That was when she became adventuresome and began experimenting with cooking and trying out new fruits and vegetables. Touting the intrinsic benefits of healthy eating beyond just becoming fit, Irwin said organic fruits and vegetables allow the body more energy and enable a person to have an overall happier mood and mindset. “Eat well keeps you calm and feeling good,” Irwin said. “I did grow up eating vegetables, but they were not necessarily the freshest vegetables.” Today she grows strawberries, pole beans, kale, peppers, eggplants, summer squash, Bok Choy, spring onions,

The owner of the lot, Jeff Jandro of PJJ Development, intends to develop the land as a multi-unit apartment complex — and by autumn of this year at the earliest. So Wik put Ginter in touch with the leaders of Peace Lutheran, and luckily everything fell in to place. “Peace Lutheran is much better for accessibility. It’s much more centrally located. I’ve had people tell me how much closer it is to their homes or that they won’t have to drive as far now, Ginter said. “Also, water is more accessible and there’s a playground Peace Lutheran Church in Faribault has offered a permanent home nearby for the kids when their to the displaced Faribault community garden formerly located on parents are working in the gar23rd Street NW. Ginter wants to ensure that the families who used the original community garden, many of whom were Ruth’s House inhabitants, teen moms, or immigrant and lower-income families, are able to get first pick on plots in the new garden. The new garden is significantly bigger than the old space, and Affinity Plus and Peace Lutheran are considering using plots to grow food for local food shelves and donation centers. Ginter and Oachs are accepting volunteers and donations to help with the community garden project. To find out how to help, go to volunteermatch.org and search for “Faribault community garden. “This garden has become bigger than myself, Ginter said. “It really shows that it takes a community to do this. It really shows that this community will come together to help each other out.

But those looking to sell should know that not all home improvement projects will boost the value of a home. Here are six tips when considering investing in home improvement projects: 1. CONSIDER ALL BUYERS The classic example here is installing a swimming pool. A pool could make your home a tougher sell and it’s unlikely you will recover your expenses, says Richard Borges, president of the Appraisal Institute, a professional association of real estate appraisers. It may be a deal-killer for buyers who might not want to take on maintenance costs or safety risks for small children. “It’s not going to contribute a full measure of its cost of installation because its utility is so limited,” Borges says. The principle holds true for other large projects that can alter the structure of the property, such as adding a second garage. In some neighborhoods, they may be a common feature that becomes

3. CONSIDER RISKS OF EXPANDING FOOTPRINT One of the home improvement projects that’s least likely to produce a return on the investment is a room addition that expands the size of a home beyond

cost-value-study, which is based on surveys of real estate agents, can help provide a ballpark reference. You can find it here: www. remodeling.hw.net/2013/costvsvalue/national.aspx That said, when home prices are rising fast enough, like during the last housing boom, it’s easier to recover costs spent on home improvements, regardless of the upgrade. The alternative scenario also holds true. 5. PRIORITIZE REPAIRS AND CURB APPEAL Making the master bedroom bigger or converting a downstairs closet into a half-bath might seem like good investments, but not if you need to upgrade your roof or fix window seals. Those fixes may not be aesthetic upgrades, but often make a home easier to sell. Replacing your front door might cost you $1,500, but it’s the type of upgrade that can make a home attractive to buyers, says Sal Alfano, editorial director of Remodeling magazine. The magazine says replacing the front entry with a 20-gauge steel door is the upgrade from which homeowners can expect to recoup the most money among renovations that cost less than $5,000. The magazine estimates a recovery of 85.6 percent of the cost.

6. CONSULT AN EXPERT Before moving forward on a home improvement project, consult with a real estate agent or an appraiser who knows your market. They should be able to gauge how the upgrade could affect the sales price of your home. That can help you determine how much of your investment you’re likely to recoup. Almost all appraisers are independent and set their own fees. A consultation could cost between $500 and $1,000. For example, if you spend a Real estate agents might be $1,000 on siding, and it only adds willing to offer their assessment $500 to the resale value of your for free, perhaps with the underhome, that upgrade is giving you a standing that they might earn 50 percent return on your invest- your business when it comes time ment. to sell. After Your Summer Fun!

September 2013

By AYN PAVEK Guest columnist The end of the summer season may be fast approaching, but we still have a few weeks to enjoy many of the tastes associated with warmer weather. Gardens and produce departments have an abundance of end-of-summer vegetables just waiting to be added to your meals! With all the readily available fruits and vegetables being harvested from gardens, now is a great time to get in the habit of eating the MyPlate way. Try using these tips to fill half your plate with fruit and vegetables at every meal. Zucchini — Best known for bread, but don’t overlook these other great ways to enjoy zucchini: • Grill it. Thinly slice and grill in an aluminum foil pouch with olive oil, spices and other vegetables. • Add to salads and sauces. Dice and add to summer salads or to pasta sauces. • Replace all or some lasagna noodles with zucchini ribbons. This will drastically lower the carbohydrates and calories in your pasta dish. Tomatoes — Go beyond BLTs and salsa by trying one of these simple ways to serve tomatoes:

• Create a cold salad with quinoa, halved cherry tomatoes, diced cucumbers and chopped green peppers. Toss with olive oil. • Bake tomatoes for a warm side dish. Spray or drizzle a baking dish with olive oil, slice tomatoes about ½-inch thick and sprinkle with whole wheat bread crumbs and shredded Parmesan cheese. Bake until tomatoes start to soften. Peppers — A perfect complement to a variety of dishes. Try one of these ways to eat more peppers: • For extra color, add sliced or diced pepper to your favorite lettuce salad. • Grill them. Brush with olive oil and lightly season for a great way to get in a vegetable serving. • Add to soups, salads, pizza and pasta dishes for added texture and flavor. • Make Philly steak peppers: Fill peppers with thinly-sliced roast beef, onion and provolone cheese. Bake and enjoy with a side of fruit for a meal in minutes.

Potatoes — A fan favorite that can be made healthier with a few simple steps: • Try serving a baked potato bar for upcoming tailgate parties. Be sure to have lots of healthy toppings, chili, salsa, shredded cheese, peppers, chopped ham and Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. • Swap out some of the mayo in your potato salad and cut hundreds of calories from this popular picnic dish. Sweet corn — Think it doesn’t get any better than corn on the cob with butter? Try cooking the corn in the butter (cut with a small amount of olive oil to reduce saturated fat) with lemon and garlic and you may change your mind. With winter weather just on the horizon, it’s time for the annual fall car-care ritual. With money tight, more and more people are looking to take maintenance and repairs into their own hands. With complex machines like cars, it’s not always clear what can be done easily at home and what needs to be done by licensed, knowledgeable, certified professionals.

What You Can Do Getting under your greasy car to change the oil might not be your idea of a great Saturday, but doing it yourself can save a lot of money through the life of your car and guarantee that the job is being done right. You’ll need a few tools before you get started, like an oil filter, a tub for catching old oil, a filter wrench and new oil. Once you have these tools, you can change the oil basically for free. Be sure to follow the recommended manufacturer’s guidelines.

You should check your tire pressure at least once a month. Tires filled to the correct air pressure-labeled on the side of the tire-are more efficient on gas and they are safer on the road. A cheap, small tire pressure gauge can be kept in your glove compartment box. Make a practice of checking the basics on the first of the month when you pay your mortgage or rent.

Getting familiar with the fluids in your car can also save you hassle. You’ll want to check the brake fluid, power steering fluid, oil and windshield wiper fluid on a regular basis. If you check these often, you can spot signs of leaks or problems before they turn into large repair bills. You’ll need some help, but you can also inspect all of your lights, including the turn signals. This is actually good to do at least once a month. In most places, it is illegal to drive with broken headlights, taillights

or turn signals, so this ritual can save you from being pulled over one night.

What You Might Want a Mechanic to Do Depending upon your expertise, you might be able to inspect and repair many other areas of your car. For those with little expertise or time, it might be best to have a professional deal with the following:

How to prevent motion sickness when traveling StatePoint Media Traveling this season? Whether your dream of the perfect vacation involves sandy beaches, long country drives, cobblestoned streets or endless vineyards, it probably doesn’t include nausea. Unfortunately motion sickness, which is caused by a discrepancy between the movement one sees and the movement one feels, is an all-too prevalent experience. Symptoms can range from mild unpleasantness to debilitating queasiness. Either way it can really put a damper on a trip. Wherever you’re going, and however you’re getting there, take steps to prevent motion sickness before it starts:

• Sit where there’s the least motion. In cars, drive or sit in the front passenger’s seat. On ships, combat sea sickness by reserving a cabin in the front or middle of the ship, or on the upper deck. By plane, ask for a seat over the wing. By train, take a seat near the front and next to a window, facing forward. • Focus on the horizon or on a distant, stationary object. Keep your head still, while resting against a seat back. • Acupressure, the stimulation of specific points throughout the body, can provide comfort and nausea relief. Consider using drug-free acupressure wrist bands during travel. For example, Psi Bands, found at most drug stores such as CVS/Pharmacy and Rite Aid, can be worn at the first sign

of nausea or just prior to travel. More information can be found at www.PsiBands.com. • Don’t smoke or sit near smokers. Get fresh air if possible. Crack a window, go on deck or open an air vent. • Avoid spicy and greasy foods and alcohol. Don’t overeat. Opt for simple foods, such as dry crackers. Drink a carbonated beverage to help settle your stomach. While you can’t control every aspect of your journey, such as flight delays, traffic and the weather, there are some things you do have the power to control. On your next vacation, make the prevention of motion sickness a top priority. Bon voyage!

In instances where a blowout does occur, run-flat tires can handle the sudden deflation better than standard tires, allowing drivers to maintain stability. Because the technology is relatively new, run-flat tires do pose some problems. Run-flat tires are heavier, adding to the vehicle’s weight and using more gas. According to some consumers, run-flat tires do not last nearly as long as standard tires. Replacements typically cost more than standard tires and are not readily available at all shops. In some cases, run-flat tires can be repaired, but finding a shop with the equipment and knowledge to do so can be difficult.

As run-flat tires become more commonplace, the problems with them will no doubt be worked out. In the meantime, consumers may want to take the purchase of a vehicle with run-flat tires into serious consideration. If you’ve got one that’s

six years old or older, it’s time to get a new one-even if it has low miles. As tires age, a degradation process takes place. Tire tread separation can result-the tread comes away from the tire in an instant-and an accident can occur even if the tire has low miles on it. Of course, age isn’t the only consideration when thinking about your tires. Factors such as wear, maintenance, storage and weather are also important to take note of. The good thing about older tires-as opposed to old fruit-is that you can return them for a refund up to a point. If you’ve got a tire that’s six years old, you’ve got, to keep up with the fruit analogy, a lemon. If you bought it six years ago, you’re out of luck and need to buy a replacement right away. However, if you’ve got tires considerably older than the date you bought them on, you may be in luck. Take your receipt to the place you bought the tire from and see what they can do. Depending upon the tire’s wear and the age discrepancy, you may get anywhere from a partial to a full discount on its replacement.

? Do You Have AreFlat Tire? Your Ti Nail In

Keep An Eye Out For Spooks By Tresa Erickson AdBuilder You get a real kick out of Halloween. You take great pain in decorating your house for the event and wait eagerly at your door for all of the costumed kids to stop by for a treat. Although you stock up on candy and do your best to have enough, sometimes you run out and that means a quick trip to the store on one of the busiest days of the year. This year in your candy run, keep in mind that trick-or-treaters are out and drive carefully. In spite of all the safety reminders, kids sometimes forget to play it safe when out and about on Halloween night. In the midst of their excitement, they cross the middle of a street rather than at the corner, weave in and out of parked cars, and scamper around without watching for motorists. Along with this, some kids wear masks that obscure their vision, making it difficult for them to see motorists, while others fail to wear reflective strips on their costumes, making it difficult for motorists to see them. It is up to you, the driver, to watch out for all of the little ones. Before you go anywhere, make sure the brakes on your car are working properly. Over time, brakes wear out. Symptoms of faulty brakes include the car pulling to one side when braking, the brake pedals feeling mushy, pulsating or grinding when braking, and the need to add brake fluid constantly. If you have experienced any of these problems, don’t pull out of your driveway. Use your spouse’s car or have a friend go get the candy. Don’t take a chance on your brakes failing you when you need them the most.

PAGE 15

Always Free Tire Repair No matter where you bought your tires!

Check the lights on your car as well. Make sure they are in working order. If you have a headlight out, fix it or use someone else’s car. Don’t take a chance on that one source of light illuminating your way. You could just miss something in the dark shadows. If your lights and brakes are in good condition, take a couple of minutes to wipe down your windshield. This will ensure maximum visibility. Then back out of your driveway slowly and

make your way down the street cautiously, watching for trick-ortreaters. Be extra careful when exiting and entering. Trick-ortreaters will definitely be making their way up and down driveways and may even congregate there. You may only be making a short trip to the grocery store, but on Halloween night, such a trip can be full of peril. Exercise caution and you will return safe and sound with candy intact long before the night is over.
