THE FIRST BUDGET AIRLINE IN INDIA
Hello Business Connect readers, welcome back to another amazing success story. We cover a lot of really inspirational success stories of entrepreneurs and their businesses. And there are very few business stories, which are as heart-touching and incredible as Air Deccan, which turned the thought of flying for every Indian middleclass, into a reality. After serving for 8 years in the Indian Army, Captain G. R. Gopinath started trying his hand in various things, including multicultural farming, sericulture, and Agri-consultancy, but he created history in 2003 with the launch of India’s first budget flights Air Deccan.
WHO IS CAPT.
G.R GOPINATH?
Capt. Gorur Ramaswamy Lyengar Gopinath (the founder of Air Deccan) is an Indian entrepreneur, former Indian military officer, an author, and a politician. He was born on 13 Nov 1951 in a remote small village Gorur, 20Km away from Hassan, Karnataka. After graduating from the Indian Military academy. He got the commission in the Indian army and spent eight years there. Gopinath also fought in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. The life of the army seemed to somehow tie him down. At an early age, he took retirement from the army and turned himself into the farming. He developed a low-cost, natural system for cultivating mulberry trees for silkworm production, to restore the damaged rural landscapes.
HOW DID AIR DECCAN START?
The story began in the 1990s when Gopinath was in Singapore, where he read about a helicopter company, founded by a girl in Vietnam.

(The company was set up to carry tourists in the US to Vietnam after the war had destroyed infrastructure in the country.) The story reportedly inspired Gopinath to do something in India. In 1997, He founded a company called Deccan Charters, a private limited aviation company offering helicopter services for company charters, tourism, medical evacuation, offshore logistics, and other services. Soon the company emerged as a pioneer in helicopter tourism in India. Deccan’s helicopters were charted by many politicians. While serving tourists, the company encountered demands of flight in small cities. He claimed that Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh government representatives asked him whether DAPL could provide Air links to the small cities. Air Deccan’s business model was inspired by the success of Southwest Airlines in the United States and Ryanair in Europe. Captain G.R. Gopinath started the Air Deccan company with just one flight (15-year-old turboprop).

INTRODUCTION
Air Deccan was founded in 2003 by exarmy officer G. R. Gopinath. The whole intention was to let middle-class people fly in the air at an affordable price. And guess what, they succeed. As the airline started, 25,000 passengers were flying every day. According to a BBC report, three million Indians flew at one rupee a ticket. There are cheap airfares in history as low as rupees 1 to gift most of the first-timers a free ride. Unfortunately, in Sep 2011, Mr. Mallya shut down the bleeding Kingfisher Red, which was renamed after acquiring Air Deccan.
In the very short time of the period, the company growth was phenomenal, passengers were lapping it up. In just four years, Air Deccan reached from one employee to four thousand employees, from one pilot to 500 pilots, from one aircraft to 245 aircraft. They deploy one aircraft a month every month. The company had estimates to reach 70 cities all across the country.

WHY DID AIR DECCAN MERGE WITH KINGFISHER?
The company was seeing huge success but they were still losing money. Gopinath realized that the company needs funding to sustain the business for a long time. In this case, he sold Air Deccan to Vijay Mallya (Who used to run Kingfisher airline flights). Mr. Mallya renamed Air Deccan as Kingfisher Red. But Kingfisher was already consistently making losses. Post-2010, the airline failed to capture. In 2011, Vijay Mallya closed a bleeding Kingfishers Red. Unfortunately, by 2012 his whole business went bankrupt. Capt. Gopinath said to BBC in 2012,
“Mr. Mallya never had time for the airline, if he had focused on it – I don’t think anyone could have done a better job than him.” He added,
“It was sad, but the dream of Air Deccan lives one. The budget airline Revolution continues”
