Healthy diet, exercise key to staving off ACL injuries By JOSH BERHOW

uman knees and dog knees are very similar, and the injuries both are susceptible to is the same as well. Dr. Marvin Trandem has been in practice for 42 years. He is one of three doctors at the Faribault Veterinary Clinic, and he does the majority of the clinic’s orthopedic work. He said ACL injuries are the most common orthopedic problem he sees in dogs. “The knee in a dog is much like a human knee, so it is vulnerable to the same types of injuries that people are,” Trandem said. “But in a dog these ligaments, when they get older, tend to degenerate and become paper thin, and that’s where some of the vulnerability comes from.” According to Trandem, the age and weight of a dog has a major influence in its ability to stave off ACL injuries. The older a dog is and the heavier it is – the more weight it has to carry around on slender legs – the more likely it is to have an ACL problem in the future. Trandem said that labs are the breed he has to treat for ACL injuries the most, but that also is in part due to the large population of them in the area. The majority of the dogs Trandem works with for ACL injuries are older, not in athletic shape and tend to be inside dogs. A likely scenario is that such dogs run around outside or at a park, and if they’re not used to it, they might come back hobbling. But healthy, active dogs still could come up with similar injuries, although a healthy lifestyle decreases their chances. Ex-

Miley, a 5-year-old lab, sits with Dr. Marvin Trandem at the Faribault Veterinary Clinic. Miley had ACL surgery about eight months ago and was recently in for a checkup to see if work needed to be done on the other. There’s about a 35-40 percent chance that if a dog has one ACL injury, within two years it will have problems with the other. (Josh Berhow/Daily News)

ercising and keeping weight down is the key. “You don’t have much muscle there, and they are relying on that ligament too much and putting too much pressure on it (with their weight),” Trandem said. “If they are not in good tone they are just so much more vulnerable to these injuries.”

Depending on the severity of the injury, an ACL can be cured with simple rest or, in more severe cases, surgery. Some dogs who only suffer a small Reach Sports Reporter Josh Berhow unraveling of the ACL can fix it by at 333-3119, or follow him on Twitter. restricting activity, resting and using com @joshberhow anti-inflammatory medication. says.) Other times more serious action is needed. The method Trandem uses is called an extracapsular technique, which is when they strategically place a band in the knee to reduce the instability, and that helps produce scar tissue to hold the knee in place (recovery time is usually three to six months). There are other techniques as well, one of which is a more sophisticated type of surgery that involves breaking the tibia below the knee and repositioning it to minimize the instability. Course of action also relies on the owner. Owners of an older dog may not want to undergo a serious surgery, and others who own hunting or sporting dogs may want a top-notch fix. But beware of future problems: There’s about a 35-40 percent chance that if a dog has one ACL injury, within two years it will have problems with the other. Trandem said the best way to avoid ACL injuries is to put dogs on a healthy diet and give them lots of exercise, much like the key to a healthy life of their owners. “Exercise your dog, and make sure it keeps a good muscle tone and keeps its weight down,” Trandem said. “The more weight they have the more pressure it puts on the legs … It’s the same problem in our society. We are eating a lot of food that gradually just picks up weight over a lifetime, and it’s the same with our dogs.”

How about the number of times they are featured? In Faribault, we strut our pet

In celebration of that annual event, we asked folks to submit their favorite pet photos to our website. We’re publishing them here along with a short anecdote about what makes that pet so special. Thanks to those who contributed and we look forward to seeing you Thursday at the Pet Parade!

Type: Bull Terrier Owner: Kathryn Story: Jade loves camping. She has her own lounge chair!!

PAGE 7

Type: Heinz 57 Owner: Becca Story: Joy and I went to the dog park one afternoon and as I was getting ready to leave, Joy decided she had more exploring to do. So Joy took off around the pond and wouldn’t let me get within five feet of her. A nice man said he would help me out, so he went around the other side of the pond. Before long we had Joy cornered. She kept evading us, making her way to the very edge of the slab right next to the pond. And of course, with one wrong step, Joy slipped into the water and began splashing around as we scooped her out. She never fought leaving the park again.

Mattie Mae

Type: Golden Doodle Owner: dekenelson Story: I came home from work one day to find Mattie covered in mud. I was very confused, wondering how she let herself out and then back in. Then, I discovered she had completely shredded an indoor palm tree and dumped 5 gallons of dirt in our living room. That wasn’t enough for Mattie ... she also drug her waterdish into the middle of the huge pile of dirt and tipped it over, creating mud. Yes, Lola & Lulu mud in my livingroom. Good thing we can never stay mad Type: A mystery long at that cute poodle doodle face! Owner: Jim Norma Story: Lulu and Lola sleep and play together. They love to lick their owners faces while they are sleeping.

Type: Bugg (Pug/Boston hybrid) Owner: greasyowl Story: Lily will hunt flies in the house, and she will not stop until she catches them.

Max

Type: American Bulldog/Pug Owner: ckalow07 Story: Max is a very confident and outgoing dog. He makes friends where ever he goes; human and canine alike. He does, however, have a few strange fears which include such things as hanging plants, sombreros, plastic starfish and harmonicas. When encountering any of these items he typically runs away as fast as possible. Then he will turn around and proceed to bark and growl (from a safe distance, of course) until whichever terrifying and threatening inanimate object is removed.

Ozzy

Type: Australian Shepherd Owner: Suelaine Story: Ozzy likes to drink like people do, out of a glass, sitting in a chair. We were downtown to pick up a pizza and the door to the restaurant was open. Wallee & Whoopee

PAGE 9

Type: Morkie and Yorkiepoo Owner: CNS18 Story: Wallee and Whoopee love to do everything together. They are best friends, yet total opposites. Wallee likes to bite at the vacuum and kiss everything he encounters. People can’t believe how loud Wallee snores. I’ll bet he scores about a 9 on the snoring dog Richter Scale. Whoopee likes to think she is a frog and hop on things. I took her down to my parents slough one time and she jumped right in with a multitude of bull frogs! That was one messy pup.

Sierra

Type: Ragdoll Owner: nan2147 Story: While I was sick, Sierra kept me company. This picture shows her “praying for me.” She is a “laid back” cat, but has a “crazy” time at about 9 p.m. One night she ran through the house and jumped on her tower and tipped it over with her on it.

Kirby Killebrew

Type: Shihtzu Owner: Pride42 Story: Named him after the two greatest Minnesota Twins Players of all time ... Kirby Puckett and Harmon Killebrew.

Nyu

Type: Pomeranian/Chihuahua Owner: nyu27 Story: When we blow on Nyu’s face; she shakes her head.

Wesley

Type: African Grey Owner: Not given Story: Unlike most animals, Wesley has the ability to talk. Most of the time he randomly rattles off everything he knows; however, when he uses the word “wow,” he manages to use it correctly every single time, usually creating a comical moment for the bird. Wesley is not easily impressed, to say the least.
