Farnham Maltings Autumn 2016 Brochure

Page 1

September – December 2016

welcome Earlier this summer, at the height of uncertainty after a referendum in which more than one commentator spoke about ‘post truth politics’ we had a staff meeting to discuss the civic role we play in contributing to the shape of our community through the things we do and the way we behave. We want to ensure the Maltings is a meeting place for everyone. Young and old, new and long established residents. We do this in the belief that we are undoubtedly a more cohesive, stronger community if everyone feels connected. I am told by the Police that fear of crime is a far bigger challenge for the police than crime itself. That the more isolated we are, the more cautious we become. So we want the Maltings to be a place where you might meet someone unlike yourself and feel comfortable. Which is why I delight in seeing the University’s performing arts students sitting cheek by jowl with a U3A Spanish class or Stopgap dance company working in the room next to Chaos Choir. And that the monthly market makes way for the New York Met or a wedding reception. We want this building to be permeable, for it to be as easy as possible to walk in and discover more about what you might do here. And it is working. In the last month alone I have met two people who have recently moved to Farnham. One from London and one returning from Europe. Both said that the reason they chose Farnham was the Maltings and that they felt there is an access point into the community. It also makes me smile to see at the end of almost every estate agent’s house details ‘Farnham has a good range of schools and Farnham Maltings’. They see our value to the community. From that initial staff meeting back in the summer we have decided to host an event – currently called the Maltings afternoon tea, on Sat 10 September. It is one way that we think we can express a view of a community that feels comfortable with itself. We are still working on the details but you are all most welcome. Gavin Stride Director

We have a sister company in Canada, Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto with whom we regularly exchange work and develop joint projects.

Touring

no strings attached

We tour our own work and that of our associate companies, support a network of rural venues across Surrey and are continuing to build relationships with small scale theatres and art centres.

We manage and deliver no strings attached – a grant scheme for the south east region that offers awards between £500 and £1,000 to help young people, aged between 18 and 25, make their first piece of performance.
