Expect TriCity United football to vie for conference title Tri-City United football COACHES Head Coach: Ken Helland, third year at TCU, 34 years overall with a 161-157 record Assistant Coaches: Pete Plut, Phil Campbell, Cory Immerman, Andrew Meier and Adam Hanson Volunteers: Dave Krenik, Brad O’Keefe and Matt Collins 2013 Record: 6–1 in the conference, 7–2 overall The Titans, in 2013, tied for the Minnesota River Conference Championship with win over Belle Plaine in the last game of regular season, (tied with Belle Plane and Watertown-Mayer with 6-1 conference records). It lost in Section 1AAA quarterfinal game to Cannon Falls 26–29. KEY PLAYERS Offense Look for returning starters tight end Charley Simonette, named All-Conference in 2013, who had 22 receptions for 315 yards and three TDs last season as well as wide receiver Jamison Beulke and guard Jon Reak. Beulke had nine receptions for

106 yards and one touchdown in 2014. Defense Simonette, a senior, should be tough on both sides of the ball. Last year he notched 36 tackles and had eight quarterback sacks. Linebacker Gabino Rodriguiz and tackle Alex Burns, also a 2013 All-Conference player, had 56 tackles each last year; Dan Popp had a dozen tackles last season. MOVED ON Five All-Conference players graduated in June, including quarterback John Christian, who led the team with 700 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Also gone are Joe Rynda, Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year; Pat Lloyd, who rushed for 500 yards, had 197 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in conference play; Josh Selly, who led the team in tackles and Aaron Dwyer, who had six touchdowns. KEEP YOUR EYE ON Offense Two junior quarterbacks are sure to thrill Titan fans: Trevor Smisek and Keegan Oak. Don’t

miss wide receiver junior Carter Rynda. Defense A pair of seniors, safety Beulke and center Max Arroyo, and junior end Jordan Bartholomew will look to keep opposing offenses on their heels. OVERALL OUTLOOK Expect the Titans to be very competitive in the Minnesota River Conference and in Section 1AAA. If they stay healthy, keep turnovers and penalties down, they have a chance to have a pretty solid team. As usual, TCU will play hard and its offensive and defensive lines should be a particularly strong. TCU has to cut done the number of turnovers and penalties to be successful and im-

prove its pass rush on defense. It’s inexperienced at many positions with only three returning starters on offense and four on defense. No Titan running back who had more than 100 yards rushing in 2013 will be back for the 2014 campaign. “It should be a very balanced and very competitive conference,” said Helland. “Any of the top four or five teams could win the conference.” Watertown-Mayer, Belle Plaine, and TCU (all 6-1 in conference in 2013) should be in contention for the 2014 Conference Title. Sibley East and Mayer Lutheran should also be in the hunt.

The girls team has six of the top seven girls from 2013 returning, including eighth-grader

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Last year the boys team was one of the best teams in southern Minnesota, winning three meets and placing in the top 20 percent of all finishers in every meet. The team placed second in the Minnesota River Conference and fourth in Section 2A. This year’s team will be a new bunch of kids, said Fogal. “I believe we have a lot of talent and we should be able to do pretty well again this year,” he said. The favorite this year in the conference will be last year’s winner, Jordan. TCU and Belle Plaine should again stay close to the top. Last year it finished fifth in the eight-team conference and 12th in the 21 team section. “We will be improved this year and should be able hang with the top two teams in the conference, Belle Plaine and Norwood,” said Fogal. “In the section, Waseca and Martin County West are re-

ally good again.” COMMENTS FROM THE COACH “We have by far the biggest cross country team I have coached,” said Fogal. “With 45 athletes we should be right with Jordan and Belle Plaine for the largest teams in the conference. I’m really excited to see so many new kids coming out for the first time. Not only will they help our cross country team but all these kids are multi-sport athletes that

will help them a great deal come winter and spring season.” BY THE NUMBERS 45 — The number of athletes out for cross country in 2014 31 — The number of athletes on the 2013 team 19 — The number of girls out this year, 10 are in their first year 26 — The number of boys out this year, 12 are in their first season Submitted by Brian Fogal

“This season will be a fun season for our team. We graduated quite a few from last year’s team, but we have a group of young runners who are willing to work hard. With our two seniors (Guentzel and Nate Johnson), we have strong leaders for our younger guys to look up to. “The girls graduated two long-

time members of this team. Justine and Elizabeth have been great contributors to our program for the past six years and they will be missed. The current team should be able to take what they’ve learned from them and have a successful season. “We are looking forward to our boys gaining valuable varsity expe-

rience this season. Our girls team is looking to be competitive in the conference again.” – Dale Compton, head coach

Meyer, Courtney Roach, Natalie Weelborg) 2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Last year’s St. Peter overall record was 7-10, lost in section quarterfinals, 1-4 in SCC at 5th place. Rothenberger picks these as the section favorites: Blue Earth Area, United South Central and Sibley East. St. Peter hopes to be close to those mentioned teams this year. COMMENTS FROM THE COACH “We have all four starting singles players back with Rachel, Val, Katie, and Aliza Doherty. Our doubles will have many different players that our young changed in and out of the starting lineup. We may have to shuffle some of the singles players into the doubles lineup against certain teams.

“Our success will all depend on how well we play at the 3 and 4 singles and 3rd doubles position. If the team can get consistent wins at those three spots, then we have pretty good odds of defeating most of our section and conference opponents.” — Aaron Rothenberger, head coach BY THE NUMBERS 31 — 7-12th grade participants (most since 2007) 5 — Seniors 4 — Returning varsity singles players 3 — Section 2A wins to go to state tournament 2 — Returning SCC All-Conference players 1 — Team working in unison to improve from last year.

5 wins and 6 losses 23 swimmers and divers qualified for the Section Meet Placed 6th out of 12 teams at the Section 1-A Swimming and Diving Meet with 182 points Placed 27th out of 43 teams at the State Swimming and Diving Meet with two Relays and the individual performance of Casey Rezmerski placing 5th in the 50 Free and 13th in the 100 Free “The coaches and athletes are really excited for the 2014 swimming and diving season,” Lager said. “We have so much to look forward to with 17 girls who qualified for the section meet last season returning and many of them are faster coming into this year. We also have a large group (18) of first-year swimmers and divers who bring a lot of excitement and energy to the team.” “One of our main goals this season is to have a full section roster, meaning we would have four swimmers deep in all the individual events and fill the three relays. We want to get back to the state meet with at least two relays and some individuals in their stroke events. There are some big holes in our lineup with the graduation of last year’s

senior class. We are hoping to fill in those gaps as the season progresses.” COMMENTS FROM THE COACH “The girls on the SPHS swimming and diving team are strong, hard working, and very competitive. The team’s success this year will depend on how healthy the girls can stay during the long training season. Injuries and illness can really affect the outcome of our goals so we have to be careful. “Our dual meet schedule is always tough. This year at the Section 1-A Swimming and Diving Meet we will face several of the best teams in the 2013 Class “A” State Tournament. These are five teams from our Section that placed in the top 10 at State: Visitation-1st, Mankato West 2nd, Albert Lea 5th, Faribault 6th, and Northfield 9th. — Mary Lager.
