Six Corners Roundabout Springfield, MA
2021 ACEC-MA Engineering Excellence Award
• Intersection improvements to the Six Corners neighborhood in the heart of Springfield helped alleviate long delays, unsafe pedestrian accommodations, and high accident rates. • Fuss & O’Neill worked with the City to develop a series of potential roundabout design options for the intersection. • The design improved traffic circulation and safety, while creating a public space that connected the neighborhood.
Beehive Bridge New Britain, CT
2021 American Architecture Award
• Fuss & O’Neill was selected to design a signature structure on the Main Street overpass on Route 72 at the new CTfastrak station in New Britain. • This project transformed the pedestrian and bicycle conditions connecting the downtown area to the CTfastrak station and Broad Street neighborhood through innovative public art, complete streets, and streetscape designs. • The unique beehive design was inspired by a honeycomb form and anchored by whimsical bees.
Connecticut State Office Building Renovation Hartford, CT
ENR Best Project Award
• Extensive redevelopment included the complete interior renovation of the existing 321,493 ft2 building, the restoration of the building exterior, renovation of the central exterior courtyard, and reconfiguration of the existing building entrances. • This demolition of an existing parking garage made way for the construction of a new 900-car parking structure to support the redeveloped state office building. • Fuss & O’Neill provided transportation, site/civil, landscape architectural, planning, survey, and environmental services.
Lexington Fire Headquarters Lexington, MA
2021 Gold Award from Firehouse
• Fuss & O’Neill provided the civil engineering, landscape architecture, traffic engineering, and wetland services for the planning and design phases of the new Lexington Fire Station Headquarters. • Our team provided upgrades to the local traffic signal and emergency system to the Fire Station. • The project included a complex stormwater management system that was designed to mimic historic, pre-development conditions. • More than 3,000 tons of soil containing petroleum, lead, and asbestos were removed from the site and safely disposed of.
Boxers Square Stamford, CT
2021 ACEC-CT Merit Award
• The project improved transportation options and created a safe, pedestrian-friendly, community space in the historic Boxer Square intersection in Stamford, CT. • Improved the existing lane arrangements, reduced the overall size of the intersection, eliminated the median island, relocated Boxer Square statue, provided an eastbound bike lane on Stillwater Avenue to Smith Street and increased the size of Boxer Square Park. • Installed ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and drainage modifications. • Fuss & O’Neill provided complete streets design, landscape architecture, roadway design, and construction administration.
TRU by Hilton Hotel Manchester, NH
2021 ACEC-NH Honor Award
• The TRU by Hilton hotel features a four-story hotel with 126 guest rooms, ample parking, sparkling amenities, and will eventually house a cafe, a sit-down restaurant, and additional retail space. • Site challenges for this urban development included navigating existing underground utilities and structures, siting and building on a severely sloped property, and preserving and expanding parking for the hotel and surrounding areas. • We designed multi-level sidewalks, ramps, and stairs to provide easy access to all areas for pedestrians, as well as a parking deck that maximized the space and added to existing parking inventory.
US Route 7 Reconstruction Segment 6 Brandon, VT
2021 ACEC-VT Grand Award
• What began as one section of a corridor safety improvement project turned into a $22-million construction project; one of the largest, most complex roadway reconstruction projects in recent memory throughout the State of Vermont. • Fuss & O’Neill designed the replacement or restoration of curb, sidewalk, closed system drainage and signs, as well as two new signalized intersections and new turn lanes at intersecting streets. • A poor curve and a history of accidents led to relocating US 7, which allowed for a new off-alignment parking lot between the storefronts and Green, improving motorist and pedestrian safety.
