Summer is in the air A

s I write this – embracing load shedding and the fact that the mosquitoes are back – the first blanket of humidity can be felt in the air. It’s going to be a hot summer – and this issue has a distinct summery vibe about it. Over the last few years – and more so during lockdown – social media has taken over our lives, making every social gathering with friends, event, shopping experience and even meal you eat, an instant share with friends anywhere and everywhere. Nicole Kruger – featured on the cover – is passionate about making social media work for women entrepreneurs, and has

Where art meets fashion has been a long-time aspiration of fashion designer Jenni Button. Jenni may no longer have a boutique in uMhlanga, but in November she will be exhibiting her abstract canvasses and latest designs at The Pencil Club. Turn to page 14 to feast on her exquisite clothes and art – pure inspiration and creativity that are beautifully in sync with one another. Art of a different kind – yet just as inspiring – are hand-painted sneakers from entrepreneur and artist Max Shephard. A great idea for a Christmas present – see page 26. Congratulations to Keyrus – a home-grown company in Mount Edgecombe – who celebrate 10 years in business; to Beko who have opened an appliance store at The Crescent; to Hyper Pool who opened a year ago and have been offering expert pool advice to our community; to Village Health Pharmacy who

have opened in uMhlanga Centre; and to Danté who celebrate one year in business offering clients great food, amazing cocktails, stunning sea views and everything you need for a special event. To all these businesses celebrating milestones, and to the many others in our community, you are what makes this the perfect place to live on the East Coast. It’s almost time to celebrate the holiday season, so turn to page 19 for the latest cocktail invention from Danté – and your chance to win R1 000. Enjoy! Until the next issue …

The Divine HAS BECOME NATURAL

Well over a year ago rebranding efforts turned Divine Elixir into Natural Elixir. The same elixir, just a new bottle. The Durban based operation is still crafting 100% natural, vegan, and gluten-free health tonics. More recently, two new additions have been added to the range – a Lite Elixir, and a CBD Infused Elixir. In both, black pepper replaces cayenne making it less spicy than the Regular Elixir. Book Launch: WE BOUGHT A VILLAGE Laura Tippins, a literature lecturer, launched her book We Bought A Village in uMhlanga recently. The book details the lives of an extended South African family as they split the cost of purchasing a small village in Spain and move across the globe, thinking a change of country would be the solution to their problems. After an intense year of being worked on, the book is a clear reminder of the power of introspection and family relationships. The author’s charming and endearing style of prose perfectly encapsulates the cross-continental settings of South Africa and Spain. SHORESIDE TERRACE Cafe Gaby Fernandez – former owner of Gaby’s Tasca in Durban North – has moved further north, opening a cafe at the Shoreline Sibaya Estate bringing a Mediterranean touch to the Sibaya Precinct. The decor is fresh and welcoming and there’s a sea view albeit fairly distant. The menu is varied with some tempting options. While Gaby has kept some of his signature Portuguese dishes, such as Trinchado, Peri-Peri Chicken Livers, and not forgetting his legendary prawns, he’s revved up the menu with a selection of pizzas, burgers, quesadillas, tortillas and some interesting vegetarian options. The chips are hand cut and the salads are also worth investigating. FOR MORE INFO: 087 821 7884;

The Durban BUCKET LIST The Ultimate #durbanbucketlist was created in 2018 to give locals and visitors to Durban a reliable and up-to-date resource of the best experiences to have during their time in the city. “We have walked the miles, tested the menus and tried the cocktails, all so you can enjoy the best of the best in your own time and with absolute peace of mind,” says creative director Susan Marais. Fast forward to 2021 and our beautiful industry is on its knees. “Lockdown

after lockdown has severely impacted our venues, and the recent tragedy in our province has sadly been the final straw for many amazing businesses,” says Susan. “But

there is always hope and a few people can find the light at the end of the tunnel like the restauranteurs, hosts and hoteliers. These are the people who get up and show up time and time again to delight, entertain and feed others.” How can you help?  Eat Out Our restaurant industry has been hit hard. It employs an immense number of skilled and unskilled people, so by eating out you not only help these businesses survive but also the families they support. Restaurants have some of the strictest Covid protocols in place and are ready and excited to serve you.  Support Local You don’t have to go far to create amazing memories with your loved ones. When looking for things to do, start in your immediate vicinity. Our city has fantastic museums, walking tours, hiking trails and more. Let’s bring business back to our local family-owned businesses.  Your Mental Health Is Important Yes, we said it. We have to be

safe and follow protocols, but we also have to start living our lives again. Don’t go out only to support others. Go out to see your friends, motivate each other and lift each other up. Meet at a market, on a hike, or at a beautiful restaurant over a cup of coffee. We are not made to live in isolation. Please consider connecting with friends and family in responsible ways and supporting local venues in the process. FOR MORE INFO:

years, her Philosophy brand. It won’t be a real surprise to devotees of her distinctive ranges that Jenni is, in fact, a fine arts and graphic design graduate, not clothing. But the design-art connection has always been there: “Ever since I can

remember – age four I think – I began drawing women. Always women. Perhaps it was an early fashion obsession, but I was infatuated with elegant women in beautiful dresses,” says Jenni. Her career began at acclaimed advertising agency RSTM Ogilvy & Mather, starting off in a junior skivvy role, and moving up to art director. When you ask her about mentors, she talks rather about inspirational figures from the art and fashion world. She adores colour, so talks Ronald Sassoon, Mondrian, Rothco and Willem De Koning, so when RSTM O&M were tasked with the Citi Golf ad campaign, her instinct was to play with their colours. Her legendary Red, Yellow, Blue Not Green ad became one of the most successful car campaigns in Africa. She has wonderful memories of time spent at RSTM O&M: “Advertising was probably my best school. We gladly worked ourselves to death, slept under our desks rather than going home, faced the fierce competition head on. But it was such a stimulating time, and that wonderful competitive world teaches you to always think out of the box, develop ‘blue sky’ thinking to anticipate and predict what’s ahead.” Ahead for Jenni, was a long-held dream

I was obsessed with clothing, first with Armani’s simplistic design, then later, with print, and I still am

of owning her own boutique, so when she came across a little shop in Adderley Street Cape Town, that was it. “I always wanted my own exclusive boutique inspired totally by Armani’s masculine entry for women into the marketplace, with unafraid, brave, bold cropped-haired women like Annie Lennox and Madonna. Donna Karan’s powerful yet feminine designs were a huge inspiration. I opened Jenni Button.” She laughs: “I knew nothing, I just wanted to do it. I’m sure everyone in the industry laughed at me. I could just tell what the big factories were thinking, ‘We’ll give her six months, she’s never going to survive’. When I think back to that moment, the passion I had, combined with blindness and naivety … if I knew then, what I know now …!” Yes and no, of course, because Jenni Button did more than survive. She became a label with which to be reckoned: “I was obsessed with clothing, first with Armani’s simplistic design, then later, with print, and I still am.” She put together ranges unlike anyone else’s, and she did everything herself. All the designs. She pulled in two partners who handled the finances, employed a production assistant, opened several other stores, and alone, she continued to design. But as the years ticked over, the clothing industry faced numerous onslaughts, not least of all production out of China which she refused to support. But more than that, Jenni could see the writing on the wall as the “home and cocooning” trend deepened: “Clothing as we knew it, is no longer a priority,” she says bluntly. Jenni Button closed its doors a few years after she left the company … and her next phase, Philosophy was born. Her loyal clientele still wanted her designs, her eye, her brands, and that was 22 years ago. Little doubt the transition was tough, but Jenni’s no quitter: “I always look »

towards the sun, rather than dwell on the past. I have an ‘I Can Do This’ attitude, and it’s carried me through.” Her intention was to keep Philosophy far smaller, fewer stores, more like a hobby. With one eye on the diminishing market and the arrival of Covid, she took the decision to do things differently. She moved online, although for her, this isn’t a very successful platform for high-end fashion as her clients still want to touch and feel. Today, Philosophy has a footprint in a new store in Parkhurst in Johannesburg, another in Newlands in Cape Town – where she lives – and another in a fabulous boutique called Tten Bazaar in Plettenberg Bay. She has a small design room, and she’s still designing every garment. She’s a great exponent of supporting local, and says many of her clients are phenomenal – particularly those in KZN – they buy exclusively local. Of course design is art, but Jenni’s art has taken an entirely new direction, more abstract, massive canvasses sometimes two and three metres: “Fashion drawings have their own style, and even at college, I had to take care that when I drew women I didn’t make them too pretty, taller, thinner, less cellulite, too predictable, or literal. I think that’s why I love painting men.” Jenni says it’s taken her 20 years to draw like a child: “That’s the whole cathartic process which I’m going through right now. Abstract art is so much more challenging than my super realistic portraits.” She’s done a full 360, and is drawn strongly to contemporary art: “Graphic design teaches you how to simplify. When you design a logo, it has to hit you slap bang in the middle of the forehead. I do have this innate graphic gut.” Jenni’s love of bold colour stretches from acid yellow, greens and turquoise, to red: “I’m Aries, so I’m drawn to the warmer

One more year,” she says. “Just one. Then it’ll be time to leave Philosophy behind, and head to glorious Tulbagh, to my wonderful farmer man – olives, wine, art and gardening. I’m essentially reclusive, and I love being and staying home, surrounded by nature and my cats, and simply doing all the things I love.”

f you don’t try you’ll never fail or succeed. You’ve got to risk it for the biscuit and we took that risk,” says charismatic Msizi James, radio presenter at 947 and self-confessed lover of all things coffee. Chances are he’ll be dunking his biscuit in a freshly brewed cup of Gaya Coffee, a brand and company that he launched along with

his childhood sweetheart Angela McGennis in September. The two met at Hillcrest High and plan to marry in December. “We both work several nine to fives. But I have always said that I owe a lot of the passion for this new business to Angela. I’ve never met a harder working person. When we got engaged, we decided we needed to start our own thing and create

our own legacy for our own kids and to work on our own terms,” he explains. Angela, a graphic designer and events specialist, is behind the branding while Mzisi brings his marketing and entertainment credentials as well as experience gleaned during a coffee journey that dates back to 2017 when he joined Beethoven Coffee. Apart from giving up his much loved

tea, he says he has learnt to enjoy both coffee and the business of coffee. He has partnered with a number of individuals and coffee companies en route and starting their own brand was the obvious next step. “Angela, being the branding genius she is, came up with the concept for Gaya. The name is the Zulu word for grind and this pays homage to my culture. It’s also a colloquial word for working. It suited our personalities. We both work long hours and we have created a coffee for people who are, like us, always on the grind. But we didn’t do the clichéd celebrity thing of naming our product after ourself. This brand needs to be bigger than we are,” he continues. Although he doesn’t do coffee snobbery, Msizi says they haven’t skimped on quality and, as part of their house blend, have included beans from Tanzania and Brazil.

LEFT: Angela and Msizi – creators of Gaya coffee.

If you spell Gaya the Greek way, it means earth and speaks to another important value that the couple share – a commitment to sourcing coffee beans ethically and sustainably. Gaya started with a small business loan

We didn’t do the clichéd celebrity thing of naming our product after ourself. This brand needs to be bigger than we are” and a partnership with friends who roasted the first 100kg of Gaya coffee. What Msizi and Angela hadn’t banked on was selling out within just two days. A second batch sold out as quickly and a third and

much larger batch is already in the factory. He admits they were a little overwhelmed and certainly extremely grateful. Right now, they’re selling Gaya coffee online and to some restaurants and cafe’s but have big dreams for the business. This includes enabling people to click on different flavours to create their own blends which they will then roast. They also want to buy their own roastery and create jobs. Already, Msizi is a partner in four Gauteng-based Ground Up coffee shops. These and Gaya were all created during the pandemic – a time when most would have shied away from new ventures. “I don’t want to use a clichéd term like ‘iron sharpens iron’, but I think the pandemic has forced a lot of people, including us, to pivot. I’m on radio and in the entertainment industry and spent a lot of my time touring and at events. I thought I had my life sorted but all of that was rocked and half of my salary disappeared. The pandemic forced me and my fiancée to rethink what we do. We could have just sat here and complained and waited for the pandemic to pass. Instead, we were forced to be creative and to combine our skills to start our own thing.” Already, they have big plans for their fledgling coffee business as well as plenty of ideas and dreams that they hope to turn into realities in the near future. As soon as the wedding stress is over, he says all their efforts will be focused on growing Gaya and taking it to the next level. This could include the very first Gaya coffee bar. “You have my word that the first Gaya Coffee Company coffee experience – which is the bar – will be in uMhlanga. We’re going to start one very soon. All I can say is watch this space – uMhlanga will be surprised,” he laughs.

uring lockdown, Ana says she spent time “painting what I saw”. Her home overlooks the ocean, so she captured skylines and ships, imagining how those on board were feeling during the pandemic. She discovered the ship’s names, posted these paintings on her social media, and accompanied them with text to uplift spirits. The wife of a seafarer contacted her – her husband’s ship was in one of the paintings – and this amazing friendship developed. That’s Ana, a connector, warm and generous. People are as drawn to her as she is to them. She might tell you her own story of deep trauma and unimaginable loss, but through these life experiences, her empathy connects her to people. She’s often able to counsel others: “Narrative therapy can be very beneficial – telling your story may be a path to healing.” The process of painting can be a catalyst for recovery. After Ana completed her fine arts degree at DUT, she followed it with a teaching qualification – she’d always wanted to teach and mentor. Becoming a mom was a significant time in Ana’s life, and still is: “Part of my creativity and artistry is about having children. I believe that’s one of the most profound and celebratory spaces a woman can enjoy.” Ana’s studio in the grounds of her home is glorious. Its courtyard looks out on to her beloved garden, a source of creativity. Built to her design, she describes the studio as a womb; a sacred space for sure. High ceilings and filled with light, the walls are covered in her art and numerous works in progress, with the aroma of coffee and her baking a wonderful constant thread: “I’m of Portuguese descent,” she smiles, “I cook, it’s part of our culture.”

Of special meaning for me are bouquets from friends; lots of pink, a colour that speaks to me of healing.” Ana felt the need for a sabbatical this past year, and lockdown facilitated that: “It was time to recalibrate as an artist, pause the workshops and classes. It gave me time to produce this major explosion of work – my travels in Africa – it’s rare to be able to do that, and very satisfying.” Ana’s artwork A Jazzy Ensemble – a painting of the King Protea – formed part of the Pencil Art Foundation’s exhibition entitled Shattered Ceilings held in August. She’s presently working towards a showing of some artwork at Tamasa Gallery, with the theme Travels in Africa, “possibly the biggest body of work I’ve ever done,” she says. Other work is displayed at Etchings Gallery in Durban North. When the pandemic allows, Ana will open her studio again, and is planning workshops.

ax Shephard is Durban born and bred, but he calls himself South African. His sexy sneakers are, well, sneaking into the SA psyche, as increasingly, everyone celebrates the opportunity to stand out from the crowd. Max moves between the provinces, with a footprint in Durban, North West and Johannesburg CBD. He has five promoters for his business, and he’s the only artist, so artwork on Instagram, Facebook and other sites is always his. He’s a freehand customiser, and very rarely traces: “I just get to it, because I feel like it

That’s not what he does: “My ‘customs’ come with brand new shoes. I far prefer that because it’s much cleaner and more exciting. I use Angelus

playing with photography at high school. But what he was good at – and clearly still is – is entrepreneurship, and at 16, had his own brand of T-shirts which he sold to his classmates and friends: “I only really started painting when I finished school,” he says, “and everyone liked what I did … so I charged them for their customised sneakers, and it ended up as a business. ABOVE: For Max Shephard, his creative talent might have started with sneakers, but he has much bigger plans up his sleeve. BELOW: Mickey Mouse, Dragon Ball Z, something pretty or kick-ass bold – Max can turn a plain pair of sneakers into a work of art. So who buys them? Max laughs, “People who love art. I have a wide age group who buy … and the favourites are Mickey Mouse and Dragon Ball Z – they’re definitely the most popular designs.” For ordering, Max uses an App called The Custom Movement

for customers to choose what design they’d like, but he says people usually text him on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. He’s also working on a website for online sales. Max has a price range determined by the design the customer wants, and it includes the shoes and delivery. For now, Max Customz is sneakers. But Max has his eye on the bigger picture: “This is just the beginning. I’m thinking customised cars and jewellery. We will also have our own first-ever sneaker customising store, where, if you want to, you can customise the sneakers for yourself after buying them.” He’s currently training a few others to run private customisation classes in Durban and Johannesburg. Like most entrepreneurs, Max is an adventurous person: “Always been. When I’m interested in something, I challenge and push myself further and further. That’s just who I am.”

t was rainy and cold when I visited the flower farm near uMhlali, but as I entered the greenhouse my spirits were immediately lifted. I was greeted by a happy burst of multi-coloured gerbera disappearing into the distance. Rob Tucker, the owner of these flower fields and his charming manager, Sbonelo Mguni, shared their story. Rob explained that he annually imports tissue culture gerbera plants from the Netherlands which take four months to reach full production. He sells the large gerbera flowers to Woolworths from whence they are distributed countrywide. Wandering down the central passage, flanked by a greenhouse of ruscus – the green filler plant loved by florists – we finally came to a closed door and the main reason for my visit – the anthurium house. What an amazing sight, even though they had been cut for market the previous day I was faced with an array of flowers ranging in colour from dark mauve through to the palest pink plus white blooms and soft greens with bright pink stamens. The flowers ranged in size from giant flower-heads through to the more delicate-looking shell-shaped flower. It was a breathtakingly joyful sight. As the operation is wholesale, I asked Rob about the export market. “No, I don’t export at all. It’s not costeffective as the European markets are serviced by the central African countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia. Their governments and foreign aid donors back them heavily on the logistics side which makes their freight costs a fraction of ours. They

Our competitiveness is further eroded by very high comparative labour rates and the fact that they have almost perfect climatic conditions for the production of crops. Tips from LoveLaugh Florist According to Cindy Rynhoud of LoveLaugh Florist in Ballito, anthuriums are low maintenance and able to sustain heat and humidity. Also, they last long, so are a cheap option. • The flowers last up to a month in a vase. • They don’t like direct sunlight. • The water needs to be changed weekly. • Anthuriums enhance a minimalist look – three anthuriums and a delicious monster leaf is all you need for an arrangement. • For weddings and functions anthuriums combine well with dried palm leaves and pampas grass. • They offer a huge colour range. White being the most popular, with green. • Anthuriums are versatile and combine beautifully with orchids. FOR MORE INFO cindy@lovelaugh.co.za; 083 875 4263

Johannesburg Flower Market to which he sends a bi-weekly truckload of flowers. He services the Durban market as well and occasionally sends flowers to the Cape Town market. Another of his big buyers is Woolworths – so when next you buy gerberas from Woolies, remember, you’re supporting local industry. The entire operation is hydroponic and digitally controlled. The plants are drip-irrigated daily, the irrigation being staggered according to the radiation intensity. Climate control sensors are dotted throughout the greenhouses and computer-controlled roof panels, which adjust automatically, control the natural ventilation. Rob explained: “Although I am able to control the entire operation sitting on a beach in the Seychelles, in actual fact, someone has to be around all the time in case there’s a digital or mechanical glitch and the roof panels jam. Should this happen, especially in summer, I can lose my entire crop within 10 minutes as the heat in the greenhouse can top 50

degrees.” There is also a huge back-up generator that kicks in when Eskom goes walk-about. Until Covid, the operation was 100% wholesale but when lockdown struck Rob had to shut his doors, being a non-essential farmer. The flowers kept blooming though, so instead of simply dumping them and incurring a total loss, Rob opened his doors to the greater Ballito community and sold his flowers at cut-rate prices. People rallied around and supported his business, so in gratitude for the local support that kept him afloat during those dark business months, he continues to sell to the community. Initially, Rob farmed sugar but always dreamt of rather having an intensive farming operation over which he had total control and didn’t have to deal with the vagaries of nature. With a grin he says, “Now I live my dream, I have 100% control, budgeting is easier and more accurate, and I work in a really beautiful factory!”

aserati has launched the all-new Ghibli Hybrid, which represents one of the most ambitious projects in its history. It is a performance sedan with a combination of petrol and electric power – fully contained – that delivers on the performance and passion that The Trident is known for. The Ghibli Hybrid is immediately recognisable thanks in part to the new design of both the exterior and interior.

THERE IS A SPARK OF ELECTRIFICATION IN MASERATI’S FUTURE, AND IT IS AVAILABLE NOW IN SOUTH AFRICA. INTRODUCING THE NEW MASERATI HYBRID RANGE

The common denominator of the restyling, developed by the Centro Stile Maserati in Italy, is the blue colour, chosen to identify all cars with hybrid technology and the new world they are moving towards. On the exterior, the blue colour characterises the three iconic side air ducts, the brake callipers and the thunderbolt in the oval that encloses the Trident on the rear pillar. The same blue colour reappears inside the car, particularly on the embroidered

seams of the seats. The Ghibli Hybrid also introduces new stylistic contents, starting with the front grille, with bars redesigned to represent a tuning fork, a musical device that emits a sound of extreme purity and which also evokes the Trident symbol itself. There are significant changes at the rear of the car, where the light clusters have been completely restyled with a boomerang-like profile inspired by the 3200 GT and the Alfieri concept car. In perfect harmony with its DNA,

w w w . t h e r i d g e o n l i n e . c o . z a

Following on the global success of the Ghibli Hybrid, Maserati has introduced the stunning Levante Hybrid. The quintessential performance SUV utilises the same mild hybrid system and e-Booster to deliver immediate power and low fuel consumption, all in a fully contained system that does not need to be plugged in. With the tagline

COMING SOON

MASERATI LEVANTE HYBRID “Spark the next” the Levante Hybrid is faster than a diesel, more sustainable than diesel or petrol power, and unique in its specific

characteristics with new generation technology and immediate power delivery. This includes the unique blue highlights outside and inside the cabin, and a powerful engine that delivers 255kW, 450Nm of torque and a top speed of over 240km/h. The complete range of Maserati models is available for viewing and test driving at Maserati Johannesburg.

Maserati has chosen a hybrid solution focused primarily on improving performance, while also reducing fuel consumption as well as emissions. The hybrid technology exploits kinetic energy the car accumulates when in motion, recovering it and transforming it into electricity during deceleration and braking and storing it in a battery. This means the Ghibli Hybrid has power available on demand, without the need to ever plug it in. The innovative powertrain combines an internal combustion engine – a 2-litre high-power turbo engine – with a 48volt alternator and an additional electric supercharger (e-Booster), supported by a battery. This solution is the first of a new generation of powertrains, with the perfect trade-off between performance, efficiency and driving pleasure. The battery is mounted in the rear of the car, with benefits in terms of improved weight distribution. It also means the Ghibli Hybrid weighs about 80kg less than the diesel model. Thanks to a maximum power output of 255kW and torque of 450Nm delivered from just 2 250rpm, the new Ghibli Hybrid’s performance stats are impressive – top speed of 255km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in 5,7 seconds. With world-class electrification technology and a unique visual signature, it may come as a surprise that the Maserati Ghibli Hybrid is offered at an entry-price of R1 642 000. The Ghibli Hybrid offers access to one of the world’s most iconic sport sedans, with some of the most modern interiors and luxury Italian materials as standard. The Maserati Ghibli Hybrid is fitted with The Trident’s new high-speed, HD touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in. FOR MORE INFO www.maserati.com/za/en

Hyper

POOL

YOUR ONE-STOP SPECIALIST SWIMMING POOL RETAILER – AND CONVENIENTLY LOCATED IN UMHLANGA

W

hen Hyper Pool Group opened its first branch in KwaZulu-Natal in uMhlanga in November last year, it planned to build both a strong foundation and sound customer relationships. A year later and the national group expects its first full summer near the seaside to be a strong one. “The company culture is that we wanted to grow organically. From the outset, we wanted to make sure we were properly grounded as a business, that our staff are well trained. More and more customers are finding out about us, and we are learning about the area as customers are learning about us,” says head of the KZN branch, Rathin Vasram. He says the choice of location was important as uMhlanga is not only a prime area, but one that lacked a one-stop specialist swimming pool retailer and relied on large mall-based suppliers. Hyper Pool soon discovered they’d filled an important gap. Even during the winter months, growth was steady. The Group brings 30 years of experience to its customers and is a true entrepreneurial success story having grown from a single shop in Vereeniging into a national group that now also has its own brands, AquaKing and Eartheco. Rathin has more than 10 years’ experience in the industry in KZN. With this background, Hyper Pool not only supplies the trade with equipment and products for building and maintaining swimming pools, but also welcomes all pool owners who need assistance with their pool care requirements, and distributes and delivers product from its 600m² facility to a broad range of clients within the province. Going forward, Rathin says Hyper Pool intends growing its footprint in KZN, and establishing itself at the forefront of new technologies, strong trade partnerships, and serving the needs of local pool owners.

Automatic Pool Cleaners Get a new pool cleaner, or a few replacement parts. We'll also repair it for you.

Pool Pumps Pool pumps to suit most residential pool sizes. Or bring in your existing pump for a service or inspection.

Filters Filters available from a 1 bag, up to a 5 bag. Don't forget the filter sand to go with it.

Chlorine and Chemicals A full range of chemicals to balance your pool water chemistry, and give it that sparkle again.

orld Mental Health Day on October 10 drew attention to mental health needs and issues across the globe. The past 18 months have been stressful to say the least, and Paul says it is clear that the pandemic has affected people in many ways – including emotionally. “There is more and more research suggesting that it has and continues to be a collective trauma, which will affect people in different ways in years to come. People who have been especially vulnerable are Covid-19 patients, those who have lost loved ones and employment, healthcare workers, and children and teenagers worrying about the vulnerable adults in their lives.” Trauma is generally the emotional response to a terrible and often life-threatening event, whether real or imagined. “The exposure to a traumatic event or trigger sets into motion a series of physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural responses,” explains Paul. “Although many of these responses are normal, adaptive and part of a clever system to keep us alive, persisting responses or symptoms can become unhealthy. Most people, with time and good self-care, are able to get better. However, some people may develop longer-term difficulties – including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).” Paul explains that PTSD is a psychiatric condition which

needs to be diagnosed by a registered health professional. This diagnosis is made when trauma symptoms persist for more than a month, are significantly intense and interrupt a person’s daily functioning. Symptoms may include high levels of anxiety, panic attacks, intrusive scary thoughts, flashbacks and nightmares, trouble concentrating, irritability and outbursts of anger, hopelessness, a lack of interest and avoiding certain people, places or activities, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, and self-destructive behaviour. “There is value for anyone who has experienced a traumatic event to talk about their experience with trusted people in their lives. This helps the brain, body and self make sense of what has happened, and map out ways of coping and readjusting to life. Seeking out professional help for trauma response becomes more and more important the more intense and/or longer these symptoms persist,” says Paul.

ABOVE: Psychologist, parenting and career specialist and author, Paul Bushell. Children have also been emotionally stretched and affected by this pandemic. Their daily lives and routines have been disturbed, and many of their normal rites of passage and developmental experiences interrupted. They have experienced the loss of loved ones, and been surrounded by the fear of contracting and infecting others with Covid-19. This has resulted in a variety of hard emotions – including fear, frustration, anger, sadness, grief, and anxiety. Although children have all the same feelings as

w w w . t h e r i d g e o n l i n e . c o . z a

adults, it is sometimes hard for them to make sense of these feelings and find healthy ways to deal with them. Although children have shown to be largely adaptive, Paul says it is important to remember that they will need ongoing support. “The supportive adults in their lives need to make space for these feelings, by talking about them and finding healthy ways to express and work through them. Avoiding our feelings can result in pent-up emotions and maladaptive behaviours. Regularly checking in with children and starting conversations about where they are at, is very important. This can be supported by talking about and rolemodelling – in front of children – different ways of emotionally coping. Seeking the support of a psychologist or counsellor can be very useful for families and children as they work through these emotions,” says Paul. “Help-seeking is important for all of us, and no one should feel like they have to work through their experiences and emotions alone. Research about the differences between online and in-room counselling and their effectiveness continue to emerge. When choosing a counsellor or seeking help online it is important to research their qualifications and accreditation, and get a sense of whether they would be a good fit for you,” concludes Paul.

MSSA KZN recently hooked up with four wonderful UKZN Psychology Masters students who ran a four-session zoom care group, discussing anxiety and depression and how to cope with it. “As MS can be a debilitating autoimmune disease robbing patients of movement, cognitive faculties, dignity and setting of a plethora of unbearable symptoms, we are starting a programme which will, once a week, via zoom, connect with patients and offer courses,” explains chairperson Dee Munks – sharing the following ideas: • Laughter therapy. • Private therapy session with UKZN Psychology Masters students. • Talks by Dr Comrie who focuses on the immune system. • Art and music therapy. • Journalling and poetry writing. • Public speaking – get out of your comfort zone. • Art of communication. • Mad Hatter quizzes. • Vision boards. • TRE sessions. • Food/recipes for the MS body. “We are hoping this programme will put a spring in their step and let them know that they are valued and thought of,” adds Dee – encouraging readers with a special interest they can share with MSSA KZN to make contact. Notes from the UKZN Psychology Masters Students

Zandile Mtshali

Sannah Tsatsawane Zimbaye Kelly Leahy I feel grateful and privileged to have been a part of the MS Support Group. It was empowering to engage with a diverse group of people who continue to remain positive and honest with themselves, despite their challenging experiences. The session I hosted focused on a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skill of applying radical acceptance to living with MS. While this is an abstract concept and skill that can often be difficult to grasp, and some individuals may not be ready to begin to radically accept their unique condition, the MS support group were able to understand this skill, share their experiences, and apply it to their own lives in various ways.

Julia Michaelides Being a part of the MS Support Group was a heart-warming and enlightening experience. From the outset the entire group was welcoming and open, and incredibly supportive of each other despite the different stages of MS. The session I hosted touched on a topic that many may consider “taboo” – namely reaching out for help. Even though the topic was difficult, the group was open-minded and willing to share and contribute. I really enjoyed engaging with the group – such an important part of the MS community and a vital part of any person’s journey with MS.

My overall experience of the MS Support Group was nothing short of astounding. Attendance was progressively higher with each session, which led to increased information and experience sharing from members – who were resilient, open, trusting and transparent. I learnt a lot just from facilitating and sitting in a few sessions, they were welcoming and receptive of the information and concept I shared – such as understanding anxiety and coping with uncertainty as MS patients. Members provide social support to each other which decreases the risk of social withdrawal – in instances where they may be experiencing overwhelming thoughts and feelings – thus contributing towards their mental wellness.

I enjoyed working with the MS Support Group, they have so much energy. Even though this diagnosis comes with a lot of emotional and physical problems, I observed them having a desire to be in control. The few sessions spent with them were beneficial, particularly because most of the time people presenting with MS are taught to focus on their physical challenges. Nevertheless, emotional challenges are just as essential, and lack of adequate support structure may lead to them having mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety. I also feel support groups are necessary for individuals presenting with MS as some go through so much loss, such as losing their loved ones and inability to do things they used to enjoy. Knowing that there are people you can reach out to, who are going through the same journey, is so beneficial.

ollowing the sales success of Mt Cotton and Salta Estate launched earlier this year, Salta Sibaya – just north of uMhlanga, perched above uMdloti beach – has launched a new residential offering, Capri Village, a vibrant coastal lifestyle for the over 50s. “Salta Sibaya embodies the essence of family, fun-filled moments with friends and an engaged lifestyle. Capri Village is an extension of this seaside experience, designed to provide a distinct and affordable home for the over 50s market within Sibaya. We want this new offering to present a space to unwind from life’s demands and embrace Durban’s chilled, laidback atmosphere. We’ve worked closely with the best in the business to create a newage retirement product that meets the demand in KZN,” shares award-winning developer, Charles Thompson, Devmco Group. Pamela Naidu, head of sales and marketing for Devmco Realty reveals, “We launched at the beginning of September, and so far most of the buyers have hailed from KZN and surrounds, people who are searching for a turnkey and holistic solution for their needs.” Capri Village residents will have access to their own facilities that include a clubhouse, bowling green, bocce ball, indoor pool, library, bar and entertainment areas, dining room, and cocktail lounge and patio. In addition to this, all Capri Village residents will have direct access to the holistic estate’s amenities, from the secure onsite shopping centre, business hub, recreational and relaxation zones to clubhouses and sports facilities. Pets are welcome. Capri Village will also offer residents nursing care powered by Totalcare, and a consultation room and nurses station. “We’re proud to partner with Devmco Group on this exciting new development. Together we aim to provide world-class care for the future residents of Capri Village. Our facilities are modern and slick, offering those in our care a premium experience that is tailored to their needs,” explains director of Totalcare South Africa, Cornel Nieuwenhuizen. Capri Village forms part of the ongoing Retire KZN platform. “We started Retire KZN four years ago to provide essential retirement data analysis and investment insight into KZN in order to improve and innovate the retirement sector as a whole. Through our research, we understand how the word ‘retirement’ has not always been well received and often individuals are put off by the notion of settling into a traditional retirement estate. We have noted how there has been a need in the property market for a revolutionised and vibrant estate, that caters to the active and engaged over 50s market. Capri Village is a great example of how research data determined the product – based on needs from the over 50 audience in KZN,” says Stefan Botha, director of Rainmaker Marketing.

“When creating a coffee station space, it’s best to have everything on a tray. Ideally this should be placed next to the kettle or coffee station, and styling should be simple and beautiful to create interest – and convenience – especially as this is a very well used area in my own

home, and I’m sure yours. “I like to play with different textures to create visual interest and impact. In this look I started with this beautiful rattan and bamboo tray as the grounding. Next I placed two very on-trend ceramic “face” tea and coffee canisters, and gold teaspoons in a shallow wooden bowl, then for softness and my personal weakness, added some flowers on and beside the tray. “I love the inky blues that are out at the moment, and these ceramic mugs and small candle add a pop of moody colour which I thought was perfect to introduce. When you get tired of them, simply swop them out to change the look completely. “I honestly feel that beautifully styled areas are so easy to achieve today – especially with the choice of decor items available locally – and hopefully this look has inspired you to create a coffee station space in your home to enjoy and uplift you,” says Lisa. he best investments are the start of a relationship – a good, trusted, long-term relationship with the person or company who holds your funds, vision and future in the palm of their hands. At Sensible Solar, it’s precisely the same. “When you make the decision to partner with us on your solar journey, it’s Day One of our long relationship. Given the length of the warrantees on our products, our relationship is going to last at least a decade, and likely much longer,” says Mauro Martini of Sensible Solar. “From the day we assess your solar needs at your home, business or farm, we establish a WhatsApp group with you and ourselves. That open communication line stays in place for the duration of our commitment, and forms a visual, written and spoken record of your service experience with us.” Sensible Solar’s Warwick Chapman described the premise upon which they operate: “Essentially, the right system, designed well and installed correctly, will pay for itself within its warranty period. For the rest of its life, it will make you money.” At that very first meeting, Sensible Solar will show you precisely how that works. “The relationship with Sensible Solar usually starts with indicative system pricing being exchanged to establish

FOR SENSIBLE SOLAR, EACH NEW CLIENT IS THE START OF AN EXCELLENT LONGTERM RELATIONSHIP whether we’re in the right ballpark as far as expectations are concerned,” says Warwick. “Thereafter, we perform an on-site assessment of the roof, the installation location, and the cable routing. situation and requirements. Sensible Solar are unmovable on using quality products with long warrantees. As the team says, “Our combination of brands is not cheap, but they form the basis of a sound investment decision. Our power equipment – inverter and solar chargers – comes with a ten-year warranty; the battery a ten-year warranty; the solar panels a twelve-year warranty. On top of that, we guarantee our installation workmanship for ten years.” The ethos underpinning Sensible Solar is always about solid, reliable and honest relationships. “Many of our clients begin with Sensible Solar in their homes, and progress to their businesses. That shows the strength of the relationship,” says Mauro. “We use the right products, we do good work, and we honour our promises. Our clients know that.” Sensible Solar is a team of professionals comprising qualified electricians and solar installers who train with industry bodies PQRS and PVGreenCard. They are accredited Victron Energy and Freedom Won battery installers. And even though it’s my favourite season, it’s still a challenge choosing and advising women on the correct sandal that is both stylish and trendy, yet suitable for their feet. No one – not even granny – wants to wear granny sandals, so I’ve made it my mission in life to find fashionable sandals that look good, fit well and are comfy. Here’s what to look for in a sandal. ¥ Dress for the activity: How much time you spend on your feet will determine which

Your shoe cupboard should be made up of sandals you can wear all day, ones you wear mainly at home but which offer good support and comfort, and ones you’ll wear if you know you’ll be sitting most of the time. Of course, you’ll also need that pair of sexy heels for special occasions (then grin and bear the sore feet the next day). ¥Your sandal and foot should function as a unit when walking: There should be no need to grip with your toes or hold on to the shoe when walking. This will cause a change in foot mechanics and place strain on joints and soft tissue which could lead to painful feet, joints and even back pain. Avoid slip-ons – and if you must wear them, keep them for “sitting” occasions. ¥Choose a sandal with a supportive strap across the front of the foot and around the ankle: The function of the straps is to make sure your foot and shoe “work together” as a unit – so no need to hold on to the shoe when walking. ¥Choose a sandal with a slight heel: Yes, we were designed to walk barefoot, but our bodies have adjusted. Wearing a heel of at least 1cm in height can feel comfortable and complement our walking and standing. ¥Always be on the lookout for sandals: If you come across a comfortable sandal buy it in every colour. Think out the box and venture into all shoe shops looking for sensible yet funky sandals.

n a world where people contact has become largely electronic, a business offering personal service is akin to finding a gem – in this case a gem that has grown from a small butchery to a thriving food business. While diversifying their brand, Gary and Michelle van den Berg’s passion for food and commitment to personal service has remained their top priority. Speaking from their uMhlanga Rocks Drive store – which is also their current headquarters and distribution centre – Michelle recalls: “Gary’s dream was to own a restaurant. Being in the meat industry combining both his dream and his passion for meat resulted in the creation of Karoo Kitchen Deli & Butchery.” The happy, fun working environment has resulted in staff loyalty. One of the founder staff members, Rodney Pillay, is now an operating partner. Priscilla Khumalo started as a retail packer four years ago and is now block-woman and manageress at the Ballito store. Both management and staff share the principles of customer care. Giving back to the community is also part of the enduring ethos of management, generated through sponsorships and charities. While specialised products such as cured charcuterie, guinea fowl, ostrich and wagyu beef offer some exciting options, core favourites remain

BEEF OR VEGETARIAN? WHATEVER YOUR TASTE PREFERENCE, ANT ELLIS SHARES HIS SECRETS TO THE PERFECT BURGER

G

od Bless the burger. Arguably the World’s No 1 Handheld Food™ (note: tacos may have an existential issue with this), the burger is a globally revered symbol of quick and rockin’ eating, a hangover staple and a versatile-but-supposedly-naughty double-hander on which rich and poor, young and old, black or white can all agree. These days, burgers come in more shapes, sizes and varieties than ever. While for me a classic American bacon double cheeseburger is the holy grail, everyone has their favourite, for sure. Gourmet burgers have come and gone in and out of fashion, chicken burgers are an official South African food group, and even though there are plenty of really good vegetarian burgers

BURGER vs BURGER on menus and available in retail these days, now we can even get plant-based burgers engineered to taste like actual meat. What’ll they think of next? Everyone, and I mean everyone, knows well the “oh yeah” satisfaction that comes from a great burger. And so many – both restaurants (including specialist burger franchises) and home cooks alike – have professed to have delivered the ultimate, greatest, most deluxe, legendary, unbeatable blah blah burger. But as they say, burger beauty is in the eye of the burger holder – one way or another, they all rule. Whatever your preference – meat,

chicken, fish or veggie – there are a handful of common notes that can’t be ignored:  Don’t eat ’em every day.  Don’t bulk up your beef patties with things like breadcrumbs, onions or egg – keep them clean and simple.  Fresh buns are mandatory.  Always include a variety of textures – fresh, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, creamy mayo.  Balance the savoury with something acidic.  A mountainous side of salty, golden and crispy fries is a must.  Finally, gourmet is good, but classics are classics.

season with salt and pepper. Divide mince into 4 balls and compress tightly in your hand, then flatten out between sheets of wax paper or cling film so patties are the same diameter as your bun. Add sunflower oil to a flat-bottomed frying pan, heat until just before smoking. Add bacon and cook until crispy, then remove and set aside. Add patties and cook for about 2 minutes, then reduce heat and turn, topping with cheese slices and covering pan with foil so cheese melts. Stack two patties on the bottom half of the bun, layer on pickles, onion rings and 2 slices of bacon, then finish with the top bun. Pro tip: Add a medium fried egg.

New-school Deluxe Sweet Potato And Black Bean Burger YEAH, I’M GOING THERE. I RESPECT THE HERBIVORES WHO WALK AMONG US – BUT, IF I WAS ONE OF YOU, I’D WAY PREFER THIS DELICIOUS VEGETABLE OPTION TO ONE OF THE MASS-PRODUCED PASTES IN THE SHAPE OF A PATTY.

Ant's New York Bacon Double Cheeseburger I’VE BEEN. I’VE TRIED, TESTED AND CONQUERED. BASED ON MY THREE FAVOURITE BURGERS IN NEW YORK CITY, MAKE IT THIS WAY AND NO OTHER WAY, EVER. Makes 4 patties. • 500g lean beef mince, max 20% fat • salt and pepper • 2 Tbsps sunflower oil • processed cheese slices • creamy mayonnaise • sweet mustard • raw red onion, sliced into rings • sweet and sour pickles, sliced • lettuce • tomato • 2 soft white buns • 4 slices streaky bacon Before you cook the burgers, prep the buns. Toasting isn’t necessary. Stack as follows: On the bottom start with a lashing of mayonnaise, then top with lettuce and tomato. Coat the inside of the top bun with mustard. Place beef mince in a bowl,

• 2 cups mashed sweet potato • 1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice • 1/2 an onion, finely diced • 1 tin black beans, rinsed and drained • 1/2 cup ground nuts OR raw oats • 2 1/2 tsps ground cumin • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper • 1/4 tsp chilli powder (optional) Preheat oven to 190ºC. In a bowl coarsely mash beans, add remaining ingredients and mix together. When perfectly combined, shape into patties on a lined baking tray and cook for 30-40 minutes. Be careful to avoid them drying out. Use a brown bun and different ingredients to top such as rocket, feta, salsa, pineapple or onion jam. Until next time, make those sunny weekends count. Cook outside, drink refreshing ice cold drinks and eat like your life depends on it.

fter coming out of months in hibernation, nothing quite says “We are still here” better than a return to a fashion trend from 20 years ago. Whether you like it or not, Y2K fashion is back with a vengeance. After all, it is a natural place to return to, given the nostalgia for a simpler time, before the overwhelming universe of social media and the unexpected turmoil of a world pandemic which changed the landscape of our lives. For millennials, Y2K fashion captures the energy of their childhood and early teens. This aesthetic has a slightly retro edge with some futuristic touches. Step into summer with the nostalgia-driven movement of gaudy Y2K with the following necessities. 1

Bubble-gum Pink

Bubble-gum pink sees a definite departure from the neutrals that have commanded our wardrobes for the past few seasons. The Barbie approved hue – which is brighter than the soft, millennial colour – is punchy, bold and vibrant. It’s the dose of fun that your wardrobe will welcome after what feels like a lifetime in loungewear, through multiple lockdowns. Ease yourself into the vibrant trend with a subtle pop of colour.

With the tech boom in the early 2000s, the idea of futuristic fashion was a huge trend. Shiny materials in silver or pearlescent shades are a great way to make your outfit pop and add a touch of nostalgia. Try a metallic puffer jacket or a pair of pants. If you prefer to keep it subtle, wear accessories or a crop top in luminous fabric. 3

One of the cutest trends from the early 2000s is the tiny T-shirt. Typically, the shirts are cropped above the belly button and are a looser fit across the chest. Brightly coloured and playful accessories formed a major part of any respectable 2000s outfit, so your 2021 wardrobe should be stocked up with some nostalgia-inducing pieces. Stark BEAUTY

READY TO EXPLORE A GAME PARK WITH A DIFFERENCE? SHIRLEY LE GUERN HEADED TO KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER PARK FOR AN ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME

I

absorbed the perfect peace and quiet. To say that the KTP has a stark beauty would be an understatement. It certainly lives up to its status as one of the Northern Cape’s arid parks. The massive open plains which are often populated by herds of springbok, blue wildebeest, black and white masked gemsbok (oryx) and around 16 000 ostriches are striking. The same goes for the massive dunes with lower levels clad in long blond grass that sways in the wind and bright red sand peaks reaching

f you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure that is nothing like the tamer visits to the Kruger National or KwaZulu-Natal game parks and you’re happy to shrug off city comforts, then an expedition to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) is for you. Pack a sense of humour, a spade and tow rope (to dig out your vehicle if you’re brave enough to go without a 4x4 like we did), a good first aid kit and plenty of braai

Expect extreme temperatures which reach well into the 40s in summer, and freezing nights and mornings in winter kos and you’re good to start your threeday trek to the Northern Cape. Our trip – planned in 2019 but scuppered by lockdown – took us via Johannesburg and then through some grubby pot-holed dorpies (marketed as quaint historic towns), through Uppington and then to Twee Rivieren which is both the gate into the KTP and first rest camp. There we deflated our tyres to take on the sand roads, got used to collecting and handing in permits each day so that we could be rescued if we didn’t return, and

towards the bright blue sky. It is here that you may see the fabled black maned lion sunning himself in the winter sunshine or find some of the park’s graceful cheetah. The key to game viewing is to be patient and to look for the unexpected. While we are all used to ticking off the legendary big five, you won’t find elephant, rhino and buffalo here. Zebra, warthogs, hippos, crocodiles and most of the game that you would ordinarily associate with our reserves are also absent. Instead, you can look forward to honey badgers, bat eared and Cape foxes, entertaining meerkats and brown hyenas.

Majestic giraffes can be sighted close to Mata Mata while mischievous jackals scamper across the plains, often nipping at the heels of springbok. Most of the game gathers around the small waterholes that are dotted along the roads which join Twee Rivieren with main camps such as Mata Mata and Nossop as well as unfenced tented wilderness camps. Kgalagadi means thirstland and the water that comes out of taps at the self-catering accommodation and campsites is very salty. Fortunately the shops in the main camps keep plenty of bottled water and some basics. Expect extreme temperatures which »

reach well into the 40s in summer (so hats and sunblock are musts) and freezing nights and mornings in winter. Even during our August stay, warm jarmies, beanies and gloves were indispensable – especially in the tented camps where there is no electricity. Most of all, take your binoculars and cameras as the KTP is a photographer’s paradise. The birding is great with magnificent raptors like the Marshall and tawny eagles,

You may see the fabled black maned lion sunning himself in the winter sunshine or find some of the park’s graceful cheetah goshawks and a variety of owls often found perched in the camel thorn trees. Secretary birds and kori bustards pick their way elegantly through the grass. The KTP – which is the amalgamation of South Africa’s Kalahari Gemsbok Park and Botswana’s Gemsbok National Park to form one of the largest conservation areas in Africa – also comes with plenty of history. Settler homesteads have been preserved for visitors and there is plenty of signage telling you the story of this extremely unusual land.

BIGGER

is the way to go EVEN WITH A PANDEMIC STILL LOOMING OVER US, THERE HAS BEEN INCREASED MOVEMENT IN THE LUXURY RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY MARKET, WRITES GARETH BAILEY

O

ne of the noticeable trends in the residential property market this year has been a discernible uptick in demand for luxury homes in the R10-million plus price band – a sector where freehold properties have enjoyed an increase in demand. Much of this demand has been driven by local buyers who have identified specific areas of interest and understand that the current market, characterised generally by motivated sellers and well-priced stock, presents opportunities which offer exceptional value for money. In regard to freehold homes, these have clearly benefitted from lockdowns and the shift to remote working, experiencing 6% price appreciation since the start of the year (Jan to April 2021) compared to 3% for sectional title homes. (Source: Lightstone). That aside, generally we find that in the apartment living genre, penthouses are highly sought after and due to their nature, limited in supply, and

62

and spacious – usually with the very best finishes and features such as large windows with abundant natural light, expansive patio and private swimming pool. More importantly, they offer privacy,

ABOVE: Gareth Bailey, Pam Golding Properties.

Some buyers seeking privacy and palatial homes prefer freestanding mansions because they are not governed by the restrictions that arise in gated communities as a result yield very good returns on investment. In our experience they enjoy a premium of some 20-25% over other apartments in the same building. They are luxurious

w w w . t h e r i d g e o n l i n e . c o . z a

often with their own elevator and entrance. Penthouses, such as those in the Pearls of uMhlanga, can fetch prices of up to R30-million and above. Covid-19 has brought with it the notion that we might be living with it for some time to come, which implies that lockdowns and “work from home” will affect a significant portion of the high-end buyer population. As a result, we’ve seen a trend towards larger properties – even in apartment sales – to accommodate the work from home way of life. Buyers

believe that if they are going to be in lockdown, it should be in a space that facilitates some form of normality. Some buyers seeking privacy and palatial homes prefer freestanding mansions because they are not governed by the restrictions that arise in gated communities. For this reason, half our sales concluded with high networth buyers comprise large freestanding mansions. As the suburb itself is secured by multiple security patrols, with large homes and expansive gardens, upper Durban North

continues to attract affluent purchasers who seek privacy above all else. Estates are always popular, but sometimes size and height restrictions limit options for the mega-wealthy who prefer to have freedom of choice in terms of size and design. Within uMhlanga and surrounds, the movement in this upper price bracket has been split equally between sectional title schemes on the beachfront or within gated estates, and freestanding homes not within estates. Certainly, the trend is towards gated estates and sectional title, especially on the front line of the beachfront. It really comes down to a lifestyle choice for buyers. Areas where homes in this price segment are particularly appealing are the Izinga estates on uMhlanga Ridge, La Lucia Ridge, Hawaan Forest Estate and Signature Sibaya, an estate up our coastline. While some may find it ironic that the Covid pandemic, given its economic impacts, has resulted in increased demand for bigger, more luxurious and freestanding properties, a significant proportion of the population in this market segment is seeking a higher quality of life, both within their property and its surrounds, and in doing so, is augmenting a semigration trend from noncoastal to coastal areas which started gaining pace well before Covid-times.

S

ummer’s coming up, and damn it, I’m going on holiday. When last did we have a proper, sunny, summer’s holiday? “I remember the last time,” said my partner. I do too. I took my partner away for a week on an island. I wanted it to be perfect, so I did all the planning and thought of everything – sunblock, books, alcohol hidden in the suitcase so I wouldn’t have to pay hotel prices. We emerged on the first morning, pale as a pair of weevils, and stretched out on sun loungers with a happy sigh. Perfect. And then, in the distance, came an ominous rumble. “You did check the calendar, didn’t you?” my partner asked. “Huh?” And then she said the two scariest words I know – scarier than “tax return” or “vegan cuisine” or “Remember me?” When I hear these two words I tremble and start checking nervously over my shoulder for a slithery, sticky herd of multifanged noise-monsters. The words are: “School holidays”. I love schools. For several hours each day, they protect peace-loving tax-paying citizens from other people’s children. We can walk the streets unmolested and shop in malls with freedom. Then once the little beasts are released from school they’re usually too exhausted from the deserved beatings and

I love schools. For several hours each day, they protect peaceloving tax-paying citizens from other people’s children a fool would book a relaxing holiday at a beachside resort during school holidays. The ominous rumble became

an invasion. Like a plague of leaky-nosed locusts they over-ran us – yelling, splashing, shedding bodily fluids. I managed to bring down some of them with karate chops but there were too many. It was hell! “You’re over-reacting,” said my partner on the second day. “There’s only about five kids. And look – that one’s quite quiet.” It was true. While the other kids ran around touching all the food on the buffet, setting fire to the thatched roofs of the bungalows, he just sat in the shade nearby, reading superhero comics. “He’s up to no good,” I hissed. “How do you know?” my partner said. “Because he’s a kid. And

what’s he doing over here, near the adults, instead of playing with the others?” “And what were you like as a kid?” she asked pointedly. I thought about that. A little later I happened to sit near him and since I had nothing better to do, we started talking about comics. We argued about Spiderman, and then about what the best super-power would be. “That kid,” I said, when I returned to my partner, “is a fool. Imagine thinking it would be more useful to shrink yourself than to be able to breathe underwater.” That night at dinner a woman introduced herself as his mom. “Thank you for talking to him,” she said. “He’s an only child, and his Dad passed away and I don’t want to smother him, but I sometimes worry that he’s lonely.” “He’s OK,” I muttered, “for a kid.” My partner looked at me patiently. “I’ll keep an eye on him, if you like,” I grumbled. So for the next week I talked comics with the little creep, and taught him to snorkel, and we both learnt how to waterski, which made him laugh because he could do it and I kept falling. He and his mom left two days before us, and on the last day I sat with my partner beside the pool, and it was so quiet and so peaceful. “You miss him,” she said. I did. Kids. They ruin everything.
