says, “You can’t bargain things right down if you think about the source. Buy fewer things, things that will last …” Neville’s relationship with merchandise began at his after-school job, with the seemingly unglamorous role of opening boxes of apparel. But what he clearly recalls, is anticipation of the next box’s contents, and curiosity as to the person who’d chosen these items. He spent three years at Durban University of Technology studying

Clothing Production, and followed it up with an Honours Degree in Bachelor of Commerce. Why commerce? Strangely, he’d always loved accounting over anything else. Still does. In the industry, he was viewed as something of an anomaly – someone who could sit behind an industrial sewing machine making a full tailored suit, but who would far rather choose to spend an afternoon with spreadsheets and numbers. From years in clothing factories, to many more as a buyer of menswear, homeware and finally furniture, Neville travelled extensively to London, New York, you name it. He had a very clear sense of what his market wanted … but all the while, kept one firm eye on the numbers. He was highly successful. He laughingly admits to being a control freak: “I’ve always known from a youngster, that I was fully in control of things.” Which, in this arena, is undoubtedly an attribute: “I was very, very neat with a ruler and pencil and measurements down to the millimetre.” From making covered buttons, to the stitch count, quality of a garment and putting in a zip, his knowledge of every aspect of a garment and the marks of true quality, has stood him in great stead for his own brand. For Neville, this space is not only the realisation of a long-held dream, it’s the sum of so many parts … the best of the best that he’s teased out of all corners of the globe. He’s hand-picked the elements, and curated them so enticingly, it’s impossible to walk on by. Thing is, Neville spent most of his career in and around the world of buying, but always for others. Now, the absolute joy for him at Armitage is that he selects and designs everything for himself. He is his clientele. Those who step into Armitage are, in a sense, reflections of Neville. They love what he loves. But it’s not just quality of merchandise, it’s

the people, too. Neville invests in his team. He didn’t simply want an extraordinary retail store, he wanted to provide an experience and a convenience. He’s surrounded himself with the finest craftsmen. Drop off your dry cleaning – as so many do – Mr Draycott will sort it. He’s a master drycleaner with 50 years of experience. Need tailoring? Meet Armitage’s on-site tailor. Neville shakes his head, “He’s a brilliant craftsman. I’ve only ever seen tailoring like that on my international travels.” You’ll find two barbers here. They’re craftsmen Neville would choose for himself: “Gentle, no fuss, just the right spirit comes through. No matter how busy, everyone gets the time and attention they need.” Very important to Neville, is training up unemployed youth: “Sbonelo was a housekeeper. I trained him on the leather care. He learnt fast, then I asked what he wanted to do – tailoring or barbering? Within three months, Sbonelo had mastered barbering skills. We use a straight blade here, so it’s not simple. Now he has a skill he can take anywhere.” High up on the double volume wall as you enter Armitage Outfitters, are two framed photographs of Africanis dogs by Daniel Naude. They’re exquisite, but more than that, they’re the embodiment of the Armitage brand. The logo. Their iconic African-ness is an integral part of what Neville is constantly striving for. The store has a strong sense of the best of Africa, right down to his house brand, Armitage – overseas fabrics, but locally manufactured. Wherever possible, Africa is the first source, but alongside local, is a premium range of international brands cherry picked by Neville. As he says, “So many heritage brands with great stories.” Armitage is truly an African story which Neville Armitage is telling so well.

I asked Sarah how it was possible to buy a perfectly fitting bra online: “On the website there is a Valuation Form to fill in, carefully and truthfully. We assess the form which gives us an indication of the problem areas and then send the customer two or three bras, in different styles, to try. This type of customer service tends to build relationships with our clients who soon become return customers and friends.” With her online business ticking over, Sarah decided, in 2018, to venture into retail and has managed, with the help of her fitting assistant wizard, Rozelle de Lange, to successfully and seamlessly marry the two concepts, which work in tandem. Five Tips To Comfortable Confidence Ensure the band sits comfortably and snug, stabilising the breasts. Cup size should be big enough to contain all the breast tissue. Straps should not be taking the weight and should be comfy and not too tight. If you need to continually tighten the straps, other aspects of the garment aren’t right. Choose a style that suits your breast shape and lifestyle. Remember, your shape changes with age. When trying bras on jump up and down, run on the spot – if the garment moves around it’s not right for you.

It should fit horizontally and snugly around the back and not creep up. Straps shouldn’t be tight and the cups should ‘scoop’ the sides of your boobs together.” With her full range of ladies underwear imported from the UK, Germany, America and Spain, Sarah is confident she can help all women find new comfort. As she says, “You may be wearing the right size but the wrong style for your shape. Our job is to find the sweet spot which offers the most comfort but still leaves you feeling sexy.”

Meet aunty

SHAMILLA

A

PREVEN REDDY, THE CREATOR OF AUNTY SHAMILLA, CHATS TO CANDICE MEIRING-BASNETT ABOUT HIS JOURNEY

unty Shamilla has taken the internet by storm. She’s a fearless, straight talking, Indian-aunty from Durban who takes no rubbish. She’s been nominated for a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award, bagged sold out shows across the country, and was too busy at her day job to chat so instead sent her genius creator Preven Reddy to talk nonsense with us. Prev reassured us not to take it personally: “She doesn’t care about all the fuss.” Preven is a young, bright-eyed and determined comedian who studied writing and producing at AFDA. His parents wanted him to study law, but, “I conned them into letting me go by convincing them that learning to manage contracts and create content is basically like getting a business degree,” he explains. After completing his studies he headed to Johannesburg and worked as an adjudicator and a PA on film and TV sets while pursuing his dream of making it big. He knocked on the doors of comedy clubs to give him a slot. He auditioned for acting parts and was constantly rejected. Talk show host, life coach and free therapist for most millennials, Oprah preaches that success happens when preparation meets opportunity. Preven Reddy’s story is true testament to these words. Then one fine day while Preven was a driver for Mark Banks and they were discussing the Durban boys comedic dreams while fighting Johannesburg traffic, Mark made a phone call to the owner of the famous Parker’s Comedy Club and sealed him 15 minutes on stage that night. Thankfully the ambitious Prev had material ready and finally got his foot in the door. At just 24 he has hustled hard to achieve his goals – goals he writes on a vision board each year. “I’ve managed to tick off 99% of

those milestones, four years in a row,” although his weight loss targets still creep in year after year. Last year he nailed a TV show appearance on Imbewu, and this year a part in a Leon Schuster film to be released in June. Preven’s most famous character Aunty Shamilla hit the VMA’s (Video Music Awards) in New York and Comicon in Johannesburg last year. The realisation of how popular Aunty Shamilla was became real when she needed security to move around the event. The down-to-earth comedian says that when he’s not in his Aunty Shamilla attire, no one even notices him. He’s a nobody with no security. However, the no-nonsense Aunty received invites from Nickelodeon and Comedy Central to attend their stands – which set the ball rolling for the award nomination this year. Aunty Shamilla wasn’t supposed to happen. Preven had a steady number of followers on his social media where he mostly stuck to traditional stand up “and I basically just ranted as myself,” he says. He then posted a short skit of Aunty Shamilla with no masterplan, but received such a great response from his fans that Aunty Shamilla eventually took centre stage. She is 99% based on his own mother and says that his fan base crosses the barrier of racial and age divides because the theme and content she brings to life are universal. Amidst the Coronavirus drama Preven was set to head to the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in March, but the event has been postponed until later this year. “I’m up against a DJ with 4,9-million followers who Naomi Campbell sent well wishes to, so I doubt I’m going to bring the award home but I don’t care, just being invited is a win.”

BUSINESS

C

AS THE BUSINESS DIRECTOR FOR H&G EXPO, ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S LARGEST EXHIBITION COMPANIES, GLENASHLEY’S CAIREY BAXTER-BRUCE IS PLUGGED INTO THE LATEST HOUSE AND GARDEN TRENDS, WRITES CANDICE BOTHA

airey Baxter-Bruce’s job as business director for H&G Expos involves developing new ventures and overall growth for the company, which manages many events countrywide each year, as well as heading up the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show and Beauty Revolution, a festival celebrating inclusivity and Africa’s diversity within the beauty industry. “I love the fact that I am able to get involved in all aspects of the business and get to re-invent, innovate and grow exhibitions year on year,” she says. Cairey (below) and her team keep tabs on trends to ensure the shows they plan wow visitors and keep them coming back for fresh ideas and inspiration. “For the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show, we consider core elements of modern life – personal, social, environmental, economic and also those unique to the region – as guiding principles to shape what we include in the show,” she says, adding that the influence of a growing preference for experiences over things has prompted the team to plan customised features which include interactive demonstrations, shopping and food experiences, and local design installations. “Self-expression on digital platforms is leading the way and breaking the moulds of traditional trends which have always been set by large corporates and retail brands. This is creating a refreshing uniqueness in interior and lifestyle perspectives at the moment,” Cairey says. “It’s important to remember that while being ‘on-trend’ can bring a lot of gratification, individual style is at the heart of making a home for years to come. Personal style, online influence and best practices like sustainability will soon be widely followed over trends,” she explains. This is a philosophy Cairey lives by, and the home she shares with her husband, son and

28

daughter strikes a balance between style and practicality. “Being a parent does not mean you have to give up on decor, and wanting a beautiful home does not mean you can’t have children! Parenting doesn’t leave too much time for styling, though, so I’ve tried to combine key classic pieces with accessories adding style. This means I can easily change the look without a complete redesign or spending too much.” For this year, Cairey says the influence of nature is everywhere. “Lifestyle trends are still very much about aligning the home with nature,

Neutrals and greys are also trending which add sophistication when paired with Classic Blue, Pantone’s Colour of the Year

KEY TRENDS FOR 2020 ACCORDING TO SOME DURBAN DESIGNERS, HERE ARE DECOR TRENDS TO LOOK OUT FOR. ■ Mix and match patterns and textures to create an eclectic, layered space. Think patterned fabrics and wallpapers in bold colours and touch-me textures like velvet, leather and silk. – Sam Oakley of Sam O Interiors ■ Natural textures are still making a big statement. A sisal, jute or seagrass rug is a simple, effective way to bring this trend into any space. Available in round, square, patterned or plain, they are versatile and work in classic or contemporary schemes. – Kita Veale of Homestead Decor ■ I’m excited about the new Pantone Colour of the Year for 2020, Classic Blue. Instilling calm, confidence and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build. Textile art is also a growing trend – it’s a soft and cosy element that makes an interior feel welcoming. Macrame wall hangings and heavily detailed, stitched and embroidered scatters really can elevate your interiors and add wonderful texture. – Amy Mitchell of Studio Mitchell

not in the Afrofutura and Botanical styles we’ve seen in recent years, but rather through the use of recycled decor and eco-friendly materials. Natural pigments, neutrals and greys are also trending which add sophistication when paired with Classic Blue, Pantone’s Colour of the Year. It’s a look that reflects the colours of the sandy shore, the sea and the harbour – all ideal for Durban.” Blurring the boundaries between inside and out is also a key trend, and Cairey notes that plants which can be used in cooking and as garnishes for drinks are popular. “Local gardening is also moving

towards being eco-friendly – reducing your carbon footprint through composting, repurposing old fittings, upkeep of indigenous pollinators and pest controllers, and dual-purpose planting are just a few of the on-trend options.”

The Seaton Manor House dates back to the 1840s, with local North Coast families having many interesting stories that thread pieces of this house’s history together. “I grew up at The Grange house, which was adjoined to what is now the Seaton Manor House. As a child in the 1940s and early 50s, I always remember the house as spectacular and ornate, filled with statues and carvings. The beautifully maintained gardens were overseen by an elderly gentleman named Mr King who smoked a pipe incessantly. The vast surrounding grounds were wonderful for exploring and the many pigsties a major attraction!” says Julie Parnell, Gifford family representative. From 1970 to 1973 the Seaton Manor House was once owned by the Louw family and fondly known as the flagstaff house; as a flag was hung from a pole on the highest point of the farm to act as a beacon for ships. Between 1974 and 1996, the farm and house were owned by the de Charmoy family. Cyril de Charmoy, along with his three siblings, managed and owned the house and farmstead, until Cyril took full ownership and left it to his children when he passed away in 1987. The home was a fusion of Eastern and Dutch architecture, and instead of tearing it down and constructing a house that illustrated one style, Cyril chose to renovate it with top quality finishes from wooden floors,

The Seaton Manor House now reminds me so much of how my dad had renovated this home,” shares Janine Mallandain, the de Charmoy family representative. Catherine Oliver of Wylder Jane Designs and Brent Buchanan from Nsika Architects, masterfully brought the house back to life. “I love old buildings, they have such a unique character. When you walk in you have this sense of home and life. This project added another dimension as I couldn’t just bring through shiny, new objects or have new furniture made with any material. windows and their shapes,” explains Catherine. “For the featured decor items in the house, I searched antique stores and second-hand thrift shops and found absolute treasures. I managed to find an old oak housekeeper’s cabinet, early 20th century dressage hats originally crafted in England, along with riding helmets that had been collected from a variety of places. We also have old brass features and all-wood finds that you simply can’t find just anywhere. The furniture that was made new by craftsmen used natural elements to ensure the pieces stood the test of time. The treasures truly accentuated the homely feel and created an authentic equestrian feel for The Club.” The first phase of Seaton – a R10-billion development – is The Club, which has been specially crafted for passionate equestrians, and comprises 98 stands ranging from 900m² to 9 000m², as well as 96 stables where residents can house their horses.

Woman of many

M

y research is not philosophical, its relevant. It’s real stuff,” says sociologist and anthropologist, Dr Sheetal Bhoola, who, charismatic and passionate, goes by many titles – including academic, radio presenter, master of ceremonies, mother and wife. Her recent nomination as a finalist for the sixth Woman of Stature Awards in Education crystallised all this in what she describes as a humbling and beautiful experience. At the awards ceremony on March 8, she realised that she was actually one of the youngest nominees amongst some stellar women who have made massive contributions to their country. This has inspired her to do even more, including attain her full professorship within the next five years. Raised in Port Elizabeth, Dr Bhoola arrived in Durban at the age of 19. “Both my parents were entrepreneurs and were hardworking, so as I young child, I was taught the value of perseverance, dedication and commitment,” she explains. This was a perfect fit with the world of academia and she began tutoring within the Department of Sociology as a young student. But her real introduction to what was to become her future career came when she was awarded a scholarship to do her master’s degree by three universities

In 2006 she began lecturing at UKZN as well as doing research. Projects produced at that time included the environmental assessment impact report for the Dube TradePort and King Shaka International Airport. Her PhD followed in 2015. But this came with massive challenges, not least of which was having her first son in 2012 just before she was to begin writing her thesis. Little Pranay was premature and remained in hospital for three months. Today he is a healthy sevenyear-old. A second son followed in 2016, but sadly passed away after just nine days. Despite her heartache and a number of health challenges, she nevertheless continued with her academic career, publishing widely in international peer-reviewed journals as well as contributing to several books. Balancing work and family hasn’t been easy, she admits.

She often wakes up at 4am to do her research. Evenings and weekends are for family but, during the week, she remains very focused on building her career. “I have had the honour of being a post-doctoral fellow at UKZN and, recently, I have been recruited by the prestigious Andrew Mellon Foundation as their research fellow on the critical food studies project which is run by the University of Pretoria, the University of Western Cape and UKZN. I recently was also invited to be part of the advisory council of the National Research Foundation Board of Humanities and Social Sciences,” she adds. At the same time, she has enjoyed presenting her research at many local and international conferences as well as sharing her thoughts on the vagaries of human

behaviour on Radio Lotus. Many of these shows are central to her research on the migration of international brides within the Indian diaspora, the local tourism industry and culinary tourism in Durban. In addition to her academic career, Dr Bhoola has also followed in her parents’ entrepreneurial footsteps. “As a young girl, I had the opportunity to present on the AUM programme for SABC which also stimulated my passion for the stage. I pursued being an entrepreneur in 2005 and began an event co-ordination and compèring business known as MadamMC.” Through this, she has shared stages with the likes of the late Ahmed Kathrada, Prince Buthelezi, Pravin Gordhan and other newsmakers. Most of all, Dr Bhoola is a philanthropist at heart and

has worked with a number of non-profit organisations doing everything from coordinating and compèring events to cooking and making sandwiches. “I am a spiritual person and believe in the power of being a good humanitarian. I love entertaining and enjoy connecting with individuals from all walks of life. I also believe in growing and learning from others and that, through varying connections with people, you learn more about yourself. I believe strongly in travelling and challenging myself to engage in different experiences. I’ve hiked in India and gone scuba diving in the great barrier reefs in Australia and learnt to snowboard in Germany.” In her spare time, Dr Bhoola loves baking, cooking, going to the beach, playing chess and reading.

Of course, we have every right to ask our food providers about their awareness of (and contributions to) ensuring we’ll always have plenty of seafood to enjoy in the future. Just the thought of a fresh, salty ocean breeze, sand between my toes and a weekend’s worth of downtime evokes something energetic in me – and of course, it’s directly connected to my appetite. In every culinary language from Spanish to South-east Asian, Mexican to French and beyond, chefs, cooks and even food truck rock stars agree that seafood – when treated with respect and creativity – is the “most valuable player” on their seasonal menus. From bright, zesty ceviches to savoury fish curries, steaming mussel pots or endless other seaside favourites, a key principle behind preparing most of Neptune’s bounty is to keep it light and fresh. National restaurant and take-out franchises serve a purpose, but central kitchens delivering mass-produced tartare sauce by the barrel to a distribution centre should be the exception, rather than the rule. tacos in Brendon’s kitchen – pure Durban summer in every mouthful. Use your choice of deboned white fish fillets, cut into goujons, battered and fried. Serve in hand-size flour tortillas warmed through, with a quick pickle, a generous drizzle of lime and chilli mayonnaise, a classic pico de gallo salsa, and customise with garnishes of fresh coriander, avocado, sour cream and jalapeños. Ice-cold beers with a tangy citrus wedgestuffed neck are mandatory. Fish: Dredge fish in a simple batter of flour seasoned with salt, pepper and cumin, and a dash of baking powder. Mix until smooth with beer or soda water. Coat the fish, shake off the excess and shallow fry until golden and cooked through. Lime and chilli mayonnaise: To half a cup of your go-to mayonnaise, add juice of a half a lime and Tabasco to taste. Mix well. Pickle: Mix together one cup each of shredded cabbage and carrot, add half of that of thinly sliced red onion. Soak in 75ml red wine vinegar, add some peppercorns, a few cumin seeds, and half a teaspoon of sugar and mix. Pico de gallo: Mix together a cup of tomatoes, half a cup of white onion (all finely diced) and plenty of chopped coriander. Add salt and a squeeze of lime juice. Fill and top your tacos the way you like, and smash ’em. Until next time, eat well, tip well and support local. Crank it up!

aniele is of Italian descent, and has always had an eye for fashion. “I was born in South Africa but raised Italian to make sure I never forgot that I was Italian,” he laughs. “Growing up in an Italian home was beautiful, lots of food and family time. I think this played a big role in me getting into the fashion industry.” Daniele’s father was always well groomed and well dressed. “He played a huge role in me wanting to have good clothes, shoes and look good. My uncle Franco was a shoe designer, so he was also a huge inspiration.” Since he was a schoolboy, Daniele had a passion for drawing shoes and clothes. “When the teacher asked the class to each chose something and draw it, I always used to take my shoe off and draw that.” Studying shoe design in Milano in Italy for four years, Daniele received his diploma from the Arsutoria School – a well-known international fashion design school for shoes and bags. “From the time I came back from Italy and thought I was a qualified shoe designer, I realised that this was only the beginning,” says Daniele. “Working as a designer I travelled to many parts of the world, inspirational trips prior to building my collections. On these travels I met many

He told me that I had the potential be a top shoe designer, and gave me so many ideas

and lessons in how to make your brand well known in the market,” says Daniele. “He told me to make shoes and start by giving them away – as this would be easier than trying to sell a brand that no one knew.” So Daniele gave shoes away to friends and family members, and soon he was able to get them to a few well-known African actresses. This helped the brand to gain momentum.

He told me to make shoes and start by giving them away – as this would be easier than trying to sell a brand that no one knew It all started in 2010. “After two years I put the DDM brand on the shelf, working in other areas of the shoe industry for a while. But last year I picked it up again, it felt right to now propel DDM forward,” explains Daniele. His mini-factory is now located in his Hillcrest home. The DDM team is without doubt what makes the DDM brand what it is. “I met the first member of my team, Lwazi Ngidi, when he had

I saw a lot of potential in him, and started teaching him and Lwazi the art of shoe making.” Today they are both partners of the DDM brand. “Both Lwazi and Andile have been working with me for some 10 years now, and we all are driven and have such a great desire to make DDM succeed,” says Daniele. “We all play key roles and have such a great understanding between each other that it’s second nature when building collections. “My favourite element of what I do is that every day is completely new and different, and because I love what I do, it’s as if I don’t work but play.” Daniele’s wife Tracey is also in the fashion industry. “We

KEEPING UP WITH COLOUR TRENDS IN 2020, HERE ARE A FEW WAYS TO INCORPORATE CLASSIC BLUE INTO YOUR HOME AND LIFE

lue has long been acknowledged as the most universally favoured colour, with its varying shades and psychologically linked to creativity, trust, relaxation and serenity. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone. “It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on.” According to Pantone, the colour choice is a reaction to the fast-moving world around us. “As technology continues to race ahead of the human ability to process it all, it is easy to understand why we gravitate to colours that are honest and offer the promise of protection.” Classic Blue is “genderless in outlook and seasonless in endurance” and is “emblematic of heritage but at the same time highly contemporary”. Pantone points to the versatility of the shade, “Classic Blue takes on distinct appearances through application to different

materials, finishes and textures from shimmering metallics, lustrous sheens and high-tech materials.” Inspired by the ocean, blue will take centre stage in 2020. However, browns inspired by dried seaweed and driftwood, sand-like whites and cool green hues will also be seen.

BLISS

AFTER A BUSY DAY, THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN UNWINDING IN A TRANQUIL HAVEN OF A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED BEDROOM. WE ROUNDED UP SOME TIPS FOR SPRUCING UP YOUR SANCTUARY FROM LOCAL INTERIOR DESIGNERS AND DECORATORS story candice botha pictures sally chance

CREATE ZONES Interior designer Amy Mitchell of Studio Mitchell has created a series of zones in this bedroom to allow the owners spaces for sleeping, reading and dressing. “Clearly defining zones for different activities gives the room structure and makes sure it’s a practical space that functions well,” she says. Adding a rug beneath the bed, and a standing lamp over a daybed ensure that these feel like separate areas within the large space.

LET THERE BE LIGHT In a small bedroom, a pair of pendant lights can be a more practical option than bedside table lights. In this compact space, Tarryn Hendra of calla&taia opted for lights suspended from the ceiling. “This saves on valuable space without compromising on essential lighting,” she notes. Choosing floating drawers as bedside tables is an additional space-saving trick. Remember that in a bedroom you need to be able to switch a bedside light on and off from the bed, so careful placing of light switches is essential.

HEADBOARD HEAVEN Extending this velvet-upholstered headboard the width of the bed and side tables creates an opulent look that’s polished and put together. Interior designer Taryn Flanagan of Taryn Flanagan Interiors suggests using textures to create a layered look in a bedroom that makes it feel inviting. “Here leather details, knits, velvets and metallic accents all sit comfortably together,” she says. GLAM IT UP Nothing makes you feel more pampered than a glamorous bedroom – and this one ticks all the boxes with a metallic wallpaper, velvet headboard and faux fur throw. “Keeping all the elements similarly toned ensures this room has a luxe feel without being over the top,” explains Amy. “Layering textures also adds to the luxurious feel.” The bedside tables feature three drawers for extra storage – a functional element that ensures this room is as practical as it is pretty.

REFLECTED GLORY To make this bedroom seem much larger, Vanessa Taylor of Taylor’d Interiors placed two oversized mirrors behind the side tables to visually expand the space. “We also chose furniture pieces that are not heavy,” she notes. “The thin metal spindle legs on the table and side tables and the almost transparent feel of the Malawi chairs makes the room feel light and airy.” The raw wood finishes and texture of the jute rug along with pops of colour in the neutral palette create a layered feel that is interesting and inviting. ROMANTIC TOUCH A four-poster bed makes a statement in any room, harking back to historic homes. The Natal colonial feel is enhanced with the overblown botanical wallpaper while the turtle shell lamps emphasise the exotic feel interior designer Taryn Flanagan has created here.

TAKE A SEAT A bedroom should be a sanctuary and a space to escape to at any time of the day. “A pair of comfortable chairs and a side table is all you need for a welcoming space to unwind with a cup of tea or a good book,” says Maria Cochrane of Con Amore who designed this space. “Adding a TV is a bonus, especially in a guest room.”

fter a busy start to 2020 I was looking forward to getting away from traffic jams and enjoying some peace and quiet in the bush. I was not disappointed. Just over three hour’s drive from uMhlanga and set within the Pongola Biosphere Reserve on the banks of Jozini Dam, the peaceful haven of Tandweni Villa awaits. Not one to enjoy rustic living and roughing it, Tandweni Villa was right up my street – luxury living with all the bells and whistles, surrounded by the bush and wild animals. Everything about Tandweni Villa oozes comfort and space – and there’s lots of it. The massive wooden front door welcomes you into an open plan living area, dining area and fullyfitted kitchen, plus an entertainment area with sliding doors that open up on all sides, allowing one to take in the views and tranquillity. There are five double rooms – one with two single beds and three en suite – and all are beautifully decorated and boast views of the surrounding bush and Jozini Dam. As the afternoon heat started to subside, it made perfect sense to chill outside on the patio with a drink in hand watching nyala, buck and warthog graze nearby, a plunge pool to cool down in, and stunning views of the dam and up the Jozini Gorge. As the sun set and the stars lit up, the sky was transformed into a blanket of flickering lights.

This is Africa at its best. Undisturbed peace and quiet. A far cry from the city. The early morning picture was equally as stunning – still waters on the dam with a fine covering of mist which disappeared as the sun took hold on another day. Unfortunately we missed the elephants heading south much earlier, but on a late afternoon game drive we were lucky enough to see plenty of warthog, blue wildebeest, nyala, buck and an abundance of birdlife. Children are more than welcome, and within the fenced garden there’s a jungle gym and slide, plus a look-out where they can do their own game viewing. Besides relaxing with a book – indoors, on a lounger or on one of the many comfy chairs on the veranda – or simply staring out at the

Arriving back in uMhlanga on Sunday afternoon, I realised how lucky we are to have a slice of Africa a couple of hours away – close enough to be able to recharge our city batteries whenever we want.

GARETH BAILEY CONSIDERS THE PROS AND CONS OF LIVING IN A SECTIONAL TITLE SCHEME

choice of pets, how much noise you make, and how long your party lasts. It also affects your renovation and home maintenance budget decisions, as you will need to get body corporate approval before making any changes and all maintenance decisions are made communally. The converse of this is that residents can benefit from the diverse skills of fellow residents in managing the scheme, and the physical chores of property maintenance are shared

hile sectional title and estate living is becoming increasingly popular, the decision to go communal or remain independent in a freehold home is based on nuanced interpretations of the pros and cons of each. Improved security is probably the most obvious reason for moving into a sectional title complex, but there are a host of other factors to be considered. Firstly, the move often involves a smaller living area and garden space. It also means living in closer proximity to neighbours and managing these interpersonal dynamics. Some may find the social nature of complexes exhausting while others will thrive in the sense of community, knowing their neighbours and interacting with real humans as opposed to being cocooned behind high walls. Secondly, going sectional can limit freedom such as

between residents. Lastly, the running costs of sectional schemes can appear more expensive at first glance. This is because the trustees have a duty to maintain both an administration fund as well as a reserve fund to cater for the operational and maintenance requirements of the scheme. The requirement for the reserve fund came into operation in 2016 and requires trustees to save an additional 15% of the coming year’s administration

fund contributions in the event that its reserves are less than 25% of the past year’s administration fund contributions. If reserves are over 15% but less than 100%, then the trustees need to make reserve fund provisions for the coming year’s anticipated repairs and maintenance budget. This additional provision over and above the ordinary levy may seem expensive upfront, but it is essentially providing a buffer from unplanned future

Sectional can limit freedom such as choice of pets, how much noise you make, and how long your party lasts events and relieves residents from inconvenient adhoc special levies. If it is well run, the scheme should benefit from economies of scale and be more cost effective than freehold properties in the medium-term. Importantly, having a structured approach to operations, maintenance and saving should mean that the aesthetics of all the sections and common areas are upheld, which will in turn positively impact the capital value of properties over time. While some may prioritise independence over all other factors, others will enjoy the benefits of sectional title living. With input from an experienced and reputable managing agent, body corporates can avoid the most common pitfalls, draw on their independent opinion in resolving disputes, and pave the way for joyful, community living.

The

aster was always an exciting time as a youngster. Mom, dad, brothers, uncles, aunts and cousins trooped off to our beach cottages down the south coast for the weekend, and as I was quite a bit younger than everyone, the famed Easter Sunday egg hunt was designed just for me. Spoilt brat, people may say, but it was anything but. The Easter Rabbit – as I called him ’cause it just wasn’t cool for a boy to use the word “bunny” – never disappointed. He always arrived while I was still in dreamland, hopping around the vast garden, finding those challenging spots among the trees, plants and rockeries to hide those precious treats. “Go and see if the Easter Rabbit has been,” were the words from heaven as I tumbled out of bed with purpose and determination. Somewhere in my haste a packet was thrust into my hands, always a good sign as it meant there would be more treats than I could actually carry. Then it started. The ultimate challenge and the whole garden was in play. As the sun peeked through the tree branches I was like a faithful bloodhound, nose to the ground, eyes darting here and there searching for something bright, a reflection off something that would lead me to the hidden treasure. In the background I had an audience. Somehow, they seemed to know where everything was hidden. Whispers, comments, advice was offered as I collected my stash, stumbling into wellmanicured gardens, banging knees and elbows against steps and rocks and feeling no pain as the gain was too great. Alice may have visited Wonderland, but this was far better. There were no distractions, no opposition, it was just me. As my stash grew, my mind conjured up images of the ultimate chocolate feast as I pictured myself surrounded by a

HUNT is on

THIS YEAR EASTER WAS VERY DIFFERENT FOR US, BUT DAVID KNOWLES HAS FOND MEMORIES WORTH SHARING mountain of chocolate enjoying life in the ultimate heaven. And then, in a flash, it was all over, although I always wondered about the one or two prizes that might have been overlooked by me. There was always that niggling little voice that teased me, making me think that perhaps I had missed something and that somewhere, deep in the shadows of the garden, there still lay unfound Easter treats that had escaped my clutches and were left to the elements. For a brief moment, this was the ultimate world, surrounded by chocolate and sugar.

But, danger lurked in the background. Having done all the hard work, reality kicked in when mom swooped in to take charge of all my stock. It was heartbreaking. All that effort, the scars, the dirt, the scratches, the wounds of battle, all to see the fruits of conquest whisked away. It just didn’t add up. I had done my bit and now it was all gone. In her wisdom, of course, mom knew best. Through my eyes, my treats were being taken away, but she was ensuring they were kept in the fridge and that I would have many hours of enjoyment and pleasure from them over the next few weeks – and, more importantly, that no one else dared lay hands on them. Those hard white eggs with chocolate on the inside have become a favourite of mine, but when I first came across them, I messed up badly. Mom had added one to my school lunchbox as a treat, and on fetching me from school, she couldn’t resist asking how I had enjoyed my surprise. I looked at her with a heavy, sad face before saying, “That boiled egg you gave me was way too hard to eat. I couldn’t even crack it, so had to throw it away.”
