September – December 2015

welcome Hopefully, by the time this is printed, we will have transformed the Great Hall into a more comfortable, flexible and up-to-date space that better meets the needs of the town. We should also have refurbished the toilets. Hopefully. This is only the latest adventure in a 50 year history of adaptation and reinvention. No doubt new ambitions and purpose will emerge. Who could have believed that five years ago a central part of our programme would be showing live performances from the National Theatre and the New York Met, or that there would be an audience for visual arts shared digitally? But we are delighting in the growth of the audience for contemporary theatre and the craft programme. All this and, from this autumn, the first 40 young people begin their degree in Acting and Performance with UCA based here. Of course none of this would be happening if a small group of far-sighted people had not stepped forward and saved these buildings, followed by the thousands who have volunteered, stuffed envelopes, bought tickets, stuck with us as we improve, talked affectionately, attended endless committee meetings and, most importantly, made use of these buildings. The result is a fantastic asset for the town. A set of buildings which, I genuinely believe, contribute to the shape and character of Farnham. Long may we do so. Gavin Stride Director

UCA FORTHCOMING EXHIBITIONS

FORTHCOMING EXHIBITIONS AT UCA FARNHAM Barbara Walker Sub Urban: New drawings 1 September – 8 October 2015

photographs of anonymous individuals photographed by the artist in and around the Farnham area. Sub Urban considers stereotypes through the study of dress codes and fashion worn primarily by young people. Through the use of portraiture and ‘traditional’ materials, scale and intricate compositions, Walker’s art offers a powerful mediation on both the representation and social status of the young in contemporary Britain.

Julia Keenan For the Sake of the Species 1 September –15 October 2015 Show and Tell – Charcoal wall drawing. New Art Gallery Wallsall (2011)

UCA’s Cultural Programme has invited Barbara to create a series of new sitespecific wall drawings for the James Hockey Gallery. Working in the gallery over the course of August and September, Walker’s resulting exhibition will comprise large-scale charcoal drawings made directly on to the gallery walls, which derive from 52

Recent UCA Fine Art graduate, Julia Keenan has been invited back to present a new installation. Keenan’s work is influenced by the work of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, and uses sculpture and photography to explore ideas of taboo, the unspoken and sexuality. In For the sake of the species Keenan makes narratives through objects and materials, which are transformed into hybrid compositions of uncanny and fetishlike curiosities.

Mina Okuhata – Eye, artificial nails (2013)

The culture of ‘cute’ or Kawaii is a highly successful commercial tool, associated with ephemera and fashion, and as such is very attractive to the young. It is the exact

opposite of the slow, highly crafted artefacts associated with traditional Japan. The most famous manifestation of Kawaii, ‘Hello Kitty’, has become a global brand with its own theme park in Tokyo. The exhibition ‘Kawaii - crafting the Japanese culture of cute’ brings together 15 contemporary Japanese artists who are using traditional craft skills to translate, comment upon and engage with all aspects of Kawaii. The works reflect Kawaii’s commercial appeal to the pink princess in all of us, no matter what age or sex. They also allude to the transgressive, dark, and exploitative nature of sexual politics. Participating artists: Shin Enomoto,Yasuko Fujino, Gendai-bijutsu nitouhei, Ichizo Ino, Aya Kametani,Chie Kinoshita, Mikkiko Minewaki, Minako Nishiyama, Suzumi Noda, Chika Ohgi, Mina Okuhata, Chie Sakai, Mitsuo Toyazaki, Nobuko Tsutsumi, Yu Ushida.

Farnham Maltings works with south east based artists and companies to help make the best work possible. In support of craft and fine artists we manage a range of studio spaces and offer training and networking opportunities. For theatre companies we provide one-to-one advice sessions, residency and R&D space, tour booking and financial management. Visit our theatre microsite: theatre.farnhammaltings.com

We run greenhouse, a three year initiative aimed at helping contemporary theatre thrive across the south east of England by better connecting the ambitions of theatre makers, venues and audiences. www.housetheatre.org.uk/greenhouse/ International

Producing and commissioning

We run caravan, in partnership with Brighton Festival, as a biennial showcase of new English performance to an international audience. www.caravanshowcase.org.uk

We work with a number of companies and individual artists in the production of their work, sometimes as a collaboration or in co-production.

We have a sister company in Canada, Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto with whom we regularly exchange work and develop joint projects.

Touring

no strings attached

We tour our own work and that of our associate companies, support a network of rural venues across Surrey and are continuing to build relationships with small scale theatres and art centres.

We manage no strings attached – a grant scheme for the south east region that offers awards between £500 and £1,000 to help young people, aged between 18 and 25, make their first piece of performance. This year, in partnership with Unlimited, we are offering a specific no strings attached grant to ensure young disabled artists are supported. For more information contact Julia Clague on 01252 745471 or julia.clague@ farnhammaltings.com

We deliver house, a programme designed to meet the ambitions of venues to increase audiences and improve the range, quality and scale of theatre being presented across the south east of England. www.housetheatre.org.uk box office: 01252 745444
