A NOTE FROM THE
June has been a hectic month, with Fandoms Assemble bigger and better than ever before, especially after the hiatus due to exams *yawns*. We hope everyone’s exams went well, and maybe a read through Fandoms Assemble will help you relax as it is finally summer! And with summer comes more time, so maybe you’re thinking about getting tumblr? Well, there’s no need to worry if it all seems far too confusing as we have a welcome pack just for you (pg 10). We also have a more of your wonderful talent within this edition as pg 36 includes some of your one shots. Jake Abel makes our cover swoon-worthy and is one of the most multi-fandom actors around (pg 18). What’s more, if you are ever bored and feel like reading some fics but don’t want to sift through all the rubbish ones, flick to page 20 to find our top fics. A huge shoutout to my real life friends, Amelia, Robyn, Ellen and Florence for helping me in times of stress and panic even though they didn’t have to. I owe them so much. All of our staff worked very hard to create July’s edition, and I hope you enjoy this edition as much as we loved writing it.

This month has been huge for Fandoms Assemble online. Due to the hiatus we had more time to develop our tumblr. We put up posters for those who wanted to become fandom updaters, and had a great response. 5 were chosen after a questionnaire and now altogether we have Nemi @swiftpotters, Imi @Saltysummerday/@hogwartschamp, Cian @Triwizardschamp/@acciotrio, Jessica @cumberbxtches and Jamie @thetrewlawney. Therefore, with the great help the fandom updates have been frequent on both the Fandoms Assemble twitter and tumblr, and we have been getting a great response. Moreover, we have designed a theme for our tumblr, which, if I say so myself, looks fabulous and that will soon be done and updated. Our twitter and facebook will also become more active once our exams are done and with the extra help from the updaters. 3

I wanted my account and my site to highlight how magnificent Jo is and remind everyone that yeah, the books are great but so is the woman who wrote them. I hope I made even just 1% of an impact on the internet to remind people that When did you first get into Harry and help spread the JKR love.
JoRowlingNet is a twitter account and website created and run by Jessica Aston. With just shy of 30,000 followers, JoRowlingNet has become one of the biggest Harry Potter accounts around and one of the first dedicated to JKR. Jess discusses all things HP and talks about meeting Queen Rowling herself!

get over that awe - no matter how many times you meet her. Jo has this magnificent stage presence and aura that surrounds her, it's really breath taking. She's funny, kind, humble, intelligent and all of that shines through when you meet her. Pictures don't do her beauty justice either.
You're one of the creators of RowlingCon, can you tell us a bit about that? Rowlingcon was an idea I'd come up with a year or so ago. I never thought it would truly go anywhere but I'd love to have seen if it did. At that time it was one of those 'imagine if this could happen' thoughts. It wasn't until the Bath Literature festival that I bothered to do anything about it. I was waiting for my row to be called to join the signing queue and I was in the middle of a minor freak out. I had absolutely no idea what I was going to say to Jo that wasn't going to sound like a jumbled mess of 'omdfgopjasjkmd I love you thank you for my childhood'. Lexy (@_Loony_Lovegood) and Imi (@HogwartsChamp) - part of the Rowlingcon team - turned to me and said 'Ask her about 9
Rowlingcon'. I ended up having a 5 minute conversation with a woman who has been a big inspiration to me since I was 7 years old. I don't know if I was more shocked at the fact that I was having a conversation with JK Rowling or that I was actually forming words. Jo quizzed me for details on what the convention was and was genuinely shocked that I wanted to have an event that literally celebrated her and her books. She was so humble. Her publicist turned to me and said 'we'll leave the details up to you' as I walked away. Since that day I put a small team together that basically created a detailed plan of what the convention was all about, all the events, security measures we can put in place at the venue and emailed it to Jo's publicist. Now we just wait for their verdict on whether they want it to happen/attend.
the studio tour so I'm going to have to get around to doing that and visiting the Wizarding World in Florida. Those two are my 100% must do's (meeting Emma Thompson and Gary Oldman are two other things I'd love to happen if luck was on my side).
This magazine is called Fandoms Assemble; do you belong to any other Fandoms? How long have you got? There's a lot. I'm super excited for the Vampire Academy film that gets released in February. I've been waiting for that day for 3/4 years. This fanfiction has a hugely accurate perception of the characters, especially Ginny Weasley who, for most fanfiction writers, can be difficult to interpret. JKR being included as a character is something I find quite unbelievable, however the writer nicely compliments her. The events are also very true to the books, with only a few changes. Ginny’s feelings towards Harry are exactly as imagined, with Ginny having a shy little school girl crush on Harry, to coming to terms with it, and then realising it was love.

This fic is a modern AU where Arthur is getting married. Beware of heavy swearing. I normally dislike modern AUs but this one changed me. Beautifully well-written; one moment tears were streaming down my face with laughter and the next my heart was breaking. The tension between Arthur and Merlin killed me and I’m not ashamed to say I squealed and threw my phone across the room a couple of times. The characterisation is spot on and, although the last chapter will leave you wanting more and you will DIE from the tension ((it’s still in progress)), it is a definite must read.

This is one of the cutest stories I have read in a while. Percy and Annabeth aim for the Isle of the Blest, and the fic basically tells of their three lives (hence the name). The writer uses ingenious ways to include most of the main characters, and although you may cry at the beginning, it is definitely a must read. It is not all romance, Annabeth stabs an Empousa and Percy strangles a dracaenae, and they both, with a special guest, go on a quest. It is a fic that will make you go awwww in places and really sympathise with Percy and Annabeth. All in all, 20 one of the best Percabeth fics I have read. 20

This fanfiction includes all of our favourite things, especially Johnlock. It has a cute fluffy ending to a lovely story. We loved all the mundane and funny and angsty and everyday moments you captured with this story. One of the best story endings ever written. Sherlock's manly and charming side comes out, which contrasts with the adorable side of John. A truly refreshing Johnlock fanfiction.

Although strong language is peppered throughout this fic, the flawless writing, perfect plot and outstanding characterisation make up for it. It shows a whole new side to the Avengers as a whole, especially Steve. It jumps back and forth between now and the forties, which can be quite confusing at first, but you do get used to it. It tugged at my heartstrings with Steve’s memories, as well as giving me so many Stony feels. What I love about this fic is that it isn’t just fluff with a loose plot; the plot comes first and the ship second.

The plot is a very intriguing idea. Castiel and Dean's love is shown in a cute manner (Isn't it always?) and the universes are described in great detail. The Destiel ship is so adorable in this fanfiction it will make you want to grab all things soft and cuddly. The way in which the writer has captured the characters' personalities is phenomenal - especially when this is usually a writer's downfall. Even Michael, whom we don't know much about is given heap loads of personality which coordinates perfectly.

Great use of speech throughout and the fanfiction and tension is evident between The Doctor and Rose; staying true to their characters. The alternative universe fits in great with the characters and the true Doctor Who universe, contrasting well be still but not changing completely.

Unlike other completely ridiculous Finnick and Annie stories filled with fluff, this one is so natural and the characterisations so believable, including surrounding characters like Mags and Snow. It is based from Annie’s reaping until around the next games with Finnick being her mentor. The way the writer develops their relationship is very sweet .Her madness is a lot more subtle than in the books but that makes it more believable. The way the author writes is almost poetic, they have a way with words and the pictures they create are so vivid. Although it is from Finnick’s POV, which does put some people off, it is worth it. From around the thirteenth chapter plus the reason why it is rated M is clear. It doesn’t have much swearing, although two sex scenes near the end. The warnings the author gives are ‘expected THG violence, sexuality, recreational drug use, forced prostitution’..
ONE SHOTS
Keep Your Kingly Dignity and Look Away—commen_sense. Merthur. K. Although not one of the best written stories I’ve read, the cute, fluffy Merthur plot makes up for it.
Alone On The Water—MadLori. JohnLock. K. Not a romantic pairing, but nevertheless this one shot is flawless. It will bring you to tears.
Angel Shots—Mistress Whimsy. T. I just keep on coming back to this fic. Dean is bored and Cas has to make sure he doesn’t escape and so Dean plays a drinking game… with a buddy. So fluffy and cute and just asdisfs. 21

After what many critics deemed a bad film in the second outing of the Iron Man franchise, Iron Man 3 really does get it right again. However, I didn’t see the problems with number 2. Iron Man 3 continues Tony Stark’s story after The Avengers, and he is back in his fabulous cliff house. Due to the events of The Avengers, Tony can’t sleep, so busies himself tinkering in his workshop whilst a terrorist – the Mandarin – carries out attacks around the world. That is the basic premise of the film, although there are a few twists – some of which you will see coming, and others, which you really won’t. I did find one of them slightly frustrating, but I won’t elaborate in case you’ve still not seen the film. All the main actors from Iron Man 2 return, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark as wonderfully as ever, Gwyneth Paltrow as his girlfriend Pepper Potts, and Don Cheadle as James Rhodes. In addition to the return of the core characters, Guy Pearce and Sir Ben Kingsley appear as Aldrich Killian and The Mandarin respectively, with both giving great performances. I’ve not seen any of Shane Black’s other films, although I’ve been assured they’re funny, and that’s something else to like about Iron Man 3. It’s funny. Although, that’s not to say 1 & 2 weren’t funny, this one is just funnier. However, depending on your view of comedy in a film like Iron Man 3, this can be a bad thing that detracts from the main story of stopping a terrorist. I did like it though, and not many of the jokes fall flat with an audience. Most important though, is the action. And it’s very well done. It’s all easy to watch, with no shaky-cam anywhere near it. The final fight scene is very impressive, and looks good on the big screen. There are some problems with Iron Man 3, though. I found one of the twists ridiculous, although this could have just been down to how the film was marketed. In addition, one of the design choices of the Iron Man suits grated with me. I don’t want to ruin the film for you though, but I’m sure you’ll know what I’m talking about if you’ve seen the film.

Overall, though, Iron Man 3 is a great summer film (even though it was released in May) and is one of the better Marvel – or is it Disney? – films to date. If you enjoyed The Avengers or are just a fan of the Marvel cinematic universe, then I highly recommend that you see this! And make sure you stick around after the credits!
THE LAST SONG By Nicholas Sparks The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks (author of The Notebook & A Walk to Remember) follows 17 year old Ronnie. Ronnie is your typical rebellious teenager, who, along with her younger brother Jonah, is forced to spend the summer with her father, who she has not seen for three years, after her parents’ messy divorce. Ronnie rejects her father's company and his attempts at trying to coax her into playing the piano, which she swore to never play again after he left, and instead spends her first day literally bumping into the totally swoon-worthy volleyball player, Will. The rest of the book follows Ronnie and Will as they grow closer (eep!) and as Ronnie becomes some sort of surrogate mother, for a nest of endangered turtles, we see her mature, and begin to grow closer to her father again. The Last Song, is a heart-warming, romance which is definitely worth the read (or even a watch, as it has a film adaptation!), but don't forget your tissues, because although it will have you kicking your legs with glee at Will and Ronnie, or smiling at Jonah, Ronnie's summer definitely is an emotional ride.

GAME OF THRONES? GAME OF FEELS! Season three of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones is based on his third novel (A Storm of Swords) and has proved to be one of the more painful season’s for its fans to watch (aside Lord Eddark Stark’s beheading, but we won’t go there.) What with the Seven Kingdom’s of Westeros still gripped by the hands of a terrible civil war, death and loss of favourite characters is inevitable.
Death? What would a Game of Thrones be without a few massacres and deaths? The assassination of would-be king Renly Baratheon means an altering of alliances within the war, to which secures the boy-king Joffrey Baratheon an alliance with House Tyrell, which leads to defeating his Uncle Stannis in the epic Battle of Blackwater. Furthermore, with the new-formed alliance between House Tyrell and his own, Joffrey has now secured the largest armies in the kingdom and seems undefeatable. The reappearance of his grandfather, Tywin Lannister, father of his mother Cersei, presents new challenges for him. Originally betrothed to Sansa Stark, still branded the traitor’s daughter and object of Joffrey’s torment, Joffrey is then confronted with the arrival of Margaery Tyrell, who then becomes his fiancée as opposed to Sansa, to reaffirm the new found alliance with her house, especially after the assassination of her aforementioned late husband Renly Baratheon. In turn, Tywin Lannister (grandfather to Joffrey) betroths his son Tyrion to Sansa, and they wed later in the season, despite Tyrion being in love with a prostitute, who is disguising herself as Sansa Stark’s handmaiden in the hope that Tywin Lannister does not kill her like Tyrion’s previous wife. Moreover, Tywin Lannister coerces Olena Tyrell (grandmother to Margaery) into marrying his daughter Cersei to her grandson, Loras, brother to Margaery and lover to Renly Baratheon.
The closest the Starks have been to a partial reunion is when Jon Snow was mere metres away from his half-brothers Bran and Rickon as they hid in a tower from the group of wildlings Jon has infiltrated. Bran and Rickon have set out from the ruins of Winterfell (conquered by the ironborn, namely Theon Greyjoy who is then captured by his kin and held captive and tortured) across the North with his protectors to reach the wall. Sansa is still in King’s Landing with the Lannisters, and married to Tyrion, despite Little Finger’s poor attempt to ‘rescue’ her. Arya is faced with having to brave the Riverlands, accompanied by Gendry (the bastard of Robert Baratheon) until he is taken by the fire priestess Melisandre, to Stannis Baratheon at his headquarters on Dragonstone island. King Robb Stark remains in the field of battle, having won each and every one that he has been in this season. He has to win his allegiance back with House Frey, as he broke the marriage pact his mother secured. However, upon the arrival of the Starks and their banner men, the infamous “Red Wedding” occurred in the ninth episode of the season. (Spoiler alert if you do not watch/read Game of Thrones!) As The Rains of Castamere played in the hall at the Frey castle, Lord Frey’s men stabbed Robb’s pregnant wife and killed him and his mother, along with his banner men. Arya Stark was outside waiting to be reunited with them until their untimely deaths. In the Eastern continent, we saw Daenerys Targaryen flee the political monstrosity of Qarth, and her dragons continue to grow, as does her fame. She sets out to buy an army, and acquires 10,000 unsullied warriors in Slayer’s Bay and frees two slave cities. All in all, this season of Game of Thrones has been as confusing as the previous two, with more 28 bloodshed and heart breaking moments, however, the fight for the Iron Throne still battles on, with little indication as to who could win this wretched war of the Seven Kingdoms.
FANDOM WELCOME PACK: AUTHORS JK Rowling (aka Queen Rowling). The fandom may argue about many things, but they can all agree Jo is their Queen. Dis her and you are dead. *Shakes fist* MOFFAT! GODTISS.! Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are those horrible writers who have left us waiting for fAR TOO LONG. Ahh remember the good old days when we had Russel T Davies and nothing was complicated? Me too. Now we have Moffat, the troller who keeps making our favourite characters/OTPS jump of buildings. Suzanne Collins wouldn’t be able to join our awesome writers list if she didn’t kill off our favourite characters once in a while. Which she did. Too much we think. Rick Riordan: Author of Percy Jackson or king of sass?100 people will get this wrong. Also Lord of Trolling. Do read his other fabulous books, too. Stephanie Meyer, whose writing may have been criticised by many, created a compelling love story, perhaps the greatest love story since Romeo and Juliet. Julian Jones has been with us for the whole journey, from The Dragons Call right through to The Diamond of the Day: Part Two. He may or may not have killed off one half of our OTP, but we are still thankful for bringing the legends of King Arthur to life. Christopher Paolini takes far too long to write the books. Far too long. Of course, they’re always worth the wait but shhh.

Terry Deary, the man who made history fun again. He is so fab he even appears in the TV show every now and again! John Green has written other books, yes, and The Fault in our Stars isn’t a fandom in itself, but for ease lettuce pretend it is. It’s strange to think a man who will cover his face in sharpie and is like a five year old child can sprout such profound quotes. Hmm. C.S Lewis, a magnificent writer, good for quotations, too. ‘You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.’ is one of my favourites. If someone tells you they haven’t read at least The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe they are either lying or not worth your time. Michael Grant: Author known mostly for the GONE series. From reading it you could be excused for thinking he has a sick and twisted mind, and you’re probably right, but damn can he write a good book series. 29

Ron Weasley was starting to shut down. The only thing he could do was stare at Fred's body and he felt cold inside. He collapsed onto his knees next to his brother's cold body, tears falling from his eyes, making streaks in the dirt on his face. George was there, next to him, crying harder. Subconsciously, he put his arm around his broken older brother, but it was like he was inconsolable; he just wouldn't stop crying. His parents stood at Fred's feet - or rather, Mr Weasley stood and tried to support his wife; his arms around her as she cried quietly. Ginny was opposite George, gently brushing Fred's hair with her fingers as tears fell from her face onto his body. Harry stood behind her, taking small steps towards her. His hand stretched out towards her before he suddenly snatched it back. With a hard look on his face, Harry turned around and slipped away from the Weasley family and out the hall. Ron didn't notice, neither did George or Bill, or anyone. Ron almost left himself, almost forgot about to task ahead, finding the last horcrux and then... finally destroying the Dark Lord. Right now he was consumed by grief, sadness and a whole lot of anger. It coursed through every part of him. Ron Weasley wanted nothing more than to kill the Death Eater who had done this. Ginny bent her head down and planted a kiss on Fred's head. She then gripped Ron and George's hands and gave them a small squeeze. Ron looked at her and his lips twisted into something of a smile but George continued to cry the sound of it was a soft echo in the hall. "Ron?" Hermione asked weakly. His earlier anger dissolved completely as he turned to look at her. She looked so... defeated; her hair a mess and a few wisps coming out of the tight plait she had put it in before. Her face, like his, was streaked with dirt and ash and there was a small cut on her cheek. A painful tug on Ron's heart made him shut his eyes and look away. This could have been her, he realised. It could have been Hermione lying there on the hard floor of the hall, eyes dark and blank and skin ice cold. Ron... I'm so sorry - I'm so so so sorry...� she said softly, coming closer to him. Her voice cracked at the end with emotion. Tears blurred her vision as she lowered into a crouch beside him. Her hand found his immediately - he grabbed onto it tightly and then, her just being there... it was enough.

The pain in his heart lessened as she wiped the tears of his cheeks and faded to a dull ache as she took his other hand. "I think -" she coughed, "Harry's gone, Ron - I think he's gone to see him." There was panic etched on her face, her eyes were wide and pleading as she looked into his - in that look, she was asking him to wake up from his grief and remember the task they had. She was asking him to be brave. For her, he could. One last look at his brother, one last tear on his cheek and one last touch of his brother’s cold hand and he was ready. He let Hermione help him up, and then he looked at her. As he looked at her, that same realisation that any moment she could she could be dead hit him, as it had before. It knocked the air out of his lungs; it rushed out, and he blinked a few times. His vision blurred again, but then, suddenly, it was very clear. Impossibly, even covered in dirt, and tear streaked and, to be honest, a complete mess, he still thought she was beautiful. "Ron - we have to go," she said, biting her lip and pulling gently on his hand when he didn't move. She let go of his hand and started to walk out the hall, hoping he'd follow. Now or never, he thought, now or never. He could do it now and know or never, and go on, out into the war again, and possibly lose her and any chance of knowing would go with her. Ron knew then. He had to know. How could he not? His heart gave a hard thump; he swallowed the anxious lump in his throat. "Wait!" he called. She turned around - he almost backed out. He mentally gave himself a push and he rushed to her. Before she could open her mouth to say something, before he could talk himself out of it, before it was too late, he placed a hand on her cheek, another in her hair. He closed his eyes - and so did she - he bent his head slightly, and she tilted hers up. Their lips met; gently and timidly. It was a soft, innocent, comforting and just a little bit desperate. It made Ron's heart stop - just for a moment - and made Hermione's speed up. It lasted just a few seconds, but it was just right. It was what they needed: a confirmation of how they both felt, and it gave them just a little more strength to go and do what they had to. "Ron, I-" He placed a finger on her lips and looked down at her, "Later," he promised before placing another quick kiss on her lips, "come on - we have to get Harry." Her hand found his once again; he held it tightly and they smiled at each other, before rushing out the hall.
