Office and Commercial Fit Out: Hopwells Butler & Willow has worked with Hopwells since 1993 designing, installing and maintaining cold store pallet racking systems at sites across the UK. Over recent years Butler & Willow has been asked to use another of its skill bases to redesign, project manage and refurbish existing offices at the same sites.

Kimbolton As the smallest of the Hopwells sites, the Kimbolton depot was lacking in both office and storage space. Butler & Willow took total control of the project whilst Hopwells staff moved out into temporary accommodation in the car park.

Nottingham

The space problem was solved by installing a mezzanine floor linking to the existing first floor offices increasing office space by 40%. The existing ground and first floor offices were completely stripped back which allowed for an entirely new design.

This was the first Hopwells site to be refurbished by Butler & Willow in 2006. One of the key issues with the existing offices was that it lacked a waiting area for visitors. The team at Butler & Willow created an enlarged reception with visitor seating and an impressive bespoke timber front desk. Other elements of the contract included the complete refurbishment of toilets, kitchen, staff canteen and changing rooms.

Client Feedback Phil Holman at Hopwells commented:

“Over the years we have developed a strong working relationship and have been able to build a close partnership with the Butler & Willow team to ensure all our objectives have been met. Each site had a different brief; Butler & Willow were able to provide us with practical solutions which were cost effective.” Sheffield After successfully refurbishing and fitting out the Hopwells headquarters in Nottingham, the Sheffield site required a total refurbishment. In particular it needed a fully fitted “national” demonstration kitchen and presentation room to cook and show products to clients. This would also require a full redesign of the offices and reception and visitor areas. Butler & Willow refurbished the boardroom complete with a full width audio/visual wall and installed a state of the art demonstration kitchen which included range cookers, fridges, high quality work tops and an island with seating. The kitchen was both functional and modern, creating the 'wow' factor for visitors.

Project Summary Time scale: Key Features:

4 months Full site refurbishment including furniture, installation of a state of the art kitchen, chequer plating to provide protection.

Warehouse Racking and Storage: Primopost Packaging solutions company Primopost Limited contracted Butler & Willow to increase in-house storage capacity. Client Feedback Andrew Foster at Primopost commented:

“The project has cut overheads, created more space and increased operating efficiencies - it’s a great success.” As part of a major reconfiguration of the production and storage areas within its buildings Primopost employed Butler & Willow to design and install a range of solutions to accommodate the growing need for production space and storage of raw materials and finished goods. As a result of the changes Primopost has cut its overheads and has complete control of all its raw materials and finished goods products.

Project Summary Key Features:

Mezzanine floor, pallet racking to hold 600 pallet locations.

Archive and Mobile Shelving

Solutions: Astra Zeneca

Butler & Willow was invited to tender for the removal of the current shelving and the installation of a new ventilated mobile system. After contacting several UK based mobile manufacturers and discovering that a ventilated mobile shelving system did not exist in this country nor had one ever been designed before, Butler & Willow was tasked with the design, from scratch, of a ventilated shelving system that could work on mobile bases. Eighty nine standard bays of adjustable steel shelving were used. At the rear of each bay, a plenum was included which allowed fresh air to be pulled through the perforated glass sliding door, across the shelf and into the void. Flexible hoses then took the air vertically and directly into the buildings extract system. The mobile base floor tracks were inserted into the existing concrete floor and new vinyl flooring was laid down.

Project Summary Time scale: 5 weeks Key Features: Bespoke mobile shelving, integrated air conditioning, toughened glass doors.

Mezzanine Floors: Games Workshop When Games Workshop made the decision to merge two of its distribution stores it required a major mezzanine building programme which could not affect its 24 hour production working.

Client Feedback Tom Howard at Games Workshop, commented

“Butler & Willow provided a thoroughly professional service which delivered our mezzanine on time and within budget. In all phases of the project, they exceeded our expectations.

Butler & Willow was one of seven companies tendering for the work. Through detailed discussion and pre-tender planning meetings a plan was developed that would make the scheme viable and would limit the disruption for Games Workshop.

Once the order was placed and before the mezzanine installation commenced Butler & Willow consulted with the Games Workshop team to meticulously plan the installation on a phased day to day basis, ensuring that production could continue uninterrupted. To overcome the obvious problems of installing in a working environment Butler & Willow carried out the refit at night and on weekends, installing the 17,200 square foot mezzanine floor and goods lift over existing conveyors, machinery and racking.

Project Summary Time scale: 10 weeks Key Features: CDM project management, mezzanine floor, installation of a lift.

Retail Storage Soultions:

Mansfield District Council

John Smedley

Mansfield District Council was lacking space for its ever expanding volume of archive materials and needed a storage solution that satisfied not just its present needs but also any future requirements.

Butler & Willow has carried out six retail storage installations for historic luxury knitwear brand John Smedley.

Butler & Willow solved the Council’s storage problem by installing its Unirack mobile shelving product. The Council had originally been offered a design using a 3.5 metre tall racking system that required a pedestrian driven lifting device for the higher shelves to be reached. As part of the solution doorways needed to be widened and raised in height to accommodate the lifting platform. Butler & Willow designed an alternative; a mobile shelving system using two metre high, Unirack adjustable shelving which did not require specialised lifting devices or the need for any structural alterations to the building. The design gave greater capacity, flexibility and was considerably more cost effective.

As technology advances the machinery used to create woollen garments is increasingly compact, freeing up space for storage. This, teamed with the phenomenal growth of online shopping has meant a shift in how John Smedley uses space within the premises. Since 1999, Butler & Willow has designed and installed six separate Unirack storage systems. Ideal for boxed retail items, the adjustable shelving system with zinc plated finish helps the Unirack shelving system to look at home in a variety of applications, whilst providing a flexible economical and re-usable storage medium.

Client Feedback
