Agricultural research in Sierra Leone has made significant contributions towards
improvement of the agricultural production and rural development in the past. In order to
strengthen the role of agricultural research, the Government established the Sierra Leone
Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI) through an Act of Parliament as the country’s
agricultural research and agricultural technology generating body for the benefit of the
farming, fishing and forestry sectors. When fully operational, SLARI shall be composed
of seven research centres spread throughout the country. The Centres include (i) Njala
Agricultural Research Centre; (ii) Rokupr Agricultural Research Centre; (iii) Kabala
Horticultural Crops Research Centre; (iv) Teko Livestock Research Centre; (v) Freetown
Fisheries Research Centre; (vi) Kenema Forestry and Tree Crops Research Centre; and
(vii) Magbosi Land and Water Research Centre
