Huskies team to beat in Big Nine In 2013, the Owatonna boys golf team captured its first Big Nine Conference championship in over a decade. And the Huskies bring back just about everyone in 2014. The pace-setter will be junior Peter Jones who is coming off a banner sophomore season. He finished second at the Section 1AAA tournament — nearly defending his 2012 title — and followed that up with a secondplace showing at the Class AAA state tournament, where he shot a 2-over par 74. Jones will have plenty of help,

too. Senior Ted Urch, routinely in Jones’ shadow, played a big hand in Owatonna’s one-loss run through the Big Nine a season ago. Fellow seniors Ben Konold and Jeffrey Johnson and sophomore Gage Schuster also all helped account for the Huskies’ consistent top scores. The only one missing from last year’s leaderboard is graduate Kyle Dickerman. So, it’s no secret that, in conference play, the target on Owatonna’s back is not golf-ball sized, more like beach ball.

COACHSPEAK

Taking aim will be top-tier clubs like Rochester Century, last year’s Big Nine runners up by a point, and Albert Lea, which finished fourth. As for the section, defending champs Lakeville North will be once again the team to knock off, as well as Century and Hastings. Despite outplaying Century in league play, the Huskies fell behind in the Panthers at the section tournament, finishing fourth to the Century’s second. Owatonna is eyeing to change that this season – and it certainly has the firepower to do so.

Peter Jones OHS junior

NEED TO KNOW

Peter Jones — As a sophomore, Jones, a four-time all-conference honoree, finished as the runner up in both the section and state tournaments. Needless to say, Jones turned a lot of heads, including the University of Minnesota’s. The junior is a verbal commit to the Gophers. Ted Urch — Urch, a senior, was consistently near the top of the leaderboard with Jones last season. He shot a 74 at the Big Nine Conference meet to help the Huskies sew up their first league title in over 10 years.

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TRACK

Seniors to steer Huskies this spring The Owatonna boys track and field team has no shortage of head-turning athletes. Andrew Stelter, coming off a seventh-place finish in the state shot put, is one of the top throwers in the state, Nick Rethemeier, the reigning Big Nine 800-meter champ, leaves many-a distance runner in his rear-view and Logan Langeland, a section runner-up in the long jump, can leap further

than most. Not to mention, threefourths of a state-qualifying relay (4x100) — Brian Kidd, Brenden Buryska and Aaron Peterson — is back in the fold. Those seniors helped the Huskies capture the True Team Section title, beating Lakeville North and Lakeville South for the fourth consecutive year, and finish runner up in the Section 1AA meet last year. Also playing a role were

COACHSPEAK

key contributors like Will Zimmerman (state hurdler) and Jonah Remker (state sprinter), Cam Peterson (distance) and Caleb Buck (shot put, discus), who have since graduated. With a strong senior core in place and a huge crop of underclassmen, OHS, coached by Kevin Stelter for the 14th season, is primed to be the team to beat in the Big Nine this season.

LAST SEASON

Owatonna finished third in the Big Nine Conference and was the Section 1AA runner up.

NEED TO KNOW

Andrew Stelter – The 6-foot-4, 247-pounder finished seventh at the Class AA state meet in the shot put a junior. One would be hard-pressed to find a bigger, stronger thrower in the state this year. Nick Rethemeier – When it comes to distance running, Rethemeier will arguably be — literally and figuratively — Owatonna’s frontrunner. He’s coming off a Big Nine Conference title in the 800-meter run last season.

Huskies needing to learn on the fly

The upcoming season for the Owatonna boys tennis team will no doubt be one of transition. No one would blame Huskies coach Curt Matejcek for taking it easy when it comes to scheduling as several young athletes get accustomed to their new roles on the team. Well, so much for that. Aside from enduring its annual grueling Big Nine Confer-

ence schedule, Matejcek added perennial power Edina to the slate. The Huskies will also take on tough nonconference foes such as Waseca, Cretin-Derham Hall, Lakeville South and Hastings. The Huskies will have to learn on the fly with several newcomers at key spots on the singles and doubles ladder. Gone from last season are singles players Sean Grubish, Kurtis Pierret and Evan

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL BOYS L ACROSSE

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS L ACROSSE

Expectations high for stacked OHS Deep Huskies seeking postseason run There is one direction the Owatonna lacrosse team has been moving since becoming an officially sanctioned sport by the MSHSL six years ago: Forward. This season should be no different. “I am looking forward to this season as it looks to be one of the better teams Owatonna lacrosse has had,” OHS coach Scott Seykora said. The 11th-year coach has every reason to be optimistic entering 2014. Aside from the steady participation numbers and a sizeable freshman class, the Huskies bring back five of their top six scorers from last season, headlined by Attackers Pete Hanson and Jordan

Klein. Hanson led Owatonna with 35 goals in 2013 to go with 15 assists. Klein was close behind with 30 goals and 10 assists. Combined, they accounted for 59.5 percent of the Huskies’ offense last season. But the talented pair is far from the only horse in the stable for Seykora. Midfielder Michael Schmitz notched 26 goals and eight assists last year and was named second-team all-section while being selected to play in the 2014 Captains Cup. Joining Schmitz at Midfielder is varsity veteran Parker Gillard. In 2013, he pitched in 13 goals and eight assists. On defense, Owatonna isn’t

short of talent either, returning a trio of players in Parker Hoen, Hayden Holland and Ethen Pfieffer that logged significant frontline minutes last season. Hoen and Holland were named second-team all-section while the latter was selected to play in the Captains Cup. In front of the net Scott Swenson comes back after stopping 57.4 percent of shots in 2013. The Huskies are still without a conference and play in Section 1 against teams such as Rochester Mayo, Century, Farmington and Lakeville North. In 2013, the Spartans advanced to state and finished 1-2 at the tournament.

April 24. That day is circled extra thick on the Owatonna girls lacrosse team’s calendar. It’s when the Huskies face off with Rochester Century, the team that put an abrupt end to their 2013 season. After ending the regular season on a four-game winning streak, Owatonna, touting a 20-5 record over Big Nine schools in the past five years, was outdone by Century, 15-11, in the first round of the section playoffs a year ago. This season, Owatonna just might field the team to get over that hurdle and make a playoff run. The Huskies may have lost their all-time leading scorer, Ashley Kniefel (123 goals), but they return loads of experience and COACHSPEAK LAST SEASON depth. Finished 5-8 overall. NRHEG HIGH SCHOOL BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

Panthers looking to lead league pack The NRHEG girls track team has been the Gopher Conference runners up the past three years. The Panthers are hoping to change that this spring. Buoyed by its strong flock of underclassmen and led by a standout senior, NRHEG has a good shot at reclaiming its first league title since 2010. Senior Carlie Wagner can jump and sprint with the best in the state — she won the Class A high jump in 2012 and was a statequalifier last year before bowing

out with an injury — and her twin sisters, Maddie and Wagner, are following in Carlie’s footsteps. Last year as eighth graders, Marnie and Maddie were all-conference in the 4x200-meter relay along with then-freshmen Hailey Schuller and Taylar Tieskotter. Standing in the Panthers way will be the league favorite, United South Central/Alden-Conger. In the section, NRHEG will have highly touted Waseca to contend with. On the boys side, NRHEG has

been stuck in the middle of the conference and sub-section packs for the past five years. Low numbers this season won’t help them change that. But, the Panthers should rake in a lot of points in the distance events, anchored by senior TJ Schiltz, who placed in the state’s 1600 and 3200 meter runs last season. Just like the girls, the Panthers will have stiff conference and section competition highlighted by USC/A-C and Waseca.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE HS BASEBALL

BLOOMING PRAIRIE HS SOFTBALL

Blossoms return bulk of state-title squad Blooming primed to ride pitching

It wouldn’t be fair to say the Blooming Prairie softball team “only” lost three players from last season’s Class A state championship team. Those three players weren’t your ordinary seniors. They were each named to various all-state teams and played three of the most vital positions on the diamond. Shelbi Swenson was the record-setting pitcher. Sam Ivers was hard-nosed catcher and Jenna Krell was the slick-fielding shortstop. They also made up the heart of the Awesome Blossoms’ offensive line-up. Needless to say, the trio won’t be easy to replace, but the program is on stable ground with Ali Mach at the helm. After taking

over 10 years ago, she has compiled a 181-65 record with four straight trips to the state tournament in Mankato. Even without Swenson, Ivers and Krell, the Blossoms will be a primary threat to win the Gophers Conference once again in 2014. Leading the list of returning players is Senior Sydney Heiber. Last season, the steady third baseman batted over .300 and earned all-conference and all-section honors. Across the diamond from Heiber will be reigning all-conference performer Madison Worke, who also batted above .300 in 2013. Delaney Nelson is the only other athlete to return from the starting infield from a season ago.

COACHSPEAK

Swenson’s vacated spot in the circle will be filled by Elly Strunk while Tessa Ivers will move from centerfield to take her sister’s position behind the plate. With the infield solidified and strong options at pitcher and catcher, Brian Baldwin is expected to anchor the outfield after batting over .400 last season as an allconference right fielder. Mariah Holland should slide back in to her spot in left with center field remains up for grabs. Other players that Mach thinks will have an impact are Abby Wayne, Jessica Ferguson, Anika Nowlan, Alyssa Krohnberg, Abby Wayne, Kalyn Naatz, and Gina Gimbel.

LAST SEASON

I think one of our biggest strengths will be our experience playing in big games.” — Alison Mach

Finished 23-3, winning the Gopher Conference (10-0) and the Class A state title.

NEED TO KNOW

Sydney Heiber (3B) — She’s a senior and returns as the only member of the squad that earned all-state tournament team. After being surrounded by heavy-hitters in the line-up last season, Heiber will undoubtedly be asked to generate more offense on her own. Elly Strunk (P) — She’s a freshman, replacing the best pitcher in program history and plays the most vital position on the field. Enough said.

ROSTER

Seniors: Liz Willert, Mariah Holland, Megan O’Connor, Delaney Nelson, Ashley Krohnberg, Sydney Heiber. Juniors: Madison Worke, Tessa Ivers, Jessica Ferguson. Sophomores: Anika Nowlan, Abby Wayne, Alyssa Krohnberg, Kalyn Naatz. Freshmen: Elly Strunk, Bria Baldwin, Gina Gimbel, Jasmine Anderson.

SCHEDULE

April 10 vs. Maple River, 4:30 p.m. April 11 vs. Southland, 4:30 p.m. April 12 at Maple River, 11 a.m. April 15 vs. Byron, 4:30 p.m. April 17 at USC, 4:30 p.m. April 24 at NRHEG, 5 p.m. April 25 at Austin tournament, 4 p.m. April 26 at Austin tournament, 10 a.m. April 28 vs. Faribault BA, 4:30 p.m. April 29 at Randolph, 4:30 p.m. May 1 at Maple River, 4:30 p.m. May 5 vs. Medford, 4:30 p.m. May 8 vs. USC, 4:30 p.m. May 10 hosts BP Invite, 1 p.m. May 13 at WEM, 4:30 p.m. May 15 vs. NRHEG, 4:30 p.m.

With less than 20 players in the system grades 9-12, the Blooming Prairie baseball program doesn’t have the sheer numbers to support a deep bench or large JV roster. But what they lack in quantity, long-time coach Paul Peterson hopes to make up for in quality. “We are looking to improve and are excited about our overall experience coming back despite only having only 18 players,” Peterson said. “One of our strengths will be our work ethic.” Spearheading the stable of returning letter winners is the school’s star athlete, John Rumpza. Though the nearly 6-foot-7 junior will play basketball or football at the next level, he still takes baseball seriously and has been on the varsity team since eighth grade. Peterson doesn’t have specific positions laid out for most of his players but states that eight athletes return with significant varsity experience, including Rumpza. Peterson does know, however, that Ryan Doerhoefer, Weston Fiebiger and Sam Swenson will join Rumpza in the pitching ro-

Weston Fiebiger BP senior

tation. Those three, along with Hunter Rudlong, Zach Reynolds, Matt Worke and Tyler Ferguson will create a solid foundation of his day-to-day line-up and starting defensive unit. Newcomers Nick Poe and Ethan Strunk will also help out. Last season, the Blossoms won five total games, all of which came in a six-game span. In the streak,

their most notable victory came against a strong Faribault Academies team. After dropping its final three games of the regular season, B-P bowed out to Goodhue 4-0 in the opening round of the playoffs. Peterson expects Southland and Kenyon-Wanamingo will be the teams to be in the sub-section this year.

LAST SEASON

COACHSPEAK

We hope to work hard and complete in each game of the season. One game at a time. The wins will come.” — Paul Peterson

Went 5-8-1 overall, 5-6 in the Gopher Conference.

NEED TO KNOW

John Rumpza (P) — He’s been pitching since eighth grade and is the team’s unquestioned ace. Ryan Doerhoefer (P) — He’s a senior and will likely be the second option on the mound behind Rumpza.

ROSTER Seniors: Ryan Doerhoefer, Hunter Rudlong, Weston Fiebiger, Zach Reynolds, Matt Worke, and Tyler Ferguson. Juniors: Scott Romeo, Sam Swenson, John Rumpza. Sophomores: Riley Olson.

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Huskies bring back host of talent

The Owatonna baseball team doesn’t have Colton Schock. The Huskies don’t have Jordan Howe, Jake Bushwell or Ryan Melcher either. But that’s OK. They have Carter McCauley. The reigning all-area player of the year and first-team all-conference performer is a one-of-a-kind high school athlete with as much skill on the baseball diamond as he does power in his leg or instincts in front of the goal. McCauley can do it all. He possesses the strength to clear the

bases with one swing of his bat, speed turn singles into doubles and patience at the plate to drive pitchers crazy. Last season, he batted .400 with a gaudy .547 onbase percentage to go along with 23 stolen bases. And that’s not all. He also won a pair of games on the mound with an ERA south of 3.00. Joining second baseman McCauley on the infield will be Dexter Leer (.400 BA in 2013) at shortstop at Luke Wanous at third.

COACHSPEAK

Behind the plate, the steady bat of Owen Carlson will be a welcomed return. Last season, the senior batted .406 with 11 RBIs, With the infield largely intact, Riley Thompson leads the list of players who will fill the outfield spots. As a junior in 2013, Thompson batted a solid .300 with 13 RBIs before blowing up in the summer. Attending camps and showcases throughout Minnesota, Thompson earned a spot in the Under Armor Camp in Florida.

LAST SEASON

We take pride in our work ethic and preparation for our season - we strive to improve every day and we take that approach throughout the season.” — Tate Cummins

Finished 13-10 overall, 9-8 in the Big Nine Conference.

NEED TO KNOW

Carter McCauley (2B/P) — McCauley is an established offensive and base-running threat and will not be asked to log more innings than ever on the mound. He finished 2-2 in 2013 with a 2.81 ERA. Riley Thompson (OF) — This Division II signee at Minnesota-Crookston will look to build off a busy and a break-out summer in which is traveled to Florida and put himself on the regional recruiting radar with strong showings at showcase events.

Schultz ready to rejuvenate Panthers As a sophomore, Jade Schultz was the NRHEG softball team’s biggest bat and ace pitcher. As a junior, she could only be the Panthers’ biggest supporter. Now, in her senior campaign, Schultz is read to reclaim her roles. The senior pitcher will be making her return to the diamond for NRHEG after sitting out all of her junior season with a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus she suffered during the 2013 Class AA state basketball semifinals. The team’s MVP and Golden Bat two years ago, Schultz, a varsity pitcher since the seventh

grade, returns to the Panthers with gaudy 2012 numbers, including a .450 average at the dish and a 1.79 ERA from the circle. As a sophomore she struck out 195 batters and held the opposition to a mere 0.175 on-base-percentage. Moving back behind the plate will be NRHEG’s only other senior, catcher Hannah Lundberg, who was an all-conference pitcher last year in Schultz’s absence. She hit .375 and scored team-best 17 runs last season. Joining the senior battery will be juniors Anna Stork (1B, .432) and Kelli Harrington (CF, .378), who each received all-conference

nods in 2013. Also returning to the starting lineup are juniors Ryann Hagen (OF) and Alyssa Esplan (SS) and freshman Kayley Camerer (OF). Key members lost from last year’s squad are third baseman Tara Simon, an all-conference and all-conference pick, and outfielder Makenna Thiele. NRHEG, helmed by coach Wendy Schultz for the 17th year, competes in a stacked Gopher Conference, helmed by Blooming Prairie, the reigning Class A champ, and Randolph. Maple River is Section 2AA favorite, according to coach Schultz.

Tigers trying to turn the corner After a promising start to the 2013 campaign that included two wins in its first three games, the Medford softball team lost its remaining 13 contests, including a 7-6 extra-inning defeat to Glenville-Emmons in the opening round of the Section 1-A tournament.

In fairness to the Tigers, last season was the definition of a re-building year as the program got back on its feet after taking 2012 off due to low participation numbers. Though 2014 is still expected to be somewhat of a transition year, the Tigers should also take

COACHSPEAK

MEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Medford a more focused ballclub

Despite losing some valuable pieces from last season’s team that won three games, positivity surrounds the Medford baseball program. For the first time ever, most of the Tiger players didn’t stop playing when the high school season ended as the program fielded a legion club in the summer of 2013. This, combined with a constant and positive message offered by coach Jon Chappuis, has hope springing on the high school diamond. “There is much optimism in the baseball program in Medford,” Chappuis said. “After the first day of practice, I have never seen a focus like I saw in this team. We invited our track coaches in to teach us some form running drills so that we can be faster. We, as coaches, are looking to make our kids in every facet of our game.” There is the positivity, and then there is the reality. The Tigers lost their best pitcher from last season to gradu-

COACHSPEAK

ation in Kade Cronin. In 2013, he pitched 32.5 innings and struck out 47 batters. Cronin also anchored the line-up as the squad’s cleanup batter for the last couple of years. Also gone are catcher Jacob Voupel, a .333 hitter, and fouryear starter Derek Butterfield. But baseball enrollment is up at Medford and Chappuis thinks a mixture of returning veterans and spry newcomers will be more than enough to keep the program moving forward. Leading the list of returning players is the coach’s son, AJ Chappuis. This two-sport athlete and reigning all-conference performer on the diamond, batted an even .400 in 2013 with a healthy .520 on-base percentage. He also drove in 10 runs and stole five bases. Chappuis — who served as the Tigers’ quarterback in the fall — is expected to slide right into the middle of the line-up while anchoring the defense at shortstop.

Our strengths will be in our leadership and experience. We return many players that are hungry to be successful. We have a great group of player returning that are focused and excited to play baseball.” — Jon Chappuis

Tyler Keller, who coach Chappuis says leads the team with his “drive to succeed,” will join AJ near the top of the line-up and up the middle of the defense at second base. The team’s “natural leader” according to Chappuis is Aaron Snyder. He will return to the outfield where he started almost every game last year. Other than that, a combination of Isaac Holm, Dalton Wiersma, Wes Ohnstad, Hunter Neuhaus, Nick VonRuden and Nick Meixner will help fill the remaining spots on the field as returning letter-winners. Varsity newcomers Angel Lopez, Wyatt Volkmann, Chris Janousek and Blake McCarty will add depth and balance to the roster. On the mound, Chappuis will log most of the innings along with Ohnstad, Neuhaus and Keller.

MEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

Tigers seek top-3 Gopher finishes The Medford boys are looking to remain in the top-tier of the Gopher Conference. Coming off a third-place finish last year, the Tigers are reloading with a seniorheavy team. Two athletes sure to produce are Luke VanZuilen and Trevor Grems, who were members of the 4x200-meter relay that won a conference title last year. United South Central, the

reigning league champs, is arguably the conference favorite while Byron is the section frontrunner. On the girls side, Medford is hoping to slip into the conference’s top-three after finishing fourth in the Gopher a year ago. Just as the boys, the girls have a sizeable senior group led by Ellyn Luebbe (jumps) and Sam Larson (sprints). Junior Cassidy Kavitz

BPHS girls tout promising youth, boys return experienced runners

What the Blooming Prairie girls track team lacks in experience, they make up for in promising youth. In fact, a bulk of the Blossoms’ team is made up of freshmen who were on the team in 2013. Not just on the team, produced points. “I have a large freshmen class this year that started to come on strong at the end of the season as eighth graders, so I am looking forward to seeing what they contribute this year,” coach Kari Bottin said. The Blossoms’ strongest area will be mid-distance, paced by Alanna Grant and Lauren Larkoski. The duo also helped the 4x800 relay qualify for sections a year ago. Bottin is also relying on Taylor Hagen to helm the throwing

events, discus and shot put, which the graduated Marissa Jensen, a section-qualifier, anchored last season. In the Gopher Conference race, BPHS will be trying to catch up with NRHEG and USC, the league favorites. Notably, Maple River is a newcomer to the conference while Loyola dropped out. For the boys, there’s a lot of positivity surrounding the team — and for good reason. The Awesome Blossoms return several experienced runners as well some strong field athletes. Leading the way is multi-sport star and team captain Cole Sunde. The junior hopes to build off a strong 2013 season in the triple jump and sprints. Fellow co-

captain Isaac Baker compliments Sunde well as a capable distance runner. “These two were elected captains by their peers for good reason,” Blooming Prairie coach Ryan Slack said. “Besides being strong athletes they are excellent, reliable leaders with great attitudes.” Two other section participants from a season ago return in Collin Wobschall (junior, shot put) and Alec Ille (eighth grade, mile/ distance). Slack is also excited about several young newcomers including Wyatt Grundmeier, Kristian Hamersma (horizontal jumps), Quentin Kubista (pole vault).

Churchill thrust into skipper role

This season’s version of the NRHEG baseball team is going to have very little in common with the 2013 version. Not even the steadiest influence in the program for the last three decades is going to be around as longtime coach Jeff Reese has decided to take the year off for unknown reasons. Taking his place is Pat Churchill, who took the position in early March. Needless to say, he’ll be scrambling to piece together a line-up before the season opens. When he finally begins to put things together, you can bet Dillon Parpart

COACHSPEAK

will be right in the middle of it all. Last season, the utility player was named all-conference honorable mention. Other than that, no other athlete returns with any postseason accolades. Gone is last year’s best hitter in Brad Claycomb, who hit .410. Last season’s ace, Nic Mangskau, also graduated, leaving behind 40 valuable innings on the mound. But there is nothing Churchill can do about what he doesn’t have. Sitting in his lap is a mixture of returning players and newcomers with various levels of experience and skill.

…we struck out 30 percent of our at bats last year and need to improve on that. We need to put the ball in play more.” — Pat Churchill

Zach Haberman returns and will likely begin the season as the starting first baseman across the diamond from Carson Field or Matt Jensen at third. Noah Krell will anchor the ever-important spot behind the plate. Parpart will also log innings at catcher. Up the middle Dakota Thiele and Trevor Tracy come back after earning letters last season at second and shortstop, respectively. On the mound, a combination of Parpart, Tracy, Jensen, Field and Dempsey Tucker will make up the rotation.

LAST SEASON

Finished 5-10 overall, 4-6 in the Gopher Conference.

NEED TO KNOW

Dillon Parpart (OF/P/C) — He’s the only player returning with who earned all-conference accolades and can both pitch and catch. Trevor Tracy (P/SS) — Considering his position fields more plays and requires more arm strength than any other at the high school level, Tracy’s ability up the middle of the defense will be paramount.

Huskies seeking to peek at the right time

After a top-three finish in the Big Nine Conference, and the fourth seed in the section tournament, the Owatonna softball had grand hopes in last year’s postseason. But, just like that, the Huskies were swiftly knocked out after two playoff games. This year’s team will be looking to make up for that, and try to fill the shoes left by All-Big Nine standouts Shanna Thom and Ra-

chel Malo. Helmed by first-year coach Brian Pilcher, Owatonna fields an experienced ball club led by seniors like outfielder Jessica Cole and talented underclassmen like sophomore infielder Rachel Williamson. The two return with allconference honorable mention nods under their belts. Senior first baseman Peyton Mensink and sophomore out-

fielder Kayla Johnson also return to the starting lineup. Pitching wise, the Huskies will hand the ball its ace, senior Riana Kubat. Eighth grader Tiana Blazek returns to the circle, as well. Pilcher said he thinks Mankato West, Mankato East and Rochester John Marshall will be the teams to beat in the conference.

NEED TO KNOW

TRITON HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Triton ready for a turnaround With games being condensed into a tight time frame and competing in a tough conference against teams with considerable enrollment advantages, 2013 season wasn’t a banner year for the Triton baseball team. After dropping their first four contests and suffering another losing streak of five games in the middle of the year, the Cobras finished the regular season strong but drew a tough matchup against eventual state champion KassonMantorville in the opening round of the Section 1AA playoffs. After losing 5-2 to the Komets, Triton ended the year 5-13 overall.

But the Cobras aren’t far removed from a run of successful seasons, which includes a trip to the state tournament and 20 wins in 2007. Leading the list of returning veterans are reigning all-conference honorable mention performers Alex Hoberg and Evan McNeilus. Last season Hoberg batted .293 with four doubles and nine RBIs as the team’s starting first baseman. McNeilus — who will pitch and play third — finished with a strong .333 average with a healthy .401 on-base percentage. He also cracked four doubles and drove in nine runs.

Alex Hoberg (1B) — Hoberg batted nearly .300 last season surrounded by several all-conference performers who have since graduated. The pressure will undoubtedly be on Hoberg to increase his already strong numbers. Evan McNeilus (P/OF/3B) — Sporting eerily similar numbers as Hoberg, McNeilus will be held in the same high regard as his teammate in 2014.

COACHSPEAK

Young Cobras in rebuilding mode Triton track and field coach Bruce Huber has been around long enough to know when he thinks his team has enough depth and experience to contend for true team titles. He also knows when his squad is re-building, and 2014 might just be one of those years. “We are extremely young,” Huberr said. “We have several individuals that will be competi-

tive, but as a team, we are a couple years off.” Huber isn’t lying, the Cobras have just two seniors listed on the boys roster and only one (Braedon Dostal) of which returns with any sort of experience. The girls have none. The only male athlete to register all-conference-level times in 2013 is junior Hector Bugarin, who clocked a 42.5 in the 300
