NEED TO KNOW

Kirsten Elstad — The senior co-captain had 154 kills for the Huskies in 2012, good for fourth on the team, and the highest amount coming back. Elstad’s 47.2 percent on kill attempts led Owatonna last year, as did her .362 hitting percent. Defensively, Elstad led the Huskies with 40 solo blocks and 53 total blocks. Kaylea Ahrens — Offensively, the junior doesn’t put up splashy stats, and considering her role as libero, Ahrens isn’t asked to do so. But Ahrens can create some momentum, evidenced by her team-high 42 serving aces last year. Ahrens also specializes in receiving, whether serves or kill attempts. With 474 digs in 2012, Ahrens nearly doubled the next Husky.

OUTLOOK

Not since 2009 have the Huskies lost a Big Nine Conference match. Despite the loss of several key pieces over the last two years, Owatonna has managed to not just claim conference bragging rights, but section championships as well. The loss of six seniors, and much of the attacking offense from last year, this might be the season where Owatonna finds itself somewhere other than the top of the Big Nine. Of course, that’s been said a lot over the last three-plus years. But until it actually happens, count on more wins.

NEED TO KNOW

Kalley Schwab — As a two-time state qualifier, Schwab’s selection as a senior captain should come as no surprise. And, according to coach Isaiah Fuller, Schwab could threaten OHS records in both the six- and 11-dive competitions Madison Eggermont and Ana Moe — The other two captains for the Huskies are both sprinters, excelling in shorter distances. Eggermont, a senior, and Moe, a junior, are both threats at school records as well.

OUTLOOK

A young but talented team has a chance to fill a lot of gaps left after four key graduations have given coach Isaiah Fuller a roster built for the future. Kalley Schwab is a two-tie state diving entrant, and should make it three this season. The rest of the girls have the ability to score, it will just be a matter of how much.

COACHSPEAK

We (on average) are a very young team that has a lot of potential. It will be tough this year as we lost a lot of top-end talent in last years graduating class but I believe we are going to be deeper in more events because of the younger athletes. I am very excited to see what can happen this season. — OHS coach Isaiah Fuller

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS

Owatonna senior Gabby Tellijohn

NEED TO KNOW

The seniors — Seven girls are in their final season for the Huskies, and most, if not all, will play key roles in the success of the team. Led by Anna Rahrick, the Senior Seven have years of experience, both as individuals as well as on doubles teams. Rahrick started the season off strong, going 2-0 at the Lakeville North Invitational. Briana Hartmann — The only junior of the bunch, Hartmann is a returning state qualifier and should the the Huskies’ No. 1 singles player all season. Hartmann started off the season going 1-1 at the Lakeville North Invitational.

ROSTER

SCHEDULE

Seniors Emily Buryska, Katie Eckard, Elizabeth Frandle, Valerie Griffin, Anna Rahrick, Gabriele Tellijohn, Aliyah Waypa Juniors Briana Hartmann Sophomores Meretta Hansen, Paige Janka, Grace McClintlock, Tessa Rahrick, Carline Reebie, Meghan Schuler, Ava Stockwell, Macey Tellijohn, Ashley Ulman, Millie Wanous, Madison Zulk Freshmen Caitlyn Anderson, Laura Castrillion, Annabelle Paquin, Margaret Schlicker, Katherine Segler, Grace Simon Seventh graders Emily Rahrick

Aug. 20 vs. Northfield, 10 a.m. Aug. 22 vs. Waseca, 10 a.m. Aug. 23 at Chanhassen, 9 a.m. Aug. 27 vs. Rochester JM, 4:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at Albert Lea, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 3 vs. Mankato West, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Rochester Century, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10 vs. Mankato East, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at Winona, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Rochester JM Invite 9 a.m. Sept. 17 vs. Austin, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Rochester Mayo, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at Litchfield Invite, 9 a.m. Sept. 24 at Faribault, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Big Nine Tournament (Rochester), 9 a.m.

OUTLOOK

It will likely be Rochester Mayo, Rochester Century, and everybody else. Again. The two Rochester schools are powerhouses, and upsetting one or both usually proves to be too difficult. But Hartmann has a chance to return to state, and the doubles teams could have that opportunity as well after a strong showing in Lakeville to open the season. But with so much player movement in the postseason, accurate predictions are hard to come by.

COACHSPEAK

“Overall, I’m very pleased,” OHS coach Curt Matejcek said. “I was telling the coaching staff on the bus that it was better to leave (Lakeville) 2-0 than 0-2.”. — OHS coach Curt Matjcek after the Huskies first matches of the season August 19.

OWATONNA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER & VOLLEYBALL

NEED TO KNOW

Madison Worke — As the team’s primary setter for the third straight year, Worke sets the offensive tone for the Awesome Blossoms, evidenced by her team-high 681 set assists last season. The junior also led Blooming Prairie in serving percentage and ranked second in blocks and fourth in kills. Taylor Hagen — The junior middle hitter makes her presence felt on both sides of the ball, as she led the Awesome Blossoms in kills and racked up 197 blocks last season. As Coach Gina McLaughlin put it: “We will look for her to hassle our opponents’ best hitters and put the ball away for us on offense.”

OUTLOOK

Coming off a banner 21-win season, the program’s most wins since 1999 and second-most in school history, the Awesome Blossoms should not miss a beat in 2013. Blooming Prairie returns a host of starters, many whom anchored their banner season a year ago, and brings in new talent expected to contribute. Look for Coach Ginga McLaughlin’s squad to be in the top tier of the Gopher Conference, where Bethlehem Academy holds serve as the reigning champ, as well as state championships the last two seasons.

Blue skies Sky-high expectations follow Owatonna

football team as 2013 season draws near By JON WEISBROD

jweisbrod@owatonna.com

OWATONNA — There are expectations, and then there are Owatonna high school football expectations. A year after steamrolling through the regular season and bullying their way to the Class AAAAA state title game, the bar has been set a little higher for 2013. Make that a lot higher. For the 2013 Huskies, “good enough” simply won’t be good enough. After losing 49-21 to Totino-Grace in the 2012 championship game and watching the Eagles move up a classification this offseason, Owatonna inevitably finds itself as the undisputed favorite to take home the state title this fall. Senior lineman Andrew Stelter put it perfectly. “It was a great season (last year) but I still think of it as not great enough in a way,” the 6-foot-4, 270-pound shade-making defensive end/offensive tackle said after practice Tuesday, Aug. 20. “We strive to be perfect and that’s what we want to shoot for.” On a grand scale, perfection can be quite daunting, even for a loaded team like the Huskies. Instead, Owatonna’s goals are modest, keeping every practice, scrimmage and game in perspective. “We try to get better day by day,” newly minted starting quarterback Ian Langeberg said. “Our coaches prepare us for each individual step. Right now, we are preparing for the scrimmages (at Lakeville) on Saturday and then the next week we will be preparing for (Rochester) Mayo.” Added senior Luke Wanous: “We are just trying to go out there and prepare for week one, one day at a time, and try to win a football game. The coaches are putting is in situations to succeed.” Meticulous preparation, a singular focus and sharp execution have kept this team humble and hungry, yet tremendously danger-

ous at the same time. There are still a number of positions to shore up before the regular season kicks off Aug. 30 against Rochester Mayo. “It’s been an interesting deal,” Owatonna coach Jeff Williams said. “We’ve got a lot of individuals that we know can play and have earned a spot, but we also have several positions that are up for grabs. I don’t think there is a greater motivator than the internal drive to get better because of competition.” Owatonna returns several cornerstones of a defense that that recorded four shutouts last season. Talent spreads across every corner of the unit as well, led by future University of Minnesota lineman Stelter, who verbally committed to Jerry Kill and the Gophers a couple months ago. The decision couldn’t have come at a better time either. “The main reason I decided to make my college choice before the season (is) because I just want to focus on this year and focus on being a great leader and not have to worry about going out there and feeling like I need to impress people,” he said. “I’m just going to go out and play ball.” Behind Stelter is a deep and talented stable of linebackers and defensive backs that will no doubt cause headaches for opposing offenses. Seniors Ty Sullivan and Wanous spearhead the group that appears to be right on track as twoa-days slog forward during the predictably steamy August afternoons. “I like where we are at, but it’s never good enough,” Sullivan said. “We are coming along pretty well as a defensive unit. We are communicating and meshing together with the guys. The new guys are stepping right in and playing well too.” On offense, Langeberg steps into the vacated starting quarterback slot that was retained by Colton Shock for the last two-plus seasons. For Langeberg, filling the shoes of a record-setting quarterback has been a relatively smooth transition.

“Playing behind Colton was awesome,” Langeberg said. “He did everything well and went about the game well, but I’m not trying to be Colton. I’m just trying to be me and do me the best I can. Taking up the new role and taking over as a leader is always a challenge but I have a great group around me.” Assisting Langeberg on offense will be Aaron Peterson at running back. As a junior in 2012, the slippery speedster carried the ball 250 times for a whopping 1,536 yards, which broke the school’s seasonsingle mark by almost 80 yards. At receiver, Sullivan will pitch in on offense as much as possible as the senior will serve as the team’s every down safety/linebacker. “I am going to play as much as I possibly can on offense,” Sullivan said. “I’ll be playing every snap on defense and doing everything I can to help out on offense.” But as much talent as the Huskies have, the team won’t enter the season without a few question marks, the biggest of which will be on the offensive line. Outside of Stelter at left tackle, OHS must replace every position across the line. “I don’t think we are going to have as much size as we had last season, but we will make up for that in athleticism,” Williams said. “But (replacing) lineman seams to be a pretty regular occurrence for us. It’s always a pretty seamless transition.” According to Williams, the four captains — Stelter, Sullivan, Wanous and Langeberg — have played a major roll in bringing along some of the younger players while also staying connected to the veterans. “Our captains have great credibility,” Williams said. “Their leadership on this team isn’t contrived either. They are genuinely the four guys that everyone looks up to.” Reach sports reporter Jon Weisbrod at 444-2375, or follow him on Twitter.com @OPPJonW

10 Spot

There are eight weeks in the high sch around here as Zero Week has yet to rea will find the 2013 schedules for each o to parse through those lists, the rest of t which game could be the cream of the might not be right every week. But, it’

Why you should go: You mean, other than the fact that you can catch a Thursday game in the first week of the season? Being able to double-up on games should be enough, but, if not, how about getting familiar with an old face? These two teams have not met since 2006, a 21-7 win for the Tigers. With the shuffling of the Gopher Conference, this meeting should become an annual one. Besides, the Tigers had one of their best seasons in recent years in 2012. Can it carry over?

Why you should go: The Spartans were the last Big Nine team to beat the Huskies, and that was in week eight. In 2011. That was the only conference loss for OHS that season, and they went undefeated in the Big Nine last year. Owatonna also beat Mayo twice in 2012, including a 49-28 shellacking in the Section 1AAAAA championship game. The Huskies are heavy favorites in the Big Nine again this year. Do they have what it takes?

Week 4

Why you should go: Despite losing twice to Owatonna in 2012, Winona was able to give the Huskies fits during the first game. The Winhawks put up 33 points in that early October game, the third-most any team scored against the Huskies all season. Things were different in the Section 1AAAAA semifinals as OHS rolled, 43-14. But Winona had the look of an up-and-comer last year. And if you go, maybe you can stay on the river and catch a Saturday matinee with Triton and Cotter playing at noon in the same city Saturday.

Why you should go: Mankato West, a powerhouse in Class AAAA, moved up a class last year, and the reward was a state quarterfinal against Owatonna. The Huskies defense swarmed the Scarlets, leading to a 28-0 win for OHS. West will be a year better, especially under center, but so will the Owatonna defense. This game could prove to be the difference between the top two spots in the Big Nine. And if the two meet again in November, a state title would be up for grabs.

Why you should go: These two teams finished No. 7 in the final state rankings last year, though in different classes. The Buccaneers, a class AA school, will be looking to improve on a section semifinal loss that ended a promising season. The Awesome Blossoms, a Class A school, lost a section final last season. This game could be a benchmark to see if one, both or neither are state-tournament quality teams. And both are likely to be ranked in the Top 10. Again.

Week 7

Why you should go: Mankato Loyola has had a rough go of it in recent years, but did give Blooming Prairie one heck of a game in 2012. The Awesome Blossoms gave up three scores to the Crusaders in a 27-21 victory. Those 21 points were the most the Crusaders scored in one game last year. Granted, on paper, this game looks to be more like the blowouts that have defined the series in recent years. But there is always the chance for a trap game, and Loyola knows it can play close.

Why you should go: This year, the Battle for the Paddle will take place near the end of the season, instead of week one like last year. In 2012, it took overtime for the Cardinals to come out on top, 20-14. The Paddle has not been in Medford since 2009, but four of the last five games have been decided by seven points or fewer. In fact, with the exception of the Cardinals’ 36-0 win in 2011, neither team has scored more than 20 points. Defenses show up for this one.

Week 8

Why you should go: Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial entered this game last year ranked No. 10 in Class A. The 36-0 drubbing of NRHEG was the last win of the year for the Knights. This game has been close in recent years, with a one-point LCWM win in 2011, and a three-point Panthers win in 2010. Those games were on the heels of two NRHEG routs, however, something the Panthers will be looking to get back to doing.

Why you should go: Both of these teams had bigger plans that what unfolded last year, so a late-season matchup between the two could make or break section seeding, especially in Maple River’s case. The two programs have not met in at least a decade, and the game will be yet another step up in class for the Awesome Blossoms. A win really helps the Blossoms look good in the eyes of section coaches who will be the ones to select Blooming Prairie’s seed.

Why you should go: The Rockets were able to put some points on the board last year, posting 30 or more points in five of their six wins. But in three losses, including a 30-19 loss to OHS in week three, the Rockets scored no more than 20 points. It’s a long way off, but this game could also cap a second-straight undefeated Big Nine season for the Huskies, and it comes after Owatonna plays three straight opponents it should handle.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE

BLOOMING PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL NEED TO KNOW

Blooming Prairie junior quarterback John Rumpza.

John Rumpza — The junior quarterback showed last year, in his first season as a starter, that his name belongs on the list of great Blooming Prairie quarterbacks. Where, exactly, he ends up on that list will figure itself out over the next two years. Hunter Rudlong and Ryan Doerhoefer — These two seniors earned honorable mention all-conference last season, and they’ll likely take the step up to all-conference this year. Rudlong will look to become one of Rumpza’s favorite targets as a wide receiver while Doerhoefer will be tasked with keeping Rumpza clean as one of the Blossoms many athletic linemen.

OUTLOOK

The Section 1A championship game seems to have a spot reserved for Blooming Prairie. No matter the personnell, the Awesome Blossoms somehow make their way to the title game. This year should be no different. The loss of four starters will be felt, but the return of at least seven starters on each side of the ball will be more important. Look for the Blossoms to use the arm of John Rumpza, and the legs of Cole Sunde and others to balance an attack that most teams in the state, let alone the are, will be able to stop.

A tough HVL took its toll on the Cobras last season, in both football and volleyball. Triton managed to finish 7-3 in football, but suffered a crushing 53-0 loss to Caledonia in the Section 1A semifinals. An average-sized senior class will be boosted by a large and talented junior class that probably doesn’t remember much of 2012, and most certainly has little recollection of the year before, when the Cobras started a very un-Triton like 0-4 before ripping off four straight wins. The Triton volleyball team closed 2012 at 13-16, including a straight-sets loss to Cannon Falls in the first round of the Section 1A tournament. Just a year after one of their best seasons in history, the Cobras were routed by the top of the HVL, though more experience will be on hand in 2013.

NEED TO KNOW

Luke VanZuilen — The senior will be joined in the defensive backfield by a trio that should help the Tigers shut down a few of the vaunted passing attacks that populate the Gopher Conference. But VanZuilen is also a threat in the offensive backfield where he and Isaias Ramirez combine to be a powerful duo. AJ Chappuis — Taking over for two-year starter Kade Cronin, Chappuis, who is also a cornerback, will lead Medford’s rushing attack from under center. A star on the baseball diamond, Chappuis certainly has the arm to throw if needed, but the Tigers will rely on the junior signal-caller to make the handoff, and keep when needed.

OUTLOOK

A 4-2 mark in the Gopher Conference was a big step up for the Tigers in 2012, and the way they played against Bethlehem Academy, a state finalist, in game one was a clue of things to come. Medford lost that game, 20-14, it set in motion a season that saw the Tigers beat two Top 10 teams in Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, and perennial power Adrian. Of course, the Tigers did lose twice to Gopher Conference rival WEM, including a 34-21 loss in the section semifinals. But the Tigers have some momentum into 2013, and that means something.

We hope to finish with a winning record and take it one game at a time. Offensively we will take what the defense gives us. We pride ourselves on being very versatile. Defensively we will attack you. — Coach Dan Stork

Dillon Parpart — Dillon started at tight end last season, and linebacker the last three seasons. Led the team with 99 tackles and 5 sacks. He is a very physical player. Keith Maxon — Started every game at center as a sophomore. Very strong and athletic linemen. Nic Goette — Started at left tackle for us as a sophomore. At 6’3” 295l pounds, Nic is big and athletic. He has very good feet. Noah Krell — Very smart and intense linemen. Carlie Wagner — Carlie, a 3 year starter for NRHEG brings a lot to the table for us. What people tend to overlook is her competiveness, she wants to win so much it carries over to her teammates bringing their game to the next level. She is a powerful middle hitter who lead us in kills, blocks, and digs last season. Paige Overgaard — Paige started for us last year as an outside hitter. Her attack is hard to read which allows her to get the kill. She is a very versatile player who may see some time playing all the way around this season. Hannah Lundberg — Hannah’s scrappiness is her best contribution to the team. She will never give up on the ball and is always giving her best effort. Anna Stork — Anna is going to be a big help this season spreading our hitters across the net. She is a strong lefty, who will turn some heads this year. All comments from coach Onika Peterson

NEED TO KNOW

The seniors — A very good 2012 ended earlier than anyone in royal blue and silver expected it to. But coach Matt Roddy is in an enviable position with 12 players returning for their final season. And with thin classes below them, the senior class will be tasked with leading the Huskies deeper into the playoffs than the section semifinals, where they lost 1-0 to Farmington. Haley Paulson and Payton Noble — Last year, the two OHS goaltenders split time between the posts, and they could do so again this year. Not much is lost when the two seniors make the switch, and having two experienced netminders can only be a good thing. In that section final loss to Farmington, Paulson made one save while Noble made six, giving the Huskies every chance to win the game.

Seth Huseby — The junior has been part of two state meet teams, and with at least five spots up for grabs, Huseby could be an anchor for a team deep in numbers, but shallow on varsity experience. Nick Rethemeir — The defending Big Nine champion in the 800 meters is back for his senior year. Rethemeier is also a hold-over from last year’s team that won three invitationals while taking three seconds, a third and an impressive 18th at the 100-team Griak Invitational. David Chatelaine — Beginning his 23rd season as head coach, Chatelaine has led the Huskies to nine Big Nine titles and 10 state appearances.

Rochester Century and Winona are expected to push the Huskies, who are in pursuit of a seventh-straight Big Nine championship.

NEED TO KNOW

Jared Santibanez — The sophomore was electric at times for the Huskies in 2012, even while the opposition thought the football they were playing was the sport with shoulder pads. Offensively gifted, Santibanez will be relied on early until the rest of the offense gets comfortable in some new roles. Carter McCauley — The last line of defense, McCauley will enter his junior year in a bit of a tough spot. While coach Bob Waypa loves the overall talent on the roster, the players directly in front of McCauley will be almost entirely new to the expanded role of starter. That could leave McCauley facing more shots than normal. But after some spectacular saves last year, there is no doubt he’s up to it.

OUTLOOK

With the program’s first state tournament appearance now in the rearview mirror, it will be up to the Huskies to capitalize on any momentum left over from a historic 2012. Eleven players from that team have graduated, however, leaving a bit of a leadership vacuum that will have to be filled for this team to realize its potential. With early games against Apple Valley, Lakeville North, Lakeville South and Northfield, the Huskies will be tested. But Waypa is looking for improvement in those games, not necessarily wins.

NEED TO KNOW

Ian Langerberg — In his final season, Langeberg will take the reins of a potent Owatonna offense, one that rewrote the record books in 2012 behind Colton Schock. Along with Sam Fenske and Aaron Peterson, who has a chance to set career rushing records, the Huskies should once again be formidable on offense. The defense — The points allowed last year are a bit skewed as the starters didn’t touch the field in the second half of three games, and were held out of a few more fourth quarters. With nearly every important piece back from a dominant 2012 unit, OHS could be looking at back-to-back section titles.

OUTLOOK

Rochester Mayo and Rochester John Marshall should be both Big Nine Conference and Section 1AAAAA threats for the Huskies. Mankato West, who is in a different section, will also be formidable. But Owatonna lost very little compared to the two Rochester schools, and should be the favorite to run the table in the Big Nine. And, should the Huskies make a Prep Bowl run like they did in 2012, Totino-Grace, who beat OHS in the Class AAAAA title game, won’t be waiting. The Eagles moved up to Class AAAAAA, giving the Huskies and the rest of the class a little better chance at a state championship.
