Project 1 / 9 The Book of Trump

Every day, we are encountered with new experiences. Every day, we are faced with the decisions of what we can and what will do about them. We could sit there, do nothing, and let the events of the world pass us by. Or we can decide to get up and do something. To me, design is a vehicle for making changes. Just as a microphone is a vehicle for a message. When my days unfold before me, I’m choosing to utilize design to do something.

What do we do when your party is boring? Each election cycle, we hope for change. We hope our newly elected representatives will deliver on their promises. We hope that new policies will finally be able to fix our broken educational system. We hope that our 200year old system of democracy is actually the one that will solve all of civilization’s problems. PROJECT NAME

OBJECTIVE

Revitalize a dead, dying, or defunct brand. Give it a new life and expand it into other sectors. APPROACH

I revitalized the Green Party US because it is a stagnant political party with a great mission. I developed a new visual system that was true to their original values and renamed the organization to Green in order to allow it to expand their audience base and move into other sectors in the areas of government, business, and education.

OBJECTIVE

Turn a This American Life episode into a book. Be intentional about how and how much the designer’s voice is expressed in the design. APPROACH

I selected Episode 578 where the nation’s perception of Donald Trump was examined. My interpretation of the episode was that all people had an opinion of Trump and he was a controversial topic, much like that of religion. Thus, I antithetically explored the concept of making this book into a satirical religious text about Donald Trump.

Roger & Me was the first and most authentic documentary of politically controversial director, Michael Moore. A poor working class man trying to expose the biggest perpetrators that keeps people down in our society—capitalism and government. I chose to build the visual system off of the concept of “fighting the system”. The extemporaneous visuals are inspired by materials and aesthetics found on the streets of a political protest.

PRO-LIFE

The value in individuality and independence is greater. The pro-choice stance values the women individuality and her ability to make her own choices.

Stronger sense of community. The pro-life stance trusts the potential in an unborn child and that people have the ability to raise a baby within the community.

Greater trust in institutional science, hence a trust in medicine and these practices.

Supported by local churches, a place where many gatherings would occur, the Catholic church states that “human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception.” As devout community members and church goers, this is the moral thing to do.

High density invites anonymity and the privacy of abortions, hence more accessibility

Life is valuable. But amongst the topic of abortion, when life or personhood begins is a hot topic of debate. For many people, personhood begins at conception (Week 0), and for others, it may begin at particular stages of development. Roe v. Wade (1973) protects a woman’s right to an abortion prior to the viability of the fetus, attributing the Fourteenth Amendment, which grants a woman’s right to privacy. As the fetus becomes more viable in the second trimester, the state’s interest increases. By the third trimester, it is illegal to have an abortion unless the woman’s life is at risk. Both fortunately and unfortunately, the Constitution does not define personhood.

NATURAL EARTH CYCLES

Vehicles are one of the largest sources of diesel combustion’s contribution to air pollution. These are daily visceral reminders of a toxic environment.

Science shows that it’s natural for the earth to go through warm periods and cold periods. People are also more likely to know how the seasons work and how they can fluctuate.

People create waste, be it trash or poop. The sight of overfilled dumpsters and the smell of sewage is a result of high density.

Human impact is so minuscule. The world is enormous and humans can only take up so much space—not enough to cause our own extinction.

Scientists have reported an increase in global temperature at alarming rates. By city menality, global warming is happening now and something needs to be done quick.

Plus, the idea of global warming will occur too far in the future. By then, if it does become threatening, human advances will have figured out a way to survive.

In the corporate world, money is the main motivation for productivity and thus, people will screw other people over. And those who get screwed over, believe that maybe the “system” is working against them.

Working hard and tending to crops or animals is often rewarded with generous yields. If people work hard, things will pay off in the end. It’s called personal responsibility and accountability.

City centers tend to have more homeless people because of the availability of transportation and close-by amenities. Beggars also appear where there are more people and more opportunities to make ends meet..

The question is in what method can we help and what is the best and most effective way to help somebody? Is giving them some money, some shelter, and some food, enough to get them back on their feet? What do we do when marginalized communities don’t have access to the outdoors? The wilderness is an incredible space that provides the invisible benefit of clarity and awe. However, low income urban communities have long lacked access to these benefits. What if we could provide these opportunities? PROJECT NAME

PROBLEM

In 2015, The National Park Services had 307 million visitors. But, less than 20% of them were people of color. The U.S. Forest Services conducted a study on groups of Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and African Americans about their lack of experiences with the outdoors. Many cited a lack of transportation, lack of experience or knowledge, and costs.

APPROACH

I aimed to solve this problem through a design approach: extensive research, a distillation of information into insights, strategy development, and design solutions communicated through a comprehensive system. The result of this exploration is showcased through my MFA thesis titled Mt. Near.
