Celebrating a winning year As part of the Rugby League World Cup 2013 Tournament, John Smith’s Stadium was proud to host, along with Kirklees Council, the group game between England and Ireland on 2nd November. England was victorious in a one-sided affair, winning 42-0.

A DAY TO REMEMBER

The game sold out almost a month prior to the game and was one of the best attended Rugby League World Cup games of the tournament. This was the first time in the stadium’s history that it was full for a sporting event. A sell-out 24,375 crowd came to Huddersfield: the town proud to be labelled ‘the birthplace of Rugby League’

As well as the game itself, fans could also enjoy a number of events surrounding the game such as the Celebration Day, which allowed fans a unique opportunity to listen to a galaxy of Rugby League stars in a series of panels, discussing their World Cup memories, the 2013 tournament. Community involvement at the event also saw 1,500 local children entertain the crowd pre-match and at half time with a variety of performances including Schools Choir, Haka, dance and cheerleading. As well as this, the stadium enjoyed huge success with almost 800 visitors purchasing hospitality packages.

This years’ Rugby League World Cup has been hailed as the greatest of all time by the organisers. Australia claimed their 10th title by beating New Zealand in the final in front of a record attendance 28 Matches were watched by over 450,000 fans in total. The Final was the best ever attended International Rugby League match of all time with an attendance of 74,468 Almost a quarter of the crowd at Wembley’s double-header were watching Rugby League live for the first time
