OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL NEED TO KNOW Ty Sullivan — The reigning People Press area Player of the Year and First-Team All-Conference member returns for his senior season after breaking out in a big way in 2012. As a junior, Sullivan posted 15 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists-per-game. He’s a dynamic playmaker with a quick first step and strong jump shot. There is no doubt he’s going to be asked to carry an even larger offensive load this season with the graduation of a few key role players from last year. He’s got an outside shot at 1,000 career points. Sam Fenske — Fenske, like Sullivan, will jump right from his spot at receiver on the gridiron and into the backcourt for the Huskies on the hardwood. After missing several games due to injury last year, this floor-burning point guard still made all-conference honorable mention after averaging better than 11 points, two steals and two assists-per-game. If he can stay healthy, and there’s no reason to believe he can’t, Fenske could become one of the league’s top play-making guards.
OUTLOOK Owatonna will no doubt have one of the most experienced and talented backcourts in the league entering 2013-14. Aside from Sullivan and Fenske, the Huskies return Dexter Leer, who logged extended minutes as a sophomore following a rash of injuries to several Husky regulars. During his time as the starting point guard, Leer did a nice job of running the offense, settling in as a strong pass-first floor general. Owatonna brings back a host of strong role players too led by Luke Wanous and Andrew Stelter. Wanous, an undersized, gritty forward at 6-foor-2, played extended minutes in 2012-13. Stelter was a menace on the boards last year and will provide some much-needed muscle on the blocks. The tallest player on the roster is Zach Shaver, who stands a lanky 6-6. Expect Owatonna, which finished fifth in the Big Nine at 11-7 last year, to contend for a top-3 spot in the league. John Marshall, which beat OHS on a buzzer-beater in last season’s section semifinals, is favored to win the conference, while Austin, last year’s
Big Nine champ, and Mankato West are projected to be on the Rockets’ heels. Lakeville North is the heavy section favorite, led by Xavier-bound JP Macura, the top-rated shooting guard in the state.
ROSTER Seniors Andrew Peterson, Andrew Stelter, Garrett Olson, Ian Langeberg, Logan Langeland, Luke Wanous, Sam Fenske, Ty Sullivan, Zach Shaver Juniors Ahmed Mohamud, Cam Jensen, Cole Butler, Daniel Boubin, Daniel Nolte, Dexter Leer, Isaac Rocha, Jacob Zabel, Joey Smith, Lyne Frank, Matt Kingland, Mo Farkhudin Sophomores Alex Emmanuelson, Jacob Borchert

OUTLOOK
Coming off a rough season in which the Cobras finished 4-22 and won only two games in the rugged There’s nowhere to go but up for the Cobras, who stumbled to a 2-22 overall record and were winless in the Hiawatha Valley Conference at 0-12 last season. Boding well for Triton – although a rather young HVL conference, change is in the air for the Triton basketball program. Peggy Moran, who graduated from team – is its varsity experience, led by senior Bradley Myers (5.2 PPG, 3 RPG) and junior Alex Finne (7.5 Stewartville High School before playing four years of basketball and volleyball at Bemidji State University, will take over as head coach and have plenty of returning players to choose from when filling out her PPG, 5.2 RPG). rotation. MEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL
Medford senior Connor Chapple
NEED TO KNOW Connor Chapple — After being the third option on last season’s team behind Kade Cronin and Alex Spinler, Chapple is primed and ready to take over the primary scoring duties this season. The shooting guard averaged more than 12 points per game last season, but he’s going to need to improve his shooting from the field (39 percent) if he wants to take the next step and become a true team leader. Luke Peterson — Coming off the bench last season, Peterson will slide into the starting line-up in 2013-14 alongside Chapple and create a strong Medford backcourt. As a sophomore last season, Peterson averaged 11.1 points per game, but collected just six assists all season. Though he’s going to be asked to score quite a bit, Peterson, and Chapple for that matter, will need to distribute the wealth in order to keep their teammates engaged in the action.
OUTLOOK Medford won 11 games overall in 2012-13 and finished a very respectable 6-8 in Gopher Conference play. However, with an obvious lack of height and the absence of Kade Cronin (9 ppg, 2.6 apg, 6.8 rpg, 1.1 spg) and Alex Spinler (16.4 ppg), the Tigers are going to need to scratch and claw in order to duplicate that in 201314. Peterson and Chapple offer a strong backcourt combination, but the pair averaged less than two assists per game combined last season and combined for 98 turnovers. Peterson was the team’s designated sharp-shooter (37 percent from 3-pointers) and will no doubt look for a breakout season. Other players that will help the
squad are Ryan Kortz (2.6 ppg in Dec. 16 vs. G-E, 7:15 p.m. 2012-13) and Luke VanZuilen. OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS NEED TO KNOW Kalley Schwab – The senior returns as the Huskies’ top scorer in the all-around. “She’s strong everywhere. She can go mid-nines on just about every event,” OHS coach Tom Smith said. Schwab, who qualified for state in the floor exercise as a sophomore, will be looking to get back in her final campaign. Kelly Neubauer – Neubauer mirrors Schwab as an elite all-around performer who will provide consistent production for the young Huskies. According to Coach Smith, the senior is capable of scoring in the 37-38 range.

With only two seniors, Schwab and Neubauer, and one junior, Tatelyn Blazek, the Huskies will have to lean on their underclassmen core to add to the scoring. The Huskies, who finished third in both the Big Nine Conference and Section 1AA tournament last season, will have especially stiff competition this year. None stiffer than Austin, the defending league champs and third-place finishers at state, which bring back its entire team. Mankato East and Mankato West should also be in the mix for the Big Nine title.

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL Owatonna senior Kyndal Cox
NEED TO KNOW
Katlin Ptacek – She can bring the ball up, hit from outside or score down low. Ptacek, a senior captain, is the definition of an all-around player on the hardwood. Not only that, the versatile forward brings back a team-leading 13.8 PPG to go with 4.8 RPG and 2.8 steals a contest. “She can kind of just do it all,” OHS coach Tricia Hoffman said. Kyndal Cox – The senior forward will be a constant double-double threat for the Huskies. Whether she’s crashing the boards or filling the cup, Cox, a prototypical slasher, will be a tone-setter for Owatonna. “She can get a defensive rebound and go coast to coast with the ball,” Hoffman said. Cox, also a captain, brings back a team-best 6.8 RPG along with 8.8 PPG.

Owatonna will be contending for the conference along with defending league champ Mankato East, John Marshall, which is loaded with efficient post players and may be the favorite to take the Big Nine, and Mayo. Come playoff time, Owatonna should be in the conversation as a top-3 seed.

NRHEG HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL OUTLOOK
ROSTER
Few teams in the state for boys or girls of any class come into the season with higher expectations than the Panthers. Boasting four returning starters and two key bench players from 2012-13, they have a legitimate shot of running the table and winning every game this season. Non-conference tests against larger schools like Minneapolis Washburn, Waseca, Albert Lea and Mankato East will help keep John Schultz’s bunch sharp and competitive. The Gopher Conference slate should offer little resistance as the Panthers won all 14 league games last year while going 13-0 against sectional opponents. The only loss they suffered in their 32-1 campaign came at the hands of Class AAAA Chaska.

Carlie Wagner — Hands down the state’s best player as any level will look to add to her already staggering numbers. As a junior, she not only poured in 34 points-per-game, but she also collected 4.5 steals, 6.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists. She is the unquestioned centerpiece of an already talented roster and no doubt helps make NRHEG the preseason favorites to repeat as Class AA champions. Wagner controls the tempo and flow of the game when she has the ball in her hands and often fights through three defenders to score at will. She has improved her jump shot over the last couple of seasons and if she can hit 40 percent of her 3-pointers, she has an outside shot of averaging 40 points a contest if she wants. Jade Schultz — The perfect complement to Wagner, Schultz averaged 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds per game last season while dishing out four assists. This versatile guard/forward made the allconference team last year and has a chance to step into elite status, if she hasn’t already.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL NEED TO KNOW
John Rumpza – The 6-foot-6 junior led the Awesome Blossoms in scoring and rebounds last season, averaging 21.5 points and 12.5 boards per game. Rumpza, a two-time all-conference honoree, also set a school record for single-season rebounds with 347 and netted his 1,000th point. Truth be told, Rumpza, a stretch forward who can score off the block or step out and can the 3, may just well be the most versatile player in the area. Weston Fiebiger – Whomever the Awesome Blossoms are looking to contain, chances are Fiebiger is checking him. The 6-foot senior served as the Blossoms defensive stopper last season and he will reprise the role again this winter. With a lack of scoring returning, Fiebiger, bringing back four points a night, will need to complement his stingy D with an increase in offensive production.

OUTLOOK The biggest key to success for the Blossoms will be filling the shoes of the Michael Thomas, a fill-it-up scorer who averaged 18.2 a game last year and finished as No. 3 on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,160 points. But, lucky for Blooming Prairie, it brings back its leading-scorer in Rumpza and a host of returnees who helped the Blossoms compile an 18-10 record and a spot in the section finals a year ago, where they lost to Rushford-Peterson. The Blossoms, who finished third in the conference last year, should be in the thick of the Gopher Conference race, right alongside the defending league champ WEM and runner-up United South Central. In the postseason, standing in Blooming Prairie’s path to state will once again be the favorite, R-Peterson, which returns its top seven players from last year’s third-place Class A team.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL NEED TO KNOW Taylor Hagen — This Northern Iowa University commit nearly averaged a double-double last season, posting 14.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Getting used to double and sometimes triple teams over the last couple of seasons, Hagen could put up some downright scary numbers if she continues to improve on the block. Just a junior, she has a chance to surpass 1,000 career points this season. She has already been named all-conference two times. Madison Worke — This versatile wing averaged almost 12 points and five rebounds per night last year. She will team-up with Hagen to create one of the strongest defensive tandems in the conference. At 5-foot-10, she can guard every position on the floor and play just as many on offense. Look for her to add another all-conference season to her already impressive resume.
OUTLOOK The Awesome Blossoms finished 10-4 in the conference last season and put together two five-game winning streaks and another four-game streak. Led by Hagen, Worke and senior shooting guard Sara Noble, Blooming Prairie will contend for a top three spot in the Gopher Conference once again this season. However, it’s going to take a major upset to knock off powerhouse NRHEG and future Golden Gopher Carlie Wagner. The Blossoms, though, could make a deep run in the postseason if they can get their point guard situation squared away early on. Noble is the only senior on the squad but Hagen and Worke have been playing varsity as a high level since their freshman years. The team will be tested out of the gates with four consecutive road games to start the season.

With a strong senior core in place, the Huskies are sharpening their teeth for a strong showing in the Big Nine Conference and Section 1AA playoffs. Owatonna, which finished 13-11-1 last season and lost in the opening round of sections to Lakeville South, will be looking to carve itself into the top-3 of a tough Big Nine. Mankato West and Rochester Mayo are the favorites to contend for the league title, while Owantonna, Rochester John Marshall and Rochester Century should be in a rat race of the third spot. However, loaded with experience and depth, the Huskies could surprise people and make a run for the league crown. Along with seniors Kirsch and Colstrup, fellow seniors Jordan Klein (nine goals, four assists) and Brian Kidd (one goal, four assists), arguably Owatonna’s top defenseman, will help ring-lead the Huskies this season.

Owatonna senior Aaron Kirsch
NEED TO KNOW
Aaron Kirsch – The speedy senior center brings back a team-high 28 points to the Huskies as he compiled eight goals and 20 assists last year as a junior. “He has a knack to put up a lot of points,” OHS coach Josh Storm said. On top of that, the All-Big Nine Conference regular may be the fastest player on the ice night in and night out. Soren Colstrup – When this senior wing has the puck, chances are good things will happen. Colstrup, an All-Big Nine honoree, brings speed and exceptional stickhandling to the senior-laden Huskies. Colstrup returns the second-most points (21) and ties for bringing back the most goals with nine.

Coming off a second-place finish in the Big Nine Conference, the Huskies are expecting to do one better this year. With good reason. The Huskies return a handful of their top scorers from last year led by senior Abby Sawyer’s team-best 41 points. Adding to the scoringmix will be seniors Paige Radue and Payton Noble, who finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, last season. Defensively, Owatonna returns its starting goaltender and backup, Jessica Cole and Kacy Borwege, who OHS coach Tim Hunst feels is the best goalie combination in the Big Nine. Owatonna will have to snare the conference crown from defending champ Mankato East and fend off league front-runner Rochester John Marshall, which finished just one point behind OHS in the league standings last year.

On the ice, the senior forward, who led Owatonna with 41 points (24 goals, seven assists) last season and already has a hat-trick this year, is a constant scoring threat when the silver and blue hold the puck. Payton Noble – The senior forward, who had 14 points a year ago (five goals, seven assists), got off to a blazing start this year, pumping in four goals in Owatonna’s 6-5 season-opening win over Winona. According to Coach Hunst, Noble, who played more of a finesse style earlier in her career, has transformed into a grittier, hard-nosed player. “She’s going to score ugly goals. Now that she’s embraced that she’s going to be tough to stop,” Hunst said.

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING OUTLOOK The reigning Big Nine Conference and Section 1AAA champions shouldn’t miss a beat this season. The Huskies, coming off a 23-8 dual meet record, bring back a bevy of the lineup that helped them grit to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament last season. A roster that includes four individual state-qualifiers such as freshmen Brandon Moen (38-9) and Tanner Cole (37-8), junior Spencer Sorenson (35-4) and senior Tyler Sorenson (3014). Other Huskies sure to put up a bevy of points are seniors Tyler Vogt (27-16), Brenden Buryska (26-18) and Jake Woodrich (20 wins). Sure, Owatonna may have lost some pieces but the bulk of its state-caliber puzzle is returning. Looking to keep Owatonna from defending its Big Nine crown will be Albert Lea and Rochester Mayo, while the section title contenders include Hastings, which OHS beat for the 1AAA title a year ago, Farmington and Mayo.
Notably, Albert Lea dropped down to Section 1AA.

Spencer Sorenson – The Huskies’ heavyweight is coming off a third-place title at the Class AAA state championships. Sorenson, Owatonna’s anchor in more ways than one, finished his sophomore campaign with a 35-4 overall record. The junior will undoubtedly be gunning for a state title this year. Brandon Moen – As an eighth-grader last year, Moen compiled a 38-9 overall record, grappling all the way to the third-place title match at state. There, Moen was outdone in the 113-pound showdown to finish with fourth-place hardware. Needeless to say, Moen is one of the top freshmen grapplers in the state. Owatonna freshman Brandon Moen

SCHEDULE
Despite losing four starters from a team that won 24 games in 2013-14, the Owatonna Christian School won’t be short of experience entering the new season. In all, five seniors return from last year, led by Rachel Trunnell. Last year, she was the team’s leading scorer and will no doubt be asked to carry the biggest offensive load entering 2013-14. Also coming back are classmates Janae and Jenessa Jorgensen, both of which saw action as starters as juniors. Sarah Peterson and Elaina Tverberg will likely round out the starting rotation.

OWATONNA HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SWIMMING NEED TO KNOW Quentin Slagter – Freestyles, backstroke, butterfly. There really isn’t an event the senior co-captain hasn’t competed and thrived in for the Huskies. He finished eighth at last year’s Section 1AA championships in the 200 IM. Zachary Dantzman – The senior co-captain is the Huskies’ leader on the boards. Dantzman is coming off a runner-up finish at the Section 1AA meet and a 15th-place finish at last year’s Class AA Diving Championships.
OUTLOOK
ROSTER
Last season the senior-laden Huskies finished fifth in the Big Nine Conference and sixth in the Section 1AA championships. Dropping from 13 seniors to only two this year – co-captains Quentin Slagter and Zachary Dantzman – Owatonna will need a boost from its large and talented junior class led by Brodie Thiedem, Aaron Evans and Micah BigEagle. Freshman Windham Anez will is also expected to come on strong in the lanes this year. With Faribault, Austin and powerhouse Rochester Century (the reigning conference and section champ) reloading, look for the Huskies to be clawing for another middle-of-the-pack finish in the Big Nine and Section 1AA. Sam Hager and Peter Rhodes take over as interim co-head coaches. Michael Belting resigned earlier this fall after four seasons at the helm.

A Great, Fun Experience
Aaron Kirsch
NEED TO KNOW Aaron Kirsch — This Owatonna senior has been playing with the team since the puck dropped on the season in September in preparation for his final high school campaign. In 13 total contests, he has registered five points, all on assists. When the Huskies begin their season, he will exclusively play for OHS and re-join the Blades when that season concludes. In total, he’ll play 50-plus games between the two teams in a four month span.
OUTLOOK
ROSTER
After a rough start, the Blades have steadied the ship thanks in part to a strong record on their home ice. Since beginning the season on a seven-game losing streak, Steele County has gone 5-5, winning three of five games at home in the span. Pulling players from around the globe, across the country and right here in Owatonna, the Blades’ roster has players from nine different states and the Ukraine. As of Nov. 22, Jake Hainline of Wheaton, Illinois leads the team in points with 15 on seven goals and eight assists. Josh Larson leads the team with eight goals and 14 total points. Adam Ranck and Kenny Eakle have shared time in the net, allowing roughly 3.7 goals against each.
