The “cathedral idea” was in the air at the time Henry Benjamin Whipple became Minnesota’s first Episcopal Bishop in 1859. According to Whipple, this was the first Episcopal church in the US to be built as a cathedral. Built 1862–1869, it is the oldest cathedral in Minnesota. The architect was James Renwick, Jr., who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and the Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington, D.C.

Minnesota state acaDeMies for the Deaf & blinD Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858. In that year, during the session of the first state legislature, definite action was taken looking toward the establishment of a school for the deaf children of Minnesota. The Honorable George E. Skinner, one of Faribault’s representatives in the state legislature, asked that a “deaf and dumb asylum” be located in Faribault. The legislature decided that this institution should be located in Faribault if the citizens of the town would provide 40 acres of land within two miles of town for a site. The academies are still in operation today and are highly respected centers of education.

general store, harness shop, jail, bank and barber shop, among others. Or, view the Historical Society’s portion of the Whipple Collection, dedicated to Bishop Henry B. Whipple, the first Episcopal bishop of Minnesota, who founded Faribault’s Cathedral of Our Merciful Savior, Shattuck, St. Mary’s and St. James Schools. The display contains articles from the Whipple home, as well as artifacts given to him by American Indians. Homage is also paid to Faribault native and later hero, rail r T Minnesota Gophers only Heisman Bruce Smith, ethe gg Ca Trophy winner. Smith was captain of the 1941 national champion University of Minnesota football team and a member of the team when they won the crown in 1940. He was named to 13 All-American teams, played professional football with the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Rams, and was named to the National Football Hall of Fame in 1970. The museum’s permanent collection includes some of Smith’s university memorabilia and a replica of the Heisman Trophy. The museum also features several evolving displays, which might include military memorabilia, industrial artifacts, clothing and household artifacts. Admission to the museum, which is wheelchair-accessible, is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, $1 for children under 13, and members are admitted free of charge. Group tours are available by appointment. Some buildings may be toured only by appointment. There is a gift shop with souvenirs.

Discover nearly 750 acres of forest, prairies, river and ponds with ten miles of hiking and biking trails; five miles of cross-country skiing; an observation deck; and “Windows on the Wild” back yard bird habitat in a year-round Interpretive Center. Public programs and events offered year round. River Bend is part of the “Big Woods”. River Bend Nature Center is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is “to help people discover, enjoy, understand, and preserve the incredible natural world that surrounds us.” To learn more visit their web site at www.rbnc.org.

A four-season, six-acre city park, located at 900 Lyndale Avenue North for dogs and their owners is now complete! The focal point of the park is a 1/4 mile chip trail bordering a pond. This site was chosen for its natural setting by an official task force appointed by the Faribault City Council.

America’s first Cave-aged blue cheese. In 1854 a German immigrant named Gottfried Fleckenstein began using the natural sandstone caves along the Straight River for brewing and storing beer. The largest natural cave (still in use today) was enlarged in 1936, then entirely new caves were hand hewn from the sandstone rock beginning in 1938.

Today, in a historic mill nestled along the Cannon River in Minnesota, a nearly 150-yearold story is still being woven. The Faribault Woolen Mill endures as one of the last vertical woolen mills in America. Here, fifth generation craftspeople take raw wool and create blankets, throws, scarves and accessories of remarkable comfort and quality. Irreplaceable century-old machinery stands side by side with modern technology in our “new” mill, which was built in 1892.

Come back and visit

Faribault

F-Town is excited to be bringing brewing back to the historic downtown Faribault. Located just across the Straight River from one of the area’s original breweries in downtown Faribault, F-Town will reignite, pursue to perfect, and blaze a new trail of brewing high quality beer that began in this town in 1856.
