Welcome

A

s Paradise Center for the Arts launches into our 10th Anniversary Year, I am honored to embark on this journey with Faribault and our surrounding communities. This year is packed full of amazing arts opportunities, including a special anniversary series and gala-style event. As the Paradise celebrates this important milestone, I want to thank the families, individuals, local businesses, and the local artists for your generous support. Your gift of art goes far beyond the awardwinning physical beauty of the Paradise. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to observe children who were exploring the art of Pablo Picasso. The first graders were studying his “blue period.” One child had painted a blue moving truck (his family was relocating). That child understood Picasso (as well as any of us can), but more importantly that child understood that art helps us to express and explore our world. One of Picasso’s famous quotes,“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up” sums up children’s innate ability to see beauty and sadness and to not be afraid to claim them. For the past 10 years, the Paradise Center for Arts has been a place for young people to be artists and a place for adults to remain artists. It is a place for the community to gather for music, for the visual arts, for theater. A place to claim our sadness, our beauty, our joys, our fears, our ability to be a community. Picasso also said,“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” We want to continue to be that place. That place where you come to deflect some of your own dust through a class, our galleries, as an actor taking center stage, as an audience member transported to another time or place, or through the power of live music. The Paradise Center for the Arts is the place for you. Our marquee is a landmark for downtown. Art is a landmark for our lives. Help us keep the creative soul and spirit of Faribault alive this year and for decades to come by celebrating with us!

The electrifying adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film starring Gene Wilder, will leave you in stitches. It parodies the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its 1939 sequel, Son of Frankenstein. Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds. Fun, fright and musical comedy take center stage.
