May – August 2014
welcome Late last year the Community Foundation for Surrey produced the Surrey Uncovered report that explored the current ‘health’ of the county. One startling fact from the report is that over the next 6 years Waverley is predicting an almost 30% increase in people aged over 85. In our subsequent conversations with Waverley BC it became obvious that they shared an ambition to find creative responses to this prediction. So we are developing a new initiative entitled mind full maltings; a programme of activities aimed specifically for elders, many in partnership with others, including new activities and an Alzheimer Café. We have also identified events that might be of particular interest in * symbol. Our hope is that we can develop this work, this brochure with a new adapt the buildings where we can and use the Maltings to encourage connections between every part of our community. All with the ambition to ensure our community thrives now and for years to come. Besides the activities that happen at the Maltings there are some remarkable recent successes for the companies and artists based here. Stopgap Dance, the extraordinary integrated dance company, has just agreed a partnership to work with the Royal Opera House; our resident puppet maker, Max Humphries, who has recently finished work with the National Theatre, is making a set of puppets for Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris; and we are talking to the Royal Court about touring a piece of their work to village halls across the country. So, despite the times we find ourselves in, we are busy and brim full of ideas for the future. Thank you for using and enjoying these buildings. It is this, above all else, that encourages us. Gavin Stride Director * This symbol highlights events that are part of the mind full maltings programme. Many of the mind full maltings activities are hosted in partnership with other local organisations, and are programmed to better welcome elders and those with dementia into our building. Events range from classic film screenings to evening tea dances, with a relaxed atmosphere and free or subsidised tickets to promote accessibility for all. The Riverside Café Bar is open Mon – Sat. Mon & Tue 9.30am–5pm, food served 10am–2.30pm; Wed – Fri 9.30am–8pm, food served 10am–7.30pm; Sat 10am–5pm, food served 10.30am–2.30pm. This symbol highlights that visitors are able to enjoy a snack or meal in the Riverside before Wed – Fri evening shows, and at other selected events. cover : heidi shininger , www . retrogirlredux . etsy . com
