The Significance of Taps at Military Funerals
I
f you are associated with the military in any way you probably are aware of why Taps is played at military funerals. For those that are not aware, the story is a powerful one that goes back in history for over a century. So where did that haunting song that when heard in such a solemn setting puts lumps in our throats and tears in our eyes? It was 1862, during the Civil War when the Union Army Captain Robert Elli was with his men at Harrison’s Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the opposite side of a narrow piece of land. During the night, Captain Elli heard the moans of a severely wounded Soldier. Not knowing if the man was a Union or Confederate Soldier, Captain Elli risked his life to save the dying Soldier. Captain Elli crawled on his stomach through gunfire to pull the stricken man back to his encampment for medical attention. When the Captain finally reached his encampment lines, he realized the man was a Confederate Soldier and had died. When he shone his lantern on the Soldier’s face, he become numb
with shock. Captain Elli was staring down at the face of his own son in a Confederate uniform. His son had been studying music when the war broke out and decided to enlist in the Confederate Army unbeknownst to his father. The following morning Captain Elli asked his superiors if his son could receive a full military burial although he was an enemy Soldier. He requested a group of the Army band play the funeral dirge for his son. Captain Elli’s request was turned down because his son was the enemy; but out of respect for the heartbroken father, one musician was permitted. The Captain chose a bugler and requested the notes that were found on a piece of paper in his son’s uniform be played. Hence, the birth of what we know today as Taps and why only one bugler performs. So as you stand erect with hand over heart or saluting, remember it was a young man that died that gave us those haunting sounds that puts lumps in our throats and tears in our eyes. It is unfortunate he had to die in order to remind us of the
cost of our Freedoms we have today. If you can read this, thank the person that taught you how to read; but if you are Free to choose to read this, thank a Veteran. These are words to the lyrics: Day is Done. Gone the sun. From the lakes, From the hills, From the sky. All is well. Safely rest. God is nigh.
