Interior Design Fanning Howey’s interior design team has built a reputation for innovation. We place an emphasis on creating spaces that foster collaboration, real world experiences and project-based learning. Engineering Our engineers use an integrated approach to address all aspects of smarter places for learning. We provide in-house services for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, technology design, fire protection design, plumbing design and energy management. We are intently focused on the quality and comfort of the learning environments we design, including lighting, power, technology, ventilation, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Integrated Services Landscape Architecture Through landscape architecture, we focus on making every part of a site a tool for teaching and learning. We leverage the value in the design of soft and hardscapes to create attractive outdoor environments that serve both formal and informal educational uses. We also offer a depth of knowledge in athletic facilities, including sports fields, tracks and artificial turf surfaces. Through an integrated approach with our team members, we address sustainability issues and limit the environmental impact of learning environments.
Construction Administration Our construction administration team is made up of construction professionals who know how to get things done. Our in-house construction administrators give our clients a constant advocate throughout the construction process. Our smarter approach to design includes construction administration input during the Construction Documents phase. This results in more accurate and coordinated documents that deliver more competitive pricing, fewer change orders and greater value for our clients.
Security Consulting With three Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design-certified staff members, Fanning Howey is able to advise on a wide range of school security issues. Our work with the Department of Defense Education Activity brings additional insights and value.
Visioning / Educational Commissioning Fanning Howey has teamed with Emmy Beeson of Partnerships for Authentic Learning to provide additional services for our clients. This non-profit group consists of a team of educators who work with school districts to customize creative, inspiring, relationship-driven programming for students. They provide visioning services to staff and the community as needed. They also provide support for the staff as the buildings are designed and completed to ensure their needs are met, and the staff is equipped to enhance the learning process. Partnerships for Authentic Leadership and Learning are currently collaborating with Fanning Howey on work for seven school districts throughout the Midwest.

Elementary Schools Fanning Howey designs elementary schools to build future-ready skills. An updated elementary school prototype gives Zionsville students and educators a smarter place for learning. Fanning Howey collaborated with Zionsville educators to update an elementary school prototype last built for the district in 2007. Design strategies reimagine the entrance, giving the school its own identity. Prototype upgrades improve technology for 21st century learning, create additional large group rooms and provide more efficient workspace for teachers. The design team master planned the site to support the new elementary school and another academic building in the future.

The newly-renovated elementary school gives students environments that support collaboration, exploration and student agency. The design transforms the early 1990s building into a studentcentered learning environment. Classrooms, maker spaces and small group rooms border an open central learning commons for student collaboration. Mobile furniture and integrated technology allow teachers and students to move quickly from group study to project-based learning to individual research.

Nathaniel Jones Early Childhood Center Indianapolis, IN
The new Nathaniel Jones Early Childhood Center gives young students an environment designed around their specific cognitive and developmental needs. The design creates two small learning communities with a variety of spaces to engage in sensory learning. Students explore nature in a large outdoor play area and connect with each other in a central atrium at the heart of each learning community. Shale Meadows Elementary School Lewis Center, OH
Shale Meadows updates Olentangy Local Schools’ elementary school prototype for the 21st century. For decades, Fanning Howey has helped Olentangy Schools manage district wide expansion through building prototypes that provide consistent resources for all students. Shale Meadows Elementary School updates the district’s existing prototype to meet the needs of project-based learning. The modified design includes additional classrooms and small group areas, a reimagined media center and reorganized administrative space with a secure entry vestibule. The design also provides dedicated SLC classrooms with internal restrooms and tutor spaces. Shale Meadows sparked a refresh of Olentangy’s remaining 15 elementary schools, with Fanning Howey designing upgrades to media centers, playgrounds and secure entries at each campus.

The addition to the Rosa Parks Elementary School creates a first-of-its-kind learning environment within the district. The expansion of Rosa Parks Elementary School will do more than solve a critical need for additional space at Middletown City Schools. The design aligns with the Challenge Based Learning model of the Middie Modernization Movement. Finneytown Elementary School Finneytown, OH
Finneytown Local Schools embarked on a HPLE process to develop a comprehensive districtwide Educational Vision and Educational Specifications for new school facilities to house K-6 students. The district’s instructional programs, delivery methods, integration of technology, and future student needs were reviewed. With the onset of COVID, an alternative approach to school planning was developed by our team which allowed input from teachers, staff, students and administrators into the facility planning process. Fishers Junior High School Media Center Fishers, IN
The transformed Fishers Junior High School media center is a smarter place for learning that puts students first. Design strategies renovated the 20-year-old space to take a student-centric approach to education. Fanning Howey reduced media retrieval stacks by 66 percent and used the space to introduce a variety of collaborative learning environments, all within the existing footprint. Junior high students now have access to small group seating, a makerspace and two small group rooms. Infrastructure upgrades include more technology, more power drops for handheld devices and laptops, and better lighting. The design team also reworked lockers in the adjacent corridors, creating places to collaborate just outside the media center.

New Castle Middle School New Castle, IN
A total modernization of New Castle Middle School is transforming the building to welcome sixth-grade students for the first time. The design highlights include a self-contained sixth-grade neighborhood, improved security, transformed space for 21st-century learning and a new auxiliary gymnasium. A creative phasing strategy has lowered the middle school’s construction costs by $5.5 million and reduced the project schedule by 6 to 12 months. During construction, New Castle Middle School’s students were moved into the New Castle High School allowing contractors to work more efficiently, resulting in the savings.

The modernization of Otter Creek Middle School is designed with and for the community. The first project in Vigo County’s facility master plan is the community-driven addition and renovation of Otter Creek Middle School. Completed in late 2020, Columbia City High School is our team’s most current example of designing for 21st Century learning. Zionsville High School Modernization Zionsville, IN
Thanks to a smarter approach to renovations and additions, students at Zionsville High School will have a safer and more collaborative learning environment. The modernization is adding 35 classrooms, a new grand dining commons, an academic/research commons, and a new administration suite to Zionsville High School. The grand commons will give the building a new heart, while renovations will turn the former cafeteria/kitchen into much-needed classrooms. The strategic placement of new construction will allow the school to separate visitor and bus traffic, reduce overcrowding in hallways and consolidate food service from three locations to one.

The new College and Career Academies at Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High Schools provide seniors with a launchpad for success. Fanning Howey served as Architect of Record for this project, which creates specialized academies focused on offering project-based learning opportunities in a flexible environment. The Academies bring a collegiate-level learning experience to the high school, allowing students to learn the collaboration and critical thinking skills they need for the next phase of their education. Project areas are accessible from adjacent classrooms via glass operable walls, and up to five classrooms can be connected at one time.

An addition to Batesville High School is bringing new educational and recreational opportunities to students and the community. New collaboration and presentation areas support studentcentered learning, and a new student activity center expands athletic and recreational offerings. Badger Field House Carmel, IN
A partnership between Carmel Dads’ Club and Clay Township is bringing new athletic programs to Carmel, Indiana. Clay Township and Carmel Dads’ Club collaborated with Fanning Howey to design a new fieldhouse. The new building will have four basketball courts and one full-sized synthetic turf field lined for football and soccer. There also will be three batting cages for baseball and softball. The fieldhouse is funded by Clay Township and will be operated by Carmel Dads’ Club. Over time, the Dads’ Club will purchase the building back from Clay Township. The partnership supports the 12 athletic programs offered by Carmel Dads’ Club, as well as after-hours use by the public.

Center Grove Student Activity Center Greenwood, IN
Designed to benefit as many students and community members as possible, the new Center Grove Student Activity Center (SAC) has something for everyone. Flexible design concepts allow the SAC to support a limitless range of activities—from track, weight training and fitness programs to band practice, robotics competitions and community recreation. The facility features four basketball/ volleyball courts, a weight room and the first 200-meter indoor track in an Indiana K-12 school.

Zionsville High School Activity Center Zionsville, IN
When Zionsville Community Schools wanted to expand its high school to include a new field house, Fanning Howey designed an addition that is more than a place for recreation.

The expansion space includes a large commons area and a learning center to support the new field house, weight and fitness facilities. The commons is ideal for group meetings, athletic team gatherings and surge space for athletic events. A new entrance provides students with direct access to the Activity Center.
COST $7.35 M
The use of a very economical load bearing insulated concrete wall panel system yielded additional budget flexibility. Fanning Howey designers used these savings to develop targeted renovations to convert underutilized interior space within the high school into a lecture hall, vocal and instrumental studios and additional classroom space within the overall project budget.

Warsaw Student Activity Center Warsaw, IN
The new Student Activity Center at Warsaw High School is a catalyst for health and wellness for students and the entire Warsaw community. The multi-sport venue supports a wide range of fitness and recreational activities, from basketball and volleyball to tennis and field events. A 200-meter indoor track with four full cross courts brings fitness amenities to a new level for students, staff and local residents. The design also incorporates flexible classrooms, childcare facilities for students and teachers and an on-site community health clinic.

Batesville High School Student Activity Center Batesville, IN
An addition to Batesville High School is bringing new recreational and educational opportunities to students and local residents. This addition created a new student commons that opens to a large gathering stair connecting student and public event gathering spaces. The commons entrance leads to the student activity center, fitness facility and multipurpose room providing opportunities and security for community use after hours. The 17,000-square-foot student activity center includes a fieldhouse, with two full size basketball and volleyball courts, competition courts with future seating for 600 spectators, and running track, 4,600 square feet of support space, six new locker rooms, a new fitness/ weight center and a new wrestling room.

Tri Star Career Compact Celina, OH
The new Tri Star Career Compact unites nine schools districts in one dynamic facility. The programs held in this state-of-the-art building will strengthen the local economy by training a new skilled workforce to meet the needs in Mercer County and Auglaize County, Ohio. In addition to providing high school students with the opportunity to develop technical skills, Tri Star Career Compact also provides space for adult education programs and training facilities for local companies and organizations. Thanks to the collaborative nature of the planning and design process, Tri Star received $2 million in donations from local companies without sending out a single fundraising letter.

Pike Career and STEM Center Indianapolis, IN
Career Center Redo. When MSD of Pike Township superintendent Nathanial Jones first saw the new Pike Career and STEM Center he described his reaction as “ecstatic.” His enthusiasm was caused by a targeted renovation effort, led by Fanning Howey, which turned underutilized portions of Pike High School into cutting-edge programs for Culinary Arts and Cosmetology. Renovations created professionalquality venues for Cosmetology, including a waiting area, cosmetology stations and a wash room. The Culinary Arts program has a full teaching kitchen and a dining room. Both spaces are open to the community. Superintendent Jones is so impressed with the dining room that it is the location of his next State Superintendent’s meeting.

Milan Center for Innovative Studies Milan, MI
The new Milan Center for Innovative Studies (MCIS) prepares students for the future in one of the most progressive learning environments in the state of Michigan. Seniors spend half of their school day at MCIS, where they develop and execute group projects under the guidance of faculty. The curriculum was developed in partnership with the district and Dr. Thom Markham, an expert on project-based learning. MCIS includes a mixture of learn labs and resource labs grouped around a large innovation zone. Interior glass and open environments create a university-level atmosphere and encourage collaboration and the cross-pollination of ideas. From collaboration to individual study, the variety of learning environments throughout MCIS support all of the different ways in which modern students learn.

Columbia City High School Columbia City, IN
In 2018, the Indiana State Legislature passed a law requiring graduation pathways for all Indiana high school students. The design of the new Columbia City High School allowed Whitley County Consolidated Schools to easily incorporate these requirements in their curriculum. Graduation pathways were chosen in collaboration with local business input during the planning process. The design includes specialized spaces to support specific career training. The Business, Entrepreneurship and Communications Academy has a television, radio and podcasting suite, including a space designed specifically for the local radio station. The Health & Human Services Academy features a medical/emergency response training room. And in the Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology Academy, students have access to preengineering equipment and CNC machines donated by local companies.
