T

he tradition of clinking your silverware against a glass to signal the newlyweds to kiss has been around for decades, but for many couples the old tradition does not fit them as a couple. Here are some creative, quirky, and cute ways other couples have put their own twist on a classic tradition:

“At our wedding, the guests could get a question from our DJ. If the question was answered correctly we’d kiss. The questions were all about us (i.e. “What’s the bride and groom’s favorite place for date night?” “Where will the bride and groom live after the wedding?” We had some easier, more obvious questions, and made some of them more difficult to challenge our guests.” – Amanda, Mankato

“It is our intent, at our wedding in October, to have a guest toast the bride and groom, family, and friends in exchange for a kiss. We have created table cards for each guest. Their name will be written on the front of the card and a suggestion for a toast will be written on the back to make it even easier for them!” – Heather, Milwaukee “At our wedding, we gave the DJ a container with all the names of couples that attended our wedding reception and each time people started clinking glasses, the DJ pulled a couple out of the bowl and the couple had to do a kind of kiss that we (the newlyweds) had to replicate. It got the crowd laughing at some of the things people came up with!” – Stephanie, Inver Grove Heights “At our wedding, guests could rouse a kiss from the newlyweds by singing a song for us. My favorite was a dear elderly neighbor, who grabbed the microphone, walked up to our head table and sang, “ I love you much, I love you do, and now I’ll do a jig for you!” And then he proceeded to do a little jig, dance for us. The guests gave him a round of applause.” – Angela from Waterville “At my brother’s wedding, they had a pedal John Deere tractor. When someone wanted the bride and groom to kiss, she had to get on the tractor and pedal across the floor in front of the head table. It was the best when my other brother finished his best man’s speech by getting on the tractor and pedaling across!” – Melissa, Plymouth Elizabeth Jacobs graduated in 2012 from Winona State University with a focus in photojournalism and marketing. She is currently working as a freelance writer and photographer based out of Plymouth.

Choosing a hue for the bridesmaid gowns

ridesmaids are an important part of the wedding party, and most brides opt to have a handful of close friends and family members play a special role in the wedding. Choosing a gown and a color that will flatter all of the bridesmaids typically takes a little work. An overwhelming majority of couples choose to have a formal wedding. The average number of bridesmaids for these formal weddings is four. Considering around two million weddings take place in North America every year, that’s a lot of bridesmaids for whom gowns and other attire must be planned. Many bridesmaids worry about the gowns they will wear come the big day. Horrible bridesmaid dresses have been the butt of jokes for years, and many people have their own stories of garish gowns they’ve been asked to don for a wedding. Some have said that brides intentionally choose ugly gowns for their bridesmaids to ensure they’re not outshined come the wedding day. Although this may be the case for some, most brides aspire to select gowns that will be flattering for all. And color scheme is integral in the choice of gown. Every well-planned wedding carries a color scheme throughout. This includes the color a bride selects for her bridesmaids to wear. But not every color accentuates everyone’s features. Therefore, some experimentation might be necessary to find a color that is flattering to all and fits with the color scheme. Depending on hair color and skin shade, there are many flattering hues available for gowns. When making this decision, consider bridesmaids’ ethnicity and skin tone. African-American:Women with dark skin and hair may really shine in jewel-colored gowns, including silver, gold, purple and salmon. Very pale colors may be

daring and conspicuous. Asian and olive-skinned women: Those with a slight yellow tone to their skin will look good in many colors, including red, navy, peach, and fuchsia. However, avoid colors in light yellow, aqua, gray, taupe, or mint, which may make the bridesmaid look washed out. Fair skin:Ladies with pale skin will benefit from richly colored gowns in jewel tones. Pastels may work, but be careful about those depending on hair color. Pink or red-hued gowns may clash with someone with auburn hair. Yellow and green may not work with a fair brunette. Gray and silver may wash out someone who is pale and blonde. Once a color is chosen, brides also need to consider the season. Certain colors may look out of place depending on the season. For example, an evergreen or deep blue may seem wintry during a summer wedding. Similarly, russet or brown may work for the autumn but not for a spring wedding. Many brides gravitate toward mid-level blues, greens, pinks and purples for their weddings, simply because those colors transcend the seasons. After colors are worked out, the style of the gown deserves consideration. Because not every bridesmaid has the same physical attributes, many brides are now open to selecting a color and length and allowing the bridesmaid herself to choose the exact style. This way someone who is busty won’t feel uncomfortable in strapless, and someone who is thin won’t be overwhelmed by a lot of ruffles. The intent is to have bridesmaids feel beautiful and comfortable, and different styles can help achieve this. Making the effort to choose a gown color and style that is flattering to all in the bridal party will help the ladies feel they are truly a special part of the wedding.

Often overlooked and hardly seen, shoes are the underrated piece of a stunning bridal ensemble. They can be the most important aspect of bridal comfort from the time you walk ceremoniously down the aisle all the way through the last dance of the night.

C

hoosing your dream gown is difficult enough, so don’t sweat the small stuff on your shoes. You can be both functional and fashionable when selecting a shoe that matches your dress.

Always measure You may be attracted to a special online deal that you come across, but be sure to have an accurate measurement before making your final purchase. Measuring is also important for your bridal shop consultant. Once you have your shoes, wear them for your dress fitting. This way, your dressmaker will know know the exact height of your shoes so she can adjust your dress accordingly.

Comfort first You will likely be on your feet for most of your wedding day, so opt for comfort first. What good are your shoes if your feet are blistered at the end of the night? Choosing a high spiky heel may sound like a good idea for giving you a bit of extra height, but won’t seem so enticing after you catch a heel in your dress.

24

Color scheme correlated A lot of brides are choosing to go with a colored wedding shoe that either matches the color of their bridesmaids’ dresses or correlates with the overall color scheme of their wedding. This pretty little touch adds a subtle pop of color that many brides feel takes their look to the next level. Choosing a colored shoe opens the door to many different styles and also allows you to add some personality to your look.

Match your theme Are you going with a country wedding that will be most easily navigated on a pair of wedges? How about a big city event that you may decide to brave high heels? The nature of your venue and event deserve consideration during your shoeshopping experience.

Practice makes perfect Don’t wait until your special day to give your shoes a test run. Wear them around the house for a couple hours per week leading up to the wedding. This will help them break in and get your feet used to them, as well.

to save on the big day By Elizabeth Jacobs

T

o couples planning their wedding, every detail is important. And the cost of those details can add up. The average cost for a wedding in Minnesota, according to a TheKnot.com survey of 16,000 brides, was $31,000. For couples who are planning their wedding on a budget or just trying to save money, here are 5 tips to help keep the price of the big day under control.

Tip #1: Skip the wedding favors Skipping the wedding favors can save on average $289, according to U.S. News. Jessica Tano, owner of Everly Lace, sees these items often left behind by guests at the end of the night. “A great way to save money is to not do a favor, which can cost $3-$5 a piece,” says Tano, who has decorated over 350 weddings, “Instead, a lot of brides are not doing favors or doing a favor station.”

Tip #2: Avoid peak wedding season and times May through September is the most popular time to get married in Minnesota, according to Erin Lafferty, director of sales and catering at the New Ulm Conference Center. Planning a wedding in October through April can save you around 25%.

Tip #3: Find a Unique Location Using places that do not usually hold weddings, such as parks, orchards, or galleries can be a great find financially and give your guests a unique experience. Picking the right venue can also cut the price of decorating as well.

“Think of locations in the area that are not the norm for weddings,” say Tano. “There are a lot of hidden venues, if you do your research.”

Tip #4: Choose alterative food and drinks Simpler food choices, such as pastas or BBQ chicken rather than steak and seafood can save money and fill guests up. Another great idea is having a signature cocktail instead of a full bar, since some venues charge you for what they need to stock for your wedding or every bottle they open. “Plated meals or buffets give you more bang for your buck,” said Lafferty, who has been in the industry for 15 years. Lafferty has seen other couples host later receptions and skip the main course, substituting appetizers and drinks. Friday night weddings can save on the location and the menu.

Tip #5: DIY Décor Fresh flowers for the average wedding can range from $1,000-$2,000 easily, according to Bachman’s floral. You can save on fresh flowers by selecting flowers that are in season or buying wholesale and creating your own arrangements. “Pinterest has really taken wedding planning to the next level,” said Lafferty. “They are going more shabby chic.” Alternatives to flower centerpieces, according to Tano, are items such as candles, photos of the couple, and mirrors. Thinking outside the box can make the wedding not only less expensive, but give it a personal touch. Tano served a bride who loved reading and used books as part of her centerpieces.

So you want to plan a winter wedding? Say hello to your new best (or worst) friend – Mother Nature. Weather likely will dictate whether or not your wedding goes off without a hitch, so it is important to understand the risk. Be Prepared! There isn’t much you can do to overcome 2 feet of snow or a dangerous ice storm. Planning a great winter wedding will come down to the details that are actually in your control, such as wardrobe, transportation for guests and a winter-inspired theme. Also, you should be emotionally prepared for some guests who will not be willing to take on the risk of driving or flying through winter conditions to make your event. The elderly or friends with young children may be worried about potentially dangerous road conditions. As long as you can appreciate the needs of these guests – even on your special day – you will remain in positive wedding spirits.

Wedding Insurance With your wedding at the mercy of wintry conditions, you may consider wedding insurance to protect some of

26

your investment. Many policies will safeguard you from losing your deposit money to a weather-related cancellation. In this case, you could use the refunded money to hire a new vendor for a make-up date if any your original vendors can’t fit it into their schedules. And this is a real possibility, as many DJs, photographers, venues and videographers may already have their next few weekends booked.

Weather Trends Weather research may become your new favorite past time. You may find yourself checking five-year weather trends to find out the frequency of snowfall on your special date or reaching out to local TV weather professionals for the long-term forecast. While your efforts may make you feel in control, your time is better spent on planning all of the other aspects of your winter wedding.

Five years ago, Lindsey chose FamilyHealth Medical Clinic for convenience. When they moved from Lonsdale to Farmington, Lindsey was able to continue seeing her OB/GYN at FamilyHealth in Farmington and found it easy to bring the children to FamilyHealth Northfield to see pediatrician Ben Flannery, MD. “I always find the doctors to be knowledgeable and thorough,” she said. “They answer all of my questions and provide me with additional information when I need it.”

Lindsey delivered all three of her babies at First Touch Birth Center at Northfield Hospital. She had such a great experience and she found First Touch a calm welcoming environment where the nurses make patients feel respected, safe, and nurtured. And it doesn’t have an institutional feel. “Visitors often comment that it doesn’t feel like a hospital,” Lindsey said.

In December, Oliver, now barely three months old, had trouble breathing. She and her husband whisked Oliver to the Emergency Department in Northfield where he was quickly diagnosed with Respiratory Synctial Virus (RSV). The calm demeanor of the physicians and staff impressed Lindsey and kept her “worry level” to a minimum. “I was never frightened,” she said. “I was confident in the physicians and their abilities.” He responded to therapies over the two days of hospitalization and was discharged Christmas Eve. The best gift was a baby home and on the mend. Music is one of the most important parts of any wedding celebration. Finding the perfect musical act or DJ can be a frustrating exercise if you’re not prepared for the search.

B

efore deciding on your final choice for music, make sure to ask some basic questions — along with any others specific to your wedding — to make sure you find the one most aligned with your nuptial needs. Do you perform original music or play cover songs? This is a question for a band you are consider hiring. You want to make sure their musical preferences match what you’re looking for. Weddings are generally an atmosphere where cover bands may be a better fit, but this is up to you. What is your price range, and can I get a quote on paper? Making sure you have a written quote will help resolve any confusion come payment time. How many weddings have you performed for in the past couple of years? This answer may be one of the most important, as you want to make sure the company is experienced and up to the challenge.

Will you be providing the equipment and song list? Can you take requests? A “no” answer to any of these questions could lead to more work for you as you try to coordinate what will be played during your ceremony. Do you only play one event per day? You want to make sure you have the full attention of the musical act or DJ during your wedding. Are you easy to get in touch with if I have questions throughout the music planning process? A good musical act or DJ will surely answer “yes.” Ask for a list of references just to make sure you can conduct a little follow-up research. Do you also do announcements? It’s a great bonus to have your wedding band or DJ make announcements throughout the night. That’s one less thing for you to worry about.

A

wedding can be an expensive endeavor for couples. The cost for a reception venue will vary depending on where the party is held, so couples looking to conserve cash or simply set their party apart can consider some different options. Instead of booking with the first catering hall they find, couples should comparison shop to find a venue they find affordable and unique to their particular tastes. A reception venue may charge from less than $100 to several hundred dollars per guest. Couples who opt to do some of the work themselves by renting a space and bringing in their own food or using a private caterer may save a substantial amount of money. In addition, couples who don’t mind forgoing a more traditional setting may find more unique locations to hold their reception. Farmhouse: For that country appeal, a barn or farmhouse estate can make for the ideal place to hold a casual wedding reception. Farms are typically located on a large piece of land that can easily accommodate a number of guests. Gardens: Enjoy the peak foliage of whatever season you are enjoying at the botanical gardens nearest to you. Many gardens offer some sort of wedding package and may contract with an outside caterer to provide everything from sit-down meals to passed appetizers. Couples looking for one-stop-shopping can also combine the ceremony and reception at the gardens for a magical experience amid flowers, trees and more. Sports arena: Sports fans may dream of having their wedding on the field of their favorite professional team. Individuals can contact the stadium to find out if they do any private parties. If not, consider a stadium on a more local level, such as a college or high school field. The ambience will be the same, but the more local or smaller venue

may be more affordable. Lakeside: Where there is a beach, there is the opportunity to have a wedding at the lake. Beach weddings are usually casual affairs, and couples could have more leeway with regard to food and drinks. Clubhouse: For those who live in a condominium or a community managed by a homeowner’s association, there may be a clubhouse on the premises. Very often these clubhouses can be rented out for parties. Couples interested in an intimate affair can bring in their own food and have a low-cost reception close to home. Castle or estate: Dreaming of a fairy tale wedding? A historical building may make for the perfect backdrop. Certain historical societies may rent out estates and other buildings for weddings. At the very least, couples may be able to have their wedding on the grounds with the impressive home in the background. Boat: Dinner cruises frequently depart during peak sightseeing seasons from various locations on the coast. Couples may opt to have their reception aboard a paddle boat or larger cruise liner, and the cost may be on par with a stationary reception venue. Amusement park: If you want to get hitched at a favorite amusement park, speak with guest services to determine if they have any accommodations for weddings. Thrill seekers may want to tie the knot and then take a ride on a hair-raising roller coaster. Guests can dine on traditional foods and a mix of carnival treats. At home: Couples who really want to save money can opt to get married right at home. Pot luck food and donations of other treats from family members can keep costs down without compromising on the fun factor. Various reception venues can make for a memorable wedding. Couples can explore their options when a more traditional venue is not necessarily their style.

The phrase “rustic wedding” is buzzing in the wedding industry, as brides combine a modern and old-style mix into their special days. But what exactly does the term signify?

R

ustic means vintage and can span all aspects of your wedding – dress, tuxedo, venue, food, photography and more.

Dress and Décor

Photo from uptonbarn.com

When searching for a rustic-style dress, consider color, fit and how it will flow with the attire of the wedding party. A classic off-white dress with lace and other minor touches can be a home run if you’re going for that timeless, romantically rustic look. You can also weave the details of your wedding dress into your reception. Tie in the color of your gown with the tablecloths or include a strand of lace on the table markers. Going with a bouquet mix of subtly colored tulips? Display vases with tulips as centerpieces on some of your tables.

Venue Sometimes the quirkiest venues make for the best rustic weddings. The more nature, the better, since trees and rolling hills offer the perfect backdrop for a throwback event. Search your local area for unique outdoor venues that specialize in weddings. But be prepared to shell out a pretty

34

gf

| Girlfriends.mn

penny for these inclusive setups, which generally throw only about 10 to 15 weddings per year. Seating may also be an issue for some intimate outdoor venues, which can mean a no-go if you’re planning on inviting hundreds of guests.

Details A strategically designed suite of savethe-dates, invitations and place cards. Strings of glowing lanterns strewn from the border of your reception pavilion. Sepia-toned photographs of your wedding party that seemingly place your wedding back in the 1950s. All of these items have one thing in common – they scream rustic. Pulling these details into one event can help beautifully convey your vintage theme. When planning your wedding, consider every detail and ask yourself, “How can I make this rustic?”

Wedding Technology

A

simple search of the Google Play or Apple App Store reveals hundreds of mobile applications on the market designed to help you plan and execute the wedding of your dreams. The Internet makes it easy to research gowns, vendors and wedding locations, and smartphones make it that much easier. The use of smartphones to access wedding planning websites has nearly doubled from 2011 (33 percent) to 2014 (61 percent), according to 2014 research by TheKnot.com. Technology tools such as spreadsheets and finance trackers also help you control your budget and stay focused on the various tasks at hand. These digital gems are free in many cases, giving you a cost-effective way of organizing and maintaining important information.

Organizational Purposes

Photo from onewed.com

One of the best uses of technology to help organize your wedding is the spreadsheet. Fully customizable and editable as you go along, spreadsheets help you input and update information related to budgets, vendor quotes, invitation lists and much more. Consider building one master spreadsheet with multiple smaller files for optimal organization. If you are sharing planning responsibilities with a wedding planner or family member, consider using a cloudbased spreadsheet that allows all involved parties to upload, edit and analyze information.

In-Wedding Technology It is becoming more popular to integrate social media into the

flatbrokebride.wordpress.com

wedding mix. Couples can create their own Twitter hashtag and display a live Twitter feed throughout the reception on a projection screen hooked up to the Internet. Add a placard to each table with the name of the hashtag or Facebook group and encourage people to sign up. Guests love seeing their messages pop up on the screen and it’s a great way to make everyone feel like they are even more a part of your special day. You can create a wedding day memento out of the social media interactions later by printing out and framing a portion of the online exchanges

Memorable

F

riends of the bride have long put their heads together to pull off a memorable shower experience that all involved parties remember for years to come. Here are some of the most important things to remember when throwing a shower: • Decide on a date that is ideal for all attendees — usually a weekend day when getting off of work isn’t

an issue. • Choose your venue and make sure you book it months ahead of time. There’s nothing worse than having to go to your backup plan just because you didn’t plan ahead. • Plan (and stick to) your budget. Set a budget for the entire event and make sure you follow it during both the planning and execution phases. Your fellow bridesmaids will likely pitch in to help you avoid over-spending on this special event.

Shower ideas Below are some ideas for what kinds of spring bridal showers you can plan for your friend or family member. Don’t forget to incorporate the bride’s likes and dislikes into the festivities. For example, if the outdoors isn’t really her thing, a daylong event filled with lawn games probably isn’t your best bet. Be creative, be practical and most of all be fun.

Spa party A spa bridal shower is a great way to relax the bride during this anxious time. Consider booking your local spa or hiring a couple of professionals to come to you. A DIY spa station could include a massage table, a facial space and a mani-pedi seat. Be sure to play

relaxing music and deck your place out with soothing decorations.

Food party What bride doesn’t love food — especially healthy food to help her stay trim and fit for her special day? Set up a food-themed party to let your guests indulge on deli sandwiches, cheese and crackers, vegetables and fruit salads.

Perfume bar If your venue allows it, a perfume bar is a unique addition to your bridal shower. This is a great complement to a spa location. Ask the company’s management if they would permit you to put together a table area full of perfumes for sampling throughout the shower.

One of the finer details of the perfect wedding day look is in your nails.

Y

ou will be showing off your new wedding ring to all of your guests at the reception, so you want your nails to look their best. As you know, the options for how to prepare and design your nails are endless. Choosing the right color of polish is just the beginning.

Prepare your nails Since you know your nails will be near the center of attention when the focus is on your ring, start taking care of them months ahead of time. This means stop biting your nails and cuticles. It also means moisturize your hands often to get them ready to shine on your special day. You can’t expect a nail technician to be able to fix damage caused by improper care. This comes down your effort in maintaining healthy hands and nails today and beyond.

Know your preferences © FOTOLIA

You probably already have a favorite nail look from past formal events you have

attended, such as other weddings or your prom. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. This day is all about you, so the more familiar you keep these kinds of details, the more relaxed you will feel throughout the day. There’s nothing worse than experimenting with a new nail application only to find it makes your hands feel clunky and awkward when you want them to feel comfortable and natural.

Have a backup plan Nails break and paint chips. Will you be prepared if something like this happens on your wedding day? It’s a good idea to keep extra bottles of polish in multiple locations. If you will be sporting artificial nails, be sure to pack a repair kit comprised of extra nails, glue and other items that will enable you to make a quick fix in the case of a nail breaking. Consider having one in the room where you will be preparing, as well as one in your purse or the purse of your bridesmaid — that way you’ll be prepared to handle an emergency situation without stress.

Wedding bells can ring even into later life

“Is this a kissing book?” the grandson dryly asks when his grandpa, played by Peter Falk, in A Princess Bride begins to read him a story. Old people don’t do that, right? While discussing this on my radio show with Connie Goldman, she replied, “Well,” love, intimacy, sex, and building meaningful relationships are not the exclusive domain of the young.” Connie Goldman, award-winning radio producer and reporter, wrote a book about romance as we age called Late Life Love (2006: Fairview Press). Connie writes about life through collecting stories. I have known Connie for many years and have always admired her work in the field of aging and caregiving. When I read her book on love in later life, I knew it was an important topic to cover on my radio show. We have this stereotype of an older couple—a sweet, cute old couple that has been together for years. The older couples we see in public may just be newlyweds! Still, their adult children may be judging them for taking up “at their age.” Growing older doesn’t mean that our desire for love stops. While on my radio show, Connie suggested we redefine sex. Only two stories in Late Life Love talk about sexual intercourse or the trials of using Viagra, but every interview in the book talks about intimacy. We all crave someone to care about us, someone whose hand we can hold or with whom

we can cuddle up on the couch. When we’ve been with a partner for many, many years and suddenly they’re gone, it’s only natural to seek out someone new. Sharing your life, your heart and a physical closeness is called intimacy. It can include sexual desire or simply the joy of having someone to share a regular hug. Everyone is interested in getting a hug.

They Don’t Do That, Do They? Gail Rosenblom of the Star Tribune interviewed me shortly after the first edition of this book came out. Her article, Navigating the Gray Area of Sex (2007: Star Tribune), included such statistics as “Most 70-year-olds reported having sex at least two to three times a month, about the same as what national surveys have found for people ages 18 to 59.” Gail also interviewed me, including the story of my dad and dating. He met a lovely woman in his grief group. After the first few dates, my dad informed me that the relationship was just platonic, to which I responded, “Phewwwwww. So, I don’t have to have ‘the talk’ with you, Dad?” As clumsy as this topic may be to discuss, it will be on the table for many family caregivers in the years to come. Love and weddings have no age limit. WEDDING ISSUE 2016 |
