OUR COMMUNITY,

OUR SCHOOLS

Welcome to the Owatonna Public Schools! We have eight great schools, over 900 incredible staff, and just over 5,000 outstanding students and numerous community education programs for residents of all ages. We hope you’ll find this information about our school district interesting – and our doors are always open for visitors. I have always believed that strong schools build strong communities. As stewards of our education system, we openly accept the challenge of creating a better future for our community. Our schools truly belong to our residents, so take advantage of our school performances, athletic events, volunteer opportunities and everything else that takes place in our schools. We are so incredibly fortunate that our community supports our education system. Your ongoing support helps to keep Owatonna a vibrant community. Thanks to voter approval in 2015, we are now celebrating the opening of Owatonna Middle School and McKinley Elementary. Both buildings have undergone major renovations to improve the learning spaces for our 21st century learners. We are also in the process of improving Lincoln Elementary, Washington Elementary and Wilson Elementary to improve the learning environments and add valuable learning space. And our newly named “Owatonna Education Center” is home to Early Childhood Special Education and our Area Learning Center. Please enjoy this community-sponsored production that tells the story of the Owatonna Public Schools and our continued mission of Learning Excellence, Life Readiness, and High Expectations for All: A Family, Staff, and Community Commitment. Go Huskies! Jeffrey S. Elstad Superintendent Owatonna Public Schools jelstad@owatonna.k12.mn.us 507-444-8601

OWATONNA AREA LEARNING CENTER

(FORMERLY WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY) 338 EAST MAIN STREET • 507-444-8000 AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO LEARN IN A DIFFERENT SCHOOL SETTING Owatonna Area Learning Center is a school of choice for students who are looking for an alternative setting for obtaining their high school diploma. We are proud to offer a smaller setting in which we work to understand and address individual student needs. Our philosophy is similar to Albert Einstein’s quote, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Our mission is to capitalize on student strengths in their endeavor to obtain a world-class education. We meet student needs through classroom courses, hybrid courses, online courses, independent study courses and our arrangement with the community colleges. Students have the opportunity to work at an accelerated rate and earn more credits than otherwise. What’s special about Owatonna Area

Learning Center? Ours is a school of choice. Students come here because it is a good fit for them. Students appreciate the smaller class sizes, the flexible learning styles and the ability to obtain credits at a faster rate. Our students benefit from: • Small setting with a lower student-toteacher ratio • Flexible learning approaches • Ability to earn more credits, at an accelerated pace, towards graduation • Dual credit program with Riverland Community College and South Central College • Leadership through our MAAP Stars Leadership Program • A full-time counselor and full-time social worker who help address the needs of the whole child • Check-and-connect time which provides social support as well as academic interventions for all students

JOIN US!

We have many opportunities for community members to volunteer in our school. We believe in creating a bridge between our students and the opportunities and talents that our community has to offer.

We believe in, “This child. Right now.” We ask ourselves, “What does this student need, right now, to succeed?” – Jim Kiefer, ALC Principal

A PROGRAM THAT IS HIGHLY ENGAGING IN A NEW SPACE THAT ENCOMPASSES THE CHANGES IN TODAY’S EDUCATION Welcome to the new Owatonna Middle School! Since the beginning of 2016, staff have worked hard to create great educational programming for the new Owatonna Middle School. The focus: creating a true middle school experience, which addresses all aspects of a child’s development –academic, social and emotional – while giving students an opportunity to explore a variety of classes to help them find areas of interest. All students are part of a team of core teachers (science, English, social studies, and math). In addition, students in 6th and 7th grade will experience exploratory classes such as Computer Coding, Computer Applications, Intro to World Languages, and Project Lead the Way engineering classes. Middle school is when students start experiencing more options! What’s special about Owatonna Middle School? • 60,000 square feet of new space that includes expanded cafeteria, new stage, new music room, sixth grade classrooms, fitness center and a newly-designed media center.

• All core teachers in each grade level will have common planning time, allowing teachers to collaborate with curriculum and focus on shared students and their experience. • Addition of exploratory classes and electives including French, German, Photography, Conditioning, Flight and Space, Robotics, Chemistry, Musical Theater and more. • Newly renovated media center that includes spaces for large group activities as well as small group spaces. • Expanded student support system including two school counselors, a mental health practitioner and a mental health therapist • Student advisory program called Husky Connections that meets daily with a group of mixed 6th-8th grade students with a focus on building relationships. Students will remain with their teacher advisor for all three years of their middle school experience. • New required courses including 6th grade Health and 8th grade College and Career Readiness. • New schedule operating on a four-period day with alternating A/B-day courses.

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM OWATONNA MIDDLE SCHOOL:

We are very grateful to the Owatonna community for supporting the 2015 bond referendum that allowed us to expand the building, add 6th grade and create a true grades 6-8 middle school. The planning committee for the new program kept one thing at the center of its research and development: the student experience. Our new program in our new space is engaging and exciting!

Owatonna Middle School is designed to transition students from elementary school to high school. With a focus on the student experience, Owatonna Middle Schoolers will experience a team structure with exposure to a variety of courses designed to allow students explore areas of interest. – Julie Sullivan, OMS Principal
