here are many undiscovered marvels of Faribault that both travelers and townies alike will find in this historically significant community. Many, if not most of Faribault’s residents, simply have not taken the time to tour the Mill, taste a tap at F-Town, or appreciate “The Experience” of the arch on Shattuck-St. Mary’s campus. So here’s a healthy challenge for anyone looking to enjoy a morning, afternoon, or evening in Faribault while engaging the kids, crazy uncle, or even the dog. Take a hike! That is, tour Faribault on foot and take in the many sights and sounds of Faribault that you’ve been too busy to witness! Here’s a suggested itinerary: Start your excursion with breakfast (or lunch) at one of the great diners or bakeries in downtown Faribault. After proper sustenance, wander out onto Central Avenue and take in the beautiful historic facades adorning the entire downtown district. From Central head east on 2nd or 3rd Streets and as you cross Highway 60, consider that over a century ago, the river was more or less under your feet before the railroad decided to straighten the Straight River. Following 3rd St NE to Ravine or the footbridge at 2nd Street NE across the river, consider the two important lifelines, the railroad and the Straight

River, and ponder the impact they had on Native American life, fur-traders, early European settlers, grain millers and the development of Faribault as a regional center. As you cross, look north and note the Depot and the Faribault Dairy Company (i.e. the cheese caves) as historic markers of early commerce. Imagine the Fleckenstein brothers digging those caves to store their brew. Start your assent up Ravine and if you have time (and leg strength) consider taking the stairway to the historic campuses of St. Mary’s, the State Academy of the Deaf and the rest of the Shattuck-St. Mary’s campus. If you are short on time, take 2nd Street NE through the old river neighbor-

hood and on up to 6th Avenue NE and head south through the residential neighborhood. At Highway 60 head west to the Viaduct taking in the panoramic view of downtown and 150+ years of economic development. Head west over the historic bridge representing one of the last major 1930’s era WPA projects in Minnesota and the Great Depression. Back across the river and on the edge of downtown, head west on Division noting the small triangular green space on the southwest corner of Willow and Division called Peace Park. Take in the architectural beauty of Buckham Memorial Library on your left and, looking right down Central Avenue, consider the sheer number of historic buildings representing one of the largest historic districts in the State. Staying on Division, make your way up the hill, crossing under the bridge and taking the stairs up to 2nd Ave SW. You have now entered Faribault’s Original Old Town (aka the IC neighborhood). See the variety of architectural styles, many built in the late 19th Century, and materials used, including locally quarried stone. Head south to the row of 5 Victorian homes perched on the river bluff. Cut west on 1st St SW through the Bethlehem Academy campus and wander the shaded, residential block turning north on 3rd Ave SW. Remember, most of the older, majestic homes were initially built by Faribault’s early “Captains of Industry” or early settlers. Continue north to 2nd St NW and past the Historic Hutchinson House B&B, which was named one of the “50 coolest houses in Minnesota.” Turn east on 2nd St NW and walk to First English Lutheran Church. Turn north onto 2nd Ave NW into the governmental section of the city. The Fire House and City Hall is to your right, and on the next block the art deco Rice County Courthouse to the west and the Rice County Jail looms to your right as you approach Highway 60. Cross Highway 60 at the stop light, still on 2nd Ave NW. Central Park is just ahead, across from the Cathedral of Our Merciful Savior, the first Episcopal Cathedral constructed in the USA over 150 years ago. At 6th St NW, head east past the Guild House on your way back to Central Ave and turn south. As you meander south on Central back to your starting point, note the iconic refurbished Tilt-A-Whirl car on display in front of the State Bank of Faribault, offering one-of-a-kind photo ops. By now you are surely ready for refreshment so stop at one of the many taverns and eateries along Central Ave completing your tour. Depending on how far you stray and your pace, this entire tour is roughly 3 miles and can be completed in just over an hour. So take the time and get to know the historic gem we call Faribault. Cook as a Family itchens have traditionally been gathering places for families to spend time with each other. There is a reason for this, and maybe our present culture would benefit from more traditional approaches to fun.
Staycations can include family cooking fun that has many benefits. Not only is cooking together as a family a fun experience, it also can be a great way to save some money on you staycation. Instead of shelling out premium bucks for a high-end steak dinner, grill your own with all the fixings. Save money on that restaurant-produced lobster bake and visit your local grocer for fresh seafood selections that you can cook at home. Support local business while you fill your belly — a win-win!
HEALTHIER EATING According to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health research, people who frequently cook meals at home eat healthier and consume fewer calories. That is good news for staycationers on a diet! You also can make more informed decisions about eating because when you prepare food at home, you can pick out the ingredients and follow safe cooking procedures. According to the government web site, Lets Move!, parents play a key role in not only making healthy choices for children but teaching children to make healthy choices for themselves. It doesn’t have to be a battle though if you make it fun and include them in the preparations. Take these tips into consideration if you’re planning out your staycation itinerary and meal plans.
FAMILY TIME The most important benefit is the

family time and the fun you can have cooking together. Small children can be involved by setting the table or doing other small tasks. Since you have more time on a staycation, try family-style dining. According to the Department of Children and Families, family-style dining has many benefits because it allows children to practice social
skills, such as sharing, taking turns and saying “please” and “thank you.”
LOCAL FOOD TRIPS Take a family trip to the local farmer’s market or co-op that sells fresh produce grown by area farmers. Not only are they full of healthy eating options, but it would be fun to pick out new combinations of vegetables
or fruits to create new dishes on your staycation. Baked delicacies and canned goods, such as jams and pickles, also are available in some markets, while some even have fresh flowers and local crafts. Staycations can bring families closer together. You can make memories that last a lifetime in your own hometown.

or many in communities across the world, the thought of any type of vacation may be nothing short of a dream. Too expensive; too much of a hassle to arrange; not enough time. A staycation, on the other hand, is an option that is a bit more feasible. Defined as a vacation spent near home, the popularity has been growing for years, a 2016 report from WalletHub, a financial-focused company that frequently conducts analysis on a wide range of topics, shows. Last year, the report said, two-thirds of Americans planned to stay local for any vacationing. Among some of the metrics used as part of the report, recreation was on top. Thankfully for those in the Faribault area, the city boasts an impressive and communityfocused recreation department that continues to update its offerings from

year to year. Those opportunities provide to many the chance for a low-cost, easyto-reserve “Staycation” of sorts. Whether it’s daytime camps for youth, or taking part in some of the free events, such as “Family Flicks” or the longrunning Concerts in the Park, there are a number of chances for Faribault residents to enjoy what the department has to offer.
As the summer favorite, the city also provides those in the region with a top-notch aquatic center, located in north Alexander Park. Family, individual and low-income residential passes are
available, as are 10-, 20- and 30-pack ticket bundles and season passes, all of which give many the chance to cool off, while making memories for years to come. For the youth sport and recreation camps, thanks to the Tommy Allen Scholarship Fund which pays 50 percent of the fee for kids of eligible families who want to participate, the offerings are available to essentially everyone – no matter their financial situation. In 2015, the scholarship was used 74 times, more than half of which went to swimming lessons. In 2016, the fund helped 144 families cover more than $2,500 in fees, with swimming lessons and “Fun Center” being the top programs. The scholarship funds can be used for four programs a year, per child. The fund was created in 1987 in honor of the late Thomas Allen who died at age 9 and is the sole beneficiary of Spike Fest, which started in 2011 and attracts both organized and recreational volleyball teams from across the region in January. Beyond the event, which has raised $20-30,000 since it was created, the fund relies solely on in-kind donations. With the growing participation, more donations are always welcome.
Wednesday, June 21, 2017
For the younger groups, this year’s offerings include “The Investigators,” “Castle Camp,” “Science Camp,” or the “Fun Center” day camps. For a more sport-focused track, there are golf lessons, tennis, volleyball, baseball or track and field opportunities, among many others that can be found in the Buckham Bulletin. The Parks and Recreation Department also has on hand nearly 400 acres of park land, much of which is accessible by miles and miles of bike trails. Sometimes, a simple get away is as easy as enjoying a picnic, a fresh waft of brats and burgers passing in the air, or taking a ride down the many scenic trails. In Faribault, the thought of a “Staycation” is not out of reach; rather, the opportunities are endless. A quick glance through the city’s offerings in the Bulletin will put the plans in motion. Don’t stress about planning a vacation this year – take advantage of what Faribault has to offer for a close-tohome “Staycation.” Brad Phenow | Enrichment & Communications City of Faribault | 15 W.
