1. introduction

Ottawa is Canada’s capital, a dynamic city of more than one million people. Located in Ontario at the Quebec border, it’s a place where French and English clash in the most spectacular of ways; where you can discover Canada’s heritage at dozens of national sites and famous landmarks, including the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Ottawa is a city steeped in culture and diversity, with world-class museums and galleries displaying stunning national collections and special exhibitions from Canada and around the world.

concept concept

Ottawa is a brilliant city of sports and celebration. That’s why, during the games, Ottawa’s numerous festivities and events will overlap to create a giant celebration of humanity, sports, diversity, and sheer awesomeness! Ottawa’s renowned and extensive network of parks and trails will create a games bent on eco-friendliness and public transit. It will also allow Ottawa to close down streets, and fill our 3,000 hectares of interconnected greenspace with booths and activities, all within a compact 5km radius from the city centre. These “festival zones” are so massive, and interconnected, that the entire system would equate in size with the Queen Elizabeth II Olympic Park in London. During the games, these festivities and events/venues will take advantage and compliment Ottawa’s numerous revitalization projects, such as Landsdowne Park and Tunney’s Pasture. The legacy of the games will

transform Ottawa into a greener and more sustainable city, with improved park and public spaces, and lush community gardens on rooftops and along our renovated mixed-use trails and bike lanes. Eco friendly materials that were used to build temporary venues would be reused and recycled, and would compliment Ottawa’s already green environment. In addition, the legacy would leave a huge footprint and foundation for Ottawa’s transit vision by testing and improving our already extensive and successful BRT network, and under-construction LRT Lines that would run right through venue clusters. Ottawa’s compact plan will become a benchmark for fun and sustainability, and give the capital a spectacular boost on the way

dates

The proposed dates for Ottawa’s grand celebration will overlap key Canadian holidays and events. Kicking off with Ottawa’s spectacular Canada Day celebration on 1 July, the Pan and Parapan American Games will continue with celebration throughout the month of July, the month where weather is at its warmest (~27C) and where the calendar is at its clearest.

transportation

Ottawa is primarily served by OCTranspo. The city is home to one of the most perfected and extensive systems of Bus Rapid Transit in North America. OCTranspo also maintains a light rail line, the O-Train (soon to be renamed the Trillium Line). Another LRT Line is currently under construction and will be opened by 2018. It will be the largest financial endeavour that the city has constructed of its kind. This line is the Confederation Line. Most venues will follow the path of the Confederation Line to ensure easy access for visitors, and less congestion for residents. The Trillium Line will connect the North/ West Zones with the South Zone, while the Confederation Line will connect the West Zone with the North Zone. Ottawa Airport is Ottawa’s primary airport. It has 13 airlines with over 50 destinations, mostly to and from the Americas. Ottawa also has VIA Rail and Greyhound connections to many parts of Canada and the United States.
