Located southeast of Northfield, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is made up of one of the last remnants of Big Woods vegetation along with rolling hills and valleys, traversed by Prairie Creek and its waterfalls. In 1854, the original woods contained about 5,000 acres. During the 1930s, major clearcutting was done on several hundred acres of the park. So in the late 1930s and 40s many people tried to protect the area and to preserve it as a state park. By 1945, the state had acquired much of the Big Woods remaining and a state park was established by the Legislature. ARTS

s Northfield continues to grow and prosper, city officials and l ocal residents are looking at ways to further the city’s reputation as an “arts town.” Since the day in the late 1800s when Ann North carted a piano across the frozen Cannon River, arts in all forms have blossomed in the city.

The celebration of music can be enjoyed by all during countless concerts, recitals and shows including the popular Rock & Roll Revival put on by musically talented high schoolers, the annual JuneBug Festival of Music, and performances by singing groups of all ages, as well as local and regional bands and orchestras. Not only home to many musicians, professional performers, artists and writers, the city also offers a plethora of cultural and artistic opportunities. Supported by the many events that take place year-round at St. Olaf and Carleton colleges, Northfield has become known as an arts destination. There are several art galleries open to the public and the local school system places a strong emphasis on its art and music programs.

Northfield is home to the Northfield Arts Guild. Since 1959, the Northfield Arts Guild has been serving artists in the community and visitors, as well, featuring theatrical performances. The City’s Arts and Culture Commission advises the city council on the development of the arts in Northfield and coordinates special projects. The commission’s sidewalk poetry initiative offers local poets the opportunity to have their work stamped into the city’s sidewalks. In addition to classes for youth and adults, St. Olaf and Carleton colleges also have art galleries open to the public. And as Northfield and Dundas continue to develop a reputation for the arts, the mission has been adopted by local businesses, the colleges and even the city government.

The Weitz Center for Creativity developed by Carleton College features uniquely flexible multipurpose spaces, supporting artists from our community to take advantage of the modern technology and innovation within its walls.

HISTORY

I

t was John W. North who gave Northfield its name. North, a New York attorney, travelled to the Minnesota Territory with his family in 1849 and founded Northfield in 1855. Area farmers grew wheat, which was ground into nationally acclaimed flour. Later, when the milling industry began to fade, the dairy industry gained in prominence, and the city became a commercial and cultural center for farmers. Later yet, St. Olaf and Carleton colleges were founded and the city became known as a center of education.

On Sept. 7, 1876, the James-Younger Gang’s failed bank raid on the First National Bank changed the course of local history. People around the world soon learned of the heroic effort of local townspeople to chase off the bank robbers, and the city gained an international reputation for foiling the

bank robbery which led to the demise of the James-Younger gang. The city now annually honors the bravery witnessed on that day during its Defeat of Jesse James Day celebration. However, despite being overshadowed by the bank raid, many other historical events have taken place in Northfield. In 1886, famed author Mark Twain visited the city and signed the guest book at the local YMCA. In 1897, Northfield resident Link Fey built one of Minnesota’s first successful automobiles. In the early 1900s, the local high school was one of the first to field a girls basketball team. And over its 150+ years, Northfield has been the home of noted literary, political and industrial giants. Many of the buildings in Northfield’s historic downtown have been imaginatively adapted for the business needs of today while still looking as they did over a century ago. The Northfield Historical Society, located downtown, provides exhibits, archives and a bundle of knowledge for those interested in learning more about the history of Northfield. N

orthfield is not your typical small town. With two of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges, the community boasts a highly educated and skilled workforce, a high level of community engagement, and a widely diversified commercial and industrial base. The town’s roots are in agriculture and milling – still reflected in MOM Brands’ two manufacturing plants – but its future is in new technologies. From flexible circuits to software to transportation and logistics, Northfield has a solid business base in a wide range of industries. Northfield is also a commercial and cultural hub for surrounding communities and townships. The market area stretches south to Faribault, east to cannon Falls, west to Lonsdale, and north to the southern Twin Cities suburbs, drawing a commercial base that includes nearly 39,000 consumers. To stimulate economic growth and development, Northfield has more than 500 acres of land for

Northfield is becoming home to a burgeoning senior population who are coming for the abundant cultural and artistic offerings, educational opportunities and convenient housing options. The city is home to senior housing that ranges from independent living designed with seniors in mind, to assisted-living facilities to full-care, long-term facilities. Many seniors feel they can still stay active in such a small, close-knit community, but also live in a space designed to fit their needs. Although the city of Northfield continues to become more urban, there still is a large amount of farming that takes place in the larger Rice County area. U.S. Census statistics say there were more than 1,290 farms in the county in 2002 and more than 248,000 acres of farmland. Medical services in Northfield are primarily provided by Northfield Hospital and Allina Medical Clinic, though several alternative services are available as well. NEIGHBORS

Dundas Fest

A

s Northfield grows, so do the neighboring communities, which each offer their own unique heritage, shopping centers and cultural experiences. When you’re in town be sure to visit our neighboring communities that offer a lot of small-town charm. Dundas

Dundas is showing residential and commercial growth at a quickening pace, but still retains the picturesque beauty of a historic river town. It offers those interested in history four sites on the National Historic Registry to explore: a church, a mill and two 19th century homes. Attractions for visitors and local residents include the town’s Class B Dundas Dukes baseball team, walking and snowmobiling trails. The city also sits on the Mill Towns State Trail. For more information about the city of Dundas call 507-645-2852 or visit www.cityofdundas.org. Dundas City Hall is located at 216 Railway St. in Dundas.

Lonsdale

Cannon Falls

Lonsdale

To see a good example of the growth in Rice County, look to our neighbor to the west: Lonsdale. The city is expected to double in size during the next 25 years. Located west of Interstate 35 on Minnesota Highway 19, Lonsdale was settled when the Milwaukee Railroad Company placed a station there. Farming has kept the community alive and thriving through the years and now more and more people are settling there. In recent years, city officials have focused on growing the local economy, building a strong industrial park and giving the downtown a new look.

34 34

|| Northfield, Northfield,Minnesota Minnesota2014 2014Guide Guide

Each year the community celebrates Community Days in August. The event features games, a craft sale, a street dance and much more. For more information, call City Hall at 507-744-2327 or visit the city’s website at www.lonsdale.govoffice.com.

Dennison

Another growing community in Rice County is Dennison. Dennison’s City Council is looking to bring industry and housing into the community. For more information, call Dennison City Hall at 507-645-7732.

Dennison

Randolph

Randolph is another railroad town founded at the turn of the century. The fire department’s annual chicken barbecue is the big celebration of the year and is held the third Saturday of August. For more information, call Randolph City Hall at 507-263-3797.

Cannon Falls

Cannon Falls to the east along Minnesota Highway 19 also offers visitors many activities. It’s known for its biking, hiking, skiing, canoeing and tubing. For more information call 507-263-2289 or visit www.cannonfalls. org. Cannon Falls is also home to the Cannon River Winery, which crafts a variety of award-winning white, red, blush, port and specialty wines.

HOUSING

T

he homes and neighborhoods of Northfield are a fascinating blend of the historic, traditional and contemporary; and new developments have remained sensitive to facilitating community connections.

Close to Northfield’s city center you will find tree-lined streets and predictable lots with classic homes including craftsman, Victorian, and colonial, to name a few. The growth in the latter half of the 20th century included custom-built ranch houses placed along curvilinear streets and cul-de-sacs. In more recent years, large distinctive homes were built, and the Northfield area has seen a number of townhome, twinhome and single home developments. Also, there are a variety of apartment options for those who prefer to rent. Living options for seniors include retirement condominiums, assisted living and apartments. For relocation information, contact the Chamber of Commerce, 507-645-5604 info@northfieldchamber.com www.northfieldchamber.com

nown as a community that supports education, Northfield is home to two prestigious liberal arts colleges and supports its public schools. Strong Public Schools The Northfield School District has a reputation for offering strong programs in academics, the arts and athletics from elementary grades through high school. The district offers half-day or all-day kindergarten programs, a pre-school and Early Childhood Family Education opportunities. The district has a state-of-the-art Northfield Middle School and the high school offers a strong college preparation curriculum, including Advanced Placement courses and a Senior Honors program in which seniors can take courses at either St. Olaf or Carleton colleges.

Educational Alternatives Also included within the district are two

Home to Two Colleges Any city would be excited to be the home of either St. Olaf College or Carleton College, but Northfield has the proud distinction of being home to both. Perenially ranked among the nation’s best liberal arts colleges, both institutions add culture, academic opportunity and diversity to the community.

St. Olaf College is a leader in the number and percentage of students who study abroad. Each year, hundreds of students travel to one of the college’s off-campus international or domestic programs. As many as nine college guides have ranked St. Olaf among the best liberal arts colleges. Still, the campus prides itself on being excellent, not elite. St. Olaf is a private college but a public place. For more information visit www.stolaf.edu. Founded in 1866, Carleton offers a top-rated education and a variety of cultural and recreational amenities to its students and faculty and to the community. It is annually ranked as one of U.S. News & World Report’s top-five liberal arts colleges in the nation. For more information visit www.carleton.edu.
