BRICKFIELDS COMMUNITY LIBRARY URBAN INFILL PROJECT | KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

Architectural Studio 5 Taylor’s University, Malaysia The Brickfields Community Library is an urban infill project in the low income district of Brickfields, central Kuala Lumpur. The design concept was derived from the exploration of the dense city grids on site and the discovery of local community activity packed into the voids within the grid. Rapidly growing development activity encroaching the area along with lack of communal space hinders community activity, resulting in pockets of activity in any available spaces such as the local wet market stretching along the service lane(back alley) directly behind the site. The Brickfields Community Library intends to re-route community and pedestrian network through the library programmed with valuable communal space, activities and opportunities to absorb negativity as they experience the library on their daily commu

The site sits between a corner tower and existing shoplots adjacent to the Brickfield’s main road that connects two major city transport hubs. The library design breaks the dense facade local to the area by using negative space to naturally attract visual connection and encourage users. Voids, levels and VOIDS CREATE FOCAL POINT transparency are used to this effect to showcase CONNECTION + CIRCULATION the openness in the design programme and dispel any formality to the space to encourage public usage. It takes advantage of the heavy pedestrian traffic and communal activities present on site to direct circulation through the library. The double-volume void in the rear facade is designed to overcome the existing row of shoplots behind the site si and appeal to pedestrians and wet market users. Greenery is placed within the void to further LOWER LEVEL HIGHER LEVEL create focal attraction besides providing shade to = INTIMACY = VISUAL HIERARCHY the courtyard/plaza.

The voids in the form shape the internal circulation of the community library and levels create visual connection to the core of the library. The library programme is determined by the level of traffic and available visual connectivity. The library with a children’s corner spills over into the ground floor courtyard for informal reading and family activities by passing locals. A cafe, newspaper stand, drinks bar and a small multipurpose hall also sits on the ground floor to enhance the informal sense of the space for the community to make their own. Privacy levels increase with each floor to facilitate serious library activities and usage.

UNESCO CULTURAL CENTER KRISTANG PORTUGUESE SETTLEMENT | MALACCA, MALAYSIA

Architectural Studio 6 Taylor’s University, Malaysia The Kristang UNESCO Cultural Center is a heritage conservation center for the Kristang people of Ujong Pasir, Malacca. The Kristang are people of portuguese and local Malaysian descent who are descended from interracial marriages between Portuguese settlers and locals during the Portuguese colonization of Malacca in the 1800's. They possess a unique hybrid culture and language as a result. The Kristang have suered

through generations of discrimination towards colonization and estrangement from other local communities after the Portuguese left. This has resulted in deep cultural trauma leading to a decline in cultural values and even language as they struggle to maintain their identity while forced to undergo assimilation. Nowadays, the Kristang have a rooted fear of being deemed irrelevant and social issues have consequently surfaced within the Kristang community as they dissociate themselves from their unique culture.

The UNESCO Cultural Center’s site is an existing carpark lot that sits strategically between three defining aspects of the Kristang culture; Ocean, Cuisine and Religion. The Kristang are fishermen by nature and have settled in seafront settlements where their biggest economical source are the Portuguese-Malaysian cuisine serving foodcourts in the settlement that cater to tourists and locals alike. They identify strongly with the Christian religion being the major religion in the settlement and also still practice their Portuguese traditions namely the fishermen’s heavily decorated boats for the “Boat Blessing” festival which includes traditional dances. The UNESCO Cultural Center connects the existing foodcourts, chapel and seafront by intervening the pedestrian routes of all three with communal space for heritage conservation activities that also allow for commercial interaction with visitors. This creates opportunity for extra income sources while encouraging cultural showcases from the locals to strengthen cultural values. Exhibition areas for cultural artifacts, an open kitchen for cooking showcases for tourists, a youth center, dance and music studios, a small community hall and an ocean amphitheater for performances are complimentary programmes offered by the center. The footprint of the center was extended into the foodcourts and chapel areas by way of material to further integrate the center and neighbouring programmes to compliment all three.

Arkitek KDI 2017 Conceptual design and images by me for Arkitek KDI for a four-storey, boutique hotel design proposal. The site is located on a Conce heritage lane in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The client requested for visual continuity in lobby area with a cafe and bar on the ground floor. A semi-open courtyard with skylight and a mixed usage of ventilation blocks and louvres was implemented to facilitate this. The cafe and bar were combined to achieve a multipurpose leisure area that can spill out onto the pedestrian-access only street, to expand the space. The ground floor courtyard’s walls consist of bifold louvred windows which all allow ventilation up to the roof through the courtyard whether open or closed. Ventilation block walls are used in the rear ground floor facade to encourage air movement through the lobby and lounge. They are also used in the bathroom areas for passive ventilation but with controlled permeability for privacy, they will also create a unique light display via the facade at night as different guests use bathrooms on their own schedule.
