Welcome to Town! Whether you are a home-grown tomato or a recent transplant, I believe you will find much of interest in our 2014 Discover Kenyon guide. The world changes and so do our small towns. The trend of return migration –people coming back to live in their hometown or another like it –is evident in rural Goodhue County. People want to raise their family in a place that is healthy, inclusive and safe. To my way of thinking, there isn’t a better place to do that than a small town! Spend a few hours on the streets of Kenyon, Wanamingo, Nerstrand or Dennison and you Lenz will experience a comfortable pace of life. Through all of Minnesota’s beautiful individual seasons, the hum of everyday activity continues. In Kenyon, kids ride by on bicycles, perhaps even receiving a friendly “ice cream ticket” from a police officer just because they were wearing their helmet. At the community swimming pools in Wanamingo and Kenyon, high school lifeguards oversee the splashes and teach swimming lessons to enthusiastic youngsters. On the sidelines, parents watch with bated breath as their little ones take that first brave dive into the deep end. By next week they will be swimming like little fish! Out at Big Woods State Park in Nerstrand, families discover the fun of camping and hike the trails to see waterfalls. Big tractors approach the edge of town where you can see fields of corn plainly from City Hall. In Dennison, people come out to enjoy the Farmer’s Market every Wednesday night and visit with neighbors as they peruse the produce.
Downtown, guys at the Clutchman’s Auto Club raise a green 1970 Roadrunner up on the lift. Endless summer ends all too soon but there is still plenty to see and do in a rural community. The Goodhue County Fair in early August, followed by the Kenyon Rose Fest, means that the Minnesota State Fair is not far away. Golfers take advantage of the last balmy days of the season at the Kenyon Country Club. School starts, the lights come on at the K-W football field on a Friday night and the air turns cooler. Midnight lights out in the country means farmers are hard at work bringing in the harvest of soybeans and corn. Winter brings the excitement of the first snow and the roar of snowmobiles on groomed trails as the Kenyon Snowdrifters enjoy their season. At Depot Park, broomball teams do their best to score a goal on the ice at the Wednesday night Park and Rec games. Around here, winter means basketball and wrestling, both of which have strong roots and fierce competitors for Kenyon-Wanamingo Schools. In spring the fleet-footed runners and softball pitchers give way to the boys of summer as the Wanamingo Jacks and the Legion Baseball teams take the field. Senior citizens thank the good Lord that their road to church is once again easier to travel on Sunday morning. Sometime in early May, the tree roses on Kenyon’s namesake Boulevard of Roses are resurrected to stand tall for the coming summer. Stop to smell their blooms and appreciate the beauty of rural Minnesota; discover Kenyon.

In 1855, the first settlers arrived in the area. L.N. Bye settled in the north corner of sections 7 and 8. Christian and Sever Halvorson settled in section 18 just west of the Old Stone Church, whose construction didn’t start until 1871. L.A. Felt built the first building in town on the north side of the Zumbro in 1856. These four men were the first to open up the Kenyon area. The following year in May 1856, James A. Day and James M. LaDuc came and made claims to where the village is now situated. LaDuc named it Kenyon after his alma mater, Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. The year 1857 was busy. A steam saw mill was built. It stood where the swimming pool is now. In March, Stephen Bullis established Kenyon’s first hotel, “The Pioneer,” on the corner just west of Roseview apartments. The village boomed with the arrival of the Chicago Great Western Railroad in 1885. A store was opened by P.L. Berg in the area of Jerry’s Ace Hardware. By 1893, the village had two hotels, a foundry and machine shop, a large brick school building, a tannery, two banks, a flouring mill and a weekly newspaper. A second railroad, the Chicago Milwaukee, came along in 1903. The small village continued to prosper until 1908 when the “April Fool’s Day Fire” destroyed seven businesses along Main Street. Momentum was regained after World War I and after the worst of the Great Depression. Kenyon Municipal Utilities took over electrical service in 1932 and has maintained it ever since. Telephone service, started by Dr. Joseph A. Gates in 1901, was continuously improved until a modern exchange connected all residents with service. The school in Kenyon was accredited in 1896. In 1915, the voters of Kenyon decided a new school building was needed. Work on the $62,000 structure was completed by mid-December that year and the building was dedicated in 1916. A new gymnasium/auditorium was added in 1938 and another addition was done in 1962. A new elementary school and Picha Memorial Field were constructed in 1954. Kenyon schools

combined with Wanamingo in the fall of 1990 and became District 2172. A new school was erected in 1998 alongside the former elementary building. It is now known as Kenyon-Wanamingo Middle/High School (grades 5-12). 2014 marks the 23rd graduating class of Kenyon-Wanamingo High School. During the winter of 2012-2013 and throughout that spring, the
city had the former Kenyon and Kenyon-Wanamingo School building on Forest Street abated and demolished by Blue Earth Environmental. The site was purchased by First Evangelical Lutheran Church, located adjacently. A monument to the old school building is currently being designed using the decorative egg and scroll pediment and cast nameplate from the original 1916 section of the building.

M.T. Gunderson House: You can’t miss this beautifully restored Victorian style home on Gunderson Boulevard on the west side of town. Run by the Kenyon Area Historical Society, the home was built in 1895 by M.T. Gunderson and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are available to the public on the third weekend of every month in the summer and spaces in the home are available for rent to private parties. Not to be missed is the annual Victorian Christmas in the home, held in the second week of December. The event features an old-fashioned holiday meal from the era served by costumed re-enactors, live entertainment and tours of the artfully decorated home. Aspelund Peony Gardens/Aspelund Winery: With over 65 varieties of lovely peony plants to choose from, the Aspelund Peony Gardens is a fragrant and beautiful place to
visit in the month of June. Located northeast of Kenyon, they are also developing a vineyard. The vineyard is slated to open in 2015. Schweich’s Hotel, Food and Bar: This 1908 historic brick building was originally the Central Hotel and Café, operated by Hans E. Bergh. Over the years it was home to several different clothing businesses and then sat vacant before developer Lawrence Schweich renovated the building reusing some materials, such as the original stamped tin ceiling tiles. The old Central Hotel was brought back to its original purpose. In June of 2013, Schweich’s vision was complete. The hotel offers 5 full suites on the upper level , restaurant and bar on the main floor, private event space on the lower level and a full-length outdoor patio. The décor features a cherry wood floor-to-ceiling bar, exotic animal mounts and old school conference memorabilia. Boulevard of Roses: People driving through Kenyon on Hwy. 60 are

He was a city employee, and donated his time to care for the roses. The unusual roses attracted so much attention that Harold Severson suggested they plant 100 roses. The new larger display garnered national acclaim, and the Boulevard of Roses was oďŹƒcially dedicated on June 30, 1968. Today, Kenyon city workers care for the roses, burying them beneath
the ground in the fall and unearthing them in the spring. The variety of blooming rose colors and fragrances are well worth a closer look during the summer months. Kenyon Historic Walking Tour: Pick up a guide book at City Hall or an area business and then put your walking shoes for the 2.3 mile trek around town. The walking tour features 28 historic buildings of note, business and residential, and provides detailed information about the history and architecture of each. It also includes a map of Kenyon area churches, many of which are historic in their own right!

According to the Wanamingo Historical Society, the town was named after a heroine of an Indian novel that was popular at the time. The original village began with the platting of 40 acres by James Brown in sections 25 & 26 in 1857. That land is located one-mile west of the present day Wanamingo. In 1903, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Company platted and sold lots for a new town where the present day township is located. With the rail line right in the township, growth came quickly thereafter and Wanamingo incorporated in 1917. In 2003 — with its population then exceeding 1,000 — Wanamingo turned 100, and celebrated with a logo contest and pin, plays and issuing a keepsake calendar. Wanamingo still has an original old log cabin which sits at the south end of Main Street near the old water tower. The Wanamingo Fire Department celebrated a century of service to the community in 2013. : Wanamingo has the honor of being the namesake for Governor Mark Dayton’s German Shepard dog. In 1856, Norwegian immigrant Osmund Osmundson moved to Wheeling Township in Rice County, where he homesteaded at the present site of Nerstrand, building a house and farm. In 1877, he built a store on what became the right-of-way for railroad tracks on what is now Main Street. In 1885, the Minnesota and North Western Railroad (later the Chicago Great Western Railway) was constructed, extending from Lyle, Minnesota to St. Paul, and Osmundson platted the town on the line, naming it af-
ter his hometown of Nedstrand in Norway. Osmundson later became a state legislator. Thorstein Veblen, who grew up just outside of the town, became a nationally renowned sociologist and economist. His farmstead is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nerstrand’s first city hall was built in 1897. A newer one was built in 1907. That building as well as homes belonging to Osmund Osmundson and another famous Nerstrander, Tosten Bonde, are also considered national historic landmarks.

Dennison HisTorY oF DEnnison
A village that originally was part of Warsaw and Northfield townships in Rice County, Dennison was named after Morris P. Dennison, a settler near its site in 1856, on whose land the village was located. The little village was first settled by 1849 and incorporated as a village on December 3, 1904. Dennison became a city in its own right on July 20, 1907. Its post office began in 1885, although there is some confusion as to whether it was named Spring Creek before the post office was established in postmaster Gunnar A. Bonhus’s general store. Dennison himself first visited Minnesota in 1849 from Vermont, brought his family in 1856, and filed a land claim, building a log shanty in the center of the city; he moved to Northfield in 1865 and died there in a farming accident in 1879.

Goodhue County has a rich history of agriculture that began in the late 1800s and continues today. It is a major part of the county’s economy.
Goodhue County Fair August 5-10, 2014 Built on tradition but changing for the future, the Goodhue County Fair had its beginnings way back in 1859. While the early fairs changed locations multiple times, a permanent place was established in 1915 on the north end of Zumbrota. Home to agricultural exhibits from youth and adults, the Goodhue County Fair is a must-see event each August. Farm Facts By the numbers: 1,536 farms working 398,152 acres of land

Here are a few of the Kenyon businesses that offer gift shopping and antiques. When you’re browsing, stop by the Kenyon Country Club for a lunch with a view (in season) or visit the new Schweich’s Hotel, Restaurant and Bar on Second Street and relax on their covered patio. You can wet your whistle at both places, or stop by the newly-renovated Kenyon Muni or the VFW for some conversation and drinks. At the end of the day if you’re too tired to drive home, book a suite at Schweich’s or put your feet up at Dancing Winds Farmstay Retreat, just east of Kenyon. Their relaxing rural setting is a hidden jewel, and the dairy goats will make you smile.
