September – December 2017
welcome Since our inception almost 50 years ago we have held an ambition to be more than a building. We are curious to find ways to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to express who they are, to improve the quality of peoples’ lives and to pay particular attention to those at the margins of our community. Never before has this felt more significant. In a world that appears to be increasingly divided I sometimes struggle to understand how we respond to events but am certain of the value of working on the idea of a cultural democracy in which everyone has an opportunity to express who they are. Town planners talk about how each of us needs three spaces in our lives: one for living, one for work and a third for playing and imagining. Our hope is that we can be that third space for as many people as possible. This might mean sometimes working outside the buildings, because however hard we try some people won’t feel comfortable coming into a public space. It could mean running programmes of work for particular audiences – young people or the newly old, making our own work as a description of our community, doing things no-one would expect – like hosting an afternoon tea for everyone new to our community – building relationships with artists and communities in other parts of the world or caring, as we do, for the museum. We retain an inextinguishable belief in the value of culture in all our lives and in creating a safe place in the centre of the town in which people can connect, learn, enjoy and play. Thanks, Gavin Stride Director
