Farnham Maltings Summer 2017 Brochure

Page 1

May – August 2017

welcome For those of you who actually read these introductions you will spot a recurring theme – one that speaks about our desire to be useful and to contribute to the health and character of our town. And yet, when I look at all that is happening in the world just now, it can feel hard to feel positive about what we are achieving. In these moments I am reduced to remembering an argument with an eminent politician in which they said ‘you should get involved in politics’ to which I replied, without thinking, ‘I am far too busy trying to make the world a better place to get involved in politics’. I remain certain of that truth. That there is real value in creating a welcoming, democratic space in the centre of the town that is open to everyone. That by developing opportunities for us all to gather and share experiences with people not like ourselves, by putting together a programme of events that encourage imagination and thought and play, we will make thousands of small differences to peoples lives. And that this might all add up to something significant. If you are still reading this then there is one small, practical thing you can do that might make one small difference for us. And it is this: take a copy of this brochure and give it to someone you know, or better still, someone you don’t know. Tell them that we are curious and genuinely interested in being a place they might want to visit. Thanks Gavin Stride Director

Visit the Museum of Farnham to discover Farnham’s history, from its prehistoric roots to its hop growing boom and Victorian grandeur. The Museum is also home to an extensive art and craft collection thanks to the many artists and crafts workers who have been drawn to Farnham over the years. The Museum is located in a beautiful early Georgian town house, complete with many original features and a stunning walled garden hidden away behind the museum. Built in 1718 by a wealthy hop-grower, Willmer House is one of the many architectural gems in the town and well worth a visit for any lover of historic buildings.

SUPPORTING ARTISTS

supporting artists Farnham Maltings works with south east based artists and companies to help make the best work possible. In support of craft and fine artists we manage a range of studio spaces and offer training and networking opportunities. For theatre companies we provide one-to-one advice sessions, residency and R&D space, tour booking and financial management. Visit our theatre microsite: theatre.farnhammaltings.com

International

Producing and commissioning

We run caravan, in partnership with Brighton Festival, as a biennial showcase of new English performance to an international audience. caravanshowcase.org.uk

We work with a number of companies and individual artists in the production of their work, sometimes as a collaboration or in co-production.

We have a sister company in Canada, Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto with whom we regularly exchange work and develop joint projects.

Touring

no strings attached

We tour our own work and that of our associate companies, support a network of rural venues across Surrey and are continuing to build relationships with small scale theatres and art centres.

We manage and deliver no strings attached – a grant scheme for the south east region that offers awards between £500 and £1,000 to help young people, aged between 18 and 25, make their first piece of performance. For more information contact Steph Richardson on 01252 745427 or steph.richardson@ farnhammaltings.com

We deliver house, a programme designed to meet the ambitions of venues to increase audiences and improve the range, quality and scale of theatre being presented across the south east of England. www.housetheatre.org.uk 72

We run greenhouse, a three year initiative aimed at helping contemporary theatre thrive across the south east of England by better connecting the ambitions of theatre makers, venues and audiences. housetheatre.org.uk/greenhouse/
