WELCOME

welcome One of my favourite stories about the Maltings surrounds an evening when, as often is the case, a number of events were happening in different parts of the building at the same time. These included a Mozart Ensemble, or some such, who were horrified to discover that Gimmick, Gimmick, Gimmick, who sing Abba songs, were playing in the Great Hall whilst they were in the Barley Room. One of the ensemble players spoke to the Front of House manager with complete disdain about being in the building at the same time as a ‘crummy tribute act’ to which the front of house manager replied – and they will stand in my affection for ever for this – ‘but surely, the Mozart Ensemble are also a tribute act, only your composer has been dead for longer’. As it happens both events took place for different audiences without incident, but I hold dear the thought that we should be careful about the assumptions and prejudices we make in deciding who these buildings are for and how people celebrate and describe who they are. I hope we behave less like missionaries taking people on the road to enlightenment and more as a space for everyone to enter on their own terms, comfortably. And that people tell us, if we aren’t doing that. Gavin Stride Director

RIVERSIDE CAFÉ BAR

riverside café bar

*subject to programming The Riverside Café Bar is the ideal venue to unwind during the day. Why not enjoy a freshly made lunch either on our patio or in the café. Riverside Café serves Cupsmith Coffee (roasted in Farnham), a selection of cakes, sandwiches to eat in or take away along with snacks, ice creams and more. We welcome both children and well-behaved four-legged friends. Or, why not dine with us in the evening, indicated by the symbol alongside selected shows in this brochure. All food is freshly prepared on site by our own chefs, and locally sourced where possible. For details of the menu please look at the individual event page on farnhammaltings.com. Food is served from 90 minutes and up to 30 minutes before the performance begins, and needs to be ordered before midday the day before. Riverside Café Gallery exhibitions 14 Sep – 11 Oct

Farnham Maltings works with south-east-based artists and companies to help make the best work possible. In support of craft and fine artists we manage a range of studio spaces and offer training and networking opportunities. For theatre companies we provide one-to-one advice sessions, residency and R&D space, tour booking and financial management. Visit our theatre microsite: theatre.farnhammaltings.com Producing and commissioning

International

We work with a number of companies and individual artists in the production of their work, sometimes as a collaboration or in co-production.

We run caravan – a programme of work designed to encourage England-based theatre makers to think and work internationally. caravan encompasses a biennial showcase in partnership with Brighton Festival, on-going and one-off projects with international partners and professional development opportunities for artists.

Touring We tour our own work and that of our associate companies, support a network of rural venues across Surrey and are continuing to build relationships with small scale theatres and art centres. We deliver house – a programme designed to meet the ambitions of venues to increase audiences and improve the range, quality and scale of theatre being presented across the south-east of England. housetheatre.org.uk

Happy. Natural. Resilient. We believe learning should go beyond the walls of a classroom or the questions on an exam. We believe children need time and space to learn - to find their strengths and their weaknesses - to see the world as full of opportunities, not obstacles. If you too want your child to thrive in a natural environment, come and see what we’re all about. www.frensham.org
