Machinery Valtra’s new five-model Q-series slots neatly between existing T-series and larger S-series models, with power outputs from 230–305hp, standard CVT transmission and a long wheelbase, plus an extremely comfortable cab.
Additional models satisfy demand for year-round tractors There is a growing market for the new generation of versatile 300hp tractors – capable of primary cultivations, but light and manoeuvrable enough for yard work and crop applications. Valtra’s new Q-series enters the market this autumn. David Williams reports. of scope for ballasting for demanding draft work, but also allows heavy loads to be transported legally.
The Q-series, nicknamed ‘The Beast’ by Valtra for its official press launch, is completely new and built at Valtra’s Suolahti factory in Finland. Five models from 230–305hp all share a 3,050mm wheelbase, and they fit in between the current popular T series which includes models from 155– 271hp with a 2,995mm wheelbase, and the largest S-series which starts at 270hp (300hp with boost) with a 3,105mm wheelbase. The new Q-series weighs in at only 9.2t unladen but has a maximum gross weight of 16.0t which provides plenty
Efficient, long-stroke engine Power is from a 7.4-litre AgcoPower engine, and drive is through a hydromechanical CVT transmission shared with other brands in the Agco family – in a move away from Valtra’s exclusive Direct CVT used in smaller models in Valtra’s line-up. On models with boost mode – the additional power is delivered only

when the engine and transmission management system detects that it is needed – and it is also available during stationary working applications. Torque from the efficient, longstroke engine remains almost constant between 1,000–1,500rpm. The electronic engine and transmission management system always selects the lowest possible engine revs for the working conditions and task, for maximum fuel efficiency. The transmission has two ranges – field work and transport. A mix of hydraulic and mechanical drive is used, although on the road, at higher transport speeds, power is transferred almost exclusively through the mechanical section for optimum efficiency. Maximum speed is 50kph – achieved at just 1,500rpm.
Comfortable work environment The cab is similar to the T-series which was recently updated and comes with an attractive and functional A-pillar screen which displays essential operating information. Ride comfort is assured by air suspension used for the front axle and cab, coupled with the long wheelbase. Valtra claims that as well as providing optimum ride quality, the air suspension also increases traction as it reacts more quickly to undulations than competitor hydraulic suspension systems. It is also less affected by climatic conditions, so ride quality remains excellent all year around. Hydraulic lift capacity is 10t and up to 200 litres of hydraulic oil flow is available.
of specifications, it is known that the machines will boast Smart farming systems capable of handling the most demanding machinery and sending and accepting complex field and task data. Like other Valtra tractors, the widestpossible range of options is available through the factory’s Unlimited Studio – including a massive choice of colours. First dealer deliveries will start in October and the flagship Q305 will be first to arrive.
Dealer view “We are very excited by the addition of Valtra’s Q-series to the line-up,” explained RW Crawford Ltd managing director Wes Crawford. “We represent Valtra in Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and Hampshire, and although the existing T- and S-series models will remain very popular with our customers, I think that there are many situations where the new Q-series will have great appeal. Being so well suited to so many tasks, these tractors will operate all year around which helps justify the investment even for smaller farms, and for the drivers these tractors offer what must be the best cab and most comfortable ride available. “We didn’t hesitate ordering new Q-series models for stock and as demonstrators and believe they will appeal to all sizes and types of farming enterprise across our operating area.” FG
Capable and extremely versatile The new Q-series is joining a very competitive market sector where the power, size and weight means that there are tasks for the tractors all year around, so they clock up large numbers of hours. Although Valtra hasn’t yet confirmed the full range
The Q-series shares its cab design with the popular T-series.
