Farnham Maltings Summer 2015 Brochure

May – August 2015

welcome I am told that the Chinese symbol for crisis is the same as the symbol for opportunity which is a view of the world that I have some sympathy for. Whilst we try and make sense of an ever-changing world perhaps we should think differently about the things we do rather than continue to try and make old models work with less. Organisations like us need to consider how we become more useful to more people. Which is why we hosted the hustings for the General Election and ran a parallel event for 16 and 17 year olds. Because we are concerned about how people shape their lives. It’s also why we have appointed someone to lead an Arts and Elders programme – paid for through our patrons group. Apparently of all the people born yesterday, half will live to be 100 and one will live to be 140. We needed to consider how we respond to this. So you will see us running new choirs, hosting repair cafÊs, showing films at different times of the day, working with doctors and care home providers and sometimes offering afternoon tea. Because we want to make the most of these buildings. Hopefully you will know that we have been successful in securing major investment from Arts Council England and Waverley Borough Council to refurbish the Great Hall to create a flexible, technically well-resourced space with new heating and better configured seating. The ambition is to do everything that we currently do, better. I am reminded in this moment of all those people who, in the past 40 years, have shovelled earth, sat in committee meetings, donated books, painted walls and believed in the value of having a public space in the centre of the town to imagine, play and connect. We will be busy this summer. Gavin Stride Director

Farnham Maltings is always looking to continue developing a programme which best suits the needs of the community and to adapt the building to provide audiences with the best experience possible. Thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England and Waverley Borough Council we are able to start the re-development of The Great Hall this summer to create a more adaptable, flexible space which can better serve all the people and organisations that use it. In addition to its current uses, we will be able to create a 230-seat studio space for live performance, provide better technical support and efficient heating systems. Because new legislation requires larger seats and more space between rows, the total capacity for the full hall will reduce slightly to around 400 but we are confident that overall the project will attract more and new audiences, increase the range of our programme and certainly make us more sustainable.

SUMMER PROGRAMME

future maltings

In addition, we will also be making improvements to the front-of-house toilets. We would like to send a big thank you to everyone who gave generously to the ‘Time to Go’ campaign. Without your support this would not have been possible. We continue to increase our ties with local schools and with the first intake of Acting and Performance students arriving at the University for the Creative Arts in September 2015 we look set to welcome new performers and exciting new work onto our stages in the coming years. If you would like to take an active part in the direction of the organisation please take a look at the ‘support us’ section for more information on becoming a Patron or a Member and volunteering from page 56.
