featuring Ocean beach favorite places to eat, chill and play By Alex McNair

Sunset Cliffs exquisite sunset vistas

Cruise south on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. for some of the most picturesque views of the ocean in San Diego. The cliffs themselves are breathtaking testaments to years of weathering and erosion. The scene is perfectly set for an impromptu photo shoot with your man. After all, what’s more romantic than cuddling up for the sunset after a day of playing in the sun?

Gallagher’s a wee bit of ireland in ocean beach From “Surf’s up bra” to “Erin go Bragh,” Gallagher’s Irish Pub brings in quite the crowd as the highlight of the strip of bars on Newport Avenue. The décor transports the 21+ crowd to the Emerald Isle with pictures and crests from Ireland splashed on the green walls. Live local music varies from punk to reggae and is offered throughout the week with Irish bands featured on Saturdays. The happy-go-lucky vibe, blaring music and tasty drinks mean fun times dancing

with your friends. Sports and games are offered for those with two left feet, including Guitar Hero nights and shuffleboard tournaments. Gather around the fireplace to dish on the week’s gossip. Got your man in tow? He can catch the game on Dish Network sports playing around the bar. The staff is friendly and dressed like they may hop out from behind the counter to dance a jig. Love the pub? Become a mem-

ber of the mug club and you’ll not only have your personalized mug hanging above the bar, you also get a standard one dollar discount on your drafts. Gallagher’s offers Irish cocktails for those less fond of beers including the Leprechaun, a minty green drink that can be taken as a shot or sipped as a martini. Would the bar be authentic without a variety of whiskeys? I think not. Sample the offerings by ordering a whiskey flight and make sure to call a cab for a safe ride home.

While a sunset visit is a no-brainer, sunrise is also a great time of day to visit the cliffs. Sync up your iPod and hop on a bike or lace up your running shoes for an exhilarating run. You can catch views of the surf (and surfer boys), or hike down to the water’s edge for a private moment. While hiking the bluffs, take note as there are several secluded mini-beaches along the way. Take caution as some trails are steep and can be tricky. When hitting the beach, remember to skip the handbag and pack your towel and sunscreen in a backpack instead.

OB Noodle House

asian fusion and sake bar in heart of ocean beach The reggae beats and buzz of the crowd can be heard from down the block at OB Noodle House. Ocean Beach is known for hosting some of the best lesser-known places to eat, and the introduction of OB Noodle House in 2008 cemented the neighborhood’s reputation for good eats. Boasting Asian fusion as the center of cuisine, Noodle House offers some of the most flavorful dishes at the beach, including the Vietnamese classic pho, pronounced “fuh.” Pho is a flavorful beef broth noodle soup. Stop in at the bar for dollar beers and a kung fu movie during happy hour, or go with a group for dinner. The Noodle House is no secret amongst OB locals and the place can get packed on the weekends. Mob out with a group to share the 100 ounce Chang beer tower over crisp-skin garlic wings, or opt for a lighter appetizer by splitting tofu lettuce wraps. Work your way down the list of 38 beers on tap from around the world and finish it off with the sweet and scrumptious melon sake. Know someone with a big appetite? Rock the Pho 20 challenge by putting back two pounds of noodles, 1.5 pounds of meat and a pint of beer in 42 minutes and earn a spot on the Pho 20 wall of fame. Most of the menu offers your choice of protein from beef or chicken to tofu, meaning vegetarians in the group will satisfy their appetite as well. Every item is full of out-of-this world flavors that will keep you coming back for more.

DO’S and DON’TS OF

spring BREAK

It’s the time of year every college student looks forward to!

Ready to let loose, have fun and meet new people? Even though it’s time to let your hair down, every responsible spring-breaker should follow these 10 tips! by Jillian dyer

10

MARCH 2011 // fashionfivEo.com

1 2

6

DON’T forget your camera.

DO flirt with a cute boy.

7 8

You know that guy from school who ended up at the same resort as you and your girlfriends? You’ve seen him around school and had an eye on him in the dining hall. This could be your chance to actaully meet him. Hurry up and say hi because you know he’s hot!

3

DON’T get attached.

Any spring break hook-up is likely to be a fling. Don’t get all “stalkerazzi” and blow up his phone and Facebook page once you’re back to reality. No one likes a bug-a-boo and you will just look like a desperate fool!

DON’T leave a friend behind.

Especially in favor of a guy! The buddy system should work in full force during your nights out, even if you’d rather exchange your girlfriend for a hot male upgrade! Never leave a friend alone just because you’re smitten, you will regret it in the morning.

4 5

DO keep it to yourself.

Remember that what happens on Spring Break stays at Spring Break! Unless you have your friend’s approval to share her “topless-kayaking-at-4am story,” then keep quiet. Always avoid lapses of judgment that could follow you back and haunt you for the rest of the semester.

You’re going to want to document all those memories you will be making! We recommend going with the old-school disposable cameras.

DO stay oriented.

Write the name of the hotel on your hand with permanent sharpie and always tell friends where you are going, who you will be with and when to expect you back. Never wander off with someone you just met, especially when in a foreign place. Remember to keep your phone charged and stay with your friends!

DO be safe.

9 10

You know what this means! Please use your brain, your common sense and heed that nagging advice mom gave to you even though you’re on vacation!

DON’T be a lobster face!

Getting sunburn on the first day will totally ruin your Spring Break. To avoid this, take advantage of your local tanning salon and get bronzed before your trip.

DON’T be that drunk person.

Slurring all of your words when meeting someone new is not attractive and if anyone does approach you, it’ll be for all the wrong reasons. With that in mind, never leave your drink unattended and only consume drinks that come directly from the bartender.

DO live it up!

Bring props, junk food, crazy outfits and anything else that’s bound to get you attention, a.k.a. get your PEACOCK on!

No passport? No problem, we’ve got you covered!

We all know that during spring break we want to get as far away from school as possible. If a foreign country is not in the mix this year then take a look at this compiled list of hot-spots. Who knows, after a visit to these places you may actually be begging to get back to class!

Popular Domestic Spring Break Locations. Get Your Party On! 1 Panama City Beach, Florida If you want wild and crazy here it is! Over a half a million college students looking to have a good time! 2 Miami/South Beach, Florida Miles of white sands, endless beaches and hot bodies. What is there not to like about this perennial hot spot?

4 South Padre Island, Texas Becoming increasingly popular. Scooters are a great way to get around! 5 San Diego, California Yep, you happen to live in one of the most popular spring break destinations in the world. Why leave if everybody else is coming here?

3. 5.

3 Las Vegas, Nevada Home to MTV Spring Break, March 6th-9th, 2011. If your style has been hampered by finals, this place will have you caught up in a hurry!

6.

1. 4.

2.

6 Lake Havasu, Arizona Once again Lake Havasu is proving that you don’t need to be next to the ocean to have a killer spring break!

music

fashion fiveo undercover

It all began with a trumpet and a marching band By Nohely Mendoza

PHOTOS BY david J. olender

Christofer “C-Money” Welter, 31, first encountered music in the 6th grade when he picked up his first trumpet in his school’s marching band and soon realized that music was the only subject he was good at. While focusing his attention on music, Welter also planned on a Navy career “doing underwater construction.” Let’s just say the focus paid off. 12

MARCH 2011 // fashionfivEo.com

“You either get with it and roll, or you get stomped on and left in the dirt and are looked at like some rusty old dinosaur.”

C-Money, 2/13/11

just dance! LADY GAGA Brings her Monster Ball Tour to San Diego By Mallory McClure

“I had to make the decision, military or music,” Welter stated. “I was 17 years old, fresh out of high school, so what do you do? I said to myself, ‘well if I don’t like the arts thing I can just enroll in the Navy, but if I don’t like that I’m going to get stuck with it.’ It was really a 50/50 thing.” With the motivation of his father and grandfather, Welter decided to pursue music. He was born in North Carolina where he lived until he turned 11 years old. He then moved to central Florida, then Wisconsin and finally to San Diego where he remains today. “In Wisconsin, I was left alone in like the cornfield and I could latch on more to music. It helped me to get away from the negative things I was getting sucked into in Florida such as gangs and drugs. I thank music and that move everyday because it was my salvation,” said Welter, “and it was weird because when I wanted to be in the Navy, all the Navy programs that I was looking at were all out here (San Diego), so I was like ‘San Diego, what’s up with that place?’ One way or another I was meant to be in San Diego.” Since then, Welter has created strong opinions about education systems, technology, labor and following what you believe in.

In regards to technology, Welter stated you have an important choice to make. “You either get with it and roll, or you get stomped on and left in the dirt and are looked at like some rusty old dinosaur.” Welter’s first encounter with Slightly Stoopid was over six years ago when his former band John Brown’s Body was opening up for them. They offered him a job and he immediately accepted. Joining the Stoopid team has allowed Welter to share the stage with many impressive musicians such as Bone Thugs N Harmony, Cypress Hill, Snoop Dog, Stephan Marley, Steel Pulse, Pepper, the Expendables, Collie Buddz and Sly and Robbie. According to Welter, the music industry has its ups and downs. “Giving up is never an option because if and when you give up, you’re never going to see it (music) on a deep enough level. You have to fall in love with your instrument and see it till the end,” said Welter. The name C-Money originates back in his day when he used to wear gold chains, specifically with money signs. “The money thing just kind of stuck. I’ve always loved gold I guess.”

Since her explosion onto the music scene in 2008, Lady Gaga has been pushing artistic and social boundaries, and has made a very public commitment to what she calls “the art of show business.” Gaga is just as unwaveringly devoted to her fans. After selling out nearly every North American date of her 2010 Monster Ball tour, the chart-topping singer decided to extend her tour into 2011, kicking things off on February 19 in Atlanta before making a stop (and most likely a scene) at San Diego’s Viejas Arena on March 29. According to Gaga, “I created the Monster Ball so that my fans would have a place to go, a place where all the freaks are outside.” If the first leg of her tour is any indication, it’s safe to say that San Diego’s “little monsters,” as Gaga affectionately refers to her fans, are in for a spectacular fusion of music, choreography, costumes and hopefully a little taste of her new album Born This Way, set to be released on May 23. Through outrageous outfits, a few smashed pianos and a whole lot of eccentric theatrics, Gaga’s concerts are set apart from today’s current pop stars. Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour is in support of her most recent album The Fame Monster, which is a follow-up to her 2008, Grammy-winning debut album, The Fame. Both albums combined have sold nearly 14 million copies worldwide and have produced a total of 7 number-one hits.

The increasing popularity of live-DJ performances has encouraged some local residents to take up the art. For DJ’s Erik Till, Jason Ross, Collin Perry and duo CalisParis, spinning is not only their passion, it’s a lifestyle. In addition to filling the ears of party-goers with new and innovative beats, they now find themselves to be San Diego’s favorite local DJ’s. MARCH 2011 //

JASON ROSS Eventvibe.com DJ Jason Ross continues to impress San Diego with his amazing talent and vibrant live performances. Days before opening for “Above and Beyond” at FLUXX, we caught up with Jason to see what his career is all about.

How and when did you begin working in the industry? It all started when I saw Chase Costello spin at a party at State (SDSU). I got in contact with him and he brought me under his wing. The month I turned 21 I had my first show with ATB at 4th & B and from then on, I’ve stayed with Eventvibe.

Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? I’m really getting into production right now, which I think is the way to branch out of the local area and really make it. One of my goals is to play at EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival). In five years, I’d definitely like to see myself headlining there!

What upcoming events do you have booked in San Diego? I’m actually playing at SWAT for spring break in Lake Havasu, opening for Steve Aoki the weekend of March 28th. I will also be opening for John O’Callaghan and Victor Dinaire at the Onyx Room on March 19th. (I’m) really looking forward to this one!

Who would your ideal collaboration be with? I’d love to work with “Above and Beyond,” that’d be a dream. I’m also a big fan of the productions of Mat Zo and Arty. They each have a very unique and moving sound that people can really connect with. It’d be amazing to collaborate with these guys!

Any final thoughts or shout outs? I want to give a big shout out to all of my friends and everyone for their amazing support. I couldn’t do this without any of you!

16

MARCH 2011 // fashionfivEo.com

French-American duo CalisParis, featuring Leo Goldstein and Miguel Rios, continue to please San Diegan’s with their new tracks and hot beats. After recently opening for Bob Sinclar at Fluxx, we spoke with CalisParis to see how their journey in the industry began.

How did you both get started in the industry? Miguel: After attending EDC, I fell in love with house music. Six months later I began DJing and eventually met Leo. That’s when my journey really began. Leo: I fell in love with house music after I purchased my first CD at the age of fifteen. Since then, I had the opportunity to spin at many places in Paris and eventually I moved to San Diego, met Miguel and that’s when things took off.

How did you two meet and decide to begin your collaboration? Miguel: We actually met by chance. Leo ended up renting a vacant room in my house one semester and we became close friends. I found out that we both had similar interests and loved house music and that’s when we began collaborating and making music together. We recently started working with Eventvibe which has been an amazing experience.

What has been your favorite event to spin at thus far? Miguel: My favorite event would definitely be the first time we spun together as CalisParis at the “Heaven and Hell” Halloween music festival (2010) at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We opened on the main stage for about 10,000 people. It was our first gig and an amazing experience! Leo: The best show for me was in Orange County at the Detroit Bar. We were headlining the night for the first time ever, which allowed us to play our actual style. (It was) such a great experience!

What can we expect from CalisParis in the remainder of 2011? Leo: We just got booked to play at Red Circle and we are also playing at San Diego State University’s “Green Fest!” We are also working hard to get some new tracks out as well as some remixes of our CalisParis originals.

Any shout outs or final thoughts? Miguel and Leo: We’d like to give a shout out to all of our friends. If it weren’t for them we wouldn’t have anything. They buy our tickets, come to our shows and support us all the way. Without them we wouldn’t be where we are today!

erik till collin perry Starry Eyed Production’s newest DJ, Collin Perry, continues to give San Diego the ultimate in house music entertainment. After recently spinning at his monthly residency, Vin de Syrah, we caught up with Collin to get an inside look at his career and see what shows he has coming up in March.

Why did you decide to pursue a career as a DJ? I’ve always been very musically oriented and I knew I wanted to become a DJ after I attended a house music concert in the streets of LA. It really turned me on to the electronic music scene.

Do you attribute your success to a particular person or event? I have to thank Matt Gerold and Chris and Pat English, they really helped me get my foot in the door and allowed me to get where I am today!

Tell us something we don’t know about you! I’m a very neat and tidy person. Things must always be in order for me to get any work done!

Where can we find you this month? I’m playing at both the Hard Rock and Ivy! On April 1st, I am opening for Umek at Voyeur, it’s going to be a crazy night.

What is your favorite event you’ve spun at during your career? My favorite event would definitely be the time I closed for Dirty South at 4th & B. It was a sold out show (and) there were about 5,000 people in attendance. It was an amazing night!

Any shout outs? I’d like to give a shout out to my mom and dad!

Starry Eyed Music’s Erik Till continually plays the hottest and newest music while spinning at many of the top San Diego nightclubs. After playing the sold out “Wintervention” at the Hard Rock this February, we met up with Erik to get the inside scoop on how he got into the business and see what he is up to this spring!

How did you know you wanted to pursue a career in this industry? After working a few suit and tie jobs, I realized I didn’t want to follow that path. I wanted to pursue a career in the music industry and follow my passion. I’ve been playing music in bands for a long time, but I started DJing only a few years ago!

Out of all the events you’ve spun at, which was the most memorable? That’s tough, but probably Eventvibe’s “Heaven and Hell” Halloween music festival (2010) at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. I played on the outdoor stage right before HyperCrush with about 10,000 people there. It was crazy!

What makes you unique as a DJ in the industry? I put the turntables away and now use cutting-edge music software and hardware, which is still new to many people in the industry. I use a program called Traktor with a device called a MIDI controller. It allows me much more control over the music and creative freedom with my mixing.

What upcoming events will you be spinning at in San Diego? I’ll be spining at the annual Mardi Gras Festival in Gaslamp on March 8th. I frequently spin at Stingaree, Ivy and Hard Rock. My birthday is coming up on the 22nd and I’ll be playing at Voyeur that night! Be there!

Any shout outs? Shout out to Starry Eyed Music, Consuul and my friends and family!

A healthy diet and daily exercise takes some will power but it really doesn’t require a superhuman effort. Integrating a few simple lifestyle changes can pack a big weight loss punch. Check out these 10 simple ways to lose weight and shape-up for the summer! by Micah Skye, L.N.M.T., N.C.

1

Eat Breakfast Every Day

People who eat breakfast tend to eat much less throughout the day than those who skip it. Opt for low-calorie, low-fat options to get your day started. A healthy breakfast will boost your day with both energy and nutrition. Try replacing the morning coffee with a fruit smoothie or an acai bowl for a week and see what happens!

2

Stay Active

Recently you have either been working out or you haven’t been. Relieve yourself of the pressure to stay fit and do something that inspires you to be active. San Diego offers several options such as riding bikes, skating, hiking, swimming and running. Bonus tip? Go hike Cowles Mountain for a fun, local activity that you can share with some friends!

3

Wait Fifteen, Stay Nice & Lean

Chew your food thoroughly and reduce your eating pace by taking one full breath in-between bites. Your body requires about

fifteen minutes to process your eaten food enough to feel satiated. Eating slower is a natural, healthy option that allows one to eat less and feel good about it.

4

Drink More Water!

Drinking some water before a meal reduces hunger. Known as the “Simple Diet,” this also benefits the body by increasing your hydration. Good hydration also allows you to exercise longer with greater intensity and will help you burn even more calories per workout. Substituting water for that sugary drink will reduce your caloric intake immediately!

5

Control Your Environment

When choosing wisely where to eat and what to stock your fridge with, healthy options become automatic. When it comes to parties or events, eat a healthy snack before you go. This will enable you to avoid binging on the buffet. This “pre-game” option allows you to enjoy the cheese dip without making a meal out of it!

6

Go for a walk

Fitness walking is an exercise that burns calories, builds muscle, strengthens the bones and is easy on the joints. Walking is also one of the best physical activities for sustained weight loss and improved physical health. This option is a great social opportunity too, so grab a friend and get your walk on today!

7

Eat More Fresh Produce

Increasing one’s fruit and vegetable intake will crowd out other high fat, high calorie foods that you might have originally been drawn to eat. Try making the veggies the focal point on your plate by starting lunch or dinner with a soup or salad.

8

Choose your Liquids Wisely

Alcoholic and processed sugar drinks are full of calories but neither reduce the feeling of hunger. Read the sugar content on beverage labels to become more aware of what you are in-

gesting. As stated previously, water is a great liquid option, however fresh vegetable and fruit juices are also healthy choices to hold you over between meals.

9

Modify Portions

If you only choose to do one of these ten tips, reducing your portions by 10%-20% will ensure your success in losing weight. Most portions, especially in America, are bigger than you need. Get instant portion control by using smaller bowls, cups and plates!

Close the Kitchen at Night

One easy-to-remember option is to only eat dinner while it’s light outside. Your body’s metabolism slows after dark, but if you are still hungy, then opt for a low-calorie, healthy snack. Try a cup of your favorite tea or light smoothie. Bonus tip? Brush your teeth right away so you will be less likely to desire to eat again.
