July is Parks and Recreation month. This July, America celebrates 32 years of Parks and Recreation month, and the enduring, worldwide importance of Parks and Recreation. From the start, parks were created to serve the people and to give them a place to appreciate nature, exercise, socialize and have FUN. This mission lives on and continues to intensify. Let’s celebrate the past, present and future of Parks and Recreation. Each year, our department provides families with unique and fun opportunities for all ages. This year marks our 7th Annual Owatonna’s Weekend Out. The weekend kicks off Friday night with a camp out at Brown Park, including a showing of The Great Outdoors. So mark your calendar for July 14-16, and look for details about other Weekend Out activities coming soon! We are in our sixth season of Movies in the Park at Central Park. Get your blankets and lawn chairs ready for a night under the stars…June 16, July 14 and August 11. We have an exciting lineup, starting with Trolls in June, then The Great Outdoors, and finishing up with the People’s Choice Movie – vote on Facebook! Every summer opportunities abound at our local parks! Our department is espe-
cially proud of the high quality parks and trails we have in our community. Whether you are looking to bring a child to the playground, play some tennis, pitch some horseshoes, have a picnic, take a walk or just relax, we have the park for you. SeniorPlace is growing! We’re working hard to offer programming for ! W E seniors and Boomers! New trips include a winery trip and a tour of the N Union Depot and state Capitol. Silver Streaks softball is back and gearing up for another season. And talk about Bang for your Buck…along with your SeniorPlace membership (only $37.58 per person!), you’re part of a business partnership program with many local businesses participating! Just show your card and in most cases, receive a discount, and in just a few uses and the membership pays for itself. What’s summer without a few rounds of golf? Whether you’re an occasional hacker or an avid golfer, you’re sure to enjoy Brooktree. The 18-hole course provides plenty of challenging holes, scenic views and a great 19th hole at Masters Bar and Grill! Come and see what’s new and improved at Brooktree! More Brooktree information and many new golf specials are listed later in this brochure. It’s a great destination to play, relax and enjoy. Parks and Recreation are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the quality of life in a community; ensuring the health of family, youth, and contributing to the economic and environmental well-being. Research has clearly shown that Parks and Recreation helps reduce obesity, depression and crime, all while building stewardship, cultural diversity, economic development, and academic success. No community prides themselves on their “quality of life” without such communities having a robust, active system of parks and recreation programs for their pubic use and enjoyment. Don’t miss any of our summer activities…stay connected…like our Facebook pages (Owatonna Parks & Recreation, Owatonna SeniorPlace, River Springs Water Park, Owatonna Dog Park, and Brooktree Golf Course), and bookmark our website – www.ci.owatonna.mn.us/parksrecreation We look forward to seeing you out and about in YOUR Parks this summer, as the “Benefits are Endless” in your “Best Investment,” The Owatonna Parks and Recreation Department!
