Interview with Fanatic Wave R&D Manager and PWA Pro Klaas Voget on the Stubby TE, the new FreeWave STB and Blast: Last season you surprised the scene with a new and slightly awkward looking board, the Stubby. For 2017, Fanatic is extending this concept into the FreeWave and Freeride lines. What’s so exciting about these short-nosed boards? »It’s the feeling under your feet. These boards are an exciting and unique ride. The shape of the nose is the first thing you recognize, but the concept behind this design is more than just a chopped off nose. It’s the idea of maximizing the effective rail line and reduce the board to its functional length. The more parallel rails provide excellent control and fast planing characteristics. The straighter water flow around the board produces less drag when compared to a rounder outline, which increases overall speed. The much wider tail and nose gives a lot more stability to the board, whilst the narrow centre balances out the extra width under your feet.
Our first board in this direction was the Stubby. Long before we launched it last year, we knew it had what it takes to be loved by many, rather than being a niche product for a handful of hardcore wave freaks. It’s the easy planing, the control and speed the board delivers in average conditions and less than perfect days; it’s so impressive. With the compact length and overall trim – which is much further back than usual – the reactions are super responsive and quick, making these shapes feel alive! At the same time the short length feels natural and not as weird as you would expect. But the real winning characteristic of these boards is their huge range! The Stubby is super fun in smallish side-onshore conditions, but I can easily take it out in 4 m side shore Hookipa and I still love it!« Fanatic was the first major Wind surf brand to go in this direction. How did the idea come about, and how did you get this concept working so well? »Sebastian Wenzel and I are constantly looking into different
surfing concepts, yet the actual input for our first board in this direction came from inside the Boards & More group in early 2014, when the R&D Team of North Kiteboarding showed us their latest protos. Their excitement gave us the initial push to build a windsurf board with a similar idea. I think our intense research and input from North Kiteboarding, in combination with the huge database of shapes Sebastian has built over the years, all played a part in our first design. We kept the R&D process totally under wraps from thereon out, and developed for more than a year when we launched the Stubby. The big success was that we didn’t focus on making this board something for certain conditions or a certain type of rider. We spiced it with a pretty flat rocker line, a controlled V bottom and all the user-friendly elements whilst finetuning the shape. The result was so good that my teammates and I use the Stubby in PWA competitions. Its carefree yet secure character, as well as its outstanding upwind ability make it a huge success. It felt natural that the FreeWave STB and the Blast follow this path.« You stated that this concept originated from the world of surfing. You’ve now taken it to flat water with the FreeWave STB and the Blast. How does this work? »There has been a lot of exploring with parallel rail concepts in the surfing world. The main benefits of these so-called ›modern planing hulls‹ is their ease of use and the speed these shapes generate. In windsurfing we have completely different forces working the board and fins when compared to surfing. The board doesn’t just have to work on a wave, it also has to perform in a straight line and in jumps. This is pretty much what we’ve experienced with this

concept during the R&D process. It works well on a wave and is especially fresh and efficient on the way out through the break. The new FreeWave STB and the Blast are the logical consequence of our findings from our different Wave protos. We explored all the segments throughout our range and found the perfect fit in the FreeWave, and the sporty Freeride range. The STB is the next level allround performer! It’s so crisp and fast. It just wants to jump and fly around. On the wave it’s slashy and forgiving at the same time. A bit like the classic FreeWave, but with lots of extra horse power! And the Blast, I must say I can’t remember having so much fun on Flatwater and open sea just blasting around! It feels almost as fast as our Falcons and is an effortless ride. I’m sure the Blast and the FreeWave STB will put a big smile on a lot of windsurfer’s faces!
You offer ›regular‹ shapes as well as ›Stubby-Style‹ boards. Which rider should grab one of these modern shapes, and who should stick to a proven ›regular‹ board? »Generally it’s much more a question of personal taste rather than ability, location and conditions. In our range, we’ve placed the Stubby-Style boards in the ›next step up‹ category of each line. If you’re an experienced wave sailor facing a lot of ›average‹ days, then the Stubby is what you want. If you’re a wave newbie, the extra length and width of the TriWave will give some additional stability. The Quad targets the experienced wave sailor who gets to sail in ›better‹ waves more frequently. The FreeWave STB is the next level cross-over shape from flat water to smaller waves, mainly for the rider who wants one board
that fits all. If you prefer the classic outline rather than a crisp, more sporty ride, or you’re looking for that extra forgiving length and smooth turning, then we still offer the classic FreeWave. The Blast is placed right between the easy going Gecko and the lightning fast Falcons. If you want the next step up from your Gecko or classic Freerider, but don’t want to fight with your gear and bring the physics to the limit, then Blast is your board! It’s made for the rider who wants to overtake their buddies with ease and nothing but a smile on his face. Sporty ›Freeride 2.0‹!«

A light weight, yet robust Wood and Glass fibre construction allows for an extremely high strength : weight ratio. This combined with the Double Sandwich construction is an extremely durable layup. The thick PVC Sandwich, Wood and Fibreglass easily absorbs high forces, from even the hardest of landings. The CWS can be found on all standard FreeWave models.
High Resistance composite technology is a durable construction for everyday use. A thick, durable outer skin gives the hull maximum strength, as well as making it ding and impact resistant. Strategic use of fibre reinforcements ensure adequate stiffness. In combination with the user-friendly EVA deck, HRS can be seen on the standard Gecko, as well as the Viper / Ripper ranges.

Making its way into the 2017 Wave and TE Freestyleboards is the brand new Biax Innegra Carbon Light Finish technology. After the resounding success of using this high-end construction on our TE boards over the last three seasons, we took the initiative and next technical step by introducing a brand new, and exclusive Biax Carbon / Innegra fibre finish. BIAX INNEGRA CARBON VS INNEGRA CARBON
45 / 45 degree Biax Innegra Carbon fibre, with an additional 90 degree fibre weave layer on top. This combination of precisely placed fibres caters for a perfect balance of flex and stiffness.
90 / 90 degree Carbon Innegra weave with extra fibre layers in the same direction.
Extra wide Carbon and Innegra fibres with a linear alignment for best strength and efficiency of each individual fibre.
Smaller fibres are woven, which creates a non-linear alignment through constant distraction of each fibre.

WA VE BO AR DS A winning reputation is always a good start to a well-rounded range, and our 2017 Wave line is no exception. All of our Wave and FreeWave models have weight saving, premium quality layups that represent the Fanatic brand as you’d expect. Knowing that all good things come in small packages, we love the short and sweet outline of our Stubby range. Although its appearance might not scream ›wave riding machine!‹ it's short nose and wide surface area make it incredibly efficient at getting on the plane, and maintaining power through flat sections of the wave. At home in smaller less vertical waves, we guarantee hours of slashy skatey fun. Combining technological concepts and innovative design, our range is sharp, fast, responsive and sporty. New for 2017 is the FreeWave Stubby. Available in three sizes and two top quality constructions, it combines planing, control, and that skatey feel of the Stubby, along with the bump and jump characteristics of our world renowned FreeWave. The FreeWave line remains one of the most versatile rides out there. A classic performer available in five sizes and multiple constructions, it thrives when setup as a Thruster or a Single Fin. In short, both boards are dynamite! For those driven by full rail carves, late turns and radical down-the-line wave sailing, then our Quad range will whet your appetite. Available in four sizes and with its magic rocker line, are you ready for the ride of your life? For riders wanting a more back footed ride, you'll find tonnes of lift off the back fin, plenty of planing power and snappy turns with the TriWave, available in four sizes.

This combined with a smooth outline and super sweet trim results in a Waveboard with radical turning abilities – without loosing planing power – control and ease of use. Designed to get the juices flowing, the Quad will put in a stellar performance regardless of the conditions.

S T U B BY Compared to the V-Bottom shapes of TriWave and Stubby, the concave Quad has pronounced front-foot style of riding allowing for a fluid, full rail carving style, tight turns under the lip and maximum drive with full grip. While the TriWave excels in maintaining speed in longer, drawn out turns, the Stubby has a more skatey tail release in the lip and is really playful in smaller waves. Able to fully lean into the turn, you can trust in the grippy rails and fins when conditions get a bit bigger. The Quad prefers to be ridden under the lip and loves to transfer the push of the wave into speed. With its superb control and speed, the Quad also likes jumping. However, it comes into its own and excels when riding waves.

TH E FA N ATI C ST U B BY REPRESENTS THE BENCHMARK OF A NEW ST YLE OF WINDSURF SHAPES! R ADICAL LOOKING YET SUPER EASY TO USE, IT SURPRISES WITH SPEED, PL A N I N G STA B I LIT Y A N D A D I FFER ENT S EN SATI O N I N THE WAVES. THE LINE OF 77 AND 88 GOT EXTENDED TO TH E FLOAT Y ST U B BY TE 99. EXCITED? YOU SHOULD BE. K E Y F E AT U R E S —— Straighter, more parallel rails for reduced drag and a cleaner waterline —— Short and wide ›Stubby-Nose‹ – reduction in boards length – for reduced swing weight, fast change of direction and rotations, as well as easy recovery from steep re-entries or jumps —— Wide double diamond tail for planing power —— Tail-channel for extra drive and control —— Reduced center width for speed and a straighter rail flow —— Trim and stance moved backwards in order to adapt to the board’s length, tail width and rocker line —— Larger Trifin set matching the board’s wide tail for incredible lift, drive and upwind ability —— Constant V with slight double concave for easy and controlled planing, and comfort in choppy conditions —— Full rails for stability, thin tail for grip and radical turning —— Slight tow-in side fins and channel edges for ideal water flow with minimum drag
Fanatic introduced this exciting parallel rail concept with its super compact length into the windsurfing world in early 2015, after a secret and intense year of R&D. Soon the market followed and jumped on the train, but the success and feedback on the fully developed, finely tuned Stubby showed that this was something people wanted! Everything is easy on the Stubby; speed and early planing, control and slashy turns. Its characteristics open up the potential to learn all of the latest moves, and with a new sensation for almost every style of wave conditions it has an incredibly wide range of use. Try it to believe it, then you’ll realise what all the fuss is about!
S T U B BY VS . T R I WAV E & Q UA D The Stubby comes with a different feel to the other two Wave boards we offer. Its planing capabilities are not far off the TriWave and with a more back footed style it also rides closer to the TriWave than the Quad, which rides more front footed. However, its super wide tail means that they Stubby has a totally different way of turning compared to the TriWave. If you’re happy with a classic ride and want the next step up from your FreeWave, the TriWave with its classic outline and incredible jumping potential is a top choice for you. If you’re looking for progression and something to spice up your wave riding with a different style, the Stubby will be a bundle of pure joy for you!

K E Y F E AT U R E S —— Innovative rocker line with flat spot concept for maximum planing power, and curved sections for tight snappy turns —— Double concave / V bottom shape for a controlled and fast ride over any chop —— Trim moved backwards for more direct turning reactions while using a faster rocker line —— New compact outline with a wider, swallow tail for snappy turns, tonnes of spray, lots of lift and stability —— Side fins with slight tow for smooth water flow, reduced drag and maximum speeds —— Flat deck for a stable stance and secure feeling even when the wind drops —— Fast and early planing Thruster setup, perfectly matching the boards shape and characteristics. Side fins in the light weight and easy to adjust Slot Box system (incl. Slot Box covers for single fin use) and center US Box for maximum adaptability
The TriWave is not only a favourite across all levels and weight categories, but it has swept up World Cup wins and several top 10 results in the PWA World Tour. Its incredible planing abilities make the TriWave a first choice for those riders looking to have a fuss-free blast. Regardless of how high the jump or technical the move, the four sizes from 74 to 99 are complemented with an MFC Thruster set as the perfect match for an unbeatable package.
T R I WAV E VS . Q UA D VS . S T U B BY The ride is a little more back footed when compared to the Quad. Youll get lots of lift off the back fin and plenty of planing power to get you through the flat sections, even in onshore conditions. The turning style is more snappy with the TriWave when compared to the more carving oriented, and fluid full rail style of the Quad. With its planing power and speed, the TriWave is not only the board for big hits and wave tricks, it also thrives on airtime and is the ultimate rocket for jumping. Compared to the Stubby, the TriWave gets going a bit earlier and reaches even higher top speeds. It keeps its pace unbelievably well in longer drawn out turns, whereas the Stubby rides with a more compact, skatey style with a different sensation underfoot.

FR EE ST YL E As the benchmark of Freestyle riding, the Skate TE is constantly feeding the hunger of ambitious windsurfers and is the weapon of choice for 6 times Freestyle World Champion Gollito Estredo. For 2017, the progressively finetuned shape channels Estredo’s ever evolving style through outstanding acceleration, speed and the exceptional ability for seamless transitions from aerial rotations into sliding tricks. The newly shaped TE 93 is more compact for even faster rotations and reduced swing weight. The BXF construction of the 100 and 110 are better suited for those grasping carving moves, pop and playing in small waves, as it is more forgiving than the high performance TE. Exciting, on-trend and hot to pop, the Skate will blow you away!

Combined with extra tail power, you are able to leave the water at any time, with smooth transitions from aerial moves into sliding tricks. An integrated arch support in the tail pad, combined with our light yet strong Biax Innegra Carbon (BXIC) construction rounds up the sensation and excellence you’d expect. There are no limits to your creativity with this board of a champion.

SLA LOM & RA CE When the flag drops, you’re off! Leaving the rest of the pack in your wake. Our Slalom, Race and Speed lines of the Falcon operate on a simple formula; acceleration, speed and the ability to change direction rapidly. The Falcon Slalom TE 89, 114 and 136 got some upgrades in the form of intense acceleration and early planing in order to match the award winning performance of the 99, 121 and 129. Directly evolved from our CAD developed Falcon Slalom line is the Falcon Formula. Designed to reach those tight upwind angles and dominate the downwind chase, its super light finish of Full Biax Carbon Sandwich makes it a winning formula. Living for the lighter days is the all-new Falcon Lightwind 159. Its finely tuned fin and mast position allow for sublime early planing and rapid acceleration, whilst the detailed cut out design and light finish construction ensures full control at top speed. If you’re a high speed adrenaline junkie then the Falcon Speed has got your name on it. Built purely to break records with phenomenal pace and maximum velocity, each model is a fine-tuned performer with impeccable handling, especially when gybing. Coming in three sizes (54, 68 and 79) and a light finish of Biax Glass Sandwich, there are no boundaries for the Falcon Speed.

If you’re looking for a highly tuned race machine with zero compromise, then you’ve come to the right place. The Falcon line has exceptionally fast acceleration and insane top speeds that are complemented with full control at all times. This year our R&D’s focus was on sizes 89, 114 & 136 in order to match the incredible winning performance of the 99, 121 & 129. Intense acceleration and early planing ensures that you’re able to make some serious ground from the start line and around every mark. Channelling the energy from the board in a straight line delivers full control at top speeds. Both, Brand Manager Craig Gertenbach and Shaper Sebastian Wenzel, know how hard it is to find a good rig for their kids, which is why we created the Ripper rig! A sail that is light, durable, easy to use and most of all compact. Brand manager Craig explains: “When teaching my own kids to sail, I quickly realized that one of the main problems with existing smaller rigs, is that they are too heavy overall and most of the weight is too high up making it really hard work from the get-go. As soon as smaller kids grab the boom, they were getting pulled over forwards. Wanting to solve this issue we worked on some compact designs. By using the lightest materials possible we were able to create a shorter and lighter mast, alongside slightly longer and reduced diameter booms, which became the Ripper rigs. These rigs are ideal for kids who are experiencing the sport for the first time. You can even use them to tandem sail with your kids as they are so short and compact. So if you are a windsurfing mum or dad, it's time to sacrifice a few hours of your own sailing time and get the next generation of rippers up and running!” Fanatic shaper Sebastian Wenzel: “I´ve taught all three of my sons to windsurf. The new Ripper rigs are great for helping more kids get into our sport. They're guaranteed to have fun even when getting acquainted with those first sensations. The rig parts are stored conveniently in a high quality nylon bag which takes up minimal space. I highly recommend it!”
