A Trend-Setting Pool for a Record-Breaking Program
Carmel High School is home to one of the most successful swimming programs in the United States.
As of 2021, Carmel’s varsity Girls team has won 35 straight state championships, and its Boys team has won 7 straight state titles.
The design of a new 50-meter natatorium, in concert with renovations to the school’s existing 50-meter natatorium, will help Carmel keep its top-tier status for years to come.
This expansion more than doubles the available water surface for swimming programs that continue to grow in the Carmel community, and a new sports entrance acts as a gateway to events in the natatorium, the field house and the main gymnasium.
POOL FEATURES:
• Addition of a second 50-meter natatorium and renovation of the existing natatorium
• New natatorium is 50 meter by 25 meter stretch pool
• Includes a fully-recessed gutter and a flat pool floor with 8’ depth
• Separate diving well
• Separate hydrotherapy pool
The competition pool is designed to serve the needs of Carmel’s record-breaking swim program. A fully recessed gutter, a flat pool floor with 8 foot depth exceeding FINA and USA Swimming standards for entry safety, 25 meter width and cooler water temperature ensure that this will be one of the fastest pools in the nation. High performance filtration and controls promote a healthy environment for occupants.
COST-EFFECTIVE DESIGN
• To save on costs, the ceiling is comprised of segmented acoustical panels that give the look and feel of a barrel-vaulted roof.
Promoting a Better and Safer Swim Experience
In addition to the main pool, the natatorium includes a zero-depth therapy pool for athletes, students and the school’s special education program.
The pool has built-in seating and a ramp for zero-depth entry. The pool will expand special needs access to hydrotherapy and swim lessons.
To support physical education, the pool includes a classroom located just off the main deck. The classroom has a floor-to-ceiling glass wall with direct views of the pool. The room will be used for instruction and as hospitality room during swim meets.
The natatorium also includes a separate diving well, which allows multiple swim meet events to occur simultaneously.
Spectator viewing areas and the use of glass in main corridors create a vibrant spectator experience.
