T
his is my absolute favorite time of the year, hands down. There is nothing like the hustle and bustle of the holidays, although I think we could all do without the hustle. I love that the temperatures have dropped (so far anyway) and given us San Diegans a reason to pull out our “winter wear” and put it to good use. I absolutely love these nights by the fire with my hot cocoa, the special holiday gatherings with friends and family and that special feeling in the air. There is no other time of year quite like it. Our December issue isn’t like any other, either. This issue is packed full of the “good stuff,” from warm and fuzzy desserts to a holiday drink menu, healthy holiday recipes to all the hottest looks in fashion and the greatest gifts to give all those special people in your life. Men, if you’re reading this, trust us on this stuff, this gift guide is gold for what to get that special lady in your life. We also had the privilege of having Sons of Anarchy’s Winter Ave Zoli as our gorgeous cover model. This actress is stunning, and she took some time to answer some of our questions. December also brings this year to a close. 2012 was a good one, but full of many lessons, challenges and several blessings, just as any year. Having made a name for herself portraying the porn star girlfriend of a bad boy biker on the acclaimed network drama Sons of Anarchy, Winter Ave Zoli has become recognized as one of Hollywood’s new rising stars. In this month’s issue, Zoli was thrilled to portray a side that represents bold, fearless fashion. According to Zoli, “The shoot was fun, easy and relaxed. Robert was super funny and friendly. He made the job so easy. Balboa Park is definitely somewhere I’d like to go back to.”
Robert Dahey is a Del Mar-based commercial and fashion photographer whose images have appeared in multiple publications both locally and nationally. With his wide range of talent and industry knowledge, Dahey remains one of San Diego’s top recognized photographers. In regard to working with this month’s Fashion 5.0 cover girl Winter Ave Zoli, Dahey stated, “Winter was definitely an eminent pro. She is a woman who has taken her beauty to the next level by becoming a talented actress.”
Upon graduating from the Art Institute of Miami, Ashley managed Wink Retails’ W Store at the W Hotel Miami. She was then selected as one of New York Magazine’s “Twenty Most Stylish People from Day Four of Fashion Week” at NYFW 2010 and moved to San Diego to pursue her vintage career as EA Vintage. Regarding her role at Fashion 5.0, Ashley stated, “I’m very proud to have the opportunity to influence fashionistas all over town and feel very confident about the new direction we’re headed in.”

The family-owned restaurant entices diners with authentic, high-quality fare without a startling price tag. The roasted beet salad is beautifully presented with wedges of avocado and creamy chunks of pistachio-crusted goat cheese. Caramelized walnuts and gorgonzola cream create a savory and pungent peak to the spread in the walnut gorgonzola pasta while classic pasta dishes, like the Tuscan seafood pasta with black linguini, keep locals coming back. Save room for a walnut pecan chocolate chip cookie, served warm from the oven and topped with Tahitian vanilla gelato. Looking for a healthy holiday alternative? These five gluten-, sugar- and dairy-free options are sure to please the palate. BY DREW CANOLE
BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP Cook Time: 45 minutes Servings: 4+ Ingredients 6 cups butternut squash, cubed 2 cloves garlic 1 ¼ cup onions, diced 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 ¼ cup celery, diced 1 cup carrots 8 cups vegetable stock 1-2 bay leaves 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper ¼ green apple, diced 3 small leaves basil Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cube butternut squash and mix with olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until soft. In a large pot, heat celery, carrots, onions, salt and pepper on low. Add butternut squash, vegetable stock and bay leaves. Increase heat to medium and cook for 10-12 minutes. When ready, blend on medium/high heat until creamy. Garnish with diced apple and basil leaves.

GINGER HONEY SALMON OVER LIME SHIITAKE MUSHROOM QUINOA SALAD Cook Time: 30 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients Salmon: 4-6 oz. salmon per serving ½ lime 3 tbsp. raw honey, warmed Quinoa: 1 cup dry quinoa 2 cups Shiitake or portobello mushrooms, chopped
2 shallots 1 small red bell pepper 2 cups vegetable stock 3 leaves basil, diced 5-6 diced leaves mint, diced ½ lime 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper
Directions Bring vegetable stock to a boil. Add quinoa and put on low heat. Add peppers, shallots and mushrooms, and cook until all the stock is absorbed. Add basil, mint, salt and pepper. Finish with lime juice. Mix honey and lime and drizzle onto salmon. Cook salmon in pan (cast iron if possible) for 7 minutes per side, or approximately 12 minutes if covered with lid. Finish plate by topping quinoa with salmon filet.

ROASTED YAM PECANS AND SPICED GROUND LEAN TURKEY

Ingredients Salad: 2 cups Brussels sprouts, slivered ½ cup walnuts 1 red onion, sliced ½ cup cranberries
Ingredients Yams: 4 medium yams 2 tbsp. shallots, diced 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 cup coconut milk 1 cup pecans 1-3 tsps. salt & pepper
Dressing: 2 lemons 2 cloves garlic ½ cup olive oil 1 tbsp. raw honey, warmed ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. pepper 1 tsp. Dijon mustard Directions Blend lemon, garlic, olive oil, raw honey, salt, pepper and Dijon mustard. In a large bowl, mix with Brussels sprouts, onion, cranberries and walnuts.
Turkey: 1 lb. lean ground turkey 2 tbsp. olive oil 1 cup tomatoes, chopped 1 tbsp. cumin 1 tbsp. chili powder ½ tbsp. paprika ½ tbsp. cinnamon salt and pepper
Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake yams for 40 minutes, peel and mash. On medium heat, add yams to olive oil and diced shallots. Cook for 3 minutes, add coconut milk, then cook for 3 more minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste, then add pecans and mix. Mix turkey, olive oil, tomatoes, cumin, chili powder, paprika and cinnamon. Cook approximately 10 minutes or until turkey is ready. Add salt and pepper to taste. Plate yams and top with ground turkey and pecans.

Hailing from Georgia, Ron Pope is a singer-songwriter made famous by the internet hit “A Drop in the Ocean,” released in 2005. Pope’s success resulted in an appearance on MTV’s Total Request Live in 2008. From there, he quickly went on to pursue a career as a solo artist which has led to several national tours as well as yearly international tours throughout Europe. ope’s music career has been a very interesting viral phenomenon. His fans take a certain ownership of his music and songs, ultimately feeling the need to pass them along for a globally viral effect. Unlike many internet sensations, however, his music has reached the mainstream audiences as well. From the hit FOX reality TV series So You Think You Can Dance to features on CW’s The Vampire Diaries and 90210, Pope has emerged as a new household name. Just before his San Diego performance at Lestat’s on September 28, Pope and his fiancée Blair Clark walked across the street to Tao’s to grab a bite. Pope’s “on the road” lifestyle is demanding, yet he quickly established his skills as a cook. Every now and then, he’ll dig deep into his Italian roots and pull off an ever impressive grand feast for the gang consisting of deep red tomato sauce from scratch, with meatballs, antipasto, prosciutto and the works. That evening, Pope wore a stylish mini-harmonica necklace and when questioned about fashion, he was surprisingly knowledgeable. His favorite dinner jacket is one by Robert James, a preferred designer from the Lower Eastside of Manhattan. He described it as a red sparkle dinner jacket with “bad-ass” lapels tailored to perfection. According to Pope, when he made it big he treated himself to a John Varvatos jacket. At Lestat’s West, Pope took the stage immediately following dinner at 10 p.m. His powerful voice, mixed with blues and grassroots tones, created a very relaxed yet powerful vibe. Between tracks his personality floated over the crowd with comedy and charm, which brought everyone together in an intimate setting. “One Grain of Sand,” from his 2012 LP Atlanta, was an early highlight from the show which took the audience from a place of laughter to one of immediate introspective depth that did nothing short of freeze time. In a world filled with technology and distraction, Ron Pope infuses a renewed sense of family values which wields a vision filled with the universal appreciation of loving relationships. For those looking for entertainment that demands an intimate, heartfelt response and true appreciation of life, a dose of Pope may be just what the doctor ordered.

What do you think of your character Lyla’s wardrobe on Sons of Anarchy?
Lyla’s clothes aren’t quite my sense of style but it’s fun. It’s always great to be a character who is so far from who you are in life and the wardrobe helps so much to get into the role. What upcoming projects should our readers look for you in?
I shot a short film, Prodigal, about a year and a half ago that came out as a compilation with six other short films. It’s no longer in theaters but it is now available on OnDemand and on iTunes. My short, Prodigal, also starred Kenneth Branagh and Jennifer Morrison. I played a mother to a little girl who was a gifted prodigy. What kind of characters would you like to portray in the future?
I would love to do a period piece. I did one a while ago but I would like to do something in the 1920s or 1930s. The wardrobe on that would be really fun. How did you get into acting?

After landing the March 2011 cover of Playboy Magazine, Zoli is ready to take on a new role as a fashion icon. After changing out of one of her many glamorous outfits, Zoli filled us in on her Sons of Anarchy alter ego, Lyla, and her views on fashion. Equipped with a worldly background and piercing blue eyes, this star is definitely one to watch out for. INTERVIEW BY KARISSA BOWERS
You’re best known for your role on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. What is your character, Lyla, like?
Well, she’s a porn star! But she has a shift in work this season. She’s a girl who’s had it a bit rough in life but she has a sweet, soft core which I always try to make sure that shows. She’s not just a hardened industry girl. What’s Lyla’s storyline in season five?
Lyla deals with the aftermath of her husband’s death. Lyla is on her own again with not only her son but also his [her husband’s] two kids. She has to step it up and take charge so she can take care of her family.
I started off a dancer and when I moved to Europe, I stopped dancing because I was going through culture shock and readjusting to a new place. I got into theater at school and that was where it started. I had done something before moving to Europe but being in Prague was what had jump-started it. What was it like transitioning to an L.A. lifestyle after living in Prague?
I was born in the US so I had a taste of living in the states and then we moved to Prague. But it’s a completely different world in LA. I fell in love with LA pretty quickly though. It wasn’t a hard transition but it was completely different. What fashion trends have you been seeing lately?
I don’t really follow trends. There’s definitely a direction fashion goes in and I love that. I’ve tried to avoid “trendy” though. We love that you don’t play by any fashion rules. How would you describe your sense of style?
Bohemian casual with an edge. Who are your favorite designers?
My go-to brands are Helmut Lang and Alexander Wang. For tees, I like Enza Costa. On the shoot today, what was your favorite thing you wore?
Definitely the Rachel Zoe jumpsuit. I love that it was something I wouldn’t normally wear but it was very womanly and glamorous.

Fashion 5.0 got an up close look at Ella Moss’s latest collection and got the scoop on its inspiration from Creative Director Pamella Protzel-Scott. What’s the story behind the name Ella Moss? Ella Moss is a combination of my name and the name of my partner at the time when we started it. My name is Pamella so that’s where the Ella part comes from and Moss was a nickname for my partner whose name is Moise. What was your inspiration behind the latest collection? I was inspired by The Great Gatsby and the roaring twenties. What are your favorite pieces out of the collection? One of my favorites is called the “Cleo” jacket, it’s a gold sequined jacket that you can wear with a basic tee underneath it or you can dress it up. The other piece I love is our “Cleo” shift dress which is a burnout velvet dress that has a flapper feel to it. What’s your favorite piece for fall? Our “Roslyn” leggings. They’re French terry leggings that are coated so they appear to be leather. They are super comfortable but you still get a chic look. How would you describe your personal sense of style? My personal sense of style is how I would describe the brand. It’s a California eclectic style. It’s a little bit boho, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. What can we expect from the next Ella Moss collection? Our spring collection is called “Western Wild in the Sunshine State.” It’s got a lot of western influences like fringe details, some citrus floral prints and bandana prints. 26

What did you have in mind when redesigning the brand? My goal was to better understand who the customer was. Our customer is a young woman who has a career and needs great go-to pieces in her wardrobe that aren’t going to break the bank. WESTFIELD UTC The Westfield UTC shopping center is now the home of San Diego’s second Tiffany & Co. store. The recent opening featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the new 3,250-squarefoot store and their 175-anniversary year. The store was designed with elements inspired by the grandeur of the Fifth Avenue flagship store.
What is a piece you think every customer should own from The Limited? A faux leather bomber jacket, skinny jeans and a Merino sweater. I also recommend a good black suit. The Limited launched its collection by Sophie Theallet on November 15. What can you tell us about that? I wanted a designer who loves women and who is very feminine. The collection features one dress silhouette in four colors, one cardigan in three colors and a few accessories. The Limited is donating a portion of proceeds from the opening weekend to the charity Dress for Success. What can you tell us about the charity? What we admire about Dress for Success is they support women in all transitions of their lives and they help them get back on their feet in tough times. We feel it’s really important to give back to the community. We are letting women shop and enjoy themselves while also giving back to those in need.

DIAGNOSES BREAST CANCER First Warning System’s Breast Tissue Screening Bra has the ability to detect breast cancer cells up to six years earlier than conventional diagnostics. The bra can distinguish heat changes in the breast tissue, a budding sign that there is tumor activity. The device is in the means of being tested for sensitivity and accuracy in three clinical trials involving 650 subjects. It will be available with a prescription first in Europe in 2013, and in the US in 2014 after it is FDA approved.
