Interview:

@Perseusly

@Perseusly is a Percy Jackson fan account ran by Deema and Maryam since January 2012. With over 5.2K followers they are one of the biggest PJO accounts around.

the first person I ever talked to about it. At the time being there were almost no Percy Jackson accounts so we both decided to make one together for the fun of it, and today she's my best friend.

M: At the time when Deema, the other owner, and I first started tweeting, there were barely any good Percy Jackson pages. The ones that were there either rarely tweeted or D: Like 2 or 3 years ago. they were in a foreign language. M: I first got into the series about Twitter's lack of a Percy Jackson February 2011. My brother actually fanpage drew me in, like, "Oh, introduced the books to me; he was a something needs to be done about huge fan before I was. The main this." I also felt Percy Jackson was reason I read them was because I heavily underrated on the Internet, really, really wanted to read which saddened me. It has mountains something. Anything. I remember of good quotes and funny moments looking at something written on the that everyone should appreciate. back of one of the covers, a quote Deema was a big part of me staying from a book critic or something, and it dedicated to the page. With her, said, "Riordan is the US Rowling." I tweeting was ten times more remember being like, "Pshh, no way." enjoyable. I think she was the first Now, Rick Riordan is my HANDSperson to start referring to Percy DOWN favourite author. Jackson fans as "demigods" too. When did you first get into Percy Jackson ?

Why did you decide to dedicate a Twitter account to Percy Jackson? D: I met this girl on twitter at the time that I was reading it and she was 4

D: I think they're both somewhat equal since they have the same author/subject and story line, but I liked PJO better because it was from Percy's POV and I got attached to that one first. M: Why are you making me choose? There is so much I want to say. If I absolutely had to pick one, I'd pick Heroes of Olympus because I felt like I personally knew the old characters like Percy and Annabeth, and it was also funnier. I had to wait for Son of Neptune and Mark of Athena, so the suspense basically kept me on my toes. Do you think the first film did the book justice? D: I think that a lot of important details were left out from the first film. I thought it was great and I loved it but it could've been better. Of course movies can't always be exactly like the books and we shouldn't compare them to each other but the book was definitely way better.

Do you prefer Percy Jackson and the M: NO. I am sorry, even though it has Olympians or the Heroes of Olympus a perfect cast, the way they twisted series? Or are they equal for you?

Favourite Percy Jackson book: D: Titan's Curse! M: Mark of Athena. All the funny bits, the inside jokes, the references? A+++ Favourite Percy Jackson ship: D: Percabeth! M: Percabeth is the otp of otps Favourite Percy Jackson character: D: This is so hard to choose but I'll go with Percy. M: Percy because I feel like I KNOW him, like he's my friend in real life. Favourite Percy Jackson cast member: D: Logan Lerman. M: UGH I CAN'T CHOOSE ok Logan the whole story line and excluded a lot of exciting things did horrible things to my fangirl heart. They destroyed Rick Riordan's well thought-out book! Isn't that kind of disrespectful to him? I didn't mind the age changes, and I wouldn't have minded if they had actually made an effort to stick more to the book. Are you looking forward to Sea of Monsters being released in cinemas later this year? D: YES! I have been waiting soooo long for this. I still remember when they first started shooting last year and the movie's going to make the fandom explode! M: YES YES YES OH MY GOD. The trailer looks SOOOO good. In fact, the Sea of Monsters trailer looks better than the whole Lightning Thief movie. Annabeth's hair and the Fleece and the Sarcophagus and Mr. D and Clarisse and everything I just

10 HARRY POTTER RELATED PLACES TO VISIT

10.GLENCOE, SCOTLAND Push further into Scotland to see Glencoe where the dramatic landscapes around Hogwarts were filmed. You'll recognise the Steall Falls at Glen Nevis from the Tri-Wizard Tournament in the Goblet of Fire. The rugged beauty and natural drama of the Scottish highlands are the perfect background for the first two Harry Potter films - where the Quidditch matches were filmed against the backdrop of Glen Nevis.

6

9. Gloucester Cathedral, England

8. Bodleian Library, Oxford, England

The Cathedral of Gloucester has been a place of worship for over 1,300 years. While you may not meet Nearly Headless Nick or Moaning Myrtle in these halls, an ancient wooden door leads down to the old crypt, said to be haunted by monks from the old Gloucester monastery. Scenes from the first two films were shot here including the shots of Harry and Ron hiding from the troll.

Oxford University’s famous Bodleian Library starred in three of the Harry Potter films. The medieval Duke Humfrey's Library was used as the Hogwarts library and the elaborately vaulted Divinity School became Hogwart’s infirmary. Tour this historic place of learning to see where Oscar Wilde, C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien once studied.

7. Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England Grab your broomstick and head to Alnwick Castle, the site of Madame Hooch’s flying lesson in the first film. Discover 700 years of history, spectacular gardens with water sculptures and one of the world’s largest treehouses.

6. Durham Cathedral, England Harry Potter was filmed in a bewildering number of locations throughout the UK. One of the most spectacular is Durham Cathedral, one of the UK’s finest Norman buildings. Durham’s elegant cloisters became the snowcovered quadrangle, where Harry sets the owl flying in the first film and is also the scene of Ron’s slug vomiting in the second. The cathedral chapter house is the venue for McGonagall’s class.

5. Leadenhall Market, London, England The entrance to the Leaky Cauldron, is an optician in Bull’s Head Passage in Leadenhall Market in the City of London. Leadenhall is a superb example of a Victorian covered market with an ornate painted roof.

2. King’s Cross Station, London, England 4. Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland

3. The Elephant House, Edinburgh, Scotland

On its way to Hogwarts in the Chamber of Secrets, the flying Ford Anglia lands on Glenfinnan Viaduct, on the West Highland line between Fort William and Mallaig in Scotland. There’s a regular diesel service, but if you want to cross the viaduct in a Hogwart's Express-style steam locomotive, West Coast Railways run the Jacobite Steam Trainduring the summer season (May to October).

One of the main places where the magic began, the Elephant House accomodated JK Rowling many a time as she sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle. The bathrooms are covered with messages to Jo, many of them thanking her. It also makes a nice break from the amount of walking up and down the steep hills in Edinburgh.

7

The Hogwarts Express departs from ‘Platform 9 ¾’ of King’s Cross Station, which is actually the arched wall between Platforms 4 and 5. If that seems short on magic, head towards the entrance to Platforms 9, 10 and 11 on the west side of the station. There you’ll find a trolley disappearing into the magical realm through a wall marked ‘Platform 9 ¾’. Outside you’ll see the Neo-Gothic facade of St Pancras where the Weasley's magical Ford Anglia takes off in the Chamber of Secrets.

1 Warner Bros studio tour, Leavesden Studios, Watford, England The must-go place to visit for any Potterhead. It creates a chance for the public to see the sets, the special effects, to go behind the scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, the tour provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. A truly magical place.

All the stars came out to watch the MTV Movie Awards on April 14th with host Rebel Wilson giving us plenty of hilarious moments to remember, with The Avengers and Silver Linings Playbook the big winners of the night. The night started out with Rebel Wilson ‘flying’ into the arena wearing her interpretation of an Iron Man suit, giving the night a dramatic start. Emerging from the suit wearing a koala onesie, she began singing ‘The Climb’ by Miley Cyrus before eventually taking part in a dance routine with some of her Pitch Perfect co-stars. On to the awards, and the biggest win of the night surely goes to The Avengers who won the Movie of the Year award, beating off competition from The Dark Knight Rises, Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained and Ted. Several of the cast were there to collect the award, including Samuel 10

L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki), who also picked up the award for Best Villain. As the top grossing film of 2012 it’s unsurprising that The Avengers were so successful, also picking up the Best Fight award on the night. Another big winner of the night was Silver Linings Playbook who, like The Avengers, picked up three awards. Bradley Cooper and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively and the pair also won Best Kiss. Jennifer Lawrence didn’t attend the awards due to

scheduling conflicts, leaving Cooper to accept the award on their behalf. Lawrence is set to reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen in Catching Fire later this year and it was left to Liam Hemsworth (Gale) to present the teaser trailer for the film with neither Lawrence nor Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) present at the awards. Pitch Perfect was also a big winner, taking away two awards including Best Breakthrough Performance

which went to host of the awards, Rebel Wilson. Their other award was for Best Musical Moment which saw them fight off fierce competition from Anne Hathaway in Les Mis as well as Silver Linings Playbook and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Other winners were Django Unchained, who won Best WTF Moment, with Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson on hand to accept the award. Jamie Foxx also won the MTV Generation Award for his wide range of roles, including an Oscar winning performance as blind musician Ray Charles in Ray. Will Ferrell won the Comedic Genius Award for his various roles in films such as Anchorman and Step-Brothers, accepting the award wearing a suit of money. Martin Freeman won Best Hero for his role as Bilbo Baggins in the first instalment of The Hobbit, thanks to the vast amount of fans that took to 11

Twitter in support, using the hashtag #VoteBilbo. Freeman is currently filming the third series of Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch who will appear in the next instalment of The Hobbit as the dragon Smaug. Taylor Lautner inevitably won the award for Best Shirtless Performance in Breaking Dawn Part 2’s only award nomination of the night, giving Twihards something to smile about. Life of Pi won the award for Best Scared-As-Sh*t Performance while Ted also picked up the award for Best On-Screen duo. While Perks didn’t win in any of the four categories it was nominated in, one member of the cast got special recognition. Emma Watson, best known for her role as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter, left fangirls/boys screaming after she picked up the second annual Trailblazer award,

Emma Stone winning it last year. She was presented with the award by My Week With Marilyn and Perks co-stars Eddie Redmayne and Logan Lerman, as well as receiving a video message from Jonah Hill who she will appear in This is the End with later this year. In her speech she commented on the state of her hair in the first Harry Potter film, causing Potterheads across the land to hyperventilate and take to Twitter and Tumblr with the caps lock button firmly pressed. It was a good year for fandoms at this year’s MTV Movie Awards, with a wide variety of films taking away awards. Hopefully next year will be just as exciting.

50th Anniversary Special

In honour of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and it’s special, we have gathered all your ideas and wonders of what could happen. Well, since now we know that Rose and Ten will be coming back (which I’m very excited about) for the episode, we’ll be on the other side, right? Could there possibly be more cracks in the universe, and the TARDIS slipped through? Unless Rose and Ten somehow got to our side, but why would they want to do that? Maybe the other side is in danger and they need The Doctor! Could it be the Cybermen? Or maybe something new! I’m very excited for this episode! @Kj_Laser_Lace

The Doctor and Clara fall in love, but the daleks bring Clara into the parallel universe, so he brings himself there to save her and then remembers Rose and flash backs over all the companions he has lost.

Eleven and Clara go to Hogwarts where they drink polyjuice potion to become Ten and Rose and they have a baby. @SublimePotter I think Clara's father is going to be a Timelord or something but fobwatched to be human and he doesn't know. @MudbludGranger

I think Rose is going to be some long lost relative or Clara's and there will be some big plot mystery to solve it all. @RobandMara69

Some kind of threat to the earth, a couple of bad guys and a couple of good guys and a hell of a lot of @MaudingRemus’s awesomeness xD mum @saltysummerday 16

The Doctor regenerates, daleks come back and there will be a really emotional moment where he has flashbacks of companions. @Romione69 I think that the parallel universe barrier will fall and they will find out that clara is a decedent of rose and 10 and that she is half time lord and all the aliens are trying to steal her. @MaraudingRemus

I think Clara has something to do with Rose though because there have been too many coincidences. Thedoctorinthe skywithdiamon ds.tumblr.com

The Doctor and Clara both regenerate into Rose and David Tennant. @Dobbys_Elves I think all the enemies The Doctor has ever faced are gonna come and the doctors gonna run away and let them fight each other. @prongsandthedoe

Top 3 ideas 3

dfgdClara can't die because she gdhas Time Lord DNA in her; she is ggThe Doctor’s granddaughter and then The Doctor tells her of his past companions and especially of Rose, then Clara gets shot by the bogey monster looking thing and uses her regeneration energy to break the seal between the gdggparallel universes.gdgg gdgg@MaraudingRemus’s sister. 17

1

I think that Clara gdgis someone from the gdDoctor's past and she's going to be a negative force but not by choice, I think something is manipulating them and she's going to do something awful and the gTARDIS knows and that's gdwhy the TARDIS hates her gdggso much. gdgg@potterandevans

2 I think something Clara related happens and it reminds the Doctor of Rose (maybe some other companions), while he was thinking about Rose something goes wrong, trouble with aliens and all through it he keeps getting flashbacks! @triwizardschamp

I ship Remus and Hermione.

I hate the idea of next gen. Their personalities match perfectly.

I think I’m a little too obsessed with Once Upon A Time.

18

I think I’m slowly falling in love with Plain White T’s.

I used to think ThatBravePotter was one of the coolest twitter accounts around.

19

I preferred it when Dan and Phil had less subscribers and weren’t as well known.

PAGE TO SCREEN This year is a major one in the fandom film industry as many books have been turned into films and are showing in cinemas this year. We have chosen five to go into more detail about, some of which are sequels and some of which are new to the screen. But will these five fantastic books turn into fantastic films, and live up to our expectations? The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (23rd August) By Saffy (@potterandevans) The flawless cast include Jamie Campbell-Bower, playing Jace Wayland, an a**hole-y but hot Shadowhunter. Lily Collins with the lead role is Jamie's on and off screen girlfriend, and looks kickass so far. On top of that, we have Kevin Zegers, Godfrey Gau, Robert Sheehan and Jemima West, who are all totally gorgeous, and I'm looking forward to seeing them act.

Catching Fire (22nd November) By Rae (@MaraudingRemus)

We see actors returning such as our stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. We also see new cast appear, as those who have read the books know that tributes from the past are discovered, including Finnick played by Sam Claflin who has appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean and Snow White and the Huntsman, alongside Kristen Stewart. We also see a new character named Johanna Mason appearing, who is being played by Jena Malone. Jena has been seen in films such as Pride and Prejudice and Sucker Punch.

“When her mom is attacked and taken from their home in New York by a demon, a teenage girl finds out about her past and changes her entire life.”

City of Bones, released on the 23rd August, is one of the most anticipated book-to-film adaptations this year. Cassandra Clare, the author, has been closely involved, so I am more excited than apprehensive to see what they do. The Sequel to The Hunger Games has arrived, and we are ready. The rebellion has begun, and the Districts have started to find hope thanks to Katniss, but what will Snow do to stop that and keep control? We watch as Katniss and Peeta go through a twist of unexpected events, whilst trying to keep their sanity and hold their heads high, as the fate of the Districts and the Hunger Games lies in their hands. What will become of the love triangle between Katniss, Gale and Peeta as their conditions worsen? We also meet someone very attractive named Finnick, but will he be of Katniss’ interest?

Beautiful Creatures (Out now) By Louise (@ColinMorgay)

The main character Ethan Wate is played by Alden Ehrenreich who has appeared in minor roles, including Supernatural. We see Lena, the mysterious girl played by Alice Englert, who has again only played in minor roles. Emma Thompson (who has been in films including Love Actually, Harry Potter and Nanny Mcphee) is seen in this film, playing a character named Mrs Lincoln.

This story is about a mysterious sophomore named Ethan Wate who has been having strange recurring dreams about a girl who he does not know. The next morning he wakes to the find a song named “Sixteen Moons” on his iPod, and the soothing smells of rosemary and lemon, the scents of the girl in his dream. Once he arrives at school he notices something peculiar – there is a new girl at school – the girl in his dreams. When driving home he notices Lena, and whilst remembering that she is the girl in his dreams, he finds out enchanting details about her.

book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Most Percy Jackson fans are very excited, not only because it is a film adaption but also from the stills from the filming; it seems as if the writers have made it at least a bit similar to the books. Annabeth is even blonde this time. However, we mustn’t keep our expectations too high, no film adaptation ever pleases all the fans.

Brendan, Eleanor, and Cordelia Walker once had everything: two loving parents, a beautiful house in San Francisco, and all the portable electronic devices they could want. But everything changed when Dr. Walker lost his job in the wake of a mysterious incident. Now in dire straits, the family must relocate to an old Victorian house that used to be the home of occult novelist Denver Kristoff—a house that feels simultaneously creepy and too good to be true. By the time the Walkers realize that one of their neighbours as sinister plans for them, they're banished to a primeval forest way off the grid. Their parents? Gone. Their friends? A world away. And they aren't alone. Bloodthirsty medieval warriors patrol the woods around them, supernatural pirates roam the neighbouring seas, and a power-hungry queen rules the land. To survive, the siblings will have to be braver than they ever thought possible—and fight against their darkest impulses. The key may lie in their own connection to the secret Kristoff legacy. But as they unravel that legacy, they'll discover it's not just their family that's in danger . . . it's the entire world.

ROLLING IN OUR LOVE JK Rowling is my role model as when things were at the worst they could possibly be in English society, she battled on and also fought depression just like I am doing. She made my childhood magical and gave me not just her as a role model but role models like Hermione, Ginny and Luna. "Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which rebuilt my life. Laura (@Laura_Chisnall) Taylor Swift, at age 23, is my main role model. All growing up she was bullied, but she managed to turn her hardship into amazing songs. Even now, at the height of fame, she is still bullied, mainly by conflicting fandoms, but she appears with a brave smile on her face. She still inspires thousands across the world and proves all her haters wrong when she wins countless awards including seven Grammys. Her song writing abilities are something few have and her lyrics comfort, entertain and help millions of people through their bad times. She teaches girls to be fearless, to speak now and to have a love which burns red. Eleanor (@prongsandthedoe)

From an early age Emma has enchanted us by bringing the role of Hermione Granger to life. Emma has been an ambassador in the past for two international charities supporting girls in poverty in Africa. Emma has become a fashion icon and has given out wise words of advice. She has proven to be an exceptionally brilliant actress by showing she has role-diversity. She has become a brilliant young woman, who sets a strong example through how she values education. Cameron @TheMapNeverLies 26

ROLLING IN OUR LOVE Demi Lovato is my role model for so many reasons. I've watched her grow up on the tv and become this beautiful and incredibly talented young woman. She's my role model because she's overcome everything she was going through to become a better and stronger person. Demi inspires me to be strong, even when I don't feel like I can. Nemi (@SwiftPotters) I think Evy's success against anorexia proves that she's someone who not only pursued her dreams by being involved with the Harry Potter films, but someone who kept on moving forward and refused to be beaten by her problems. We, as fans, can relate to her especially well; she has no qualms in saying that both Harry Potter and Jo had helped her in those difficult years. Many people are sceptical of the fact that books are a great source of help; my parents may not believe me when I say my books are my best friends, but I know that Evanna would understand. Saffy (@potterandevans)

Carrie Hope Fletcher's view on life is one of the main reasons she is my role model. She has taught me that things haven't always been this bad, therefore they won't always be this bad. She has made a name for herself outside of her brother's limelight and she's helped me to realise that I won't always be known as, simply, the younger sibling. She has taught me that romance is still out there, alive and kicking, and all I need to be is hopeful. Louise (@ColinMorgay) 27

ROLLING IN OUR LOVE Luna Lovegood is my role model. She doesn't care what other people think of her and I think a big part of becoming a better person is feeling comfortable in your own skin and being able to wear, act and look however you want. Also, she was in a completely different house to the main DA members yet she was as loyal as any of them. People insulted her and took her things because they saw her as weird but she didn't let it dampen her spirit. She was strong (losing her mum at 9) and a true hero, her trust never quavered. Laura (@sublimepotter)

I picked Robert Downey Jr. for the person who inspires me because he has gone through many tough times, such as drug related incidents, but he got past that. Now he is one of the most famous actors in the world, has had brilliant roles and is an incredible, funny and brilliant person. He has million of fans who adore him and is probably one of the best actors of this generation. I find him extremely inspiring for anyone who has problems with drugs or alcohol, or even just an aspiring actor/actress! Cian (@triwizardschamp)

To me, Daniel Radcliffe is a great role model. And that’s not just because he was the main character in the biggest film franchise of all time. He admitted to having problem with alcohol, and that he’d turn up to the Harry Potter set drunk. But what makes him a great role model — for me, at least — is that he dealt with his problem, and he beat it. Dan teaches us that we should confront our problems, and then work to stop them being problems. Ethan (@Pottercrux) 28

ROLLING IN OUR LOVE Chris Colfer is a two time Emmy nominated, Golden Globe winning actor. He's a New York Times Best Selling Author, a producer of his own movie which he also wrote, starred in and turned into a novel. He was one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People and adopted a rescue cat, Brian. Chris is incredibly brave and proud, despite the fact that he was bullied for being openly gay in high school. He manages to act and sing on Glee, find time to write novels, interact with his fans AND be charming, witty and gorgeous. Chris is truly inspirational. Emily (@TwerkingKlaine) The werewolf, marauder, and brave soul: Remus Lupin a.k.a my role-model. Not a conventional choice of person to look up to, but I have my reasons. For one, Remus was a brave and intelligent person, but most of all he was a truly loyal friend. To outsiders, Remus may look like a scruffily dressed fool. But really he was, well… a Gryffindor. This is down to the fact that he was bitten at such a young age, diseased and shunned from society. Yet he didn’t let that stop him; he continued to adapt his lifestyle and grew to be a father anyone would be proud of. I admire him and the way he is an amazing wizard, a loyal friend, and a calming mentor, yet he does all this whilst still being deemed as a “filthy halfbreed”. Lupin is truly a very strong character and someone that is easily called a role-model. Em (@PotterMeUp)

Hermione is a great role model for people nowadays because she's shows that life isn't all about looks and boys, you can love school and studying and that you should aim for a good job in life. She also shows that your upbringing doesn't define whom you turn out to be. She was a muggle born who didn't know anything about wizards until she got her letter but she still turned out to be the brightest witch of her age. If you want to succeed in life, then all you have to do is believe in yourself and girls should look up to Hermione for being brave and smart, not to 'celebrities' who are seen in clubs in the early hours of the morning. Imagine Dragons ‘Night Visions’ Tour By Imi (@saltysummerday) On 2nd April 2013, Imagine Dragons kicked off their European Tour for their debut album ‘Night Visions’ in the O2 Academy, Bristol and I was lucky enough to attend. I first heard of Imagine Dragons from Tazi (katnips), a girl I follow on tumblr, but I didn’t hear a song by them until I saw a Delena (The Vampire Diaries) fanvid on YouTube which feature the song ‘Demons’. After that, I ended up getting their whole discography and loving them all. Their Indie Rock sound isn’t one I usually listen to, as I’m more of a fan of pop punk bands, such as All Time Low, Paramore and so on but I grew fond of their songs, especially ‘Radioactive’ and ‘Bleeding Out’. When I heard they were playing so close to where I live, I made sure I had someone to go with and that person came in the form of my oldest friend, Katie, who I took as a birthday present as it was her 18th a week later. Katie and I arrived at the venue just as the warm up act were ending but still managed to get a relatively good view from the balconied area just in front of the bar. The guys kicked off the show with ‘Round and Round’ and the crowd got going pretty quickly. The energy coming from frontman Dan Reynolds’ drum-banging, head-swinging and running on the spot really maximised the energy of the crowd and made the atmosphere thoroughly enjoyable. The set continued, including songs such as ‘Amsterdam’, ‘Tiptoe’ and ‘Hear Me’, with an echo of every word coming from the audience and soon Reynolds says, “I don’t even know how you know who we are”. His humble astonishment at the fact that almost all of the audience knew the lyrics is something I will always remember; he was extremely adorable. The whole rooms inhaled simultaneously in ‘Radioactive’ as the bass rocks the room and the fantastic lighting just adds to the atmosphere. The drum interlude midway through (in which Dan manages to tear a huge hole in the bass drum) kills the crowd and builds up to a climax before dropping back into the chorus for which Imagine Dragons are most famous. I’d said to Katie repeatedly that if they played ‘Bleeding Out’ it would make my night. I wasn’t entirely sure if they would as it was one of their lesser known but as soon as Dan belted out the opening line, a huge smile spread across my face as I screamed and began to join in. That was quickly followed by another one of my favorites, ‘Demons’. The bright and cheery melodies of ‘On Top of the World’ and ‘It’s Time’ left the crowd on a high as the band left the stage but were quickly brought back by the shouts of “WE WANT MORE” and “ENCORE”. The set concluded with ‘Nothing Left To Say’ and cheers, screams and applause from everyone who attended. The broken drum

The concert was fantastic, the energy of both the band and audience was sky high and the atmosphere was great. As Katie and I travelled back to mine, she said it was the best birthday present ever and although most people say that about gifts, I truly think she meant it. I would highly recommend seeing Imagine Dragons in concert if you get the opportunity as I know I would go again if I had the chance and money, as I’m sure they won’t be playing gigs for £11 for much longer. 32

NIALL HOREN’S NEW TEETH April 3rd 2013 seemed to be history in the making: one of the One Direction heartthrobs took one of his final trips to the orthodontist. He was thrilled to have his braces taken off that day, keeping his twitter followers of over 10 million up to date. The world was first aware of the exact date they were coming off when he tweeted on the 3rd “Morning. ! This is it ! I'm goin to the dentist! I think this is my last hour with braces! Oh how I'm gona miss them ! Naaaaaaat !” As Niall left his London orthodontist later on, he decided to give the press and fans a first look at his new teeth. He posed through the window of his black Range Rover, until he finally wound down the window and showed off his beautiful new teeth with the rest of his face on show too. Later that day he posted another tweet to the world, a picture of his teeth before and after his braces, with the caption “Before and after !” What do you think of his new look? Here are some tweets from you. “@adelfedemaison: It doesn't change who he is inside. I'm not really a directionner but I like them, and I think his teeth don't matter” “@narrywatons: if he gets any hotter- I will have a meltdown and a cardiac arrest” “@kingprongs: His new teeth look good but it doesn't change who he is! I think his crooked teeth were fine, it's all because of the media” “@Nerdybitch_: before I couldn't see why he needed braces, but there's really a big difference! It suits him" 33

ALBUM AND SONG REVIEW This month’s album review is on the highly anticipated 5th album "Save Rock And Roll" by Fall Out Boy after their four year hiatus. My favourite song[s] from this album would be Alone Together and Phoenix. They both have an edge to them that makes them catchy and totally unforgettable. Now I wouldn't say I have a song I don't like on this album, but I do have a song that I would probably skip past to get to the other songs and that is Young Volcanoes. Don't get me wrong, I

Save Rock and Roll features guest vocals from Foxes, Big Sean, Courtney Love and Elton John.

do like the song, but I do prefer all the others to this one. Overall , I would probably give this album 10/10 and it is a great album to use when coming back from a four-year break.

Now, this month’s song review is on Ariana Grande's second single "The Way" feat. Mac Miller. Ariana Grande starred on the show Victorious until 2012 when the show ended, but is now currently filming a new spin-off series Sam & Cat alongside iCarly's Jennette McCurdy. "The Way" went straight to number one on the first day of release but dropped to 10 in the USA. It also peaked at number 41 in the UK. Ariana's single "The Way" is completely different to her previous single "Put Your Hearts Up" released back in 2011. 36

I would give this song a 8/10 because it is catchy and even if you're not a fan of Ariana her angelic voice always draws you in.

MUSIC NEWS This month Selena Gomez announced her worldwide tour as well as releasing her new single "Come And Get It" which charted at number 22 in the USA. Her worldwide tour, named "Stars Dance Tour 2013", starts in Vancouver on the 14/08/2013. Taylor Swift is also set to announce the European and Australian tour dates of the RED tour in a few weeks time. After America, it is believed that she will go to Australia, then Europe. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Justin Bieber is set to release new songs that he has been writing down in his music journal. In recent tweets he has been tweeting about the songs with the hashtag #musicjournal. No one is quite sure when these songs will be released but Justin’s manager Scooter Braun told the media:

Well I don’t ever disclose what our plans are, but I will say this: he’s been writing one to two songs a day for the entire tour and he actually labels them by the city he writes them in. We started calling it his ‘music journal’ and we’re talking about what should come next musically. And I think creatively he just wants to share all his thoughts through music.

Paramore is the self-titled fourth album from the Tennessee pop rockers. The Grammy-nominated album was sitting at number one on the first week of release on the US Billboard Top 200 after knocking Justin Timberlake off the top spot. 37

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in a trilogy called The Chaos Walking. It's a very compelling and intense start to the story which sets the scene for the next two books. It's by far one of my favourite series (and that's saying rather a lot considering the extent of literature I have enjoyed). It's one of those rare trilogies that doesn’t turn out to be disappointing when you reach the last book. It makes you laugh out loud, cry, bite your lips in agony and make your heart race in anticipation and suspense. Once I accepted the eccentricities of this novel I found it to be a brilliant, yet dark, read. It's a sci-fi, dystopian novel and yet nothing seems too contrived or unreal. It's a genuinely moving tale of coming of age and growing up, the loss of innocence and naivety that we all have as small children. In fact, one of the strengths of this book is the questions it can raise about morality, ethics, and the heart of humanity. The ideas are deep, mirroring the history of previous settlements formed amongst new cultures, the writing is both simple and sophisticated and the plot is both tightly knit and creative. Anyone who likes a dark read with uplifting aspects will definitely enjoy it. There are no females left alive. They all perished from the "Noise" germ, which causes everyone's thoughts, secrets, emotions and memories to be heard in a huge blur of noise and chaos. Todd is the last boy in Prentisstown, but on the verge of manhood. While out on a walk with his dog, Manchee, Todd encounters a break in the Noise, a pocket of silence. But this is impossible, everyone has told him so. When Todd and Manchee return home, their Noise reveals what happened in the swamp, the two of them have to run away from the only home he’s ever known. As Todd flees for his life, he encounters a girl, Viola, and everything he’s ever known about the world is changed in an instant. The men of Prentisstown are harbouring a terrible secret and will stop at nothing to get Todd back. I loved every minute of it, and could empathise very strongly with both Todd and Viola. It took me a few pages to get used to Todd’s language, which reveals his innocence and lack of education. At the same time, he is a very well-developed character, with strong sensibilities, hope, and a will to survive. From the start, Viola and Todd are bonded together in a quest for freedom and survival. Since Viola doesn’t have any Noise, she is shrouded in silence. It takes a little longer for Todd to get to know her, but he eventually does and is able to "read" her thoughts. The development of Todd and Viola’s relationship is my favourite part of this story. It forced me to release certain conceptions of how a book must be written. Due to its unorthodox use of grammar and various fonts and forms evident in speech, I had to adjust for the first few chapters before being able to immerse myself in Patrick Ness's work. This may prove a problem for some, though. In addition, the lack of romance could be disappointing. The only problem I have is that there are scenes wherein the action is nonstop, which means it can be dizzying to absorb all of this new information and keep up with the events. Then, there are other scenes in which nothing seems to happen, which are very slow to get through. 39
