WELCOME

welcome I think the Maltings is an extraordinary resource which many towns up and down the country would love to have in their midst. It is, I believe, a mixture of good luck and the hard work of thousands of people that has got us here, and I am constantly reminded of the numerous small acts that have contributed to making this organisation the resilient, cared-for institution that it is. Thank you everyone who has helped us get to this point. For me, one of the greatest things about the Maltings is that we are not in a purpose-built building that tells us what to do, but in one that has evolved from a previous use. I would also say, perhaps provocatively, that we have benefited from not having received the type of major capital grant that would require us to meet the expectations of the funder. This means we are far more able to adapt, evolve, test ideas – play, even – as we work at meeting the changing needs of our community. Which is why you will see us putting on more informal events, presenting work outside the buildings, collaborating with the health authority and community organisations, and running projects with the Hale community and the Gostrey Centre. It is why we continue to care for the museum service and how we hold the collective memory of the town. The other people we should thank are Farnham Town Council and Waverley Borough Council who have remained committed to investing in culture in extraordinarily difficult times. Our task is to repay that faith by continuing to do everything we can to contribute to the quality of life of all the people of the town.
