Welcome from the Chairs Eric Wu Chair of FanimeCon 2018

Welcome to FanimeCon 2018! This year we will be celebrating our 24th year of providing programming envisioned, planned, executed, and enjoyed by fans. I along with the convention Vice-Chairs, Claudia and Evan, are excited to present this year’s theme “Gaming!” This theme spawns from deep roots. When FanimeCon started, the smartphone was merely an idea on some sci-fi show and far from the powerful gaming device that today never leaves our sides. Pokémon cards may have been a few years away, but back in 1994, Magic: The Gathering decks filled our bags ready to Fireball any foe or Mana Drain an opponents’ “clever” spells. Gaming was and is an ubiquitous part of our lives and we look forward to celebrating that this year! We hope that this year’s programming will not only bring back that nostalgia, but entertain you and create a special place. We will be bringing our headline events back like MusicFest, the Masquerade, and the Black & White Ball. In addition to having the “Gaming” theme flowing throughout our programming, we have leveled up our gaming offerings both in the Convention Center and in the DoubleTree hotel site. Our staff have worked hard to lay the groundwork and we look forward to making this another unforgettable experience together. Speaking of the DoubleTree, we bid a fond farewell to Clockwork Alchemy, our sister steampunk convention, which has moved to another weekend and location. With that move, this kicks off a new era of opportunity as we provide more programming in this space. Our community is always evolving and we look forward to providing more ways of serving and celebrating the fandoms we all enjoy so much. I know the FanimeCon Staff all have a cherished place in their hearts for this Convention. I deeply thank each and every one of our 1,000+ FanimeCon Staffers. I look at the community we are a part of and marvel at how this is a place built by Fans. It is because of this great event that I have the opportunity to hang out with those that I share the same passions with. What I enjoy most of all is seeing you, the Fans, enjoy

2

By Fans, For Fans

FanimeCon. Your energy and passion is what drives us as staff, so please let the staff know by talking with us, playing with us, and maybe one day creating with us by joining staff. This is a special place, and I look forward to joining you and fellow staff members in this fleeting wonderland that pops up every Memorial Day Weekend. See you on the Concourse!

Claudia Tseng Vice-Chair of FanimeCon 2018

1994 was a fairly big year in gaming. Sony released the Playstation. Nintendo released SUper Metroid and, my personal favorite, Megaman X. There was also a small company named Silicon and Synapse that renamed themselves Blizzard Entertainment. They then released Warcraft: Orcs and HUmans. Warcraft became their breakout hit and spawneD a series of sequels and franchise games. Starcraft and WorlD of Warcraft are still played by many to this day. Also in 1994 a group of anime cLubs organized a Rebirth of their annuaL gatheRing and called it FanimeCon. From a gathering of 200 people at CSU Hayward, we grew into a con in San Jose that over 30,000 people enjoy today. What had started as a few viewing rooms Became the vast array of programming supported Across 83 departments. For 24 years and counting we have added new programming in our remodeled Gaming Hall and our new offerings at the DoubleTree. To the returning attendees: I hope that you continue to enjoy FanimeCon this year; especially our new offerings in the Gaming Hall and the DoubleTree. To the new attendees: welcome and press START to have a blast!

Evan James IV Vice-Chair of FanimeCon 2018

Game on! At FanimeCon, we play to win when it comes to creating a truly amazing experience for our staff and attendees. And for this year, we are truly stepping up our game with a renewed surge of passion for our gaming offerings. From our revamped Gaming Hall to our expanded adult gaming, now at the DoubleTree, this year sets the tone for the coming years as we invest further and further into the gaming aspects of our fandom.

Art by Elda The

Anime in recent years is flushed with gaming inspirations: Sword Art Online, Gamers!, No Game No Life, Log Horizon, Summer Wars, BTOOOM!, Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody, And You Thought There is Never A Girl Online, New Game!, Recovery of an MMO Junkie, and Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions to name only a few. With so many titles, it only made sense for us to highlight this aspect of our fandom, not due to just its popularity, but more so for the message that most of these shows embrace: that games are best when played together. I have always been so proud of our fan community, for working towards the goal of keeping things safe, fun, and about building something greater as a whole. Where we want to be the very best, like no other convention before... because with FanimeCon, it’s you and me, you could say it’s even our destiny... every challenge along the way, with courage we will face. Let’s do it all! FanimeCon!

CSI

Convention Safety Initiative

Over the years, FanimeCon has grown substantially from small anime club roots to one of the largest anime cons in North America. Along the way, we’ve experienced growing pains like any other convention or event. The staff of FanimeCon has worked diligently to always provide a safe and welcoming environment for all our attendees. So, in the interest of further promoting safety for the FanimeCon community, access to the second floor of the convention will require a FanimeCon Badge. New for 2018 is that the first floor will also require a FanimeCon Badge overnight between the hours of 8:00 pm to 5:00 pm. These traffic and access changes will still be new to many of our attendees, but we kindly request your continued patience and wholeheartedly welcome any and all feedback as we continue to develop and implement this initiative. Our primary goal has always been and will continue to be to facilitate as safe an environment as possible. With the CSI, we hope to work towards continuing and improving on that mission. So again, thank you all, and we hope you have an amazing and safe time at FanimeCon!

From the wooden toys he bought at the corner store, to sharing Botan candy with friends, and eating curry made with S&B curry powder. He had no idea that any of it was from Japan. He became a fan of world cinema in high school, and in college this led him to explore what little was known in English about anime. In 1990 he received a phone call from a friend who had discovered a new student club at U.C. Berkeley devoted to anime—Cal Animage Alpha—and began attending their meetings. He was hooked.

Essentials Lost & Found

Convention Etiquette

Parent Lounge

Lost & Found is just that — where to go to either look for, or turn in, a lost precious. If you’ve found someone’s lost precious, please bring it to us and we’ll hold it. If you’ve lost your precious, come by and describe it to us – hopefully someone else has already given it to us.

Photographs

Hilton – Winchester Room Exhausted from venturing through the hustle and bustle of the convention? Not really sure about this whole FanimeCon thing your kids have dragged you to? Consider taking a load off at our pleasant Parent Lounge!

NOTE: Please be patient when trying to track down something you’ve lost. Many people who find a lost item or badge turn it in when they have a chance, which is not always right when they find it or when you lost it. All Lost & Found items are held for a three-month period after the convention, when they are then turned over to the convention. To contact Lost & Found after the convention, email lost@fanime.com. Do not email during the run of the convention; it will not be received.

Everyone enjoys photos at a convention, but no one appreciates having their picture taken by surprise! Ask permission beforehand to ensure the highest quality photographs. Remember to be considerate and never block traffic. Convention traffic is a terrible background, and it’s hard to take a nice shot when people walk into your photo, or bump into you or your subject. Keep FanimeCon safe and take wonderful pictures!

Autographs

Every year, FanimeCon hosts Guests of Honor and every year FanimeCon attendees wish to obtain their autographs. That’s why FanimeCon has designated a special area for you to gain those cherished memories. The schedule (found online and in your pocket guide!) will have the times and places where our Guests of Honor will sign autographs, so be sure to check it when planning your FanimeCon experience. Remember, these people are our guests and should be treated with respect. Kindness and smiles go a long way! Have fun and enjoy your time with this year’s Guests of Honor!

This is a place for parents to kick back without worrying over accidentally walking through a photo shoot or tripping over someone’s prop. Relax and take a breather at the Parent Lounge before going out to explore the rest of FanimeCon!

New Mom Rooms Hilton – Second Floor We have set aside rooms for new mothers to make use of during the convention. Anime Anarchy

Too extreme for the light of day! Late at night, after all the little chibi have gone to bed, sleepless hoards of worldly adults seek the most outrageous comedy, ghastly horror, and savage action. We have prepared a collection of programming sure to please even the most demanding of connoisseurs! Those seeking this edgy entertainment can find our calloused coliseum of cartoon chaos, an unflinching bombardment of violence, profanity, nudity, and other mature content to challenge even the most hardened old-school otaku.

Midnight Madness

Some otaku hear voices… Voices that say something completely different… Sometimes, they do what the voices say… Welcome to the twisted bizarro-world of fan-made parodies: an altered state in which pimps orchestrate Armageddon by pop music, dwarves sell life insurance to witches, and ninjas do “the Macarena.” Can you stand the shocking goof that is

Hentai Nights 18+ Now 2 Rooms! Hot, sweaty bodies, heavy breathing, and pounding heartbeats — and that’s just the audience! Oh my! Three scintillating nights of sexy shoujo in sizzling sapphic, sadomasochistic, surreal, and simply silly smut from the midnight moon to the rising sun. Imported from the land of the most exotic and imaginative erotica in the world.

Hentai Music Video Awards 18+

Do you like hentai? Do you like music videos? If so, it’s that time again! Come to the Hentai Music Videos Competition and Exhibition! Watch as videos battle for prizes as you, the audience, decide who wins! After the entries for this year are shown and winners are decided, stick around for more Hentai Music Videos! Laughs will be had, hentai will be shown, and you’ll never listen to the Inspector Gadget theme the same way again!

FanimeCon Presents Hot Yaoi Nights 18+

It’s raining bishonen! Three naughty nights of adult anime and live events dedicated to men who love men, and the fans who love to watch them love each other. Usually written by and for straight women (and oft appreciated by gay men) YAOI is known for emotionally complex storytelling akin to romance novels, with a delicious whipped-cream dollop of male bonding on top. You know you’re curious… YAOI [n. ya-oh-ee] acronym for: “YAma nashi, Ochi nashi, Imi nashi” and “Yamete! Atashi no Oshiri Itai!” A self-deprecating genre label for homoerotic manga and anime. Some prefer the more humorously descriptive alternative: “Yamete! Atashi no Oshiri Itaii!”

Hentai Room Rules and Admittance Must be 18 and over with valid government I.D.

• Due to the immense popularity of Hentai and Yaoi Nights programming, Video Programming will begin issuing tickets for the first two hours of the events. • General admittance of those without tickets will begin after 2:00 am, if space is available. • Attendees may pick up a single ticket for Hentai and Yaoi Nights at the Video Programming table in front of the Marathon Room at 10:00 pm on a first come, first serve basis. • The ticket is valid only for the night it is issued and must be retained for reentry into the event during the Midnight to 2:00 am timeslot. • Seating will begin at 11:30 pm. • Hentai and Yaoi Nights programming will start at midnight. • General admittance will start after 2:00 am, if space is available. • Attendees are not allowed to film or take pictures.
