1. SYNOPSIS 1.1 AIM: The main aim is to study and analyse the work of an architect who has worked in India with respect to the culture we follow, the traditions we have, the availability of materials and the climate. 1.2 OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the dissertation is to study and analyse the work of AR. Zubin Zainuddin. • To study how with the help of different forms and material give public buildings a decent look which also mixes with the environment and site surroundings and responsible for safeguarding the safety and welfare of the public. • To delve into the thought procedure and ideology of the architect, which allows us to understand many underlying whys and wherefores. Through this endeavour I will comprehended the multilayer thought procedure that goes in the building of a landmark. • To study a structure in context of its site, space, culture and period, the idea is to understand the architect's vision and how successfully it had been translated into tangible reality. 1.3 RATIONALE FOR SELECTION : The reason for choosing Architect ZUBIN ZAINUDDIN is his thoughts and expressions. His belief for the design, as he says " Contemporary architecture is something that we really connect with, inspirations can be from all relevant time, styles, and period, but our approach has always been to be true and relevant to the current scenario that we are practicing in.” He adds "Technology and efficiencies of building construction are always being pushed in all the projects that we build.” HE BELIEVES “Design cannot be categorised, it is a result of the client’s needs and a response to the environment around us. There are no rules to follow. Being true to the time and the space to be designed is of pragmatic value. Attention to detail is something that is getting more relevant to the way we are looking at our projects.’ 1.4 SCOPE OF STUDY: 

2. INTRODUCTION 2.1 ABOUT THE ARCHITECT

Architecture has always been something, which is very close to him even when he was in 9th standard and wanted to be an architect. He has done his graduation from Bharati Vidyapeeth college of Architecture, Mumbai, and worked with Ar. Hafeez Contractor, Saboo Francis, and Alfaz Miller. After completing a short but eventful stint with the leading firms, both Ar. Krupa and Ar. Zainuddin joined hands and decided to start their own venture and that's how ZZ Architects was born in 2002.

Known for the experimentation with high end material and finishes, the firm has clearly set its path to be among the top global design practices. According to AR ZUBIN ZAINUDDIN, "Attention to detail, design longevity and satisfaction of completing the project is what drives our practice. Over the past few years, we have consciously realized the importance of the quality of the projects that we deliver. We want it to be rated on a global platform and also want our projects to stand the test of time.”

The architect take inspiration from Art, Food, Fashion, Graphic, Cinema, Product Design, Literature and Travel. He believes in traveling across the world and

An open mindedness towards variety of cultures around the world and our inherent design instinct leads to innovation'. 

The firm ZZ Architects has become known for designing projects of exceptional materials and quality, with a strong conceptual basis derived from the specific needs and aspirations of each client. The architect believes, "It's important to reinvent ourselves with every project. We strongly believe in personalizing and evolving our style. We are very particular about material language and final fit and finish. Every small detail adds up in a project. We believe that design cannot be left to chance."

2.4 DESIGN PHILOSOPHY 2.4.1 APPROACH TO CONCEPT Architecture has usually been defined as the art of building. It is an art, made for people and is a major expression of culture. The Architect today is both an artist and an Engineer, who must combine knowledge of design and construction and of the available resources in labour techniques and materials to produce a harmonious and functional work. Today the Architect plans both the aesthetics and the construction of his building in a highly conscious manner, often deliberately attempting to communicate artistic concepts and abstract ideas through inner spaces and structure itself. AR Zubin Zainuddin desires their firm to be a part of changing the perception of India as a creative and global hub for quality projects and design. They say, "The new age architecture is constantly evolving. It's a time when the Indian design scene is going through a paradigm shift. There is a fusion of different styles and there is a reality between concept and execution. It's a competitive market with high deliverables. With the growing infrastructure development and the number of ongoing construction projects, there is a lot of positive change one can expect from India"

His approach hence is to look to context as a repository of latent resources connecting production process and network’s, appropriating techniques beyond their traditional use while allowing them to evolve and persist not just through preservation but more so through evolution. He advocates this hybrid model as an alternative to the traditional architectural practice, believing that this enables us to respond to the specificity of the local by evolving methodologies of extreme subjectivity.

2018-2019

2.6.2 THE CRAFTSMAN He looks forward to approach his design processes in his own unique style where he uses his creativity to design each and every aspect of the building in a way in which a craftsman approaches his products. He has designed the false ceilings, facades, entrances and even the subtle details of furniture in his buildings by using his craftsman's approach.

He sees collaborations and collective models of practice not as isolated individual formats but as symbiotic streams feeding into each other. His practice tries to occupy a space in between these disparate worlds, for example, moving from extreme craft to mechanization as a mode of production, sometimes on the same project. The studio’s design processes are open to systemically incorporate feedback from various components of project building, with the end product almost contingent on the stages and inputs in its construction.

2.6.3 SELECTION OF MATERIALS His selection of materials varies from the usage of basalt and rammed earth for walls to the use of wood in the false ceilings and furniture. What he primarily focusses on is using the locally available materials and the involvement of local resources in the construction process.

3. CASE STUDIES 3.1 LUXURY VILLA Locality Area Jubilee Hills, City Hyderabad State Telangana Start Month, Year 2011 End Month Year 2013 Area 40000sqft

3.1.1 CONCEPT Steered by the notion of a lavish home that conceives space, which is physically dynamic whilst generating a mental sense of peace, a contemporary and simplistic villa with a sense of timeless elegance is crafted. Aligning the architectural vocabulary with the location’s climate and geography, the built volume is created in harmony with nature and the surroundings, which as a notion forms the basis of the design.

3.1.2 SITE LOCATION AND CONTEXT Designed as a grand villa for an elite family in Hyderabad, in the prime location of Jubilee Hills, the home is an embodiment of the clients’ sense of style and meticulous attention to detail, quality of fit and finish. Spread over an area of 40,000 sq. ft. the home endeavours to create a balance of all the vignettes in the clients’ life, and therefore, substantiate a bespoke space home, unlike a tower like building.

3.1.4 FEATURES Approaching the house from the main gate, one experiences a rhythmic succession of spaces. The vocabulary of the architectural spaces clearly defines the interior spaces with internal courtyards, decks for bedrooms and the swimming pool with the landscaped deck that overflow the nature into the indoor spaces. An infinity pool at the master level is overlooked from the private lounge and the casual seating zones, adding a blue dimension; the swimming deck exudes a youth and warm glow in the soft evening sunset.

Every architectural feature melts itself to form a congruous whole, while retaining its identity as a work of art. The main living space has a 25 ft. high architecturally designed volumetric space that overlooks the private landscaped green, culminating into a large communal gathering space used primarily for entertaining. The demarcation of the layout into different seating zones for practical purposes makes it usable throughout the day. The space is magnified by the light and shadow play from the specially customised large-scaled windows along the periphery.

With a unique sense of scale, both the interiors and exteriors symbolically complement each other as a unifying experience. Separated from the lounge by means of a double height courtyard with a water cascade gushing through a stone clad wall, the design of the master bedroom evokes calmness and tranquillity, and showcases the clients’ personality. The courtyard has a skylight that filters in natural light into the master spaces. The master bathroom is finished in stone and sensor-based fittings, endowing the space with an exquisite look, a convenient his / her layout and private walk-in closet spaces. A dedicated

guest floor with a lounge also accommodates a gymnasium, spa and home theatre; the floor also has an attached deck and shares the courtyard vertically with the master space

A stone (epoxy filled travertine marble) clad façade complements the colossal volume inside the house. A warm theme is adopted for interiors, using white in a refined material palette to emanate a sense of serenity. There are fewer objects and spaced out furniture, less contrast and a layering of textures in subtle colours. While integrating functionality and context, the villa responds to all the clients’ spatial requirements, resulting in being aesthetically and functionally pleasing both inside out

3.2.1 CONCEPT 



The concept of Luxury Hotel based Service Apartments arrived in India a decade ago, and while Surat has become more integrated with the global economy, executives from all over the world travel to business hubs and spend weeks or months working from different locations. Surat which is 4th fastest growing city of the world, is blessed with immense talent in diversified fields. The visitors in Surat basically require a living space where they can stay for a longer duration compared to a Hotel. Staying at Hotels for such long periods is costly, where The World will offer an alternative. It is designed in such a way where a person can enjoy the pleasure of home and services of a hotel. Moreover it is reflecting Hindva's respect for Surat's incredible history and futuristic developments, combined with their own aesthetic.

4. INFERENCES AND CONCLUSION 

Buildings appearance is the main factor in praising the architecture but flexibility and modular need of a building has to be kept in mind. This makes a building to be a responsible one in the years to come.

The design of a building might not be a rigid regular one, but an aesthetically & unconventionally dynamic form is always appreciated & admired.

Free flow of Spaces is a very important aspect, especially when designing Institutional Buildings.

Spaces needs to be Dynamic rather than constrained & reserved for one function. This creates the multi functionality aspect in the design, saving resource of Land besides creating interest in the User.

Judicious Use of Resources does not require an advanced use of Technological Applications, rather rational understanding of the site context can help in conserving the resources such as Land, Water & Energy.

The role of Community can’t be neglected while designing Urban spaces.Their role & inputs are very important while deigning or rehabilitating community Spaces.

 We need to think beyond the conventional materials used for construction & must try to use and exploit the locally available materials.
