2015 Paradise Center for the Arts Season Guide
Welcome
Welcome to The Paradise Center for the Arts, located in beautiful Historic Downtown Faribault, Minnesota. As we enter our eighth year in our gorgeous facility and our fifth straight year of full season programming, I welcome you to the 2015 season filled with Tony Award Winning, Grammy Nominated, Emmy Award Winning work, coupled with some of the best visual and performing artists from across the Nation. There is truly something for everyone this season. It has been an amazing experience to serve as the Executive Director of The Paradise Center for the Arts for the past five years. This has been one of the most exciting and challenging opportunities I have had to face in my career. It has been a long uphill battle to get to this point in our organization. As we work to maintain this momentum and keep growing for the future the battle continues. Winston Churchill once said, “If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.” Too often patrons and community members see our Marquee lit up at night or can’t find a parking space downtown on a Friday or Saturday Night because we have a performance that evening, and they think, ‘wow that place is doing great.’ Well that’s not exactly the case. WHACK. Yes, over the past five years we have made great strides in moving our business forward to become a sustainable, viable business in the heart of our community. We have reduced our three quarters of a million dollars in debt by nearly 30% while continuing to balance a budget with over $400,000 in annual operating expenses. We have year after year increased our programming providing our community and region with outstanding high quality visual and performance art opportunities, and all at an affordable price. We have a burning desire to strengthen our community through the arts and education and provide a venue for established and emerging artists to exhibit and perform. With over half a million dollars in debt we are still saddled with overhead expenses that hold us back from bringing to life the possibilities our members, patrons and community hope for. We are focused on the success of this organization, its sustainability, and the impact it makes on the vitality of our Historic Downtown. I invite you to Support the Arts and Strengthen our Community. Join us in our journey to earn the support of 1000 members. Financially make a tax deductible contribution this year. Register for a class or educational camp. Attend a few of the performances and exhibitions offered this season. With your support hopefully we won’t have to take that fourth swing of the pile driver. Imagine the Possibilities.

Regulars at the Dakota Jazz Club, The New Standards are a rock and jazz trio known for their personalityladen brand of engaging performance and extraordinary musicality. Each member, coming from distinguished backgrounds in pop, rock, and jazz, brings something unique to the project: John Munson on string bass and vocals, a founding member of legendary and charttopping bands Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic, brings melodious rock-steady chops plus distinctive slacks; Chan Poling, the leader of the seminal Twin Cities 80’s (and resurgent!) haute punk band The Suburbs is the crooner and rock-shouter, but surprises with his pianistic firepower; bespectacled Steve Roehm, the band’s secret geek weapon, climbs breathtaking jazzy heights on his vibraphone, which is like a xylophone, except way harder to play–just ask Steve.
Want a great night out of comedy you can relate too? Then you need to check out the Baby Boomer Comedy Show! In this hilarious 90-minute theatrical event, fellow baby boomers and veteran comedians Jan McInnis and Kent Rader hit all the familiar topics you’re dealing with. . . family, kids, work, do-it-yourself projects, dieting, aging and all. . . and they do it with clean humor that’s been a hit across the nation. The laughter won’t stop as Kent and Jan hit a humor home run. From office relationships to dealing with your kids. You are guaranteed to laugh till your face hurts. This is rock solid comedy.

Singer/songwriter Alison Scott is the strongest new voice to come out of Minneapolis in many years and her soulful, organic sound has quietly built a very large and loyal following. While staying indier than indie and completely ignoring the hipster rulebook, through word of mouth with very little radio or media hype, Alison Scott is making the kind of soul music that music fans love. True music lovers have always responded to an amazing voice singing great songs, and they always will- from Aretha to Adele, this is timeless music that transcends style and fashion, something for the silent majority of listeners who aren’t interested in fluffy pop or the trendy flavor of the month. Performing with platinum and Grammywinning guitarist/producer Kevin Bowe, drummer Peter Anderson and bassist Steve Price, Alison has been selling out venues across the Midwest.

A composer and author set out to write the next great musical having no idea of where to start. From the earliest inceptions of musical theater to the most familiar and obscure, this entertaining ‘review’ of musical theater will have you laughing, reminiscing and learning how the art form came to what it is today.
by Peter Shaffer Directed by Daniel Yoder Amadeus is a play by Peter Shaffer, which gives a highly fictionalized account of the lives of the composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. In the play, significant use is made of the music of Mozart, Salieri and other composers of the period. The premieres of Mozart’s operas The Abduction from the Seraglio, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute are each the setting for key scenes of the play. Amadeus won the 1981 Tony Award for Best Play. It was adapted by Shaffer for the 1984 Academy Award winning film of the same name. HeeJune Shin

Book by Arthur Kopit Music & Lyrics by Maury Yeston Directed by Eric Parrish The vibrant and provocative musical “Nine” will close Merlin’s 20th season. The production features Steve Lawler as the musical’s focal point, Guido Contini, an Italian film director. More than a dozen beautiful women in Contini’s life swarm around the once-lauded director as he attempts to revive his career and arouse inspiration by escaping Rome. The original Broadway show won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1982. Its revival won two additional Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical, in 2003. The musical has wonderful music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, with a book by Arthur Kopit. Director Eric Parrish and choreographer Mary Hahn (choreographer of Northfield Arts Guild’s “Chicago”) will surely inspire you to “Be Italian!”

An American tourist, a caterer by trade, and his wife and daughter rush into the embassy two steps ahead of the police who suspect them of spying and picture taking. It’s not much of a refuge, for the ambassador is absent and his son, now in charge, has been expelled from a dozen countries and the continent of Africa. As the game proceeds, they bet among themselves on every conceivable event, go out for frosty malts or beers, try to pick up the bathing beauty and, occasionally, watch the game. 2015 Paradise Center for the Arts Season Guide
www.paradisecenterforthearts.org / Ticket Office
Paradise Center for the Arts The Paradise Theater was built upon the foundation of the Grand Opera House in 1929, after the original opera house was destroyed by fire. Designed by the architectural firm Liebenberg and Kaplan, the Paradise was originally conceptualized as the Granada with a Moorish or Spanish theme. The Paradise is an example of an “atmospheric” theatre, a Hollywood-inspired genre of architecture. Unlike conventional theatres, atmospherics are rich in fantasy decor, designed to divert the audience away from everyday cares and set the stage for the show to come on stage and screen. The architectural design and decorative scheme in an atmospheric theatre were planned to evoke the illusion that patrons were seated outdoors. To create the mood, “atmospheric” theatres were modeled after certain romantic themes. Some, like the Paradise took their inspiration from Spanish Mediterranean villages; others borrowed from ancient Egypt. The image created for the Paradise was one of a walled Moorish courtyard. Once seated inside of the auditorium of the theatre, the full effect of the courtyard “atmosphere” is achieved. The sides of the theatre, faced with plaster scored to look like masonry, were painted to resemble stone.
507.332.7372
H
HISTORY The theater was designed with a traditional proscenium arch separating the shallow vaudeville stage from the seating area. It also included a small orchestra pit intended for use by the musicians who accompanied the movies of that time. Originally designed to seat 915 people, the theater was eventually divided in half in the 1970s so that two movies could be screened simultaneously. The theater closed in the early 1990’s, under pressure from more modern, multiplex theaters that had sprung up in the region. In 2004 we purchased the old Paradise movie theatre and after a 2.1 Million Dollar Renovation, we opened our doors to the general public in October of 2007. We look forward to the opportunity to share with you what Paradise Center for the Arts now has to offer. Please visit our facility and enjoy our many artistic and educational offerings.
